Re-tellings of fairy tales are always a bit tricky. Overall it was an enjoyable and easy read, with few minor times when I couldn't connect with the main character,

What happens when the big bad wolf turns out to be a big not-bad werewolf? You get a romance/fantasy novel with Red Riding Hood and a werewolf.

Ruby - nicknamed Red - is a hunter, part of the Dakota Guard whose job is to hunt down werewolves who terrorizes her home. And she is really very good in it. But then the unthinkable happens. One night when her grandmother fails to return from foraging Red goes looking for her. But what she finds is so not what she expected. Her whole life turns upside down and she starts questioning everything she did in the name of the Dakota Guard.

I read this book in just 2 days (it would have been 1 but I had to go to work). The story, the characters kept me interested, I was really curious what will happen to them. I like strong, independent female lead characters and Ruby is just like that, But she can be vulnerable too and that makes her all the more real.
The story is easy to follow but I felt it was a little hurried, everything happened too fast.

Intensely captivating with an excellent storyline, the characters are great and the tale an interesting and entertaining one. Red a guard in the village and Lucas the visible outsider became enmeshed into turmoil, and chaos at the passing of her Gran, amid a village full of fear and distrust. The guards' job was to protect the villagers from the vicious attacks of the wolves and werewolves. Although Red was the best archer in the whole guard section she now finds herself at a crossroad with what she was thought and what she witnessed. Amidst all the chaos and confusion, Lucas and Red found love, that of true mates.

Re-tellings of fairy tales are always a bit tricky. Red had a very high rating, so I was very curious. However, I didn't really liked this version. The story is about Red, who lost her parents to some vicious beasts: (were)wolfs. Since then, she is living with her grandmother and she joined the town's army to find and hunt the beasts.
But one night, when her grandmother goes missing, she goes after her. And she finds her, being protected by the very creature that she has been hunting all her life.
So, she can't go and kill the werewolf. But the laws of her town state she should kill the beast. So now she is torn between rescuing the beast and defying her town or obey the rules.
What a moral dilemma. And that was pretty much the crux of the story. So, interesting, not very believable and a bit boring. Three out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

A dark, tough and gritty take on the classic fairy tail little red riding , with engaging characters w and a writing style that keeps you on your toes!

Synopsis

Ruby ‘Red’ Locklear was eight years old when she watched wolves tear apart her family before her very eyes, only just escaping with her life. Years later, Ruby continues her vow to kill every last wolf she sees being apart of the village elite Dakota Guard, a way to continue her training with her skills with a bow and arrow, she has made a name for herself as the only woman amongst the ongoing war against the werewolves. This reputation has reached further from the village than she realises.

With only her grandmother as her last remaining family, Ruby can’t help but be clouded with fear whenever she leaves for a hunt, never knowing if this farewell will be her last. So when she returns from a hunt to find her grandmother gone after foraging for berries in the forest, Ruby fights down her fear and breaks the law of the village and sneaks out after sunset to find her. Ruby finds herself doubting everything she has fought for when a wolf she confronts on her journey offers to help.

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this story, a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. The author has included just the right amount of detail from the original fairytale. The colour red; this being Ruby’s hair, the basket; which her grandmother was using to forage for berries, Grams herself and of course the wolf in disguise as a werewolf. Ruby’s nickname ‘Red’ was a nice little feature from Once Upon a Time. Besides that, we’ve got a great individual fantasy tale of mystery, romance and dark terrors that hide within the depth of the surrounding forest of Dakota.

Ruby aka ‘Red’ was told really well being a strong independant fighter after her family was murdered. The determination to keep her grandmother safe is a great aspect of her character as it shows bravery in the face of death when she would sacrifice her life and the rules of the village to bring her home safely. The author has done a great job at keeping grounds with her humanity with how she trembles when she’s scared and her inner thoughts that tell her to run from danger. She isn’t fearless by any means but she’s got the courage she needs to get past the fear that threatens to consume her. Even when her feelings for Lucas being to emerge, they are almost innocent, keeping in mind that she is still quite young at heart whilst becoming a woman.

‘When my gaze landed on the empty spot where she usually kept her foraging basket and gloves, the lump in my throat plummeted. All the heat bled from my skin, and my teeth chattered. She was still out there. I glanced at the dark woods, and a shiver grabbed hold of every cell. The last time I was in the forest at night, my family was slaughtered.’

Gram was definitely one of my favourite characters. Almost 80 years old, she’s a strong and capable old woman who doesn’t rely on anyone to tell her what she is able to do, even Ruby. She’s the heart and soul of the village and ensures that her strong stubborn will is respected in kind. Even when she is injured in the forest, she refuses to give up and stands up for what she believes is right, even if it goes against everything the village has fought against. Gram doesn’t take no for an answer. The hero amongst heroes.

‘Gram moaned and I almost let the arrow sail, but I stalled when her soft voice whispered, “Ruby, story.”
The wolf’s gaze was neither afraid nor angry. If I read the creature right, it would have been compassion I saw, but I dismissed that as insane.
“Gram, move,” I said through clenched teeth.
“No. Even if I could, I wouldn’t”

All the characters within the story have a well told part to play, from the head of the Guard, Remy with his intense rules and vigorous training, it’s nice to see a kindness in him just under the surface when he accepts the cookie off Red. Of course we need the best friend that has secret feelings for our protagonist . Travis is handsome, clever and will always put Red first. He’s made his intentions known for his feelings for Red which she tries to dismiss or cast off by means of distraction at every turn. He sways in the middle but we know he’ll always be there when she needs him the most.
Don’t forget our new werewolf stranger that’s come into Ruby’s life. Lucas Bayo, with the playful shine in his bright blue eyes, his strong muscled body that seems to always be lacking a shirt to the unexpected gentlemanly behaviour around her as a werewolf.

‘I stepped into the living area, and Lucas was sitting at the table waiting for me. Both our plates were brimming with venison, and a half loaf of bread sat sliced between them.
“Thank you,” I said and took the seat opposite him
“You’re welcome.” He focused on the food in front of him.
For a lone werewolf, he seemed to have impeccable manners. What he finally looked up, his cheeks flared red.
“What?” he asked.
“I’m just surprised you have manners,” I mumbled and cut another piece of perfectly cooked venison. I also did not want to admit to him that he was a better cook than I was.’

The story setting is well described throughout to include all of the necessary features, the darkness of the forest at night with just illuminating eyes of the wolf, the various wolf pelts surrounding their home as a means to protect them from the iron bars and thin mattress within the cells they find themselves in. Little features for short story but enough to really put you in the minds of the character.
I’m looking forward to reading more of the works of J.E. Taylor.

If you love your fairy tales on the adult side, and amazingly retold then you’ll enjoy Red the first in the Fractured Fairy Tales series.

Ruby is strong, fierce and independent. She carries her own views of her world, right or wrong, and can, when faced with something totally unusual in her realm of reality, change her mind… eventually.

It’s a bit steamy, a bit of a mystery, a romance with the most unlikely couple… and it is totally enjoyable and addicting. I loved every moment in this world and plan to return.

This is Little Red Riding Hood for adults, and there are some delicious and unexpected twists and turns in Red. I enjoyed this one very much and intend to pick up the rest of the series. If you love Paranormal, Fantasy, Retelling of Fairy Tales… then you’ll be wanting to check out this series. You’ll never look at the old fairy tale the same way ever again.

This is a quick read, a gripping story, which is a twist on the classic tale "Little Red Riding Hood". It's about fitting in, about opening your mind and finding new perspectives. It's also ultimately a romance.

The Good: the story flows easily, I was almost instantly connected to and invested in the protagonist. There are a few happy moments, but more sad / tragic / action filled ones. Our heroine has to go through quite a lot, until she gets her reward (yes, there is a HEA).

The Not-So-Good (for me at least): the book setting is in the classical world of Red Riding Hood, so think sometime medieval. People are using horses as transports, swords and bows are their main weapons. The language used is a bit too contemporary for me to really fit this setting. I was always wondering if somehow this was a dystopian setting, after something horrible happened and threw society back a few hundred years because technology was gone?

All in all I really liked the book, in spite of all the hard situations Red had to go through. This is an adult book, with some steamy sex scenes (which I could take or leave).

Red by J. E. Taylor, an interesting take on the classic tale of Red Riding Hood. Now she is grown up and out to take revenge on the monsters who tore her childhood from her. So what happens when one of those monsters isn't so monstrous?

This is a fairytale twist on the classic telling of Red Ridding Hood. I haven’t seen a storyline like this one which wins big points for originality for me. Some of my favorite parts of the book is the authors creativity I wasn’t sure what I was going see when I dived into this book. The authors writing style kept me focused on only the book instead of getting distracted with comparing the differences from Red Ridding Hood to this original work done by J.E. Taylor.
