Huge thanks to Bookouture and Sue Watson for the opportunity to read and review this book. Our little Lies just blew me away. It was lucky I was on leave from work as I literally could not put this book down. Married to a successful cardiac surgeon, Marianne seems to have it all. But what goes on behind her hall door is a web of deceit and manipulation. Lies, death, control and murder all play a part in this novel. Do not miss out.
This is the first book Sue Watson has written in this genre and i have to say i was impressed ! Marianne is married to Simon the charismatic heart surgeon and on the outside has the perfect marriage to the perfect man and the perfect life and home, but all is not what it seems to the outside world and Marianne is married to a control freak who undermines her at every chance he gets,as a result of this Marianne is convinced Simon is having an affair with Caroline who is a work colleague but is it real or a figment of her imagination ? and is Simon trying to prove she is an unfit mother just so he get rid of her for good ? The book is a dark, gripping psychological thriller that had me gripped from page one and the ending is just a WOW moment ! An excellent 5 star read and i for one hope Sue Watson carries on writing this genre of book.
As a reader of Sue Watsons other books, I was interested to read this as I love physiological thrillers. Could she pull off a change of genre? Oh yes she can. I loved the book. It was really good and kept me hooked all the way through.
A competent thriller, however, I didn't gel with any of the characters and completely loathed the main character, Marianne. For me, I thought the book could have been quite heavily edited which would have helped it to maintain its momentum. Having said that, the ending was quite good and completely unforeseen. On the whole, I'd recommend it.
Thank you to Bookouture and Netgalley for this ARC! Wow, initially I could not stand Marianne. She was the epitome of unreliable, delusional and broken. I know that it is a stigma that society sees battered women as weak; I know that they aren't. They think a multitude of things that keep them in their situation. They experience fear, doubt, anguish, self-loathing, everything under the sun, but the one thing I cannot stand is the disillusioned attitude and worshiping their abuser. From the get go, Marianne paints her POS husband Simon as a hard working heart surgeon who needs to let off a little steam by berating and beating on her and gives him every excuse in the book to validate him doing so. I truly hate him, hated him so deeply my teeth ached. I will tell you for sure that Sue Watson creates a great villain, because boy I wanted to punch Simon in his disgusting grin repeatedly. But somewhere in the middle, Marianne gathers steam, stands up a little taller, acknowledges that her bright light has dimmed significantly, and takes ownership of it once again. She comes up with this badass plan to get out from under Simon's thumb and wowed me. I really enjoyed the turnaround from her, she owned her weakness and it brought her strength and it was admirable and realistic. I enjoyed this heart palpating, quick thriller.
I love the suspense genre and am thrilled there are so many incredible, page-turning books out now, and also coming out soon.
I devoured Our Little Lies by Sue Watson. The main character is an unreliable narrator- or is she? She’s popping anxiety pills and forgetting things, or is her husband telling her what he wants her to believe? When she finds steamy emails between him and a beautiful colleague, is that her imagination playing tricks on her? She cares deeply about her children and will do anything to keep them safe and happy. But is she accidentally sabotaging everything she holds dear?
Here’s what you need to know:
Marianne has a life others dream of. A beautiful townhouse on the best street in the neighbourhood. Three bright children who are her pride and joy.
Sometimes her past still hurts: losing her mother early, growing up in foster care. But her husband, Simon, is always there. A successful surgeon, he’s the envy of every woman they’ve ever met. Flowers, gifts, trips to France: nothing is too good for his family.
Then Simon says another woman’s name. The way he lingers on it, Caroline, gives Marianne a shudder of suspicion, but she knows it’s nothing – she can’t entertain this flash of paranoia.
In the old days, she’d have distracted herself by excelling at work, but Marianne left her glamorous career when she married. She’d speak to a friend, but she’s too busy with her children and besides, Simon doesn’t approve of the few she has left.
It’s almost by accident that Marianne starts to learn more about Caroline. But once started, she can’t stop, because what she finds makes her wonder: is the question she should be asking not ‘should she be jealous’, but… ‘should she be scared?’
The author did a fantastic job of keeping the tension and planting seeds of doubt in the reader’s mind as the book progresses. I usually have things figured out but I loved the twists and turns this book took right up until the end!
Highly recommended! Get this one right now!
I was torn between wanting to shake Marianne for letting Simon treat her the way he did and wanting to her to stand up and walk away. I loved how the author was able to deleve into the different personalities of the main characters and while at the start I hated Simon but as the story developed, I got a new understanding of him and in his own twisted logic that he believed he was justified in his actions. He genuinely was convinced that both his wives were at fault and drove him to his actions. I would definitely recommend reading this book and at the end, I saw that the author previously wrote romantic novels and while they're not my usual type of book, if the writing is anything like this one, then I would have no problem in checking them out but I do hope that she writes more like this one.
This book explores the myth of "perfect families" and delves deep into concepts such as love, motherhood and marriage. What is a normal marriage? What does a normal mother look like? How normal is "normal"?
Part romance, part suburban thriller, the topic will appeal to the readers of Liane Moriarty and Harlan Coben. Although the crime fiction part of the book comes right at the end, this read is a page-turner from the beginning.
A thriller with Aa surprise ending. Is Marianne crazy or is her husband making her think she is? A turbulent marriage affects the children with a tragic outcome.
Very few authors have the ability to skip genres! I steer clear of these books but I had not known that Sue Watson is a rom-com author until I read Our Little Lies and googled her.
The story is a real psychological thriller. It leaves you guessing who is sane and who isn’t. It dives deep into obsession and control. A woman with a seemingly perfect life until her husband whispers a colleagues name in bed. This is the start of the madness. It will leave you guessing and the end will shock you!
At last Marianne has the perfect life with her 3 children and her talented surgeon husband Simon, living in her stunning home. Things haven’t always been so perfect for Marianne, suffering from a bit of paranoia and over the top reactions to certain situations, but she will be absolutely fine if she keeps taking her calming meds, right ? Because it’s all in her imagination, things have got to be fine now she has started afresh with her family. Then one day her husband mentions his new brilliant colleague Caroline.
I enjoyed this book but just think it was a bit repetitive and draggy in parts also the chapters are very long so I often had to leave it mid chapter which I really don’t like doing but that’s maybe a personal thing.
Thank You Net Galley and Bookouture for an early copy of Sue Watson’s Our Little Lies. OMGOSH! Riveting, Compelling, Addicting! That surprise party scene WHOA. Great writing, awesome characters, did not want to put it down or have it end. Fantastic book from beginning to end.
A leopard certainly never changes his spots and Simon is definitely one of those leopards. A trail of women, made to feel special and loved, then manipulated, isolated and broken. Is he capable of any selfless act of love? Any act of sacrifice? Is he capable of murder?
And what lengths will these women go to to protect themselves?
I absolutely loved this book. Started a bit slow but couldn’t put it down once it got started. A true psychological thriller. Thanks for the preview.
Marianne and Simon at first glance, seem to be the perfect couple. Simon is a heart surgeon and Marianne is a stay at home mum to their three children. They live in a picture perfect home in a great neighborhood and sound like the kind of family you would be lucky to know, except when the front door closes and they are all alone, something is very, very wrong.
You see, Marianne knows that Simon is unfaithful. Even though he convinces her time and time again that he only loves her, she cannot stop obsessing over who he is with. Even though her rational brain tells her that he wouldn't stay with her after all her accusations if he was cheating, she still can't let go of her concerns. Even when he is cruel to her, Marianne knows it is only because of her jealousy and rage. Even when she finds proof, she can't be sure her own eyes haven't deceived her, because after all, Simon says Marianne is the one with the problem.
This was a very dark and twisted tale that had me doubting both Marianne and Simon. I veered back and forth, first certain that Marianne was unstable, then certain that Simon was a serial cheater and abuser. Things didn't become clear to me until I was close to the stunning conclusion with the author throwing in one more 'I didn't see it coming' twist.
This was a beach read for me and I may have forgotten to reapply sunblock and stay hydrated as I couldn't stop flipping pages. My first book by Sue Watson and I look forward to what she writes next.
I received an e-ARC from Bookouture through NetGalley.
Another amazing thriller! A must read, I was surprised at every page! I love the characters, I was able to really understand them and loved how the writing. Highly recommend.
This was a really good read for me and I raced through . I found myself mentally shouting at Marianne right from the beginning . She has a lovely home , 3 children and a handsome surgeon husband who we find out early on controls her every move . he doesn't approve of her friends , likes to keep her isolated and basically treats her with cruelness and contempt and she laps it all up under the fog of the antidepressants he encourages her to take .. Marianne starts to be suspicious about Caroline one of her husbands colleagues and once she starts thinking about it she cannot stop . I loved how Marianne started to get stronger ( it took long enough ) until she's finally strong enough to confront her husband . No spoilers here but a great twist I got totally wrong . The only thing that did get on my nerves was the over use of the hash key . Still a really good read , I would give 4.5 if I could as it was only a tiny irritation .
This is an extremely well-deserved 5 star book! No exaggeration, no I am just giving you 5 stars because I got a free book review. This book is a true psychological thriller because one of the characters really is psychotic but who is it?
I am only halfway through Our Little Lies by Sue Watson, and it is like the story gets more and more twisted and you just keep holding your breath and keep hoping that everything will turn out alright for our poor beleaguered wife with a bastard for a husband.
The internal dialogue is amazing but if you can’t tolerate some cuss words you should probably stay away from the book. This is the first time though that a few cuss words actually are extremely important in fixing a picture in your mind of the deep down feelings of Marianne.
I finished the book and it stayed its course until the very end. I want to say I was blown away by the ending and I was but unfortunately not in a good way. It was totally disappointing and I think it will be a letdown for most readers. There was so many more ways this could have ended and the chosen wasn’t it.
I am still rating the book 5 stars because no other book has kept me so on the seat and I just kept reading forever. I will definitely recommend it to others and would like to take this opportunity to thank the author, Bookouture, and NetGalley for letting me read an advance copy in exchange for my unbiased review.
I am going to be standing alone when I post this review. But since this is my journey into the book, I have to write my honest views.
I didn't like the book for the reasons below, and I am going to try to attach proof to my statements.
As repeatedly done in psychological thrillers of late, the male main character Simon, the husband thinks nothing while undermining his wife, Marianne, calling her unstable, and blaming her for every infraction and every imperfection around the house. In the first half of the book, perfect was a frequently used word.
Dialogue from the book
1) I know a recipe isn't a worry but it's a torture as Simon's a bit of a perfectionist.
2) I think back at the early days. I vowed I'd be the perfect wife and mother
3) I totally gave myself to this perfect family who needed me
In fact I counted, perfect word was used 78 times in the book!!
And you wonder what happened when she was not perfect? He insulted her, made her have anti-psychiatric medications, got angry with her when she doubted his fidelity and hit her in bed during sex.
After all this, the wife thinks
Dialogue from the book
1) I'm so lucky. I still love my husband after all these years. I love him with a blind passion that has no reason, no sense, and I'm aware that there are times when I should be stronger, but I'm irrational where Simon is concerned.
2) As a child I'd never dreamt a life like this could be mine and it's all thanks to him - without Simon I have nothing. I am nothing.
3) We haven't had sex for a while, but tonight he wants me... He doesn't want me in a loving, gentle way, but he still wants me.
I do get it that Simon has chosen his prey well, and he takes undue advantage of her neediness, her lack of confidence, and her dependence on him.
As the wife justifies... Dialogue from the book
1) I sometimes wonder if it was my fear that Simon was drawn to. A flawed vulnerable woman who wouldn't control him, as his mother always had.
The book continues on with Simon having his indiscretions and then she coming to know of it. Throw in a murder and a police investigation, a false charge, a suspicious cop and red herrings, it becomes a potboiler of a thriller.
I like Sue Watson books, they are fun and sweet, this is her first psychological thriller. And it follows the same formula as seen in most books of this genre. Insult and beat the wife + wife pushing back mid book + a murder = psychological thriller. Sighhhh... It's so done. I am so done.
I really want to like the book, but it is too delusional for the main character and too illusional for me. I am sad and angry!! I hate when a book makes me feel so down...
On the face of it, Marianne appears to lead a charmed life. She’s married to renowned heart surgeon Simon, who also happens to be extremely handsome - they have three wonderful children, a stunning new home in the best part of town filled with the most expensive and tasteful furnishings. Wonderful isn’t it? Well actually no it isn’t, because under that very shiny and perfect veneer, lies something very dark indeed!
Marianne didn’t have the best start in life, she lost her mother at a very early age and spent her formative years in foster care. However, she eventually discovered that her gift for art brought her a successful career, one that she not only excelled in, but one that she absolutely loved too. Enter Simon - handsome, charming, and a career that’s really going places. Marianne is besotted and it looks as if the future is decidedly rosy. Well, of course this being a psychological thriller we know that won’t be the case, and suffice to say ‘Our Little Lies’ is very aptly named!
I didn’t immediately take to Marianne, I found her somewhat irritating, however, as the story progressed I discovered that there was more substance to her, I liked the fact that she’d led a completely different life before her new husband Simon persuaded her to give up her career, a career that made her whole, a career that defined her as a person, and if he was able to do that so easily, what else was he capable of? Well, read it for yourself and you’ll find out just how controlling and cruel our handsome charming Simon is!
With a well constructed narrative, some great (if not always likeable) characters, and a twist at the end that smacked me right between the eyes, this was a really dark but enjoyable read.
*My thanks to Bookouture for my ARC. I have given an honest unbiased review in exchange*
