This is another great read in the Kim Stone series. The book shows the team (Kim. Bryant and Stacey) grieving over the loss of a collegue and member of the team (Kevin Dawson) .This theme runs through the book and causes some problems when a new team arrives. Then a surgeon who is known to them ends up being the first victim and they have to follow the trail.
This book is excellent I kept reading but didn't want to get to the end but of course you do. I totally enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.
I am a huge fan of this series and just love the character of Kim Stone. I had reservations of how the dynamics would be and how the team would cope after losing Dawson but Marsons dealt with this fabulously.
This book let us understand a lot more how Kim Stone deals with loss and grief and it was good to see Stacey developing as a detective. I devoured the book in one sitting – it was another fabulous read.
Having read and loved the previous eight DI Kim Stone novels, I knew I was in for a treat when I started Fatal Promise. I managed to read the prologue and a couple of chapters before I had to leave the house and I was hooked straightaway. I couldn’t wait to get home to carry on reading.
Book nine starts when the body of a doctor is discovered brutally murdered in local woodland. He’s linked to a previous case, the death of a schoolgirl, that Kim and her team worked on so they’re eager to solve the case. As more deaths happen the team wonder if there are more links.
This book is thrilling from the first page. You’re drawn in and can’t stop turning the pages. It’s fast, pacy and just an all round fantastic read. If I could give it more than five stars I would.
Angela is probably one of my favourite crime authors and I’ll happily recommend her books to everyone. I can’t wait for book ten!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Angela Marsons for the chance to review.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this advanced copy of this latest book in the Kim Stone series. Yet again Angela Marsons delivers a winner. I have loved this series right from book 1 and once again this story does not disappoint. You are taken on a roller coaster of emotions with Kim, Bryant, Stace and new team member Penn. At one point I couldn't see the page for tears of sadness and on another occasion absolutely creased with laughter at the banter between Kim and Bryant. Angela Marsons deserves all the success she has achieved because this is an amazing series and the standard has never dropped from book 1 through to this latest offering. It is full of drama, laughter and tears. I have no hesitation in recommending this book and the series.
Kim Stone is one of my favourite detectives. Her team are one of my favourite teams.
I started reading this one with trepidation after the shock ending of the previous book. It took me a while to get over that ending and the loss of one of of the team or maybe it might be more appropriate to say the loss of one of the family.
This book is very much about the fallout from the previous book - over the last eight novels, we, the readers, have grown with the team and become very involved with them, and I certainly felt the grief of Kim, Bryant and Stacey. Nothing was ever going to be the same again and we really feel for new boy, Penn, as he seeks to fill what seems to be an increasingly unfillable gap.
Grief shows itself in different ways and as they begin to investigate a series of murders which are linked to a character in the previous book, we see how each of the team reacts to that grief, especially Kim, and how she shuts down and becomes almost un-Kim like. Her judgement seems to be clouded and her reactions not as sharp - much to the consternation of Bryant, her Sergeant, and Woody, her boss. She starts seeing the obvious and not questioning things. She does, however, have to follow Woody's instructions to take care, especially after her own serious injury, and we learn so much more about Kim and why she is like she is from her old adversary, Ted, the one person who knows her better than she knows herself.
Stacey also has her own demons to fight. She is also looking after a second case of a missing girl which she picked up working elsewhere and she handles this with the help of Penn, who sits quiet and efficient, hiding secrets of his own and hoping to fit in.
The solving of the clues and the murders are vintage Angela Marsons and they re also linked to the themes of guilt, grief and responsibility, adding to the depth of this book.
Despite the dark themes, there are some lovely light moments in the book, like Kim getting her leg x-rayed in the morgue rather than miss Woody's deadline, Mitch's delight in his work and Stacey's visit to Penn's home where she meets his brother and learns why he needs the transfer.
The last book left me totally shocked. This one had me worried towards the end but eventually left me feeling a bit happier - the team were working through the grief and the future looked better. Roll on book 10 so we can catch up with them all again...... please, Angie!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this review copy.
Amazing book and fantastic addition to the series. Once again Kim Stone is in the middle of a case that takes twists and turns . You are pulled in and never let go right until the end
What another Cracking good read this book Fatal Promise by Angela Marsons was. I've been a big fan of Kim Stone series of books, ever since I first read Silent Scream many Moons ago. Everytime I open her books and start to read them I am hooked. It like seeing a old friend again going for coffee.
Fatal Promise is the 9th book in Kim Stones series and is linked to the previous book called Dying Truth.
Kim Stone and her team are struggling to come to terms with the death of a very close colleague Detective Kevin Dawson. They are all finding it hard to work without him and relate to his replacement to the team Detective Penn.
This book will keep you hooked especially as the team are working on two different cases.
In the first case a body of a Doctor is discovered brutally murdered and found in local woodland.
Detective Kim Stone and her team, discover that the victim is Gordon Cordell who is linked to a previous case which involved the death of a young girl.
Stacey is working on the second case of a missing school girl and is working closely with the new colleague Detective Penn who she resents.
You will learn more about Detective Penn and his tupperware tub throughout the book and you will warm to him like I did.
All I can say if you've never read any of Angela Marsons books - Detective Kim Stone series where have you been?
I highly recommend this series of book. They will have you gripped from the very first few pages and you may need a tissue or two in book 8.............
I've enjoyed these books so much and can't wait for Book ten
If I could give this brilliant book 10 stars I would. So Big Fat 5 stars
Many thanks to Bookouture, Angela Marsons and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
There are some books that you know will have you hooked even before you've started them. This book was one of those. Angela Marsons is just an extraordinarily amazing writer and she always draws the reader in from the very first page.
I have read all the books in this series and I was very eager to read this one to see how the characters are dealing with what happened in the previous book. Angela Marsons writes with such sensitivity that some parts of the book were just hauntingly beautiful. One would never think to describe a procedural crime book as such, but her books are so much more than that. They make you laugh, cry and get all the feels. The crime aspect of the book was flawless as usual and kept one guessing. I really enjoyed this book and eagerly await the next one.
I highly recommend this book but I would definitely advise that you read the other books in the series before coming to this one as it will give you a greater understanding of the characters and you will appreciate it more with all the background knowledge.
1 star
Kim Stone’s attitude really irritated me in this book. I put up with her before because they were good novels, but this takes the case. I couldn’t get past it this time. So, I didn’t make it past the first few pages.
I’m sure this is really a good book. As are all of Angela Marson’s novels. I am sorry; I’m just not in the mood for such irritations when there are so many more books waiting on my DBR pile.
I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding this title to me so that I may judge and review the book.
Once again Angela Marsons delivers an entertainingly tense and tightly written story which begins at a fast pace and doesn't let up. Although I didn't find this story as frightening as some of the others it is a worthwhile addition to this series and well worth reading.
After the devastating end to the last story there are some loose ends to be dealt with and these are done so well. The loss of a team member is sympathetically covered and each main character deals with it in their own way with all of them having special memories to help them through.
I wouldn't recommend reading this as a stand alone story but it could be read this way. As the next instalment it doesn't disappoint and moves everyone's arc on in positive way. I was delighted to be able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to Netgalley and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone who has read the previous novels should be delighted with this.
I love the character of Detective Kim Stone and instalment number is just as fantastic as the first eight. The book takes up a few weeks after book eight and the team are trying to come to terms with a new member. I love the damaged woman that Kim Stone is and the decision by the author not to fix her. She doesn’t have to be perfect to be successful at the challenges set.
The main premise of the story is the death of a doctor and then a nurse. Who could want them dead and why?
It was a great read and I read it in one sitting. Can’t wait for book nine as it will be on the top of my to read pile. Thanks Angela Marsons for sharing the creation of Detective Kim Stone.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC.
Absolutely brilliant book. Whilst the crime committed is an interesting read what makes this book is the development of the characters and their relationship with each other. Loved it!
This book carries on from book eight but also works well as a standalone. I was quite harsh about the previous book and I take it all back! This is a truly gripping, truly interesting installment with a very satisfying finale. Read it!
Fatal Promise is the ninth book in this brilliant crime thriller series which just gets better and better, these well crafted stories with great characters hold you in thrall with the high standard of writing and page turning ability this author has.
Kim and her team are back after the tragic events in the previous book Dying Truth. This story begins with a violent murder that has links to their previous case, and with a new member in their team and the possibility they are looking for a serial killer plus individually still dealing with their grief they have their work cut out for them. Added to this Stacey also has a case of a missing schoolgirl she is investigating having to work with the new detective whom she resents.
As this case unfolds we have very emotional insights into how each person is dealing with this tough case and their own grief which adds rather than distracts from the tale.
A cast of characters, a race against time and a culprit I never saw coming! Plus some more heartbreaking insight into what has moulded Kim Stone into the person she has become. I can't praise this book highly enough, and await the next with bated breath.
My thanks to net galley and publisher Bookoutre for opportunity to review this book honestly.
Another smash hit from the author. A book filled with a lot of mystery and suspense. The one problem was that there was a lot in this book that would not be understood if one were to read this as a stand alone book. Better integration of the story from the last book would have been helpful for the reader who was reading the author for the first time.
There is little new that I can say about this wonderful series. Angela Marsons goes from strength to strength and DI Kim Stone becomes ever more interesting. She and her team are struggling to come to terms with the death of their colleague Kev and are finding it hard to accept his replacement. Two fascinating cases confront Stone and the ever more involved Stace and the outcomes are unexpected. Roll on number ten!
What a fantastic book. It grabs you from the first page and keeps hold til the very end!. The 9th book in the series is every bit as enthralling as the 1st one. Kim Stone is a fascinating, complex character and I'm loving getting to know her better. Cannot recommend this series highly enough. Easy 5 stars..
I’m a huge fan of this series and this book didn’t disappoint, fast paced as always, I raced through in 24 hours! Can’t wait for the next one!
I've read every book in this series and at the conclusion of each have believed the next can't possibly be better but every time Marsons has proved me wrong!
While I've still not fully forgiven the loss of Dawson this is another outstanding novel. Fast paced, dark and twisted with the return of a great cast of characters who are all damaged in their own way and peppered with just the right amount of humour. I've no doubt that Fatal Promise is set to become the next bestseller
I’m a huge fan of this author & have been reading this constantly since I got it couldn’t put it down. Absolutely loved it! Well done to the author another amazing book 👌
