Wow, what a wonderful trio of books! The story of Billy in London as Hitler looms in the near future, while his cousin Kenneth, adored by the family as the frail and artistic wunderkind, enters his life; is haunting and beautiful. Billy sees a different, frightening side to Kenneth as he is bullied and oppressed by this manipulative older boy.
Billy is evacuated, away from his family, in the country where he lives with a poor, but kind family. Upon returning home to London, it's evident Kenneth rules the family. Billy once again flees to the country to review escape the bombing.
I felt so much empathy for Billy; the horror of the war and the oppression by Kenneth felt unbearable. Billy will be in my mind for a long time to come. Highly recommended.
