An interesting look at the reasons behind the gaps in turnout in the US elections. A timely book with an even higher importance given recent events.
THE TURNOUT GAP by Bernard L. Fraga deals with “Race, Ethnicity, and Political Inequality in a Diversifying America.” In this scholarly text, Fraga argues that voters tend to turn out at higher rates when their votes matter and he uses demographic data from the 1800s forward to show the history of the limited impact which minority voters have had. This text is obviously highly relevant as Fraga traces the increasingly unrepresentativeness of election results. Despite the important information, THE TURNOUT GAP is so filled with statistics and data that it seems highly daunting for our high school students who are turning instead to Carol Anderson's recent work.
