Angela Marsons has done it again! Yet another gripping Kim Stone book.
Loved every second, and gutted I’ve finished the story. Did guess one little twist but that just kept me wanting to read more to see what would happen next. Short, sharp chapters that make the book fast paced and you think ‘I’ll just read one more chapter’....
Great characters that I’ve got to know really well as ive read each book I now feel like they’re my best friends. Cannot recommend this book enough.
I am in awe of author Angela Marsons as I finish her latest offering. I ended her last book, Dying Truth with tears in my eyes because of a shock ending that I didn't detail in my last review for fear of spoiling the book. If this is your first venture into an Angela Marsons book, then lock the doors, make yourself a cuppa and put your phone on do not disturb. My advice: buy Silent Scream and work your way forward from there. You can thank me later.
Readers who are up to speed with this series already know what a masterful storyteller this author is. They will not be disappointed by Fatal Promise. She has such a remarkable insight into grief, which is truly laid bare as the team grapple with the loss of someone dear. But they still have a job to do and must pull themselves together if they are to solve the latest murder case. There is so much depth to this book, a short review could never cover it all. It has everything you would expect from such a talented author: a fast-paced crime with twists and turns, an insight into each of the characters involved, a helping of banter to lighten the mood and a new character, Penn, which changes the dynamic of the team. You cannot help but be entertained by this latest offering, although a little sleep deprived! Be prepared for a CRACKER of an ending too. All in all, a real treat for crime readers. You won't want to miss this one.
Yet another great addition to the DI Kim Stone series.
Kim and her team are once again back at work, still grieving for the loss of Kevin Dawson but once again stepping up to the challenge of investigating a murder.
The body of Dr Gordon Cordell is discovered in a park, then his son Saul involved in what appears to be a horrific road accident dies. The coincidence is just too much for Kim.
They set about investigating the deaths helped along by a new member of the team that Kim has had forced upon her.
When the suspicious death of a woman follows it becomes clear they have a serial killer to catch when links for all three to Russell Hall hospital ar uncovered.
Penn will never be Dawson, will he ever be accepted ?
A cleverly plotted crime thriller that I didnt want to put down.
A team of characters that work so well together and although Dawsons loss has left a hole it looks certain Penn is going to be able to help fill it.
I can`t wait for the next instalment!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the chance to read this as an ARC.
Another book in the series of Det. Kim Stone and her team. After the death of her partner Dawson and her accident Kim is anxious to get back to work with her team of Stephanie, and Bryant. When a new team member Penn is forced upon her she finds it hard to work with him as he isn't "Dawson". Also still trying to heal emotionally and physically she is forced in a rapid race to solve the murder of a well known Doctor, his son, the nurse he was having an affair with, and the nurse's mother. What is causing the murderer to kill all these related family members? This is a fast paced book, easy to read, with likeable characters that leaves you wanting to read more about Kim Stone.
FATAL PROMISE is another amazing novel from Angela Marsons. Marsons is one of my favorite authors. I discovered her books on Netgalley and am always excited when another one comes out. Her character development is the best, and I feel like I get to know them better in each novel in the series. Her plot twists are always a surprise, and keep you guessing until the last page..
Love, love, loved it!! Angela Marsons doesn’t disappoint with her latest book. Full of twists and turns, just when you feel you know whodunnit, the story does a one hundred and eighty degree turn. I enjoyed the fact two cases were running parallel and I wondered how Marsons would introduce and integrate a new character with the team dynamics. There’s so much depth, not just the story lines but character development. Again, this is a story I’ll think about for a long time and I cannot wait for the next instalment. A whopping 5 stars!
It's official, i am addicted to this series of amazing books. The characters are wonderfully written and the stories always keep me on edge. I read them in a day because trying to get anything else done is just impossible when i know this is waiting for me. It's so good and i am never let down. 100 stars!!!
Was feeling a bit disillusioned with books I’ve been reading in this genre then wow! Couldn’t put it down!! It follows on from book 8 in the series and I can’t wait for book 10. Angela Marsons is one my favourite writers in this genre 5*
I always enjoy this series and can't wait till the next one comes out. As with the previous books you will be hooked in the first chapter wondering what road you will be going down for the adventure of a lifetime.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 stars....just
I love the Kim Stone books but it has to be said that some of better than others and this is one of the weaker ones.
The previous book was so brilliant, that this one, which follows on quite soon after the tragic events of the last book, seems slower and sadder in a way.
All the characters are grieving and battling their own demons, the team aren’t getting on, and the two crimes being investigated lacked spark for me; I was barely interested in the missing girl and Kim’s approach to the Mancini’s was a bit off.
Overall disappointing book however I look forward to a return to form with the next book and am looking forward to learning more about Penn.
After finishing the last book in the Kim Stone series, Dying Truth, many readers, myself included, were really concerned for Kim and the rest of her team, after the devastating events in the finale of the last book. If you are new to the Kim Stone series, I think it will really help to read the previous book before you pick up Fatal Promises. Please be aware that this review may contain spoilers if you haven’t read the last book. Although the mystery at the core of the latest book is separate to events that have proceeded, I think you will get a better understanding of the characters and the predicament that they are now in if you read Dying Truth first.
This is a novel with a strong emotional core. Angela Marsons really delves into the psychology of her characters in her books. Kim is a character we have grown to understand across the series, but Angela is now starting to explore other characters she is now bringing to the front. Stacey is one character in particular who we have seen develop more recently. But also we are still finding out more about Kim which is what makes her a fascinating character. Understanding the minds of her characters is something that Angela really succeeds at. Every time I finish her latest book, even months later, I am always wondering what they are doing now and how they are getting on in their lives. I think this is what has made this series really successful.
In Fatal Promises, Kim and her team are investigating the horrendous death of Dr Cordell, a slippery character from the last book who really got under Kim’s skin. It appears to Kim that events that took place previously might be about to escalate again and this puts the team on edge. The opening chapter of this book really sparks the intrigue, and it got me thinking. With each twist and turn that this book delivered I kept thinking back to that opening and wondering what it meant. Angela always does a great job at keeping up the suspense. And those final chapters had my heart racing.
I think what came as most surprising in this book was the slight change in Kim’s personality. She is showing a different side to the person who we have got to know over the series, and for me, it did give this book a darker tone. She has become a lot spikier. Usually, I can rely on Kim and her colleague Bryant to add some light hearted moments, but this wasn’t there very often this time. But I can see why perhaps this is the case in this book, and I am hoping that the team will soon reach a new element of normality.
I always say that this is a series that keeps going from strength to strength and for me it is still going strong. I think we still have a lot to learn about Kim and the rest of the team and I can’t wait to see where Angela will take them from here. Fatal Promises like the rest of the books in the series is a stonking good read. Five stars from me.
Wow! Ms. Marsons produced another stellar novel! What I like about this author’s writing is that after reading 9 books on Kim Stone and Company …her stories are still a joy to read. I have huge respect for an author who is able to entertain us with her imagination …to put her creativity into such story telling …I am quite envious! I was beginning to think her story plots were becoming a bit predictable, but she blew that whole theory out of the water in her last book! In this book, the team is dealing with the loss of one of their members and how the grieving process differed from one person to the next…yet, life still goes on and the team must put their personal feelings aside and rush to solve 2 mysteries! I could not put this book down....I had to read it all in 2 sittings! I mean, who needs to eat when you have a story that you are totally immersed in! A bag of chips would suffice!!
I would like to thank Ms. Marsons, the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in return for a fair and honest review
Brilliant! As always, Angela Marsons delivers a fast paced storyline that’s full of twists and turns! I loved the part near the end, where we got to understand Stone’s character a little more deeply. Can’t wait for the next installment, hope Angela is writing quickly!
Angela Marsons paints detailed psychological portraits of the heartbreaking effects of grief and how each person experiences it after the harrowing events from the last novel with the death of Kevin Dawson whilst saving the life of a young boy. This is the 9th in the brilliant DI Kim Stone series, and it is the grief writ large on the close knit police team that takes centre stage. They are practically family after all, the loss of the irreplaceable Kevin blows them off their feet as if a bomb has gone off, leaving in its wake the bewildering and painful emotional wreckage. The silence that pervades and hangs over the shell shocked team is palpable in its intensity and ferocity. Any new member of the team is going to be hit by the strong off kilter emotions that arise, and so it barely surprising that the incoming Penn is met with resentment and hostility.
However, life insists on continuing and they have the brutal murder of a familiar man in local woodland, Dr Gordon Cordell, to respond to and they have to find the inner strength to work as a team if they are going to get anywhere near to solving the murder. The son of Dr Cordell, Saul, is involved in a horrific car crash, but is it just an accident? Kim refuses to believe that this is coincidental. The suspicious death of a woman follows, and it is transparently clear that a dangerous serial killer roams large and planning to continue killing. Stacey finds herself looking at the disappearance of a fifteen year old girl. Kim is hurting as never before, barely resembling her old self, and this shows in her behaviour and her decisionmaking. Can the evidence unearthed in the investigation be trusted? In a story of twists and the unexpected, Kim and her vulnerable team are to be tested to their limits as they uncover connections to Russells Hall Hospital where Dr Cordell used to work.
Marsons does a superb job in showing the effects of grief on a group of people that I have invested in and come to know so well. So far, Kim's determined and focused team has worked so incredibly well, here it fraying at the edges as conflict rears its head, and each of them must find their own path in coming to terms with the loss of Kevin. In the meantime, Kim struggles, robbed of her penetrating and insightful abilities, but this just adds to the humanity of her complicated persona, overburdened with the traumas she forced to bear. The team could not lose an integral member of their team without the fall out that is inevitably going to follow. This is a wonderful, if emotionally draining, addition to a great series and has me desperate to read the next. Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.
Woohoo another belting read in the Kim Stone series. When all the evidence stakes up and the forensics are on point you’ve cracked the case - haven’t you? Because the forensics don’t lie, and nice helpful people aren’t murderers, are they? Cracking twist to the end of the main plot. The subplot continues to delight too.
A prominent surgeon is found murdered with his throat slit. He was given a choice, by the killer, but that did not save him. The doctor was performing illegal abortions…was this why he was killed? Later, his son is found in his wrecked car, barely alive. This opens an entire new line of questioning for Det. Kim Stone and her team. Det. Stone is a kickass detective who will go after the killer until she puts them away. To complicate things, Kim is still recovering from her injury as well as the tragic death of one of her team members. The whole team is suffering as hard feelings surface when the powers that be bring in a replacement detective to help with the investigation. Another case has fallen into the hands of one of the team members who is investigating the disappearance of a fifteen-year old girl, Jessie. Jessie may be in need of urgent medical assistance so the hunt is on to find her before it is too late. The suspense ratchets up as there is another murder, one that suggests a connection with the hospital where the doctor worked, as the young girl seems to have disappeared. This is book nine in the Det. Kim Stone mysteries and each book gets more intense as we become involved in the team, their lives and the murders they solve. Another well rounded and creative mystery by the master…Angela Marsons. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Book 9’in the DI Kim stone series and yet again an absolute cracker of a read. This book closely follows on from book 8 (Dying Truth). I do recommend reading these books in order to understand the characters and what is happening.
Anyway back to this book. I absolutely love DI Kim Stone and the banter she has with her team . How she puts up with no crap from anyone. In this book Stone and her team are dealing with a new team member and with two criminal cases. The first and main case is a spate of murders being carried out . The second case is one of a missing teenage girl. The second case is being led by Stacey and I was delighted to see her getting more recognition in this book . Yet again Angela Marsons has nailed it with this excellent book . A massive 5 stars from me .
DI Kim Stone is back at work after the last case left her injured and the death of one of her team made her doubt herself, but not for long. She has her old team back minus one and that spare place causes lots of sadness amongst the rest of the team but they are only just settling in when they are sent to a death where a doctor is found in suspicious circumstances.
The empty seat in the office is filled by DC Penn who they have all worked with before but it seems strange to see him in Dawson's chair, it is something they are having to get used to even though Kim is adamant that it's only temporary. There is another killing and as the bodies pile up they seem to have enough forensic proof to arrest someone but Kim is not sure about this and as she has always said the forensics are cast iron proof she is not so sure in this case. Does she go against her usual tactics ? and if so is she missing the clues?. This was a great read and DI Stone is back to her brilliant although sometimes surly self. She also gives Stacey more lee way to follow up on the missing girl case that she just couldn't leave behind when she was called back to Stone's squad. This all comes together to form a fantastic book and if you haven't read any of the previous books you can still read this without confusion but I for one am going to go back and read the ones I have missed previously because this reminded me why I love the series. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookoutre for the copy of the book.
Brilliantly gripping police procedural. I loved Kim Stone and her team as well as the twisty plot. I literally couldn't put it down. Definitely a detective series to look out for.
A disgraced doctor is murdered and shortly afterwards his son is in a traumatic car accident.......or was it an accident ? Kim Stone and her team, still recovering both physically and emotionally from the devastating ending to their last case, try to make the link when other dead bodies soon join the picture. Toss in the additional case of a missing 15 year old girl with extensive medical needs and the team has a very full plate. #9 in Marsons excellent Kim Stone series was very good again. Thanks to Angela Marsons, Bookouture and Net Galley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
