This was a good book with lots of potential to expand into a series. My only disappointment was that it seems to come to...not a cliffhanger...an abrupt ending. I think it could have been wrapped up better.
Sorry Stephen, but this book can be described in one word; juvenile. I had to stop reading.
In the beginning I made notes of misspellings and grammar mistakes but then I got to thinking of the material I was actually reading. Don't get me wrong, I finished other books that went 'wrong', but the pose was far more artful with those books. Character development was very cliche, and not very believable.
So where do I start. I know that the book is about were-animals. I got that, but federal agents don't sit and wait in the home of a person they want to interview. They don't strip that person and fondle her breasts. They talk and act like idiots. As I continued reading, I had to ask myself if the book was worth reading or a waste of time. It was a waste of time.
Mind you now, I don't write and I don't think I could do better.
I have to agree with Janet Newport that this book is for an "immature, pubescent boy", who "would enjoy the sex, the violence, the gore, the silly supernatural elements". I used to be a immature pubescent boy, and I read books like this all the time back then. I had no use for pose or plot, just get me to the next time panties are removed (without qualms), or a teenage girl is felt up. The fact is, despite what my wife would say, I am no longer a "immature, pubescent boy".
I propose a new category; Young Adult BOY or YAB.
I only made it through 50% of the book before I had to quit. Most of the action was just not believable. Olivia is indestructible and undefeatable and always comes out on top in every situation. Thwarting an attack on the president, stopping a hijacking, becoming a stripper, bringing down human traffickers, none of this is a problem for Olivia. No one is that infallible. The villains were all so despicable and there were just too many of them. The kids were bullied in vicious ways in almost every scene where they appeared and it seemed like everyone was evil except Olivia and her kids. The other characters just weren't very likeable either. I just didn't like it. I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publishers for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Azure Spider Publishing for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. First time reading this author. I am not sure what to say or how to date this book. I sort of enjoyed the first half. This is a dark story overall, and as a woman not subjects that I enjoy reading about- human trafficking, and rape.. I found Olivia relationship with Cary to be odd. The way she accepted his marriage proposal. Just odd and cold. I skimmed a lot as I just wanted to be done. I rate this a 2.5.
Thank you NetGalley and Azure Spider Publications for this arc.
Reading this book was a reminder of something I experienced 40 plus years ago. I was in my 1st year of college at the time and some friends suggested dressing up for the Halloween Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Alabama Movie Theater. Sounded better than studying whatever at the time so I got dressed up and went. College students do tend to do some silly / dumb stuff.
This was like that..... the first third of the book was "campy" fun..... the second third was tiring ( same old, same old, the bad guys seemed never ending) and the last third felt like real punishment. I can't believe I finished it.
I can however, see that an immature, pubescent boy would enjoy the sex, the violence, the gore, the silly supernatural elements (X-Men?? Mutant Ninja Turtles?). They'd probably have a tough time keeping up with the overly complicated plot line however. Not to mention the seemingly endless number of characters. I could not recommend this for anyone looking for any depth of characters or logical story line.
1.5 stars rounded up.
