As always, Angela Marsons comes up with the goods. I love this author and the DI Kim Stone series. The team are coming to terms with a loss and the dynamics are evolving.
Kim Stone is Back !. I have loved every Kim Stone series till date. This book has been particularly difficult for me to get into because of what Angela Marsons did with the last book. But as usual, it was an amazing read. The change in dynamics of the team was so evident. I felt the same emptiness that Kim and her team felt. Somehow it all felt like healing at the end. 5 stars !!
Fatal Promise by Angela Marsons
Fatal Promise, the ninth in Angela Marsons’ brilliant DI Kim Stone series, follows on directly from its predecessor Dying Truth, and, although much of its story stands alone, I really think you need to read Dying Truth first. For things have happened which mean that nothing will ever be the same for Kim Stone and her team and the impact of this will be all the greater for the reader who was left shocked by the ending of the previous novel. Having said all that, Fatal Promise does make it clear what has happened.
Kim Stone is almost recovered from her injuries and is returning to work. Not that she’s really ready. She has so much pain in her leg. But the pain in her heart is greater. She needs to be back with her team, now so much smaller than it was, and each of them feels as she does. But criminals carry on as normal committing their crimes, and it’s no time at all before Kim must find another killer. Gordon Cordell, a doctor involved in Kim’s last case, is found murdered in a local wood. Shortly afterwards, Cordell’s son is injured in a terrible car crash. Then the body of a woman is found. All of them have links to the local hospital. Stone doesn’t believe in coincidences. She knows that there must be a pattern and, now that the killer is getting a taste for it, there seems to be no end in sight. The pressure builds and it doesn’t make it any easier that a new team member is forced on Stone. There are some shoes that can never be filled.
I love the Kim Stone series so much, Angela Marsons is an extraordinary plotter. Her stories are deliciously complex and entangled and the way in which they come together is always never less than brilliant. The stories are peppered with twists that genuinely surprise and always work. They don’t feel forced and they’re all the more shocking for it. But the books also excel because of their characters. Kim Stone is a marvellous creation. She has a rage in her, she will catch the bad guys at almost any cost, she plays around with the rules, she can be immensely difficult, particularly to those who work with her or who are her superior officers, but she is loved and respected by so many. The loyalties that she has built up over the years continue to thrive and she can always find that useful favour to call in.
But alongside stubborn, determined Kim Stone we have her team – Stacey and Bryant – and they’re every bit as good to know. Bryant’s relationship with Stone is dealt with particularly well here, as is Stacey’s relationship with the new member of the team. Stacey, such a strong element of the series, is given time on her own here as she follows the clues to her own case involving a missing teenager. This is such a good story and complements the rest of the novel perfectly. Kim Stone is the mother hen who realises that she must allow Stacey some time to shine on her own. Everything is driven by very real emotions and motives. It all feels psychologically true.
Although grief is the dominant emotion of Fatal Promise, it is not a particularly gloomy book. There’s the usual wit and repartee. Angela Marsons writes so well. The dialogue feels genuine and believable, and it’s all the funnier for it. It’s also a corking story! There are so many red herrings. It’s such a satisfying puzzle. And I didn’t guess any of it. This isn’t a read to dally over. I read the book so quickly the pages almost turned themselves. Fatal Promise is another thoroughly satisfying novel from Angela Marsons. I don’t know how she does it! Time after time, she excels. We are so lucky to have this series.

Fatal promise is the ninth book in the character driven Kim Stone series by Angela Marsons .
The team is back after losing a member in the last book and the absence is felt by every member of the team who cope with the tragedy in their own way .Along with grieving the loss, Kim and her team are also trying to solve the murder of a doctor and his son who were connected with the case in the previous book. When another dead body is found who is also connected to the doctor Kim knows there is a serial killer at large who will stop at nothing .
This book is an addictive fast paced novel and a great addition to the series. I would recommend reading the series in order and cannot wait to read the next one in the series
I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

EXCERPT: ...it is done.
The coffin is in the ground.
Hands land all over my back, reassuring, comforting. Some brief, some linger.
everyone wants to offer something, some indication, a token of their grief. They want me to know. They want me to share. They offer it as a gift of their own humanity.
And I don't give a fuck.
My comfort doesn't come from them.
Neither does it come from the knowledge of eternal peace.
It doesn't come from the platitudes and clichés, the well-wishers, cards, flowers or the phone calls. It doesn't come from the short time we had together.
It comes from the rage. It comes from the white, hot anger that burns in every pore of my body, every atom of my being.
My comfort comes from the plan.
My comfort comes from the knowledge. The knowledge that everyone responsible will die.
ABOUT THIS BOOK: Eeeny meeny, miney, moe. Who lives, who dies only I know.
When the body of a doctor is discovered brutally murdered in local woodland, Detective Kim Stone is shocked to discover the victim is Gordon Cordell – a man linked to a previous case she worked on involving the death of a young school girl. Gordon has a chequered past, but who would want him dead?
As the investigation gets underway, Gordon’s son is involved in a horrific car crash which leaves him fighting for his life. Kim's sure this was no accident.
Then the body of a woman is found dead in suspicious circumstances and Kim makes a disturbing link between the victims and Russells Hall Hospital. The same hospital where Gordon worked.
With Kim and her team still grieving the loss of one of their own, they’re at their weakest and facing one of the most dangerous serial killers they’ve ever encountered. Everything is on the line. Can Kim keep her squad together and find the killer before he claims his next victim?
The killer is picking off his victims at a terrifying pace, and he’s not finished yet.
MY THOUGHTS: Angela Marsons, you have done it again. You had me in the opening paragraph and by the end of the prologue I would have cut off my arm rather than put this book down. Every time I start one of Marsons' books, I think that it can't possibly be as good as the preceding one, and every time I am proved wrong. Fatal Promise is no exception.
This is a book about choice, and has two parallel story lines. For while Kim's team is investigating a surgeon's murder, Stacey is continuing to investigate the case of a missing teenage girl, a case she was assigned to in the team she was working with while waiting for Kim to come back from her medical leave. At the same time the team is trying to regroup, coming together for the first time since Dawson's death, and the undercurrents of emotion from dealing (or not dealing) with the situation flow strong. I felt so sorry for Penn, the newcomer to the group, who bore the brunt of their anger for, although he had worked with them on a case previously, he has been proposed as Dawson's replacement, something none of them are yet comfortable with.
I love the way Marsons reveals little tidbits about her characters that make them all the more human, more believable. At the same time she weaves a dark and disturbing story of revenge and the inability of people to take responsibility for their own actions.
Although this is a series, the books could probably stand on their own, but why would anyone want to miss out on such a great series? Read. Them. All.
Not to be missed! 💕💖💕💖💕
THE AUTHOR: Angela is the author of the Kim Stone Crime series. She discovered a love of writing at Primary School when a short piece on the rocks and the sea gained her the only merit point she ever got.
Angela wrote the stories that burned inside and then stored them safely in a desk drawer.
After much urging from her partner she began to enter short story competitions in Writer's News resulting in a win and three short listed entries.
She used the Amazon KDP program to publish two of her earlier works before concentrating on her true passion - Crime.
Angela is now signed to write a total of 16 Kim Stone books for http://bookouture.com and has secured a print deal with Bonnier Zaffre Publishing.

Fatal Promise (Detective Kim Stone Crime Thriller Book 9)
by Angela Marsons
Bookouture
Mystery & Thrillers
Pub Date 19 Oct 2018
I am reviewing a copy of Fatal Promise through Bookouture and Netgalley:
Only the killer knows who the next victim will be.
After the discovery of a brutally murdered man Detective Kim stone is shocked to discovered the Doctor they discovered is Gordon Cardell a man who was linked to an earlier case she worked on involving the death of a school girl. Gordon has a checkered path but Detective Stone does not know anyone who wants him dead.
When the investigation gets underway Gordon's son is involved in a horrible car crash that leaves him fighting for his life. Kim is certain that the accident was no accident that it was intentional.
A woman's body is found dead, under suspicious circumstances and while on the case case Kim makes a disturbing link between the victims and Russell's Hall Hospital. This is the same hospital where Gordon worked.
While still grieving the loss of one of their own the team is at its weakest and yet have to face the most dangerous serial killer of their career. Will Kim be able to keep her squad together and capture the serial killer before he strikes again.
I give Fatal Promise four out of five stars!
Happy Reading!
Another A1 book in Angela Marson's D.I. Kim Stone series. I have read all 9 - the last 4 in quick sucession eager to dive into the series. Each book builds upon the previous ones as the reader learns more about characters. The style of writing is addictive. I have been engaged from beginning to end of each book, and then left wanting more.
Fatal Promise followed my favourite book in the series so far so it had a hard act to follow. I was not disappointed. Angela Marsons seals herself as a Queen of Crime Novels with each publication.
With excellent pace, intrigue and thrill, along with exceptional detail which I thoroughly enjoy and learn from, Angela Marsons remains one of my must read authors.
My only frustration now is having to wait for book 10. I just hope that there are several after that one too.
Nine books in and I get just as excited about each new book as I did when I first two years ago. And the best thing, I'm NEVER disappointed!
Marsons has kept this series fresh and relevant and completely compelling.
I'm not to rehash the plot, just trust that the blurb tells you what you need to know and that it is brilliant.
What I am going to talk about is the team.
And what a team they are. Still reeling from the events of book eight, they are struggling and just when you think know everything about them, Marsons reveals more about their pasts and personal lives making you fall even further in love with them.
Stone is one of the most complicated characters around, she is strong, her childhood would have crippled anyone else but not Kim. Kim takes all the hurt and pain and channels it into making herself be the best cop she can be, whether that means doing things by the book or not, she does what she needs to to get justice.
She is fiercely protective of those she loves, not that she'd ever admit to loving anyone mind!
Book eight saw irreparable damage to the team dynamics and book nine sees them adjusting to that change and it's heartbreaking. I've said before that each book is like a family reunion, and it's so true. I've connected with these characters and I feel their pain. I feel everything for them. As we watch them struggle with the new way their lives are going to be from now on, we see a side to some of them that we haven't seen before, new dimensions and new feelings.
It's amazing how Marsons manages to keep it so fresh but testament to her superb writing skill that she does.
Once again, Marsons is on top form and Fatal Promise is set to be another bestseller and is a turning point in a series that goes from strength to strength.
Fast and pacy, gritty and compelling, Fatal Promise is so much more than a police procedural.
Now hurry up with book ten please!

I can’t say too much about this story as a lot of the focus relates to what happened in the previous book which was absolutely superb.
As you expect from the author the book is fast paced and kept you on the edge of your seat throughout. It was great to also see Stacey take on a larger role in the story's plot.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me to have an advanced copy of the book. This was another fantastic read by Angela Marsons.
To be honest, I hadn’t yet recovered from Angela Marson’s last Kim Stone book (Dying Truth) when I saw that the new installment was already out! I admit I was kind of angry when I finished reading #8, but of course, I still wanted to continue reading this series, as it’s one of my favorites. I love how Angela Marsons continues to write amazing mysteries every time, and they’re always thrilling and addictive as the first one.
Fatal Promise was another great book featuring two different cases that our team have to solve as soon as possible. One of the characters from the last book is actually the victim in this one, and there’s a mysterious serial killer who’s not stopping anytime soon… As usual, the plot was top-notch. And the prologue featuring the mysterious killer was so fantastic that it grabbed me right away. This is not a slow-burn at all.
As I kept on reading, I realized Stacey’s case about the missing girl was the one that I was most interested in. This mystery was not entirely unpredictable because of a certain fiction with the same plot that has become popular this year, but I nevertheless thought the young girl’s story was heartbreaking and emotional. I always love this kind of revelations.
As for the characters, I really loved the new addition and I enjoyed learning more about his backstory. And of course, I liked that Stacey was more of a protagonist this time around. Kim’s personal storyline was also really touching and I almost cried during certain scenes.
I'm a big fan of this series. I was excited to have the opportunity to read this book. Fatal Promise is the 9th book in the D.I. Kim Stone series. You definitely need to read the previous book, Dying Truth, before reading this one.
This is a very well written, fast-paced, psychological thriller with a great twist. But both Kim and Stacey irked me which prevented me from really enjoying this book. However, I will definitely read the next book in the series and I highly recommend this whole series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of Angela Marsons' "Fatal Promise" in exchange of an honest review.
I love how this series is developing. To learn so much more about the past of the characters within is almost more compelling than the storyline itself.
I am already so enthralled by Penn and admire his ability to overcome in the face of adversity.
As usual Angela Marsons has swept me away with a tale of intrigue, twists, turns and dead ends which are thought provoking and add pace, urging you on to search for answers. We see Kim at her most raw as the reader peels away more of her complex layers. A character who you want to shake some sense into but also hug away her fears. Whatever is next? Another unputdownable thriller. Highly recommend.
This was my first Angela Marsons book and it was so fantastic I stayed up late to finish it and so now all I want to do is go back and start from book 1 which I admit I should have done in the first place. The writing is superb and the characters are strong and make for a brilliant read, full of intrigue and lots of twists and turns it makes for a police procedural with a whole lot more besides..I just loved it.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I actually feel sad that I don't get the time to read as often as I once did, especially when you read a book as good as this one. I ready this straight off the back of book 8 and am so pleased I did so I am not up to date with all the Kim Stone books. After what happened in book 8, I wondered how this book would fare and if we would see any additional characters. Sure enough with the loss of Dawson still fresh in everybody's mind, Penn arrives as the new boy. Bryant, Kim and Stacey all have their own way of dealing with the loss of a close friend but this book feels like it strips back all the characters to their bare bones and I absolutely LOVED that.
The case they are working on is the murder of Gordon Cordell who coincidently appeared in the last book. It feels like Marsons is wrapping up the last book and getting all the characters ready for the next new chapter. If I am being totally honest I enjoyed the storyline surrounding the murders but the character stories were just so much more appealing in this latest installment. I also loved the second thread running through which is that of a missing teenager and Stacey decides to pursue this in addition to the current case.
This latest book is pure magic and is probably one of my favourites that Angie has produced. I think after the last book I wondered where she would take the story and characters but she has raised the bar once again for herself (not sure she can reach any higher) with a tense and utterly compelling read. I cannot WAIT for the next book and think the team has a real fresh start ready for the next case now. An absolute corker of a book and an amazing series, one which I would highly recommend!
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. This is the first book I tried to read by this author and really should read the them in order so my review is very short.
Great story. I love anything by Angela Marsons. They are gripping and intelligent thrillers, I cannot get enough!
The case is challenging - the death of a doctor, then the death of his son. Then the death of an elderly woman and her daughter. How are these cases connected and what is motivating the killer? DI Kim Stone is struggling to hold it together, and it seems the killer has the upper hand...
Why are the team struggling? It's not only the case, it's the loss of their colleague DS Dawson (killed in the previous book).
Meanwhile, DC Stacey has taken on an investigation of her own. She's been dumped with their new team member, someone who can never replace Dawson and she's looking into the case of a missing school girl.
The team dynamics in this one are great. There are plenty of poignant moments as the team struggle to carry on without Dawson. Some of them welcome the new team member and others turn against him.
The crimes are as gruesome and twisted as usual in this series.
Another great book from Angela Marsons.
4.5 stars.
Another incredible instalment of the Kim Stone series. This author can do no wrong, as far as I am concerned.
Kim is still trying to come to terms with the loss of a colleague and she doesn't take too kindly to someone else occupying his desk, even though he was known to her team during a previous case and well-liked then. On top of dealing with their grief, a challenging case comes their way.
A doctor who was involved in a previous case, is found murdered. Then other bodies start piling up, all of them having some connection with this doctor. What links the cases? And will Kim and her team find the killer before even more people end up dead?
As usual, the storyline just flowed, the characters were real, easy-to-relate-to people and my heartrate was elevated the entire time!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.
Kim Stone is back, after being in hospital. Her colleague has been killed and she is struggling at work. I really enjoy this series of books and I love the character development. I have to advise starting with book one though. Angela Marsons is fast becoming a favourite author. My thanks to Net Galley for my copy. reviews on Amazon, Goodreads and Facebook.
