Due to a passing in the family a few years ago and my subsequent health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for years after the bereavement. Thank you for the opportunity.

The Crying Season by D.K. Hood is the fourth book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series. This was a page-turner straight from the beginning, which makes for an enjoyable, suspenseful read! I highly recommend.

During Hiking season in Black Rock Falls Jenna and her team are called to investigate a human skull in the forest. Soon when another body is discovered Jenna knows she is chasing a serial killer and to beat him she will have to enter and hunt him in his own turf which might prove to be very dangerous.

The Crying Season by D.K. Hood is the fourth book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series and can be easily read as a standalone. This is another action packed thriller with lots of twists & turns will keep you hooked to the end.

I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

A really engrossing read, full of action and tension. I was gripped from the very beginning. The crimes are a bit gorey but no worse than I've come to expect in many crime novels, certainly not OTT. I've read other books from the author and loved them too. Great ending!

This is already the fourth book featuring Detective Kane and Deputy Alton, and honestly said, it gets better every time. The personal dynamics between them, is offset against very gruesome deaths that they end up investigating together! I enjoyed this book, and did not see the ending coming!!!! Highly, and I mean it, highly recommended.

The Crying Season – D.K.Hood

As always D.K.Hood has delivered us a blinking god read. This is the fourth book in the series set in Black Rock Falls. In my opinion these would be best read in series order rather than as standalones. I think that the author has given us quite a bit of background information more specifically when it comes to whos who and who they really are.

I’d like to say welcome back Sheriff Kane and Deputy Alton, a grizzly murder in the woods of Black Rock Falls, Montana. It’s hunting season and the woods are full of hikers, hunters and wildlife. While hiking two tourists find a skull on a trail meaning business as usual for Kane and Alton. Initially Jenna thinks the skull is from the local reservation but that idea is soon ruled out, as another body is found shot and tied to a tree. The investigation is hampered somewhat due to the blizzards, but as the old saying goes ‘where there’s a will there’s a way’.

It becomes obvious that this murderer seems to have a penchant for young tourist couples, couples who are hiking off the beaten track, looking for the more secluded areas. The killers’ pattern seems to be hunting the females for thrills and killing the males in a rather gruesome fashion. While checking out the crime scene they find what appears to be motion sensitive cameras, is he filming this for kicks or is there something else, something seedier?

The story is told to us mostly from the investigators perspective interspersed in part from the killer and his reasons. I have to say that the killer is most definitely a bit of a fruit and nutcase and could do with a few psychiatric sessions, although the madness made for good reading.

I always enjoy and look forward to this series something that surprises me as at the moment my favourite genre is British crime/police procedurals but I happily step away from them for a Kane and Alton book.

Read for an honest review. Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture

I really enjoyed this title immensely, but am not sure it is quite as good as the previous one. The writing style seemed a little different. having said that, it is still a bloody enjoyable read!

I’m loving this series and it just keeps getting better. It’s hiking season in Black Rock Falls and hikers are coming from all over. When a skull is discovered in the forest Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane are on the case. As they are heading to the scrne to investigate they find another skull tied to a tree along the way and then a couple goes missing and it becomes clear they are dealing with a serial killer. The killer is targetting couples and live streaming the murders leading to a very compelling tale that draws you right in and keeps you hooked until the very end. Loved it and can’t wait for book 5!!!

Thank you to Bookouture, D.K Hood and NetGalley for the arc of The Crying Season my review is honest and unbiased.

The crying season by DK Hood.
Sheriff Jenna Alton and deputy David kane are back. This time a killer is targeting couples and hunt them in the forest. He is quick and evil. Can Jenna and her team stop him?
Omg an absolutely fantastic read with great characters. Loved kane and Jenna. I was on the edge of my seat for the part of the forest. Don't want to give anything away but there is shocks and twists galore. I had no idea who it was. I didn't realise this was book 4. But I still was able to read it. 5*. Highly recommended.

Only in Black Rock Falls will you find a Sheriff who is an ex-DEA Agent in witness protection with a new name and a new face, a Deputy who was a sniper and member of the Special Forces Investigation Command and another who is also the ME.

When a hiker finds a human skull in the forest of Black Rock Falls, Detective Jenna Alton and her team investigate ... with surprising results. They find the skull, and numerous scattered bones, as well as the skeleton of what appears to be a man tied to a tree with an arrow between his eyes and riddled with bullets.

And those aren't the only bodies they find .....

THE CRYING SEASON can be read as part of the series or easily as a standalone. I highly recommend starting at the very beginning. Not only is it a fascinating story on how the three main characters came together, but their story is woven through an action-packed page-turner. I especially enjoy how the characters relate to each other ... with caring, respect, humor and sometimes a little sarcasm ... but it's the way they go about solving crime in their little town that sets them apart.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This book is possibly my favourite from the series so far, it is well written, has a gripping plot and some brilliant characters. The ending was superb and I couldn’t wait to find out how it all ended and I can tell you I certainly wasn’t disappointed!!

There’s another killer in Black Rock Falls. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane are alerted to this fact when a pair of tourists discover a human skull when out hiking. Then the same couple become victims themselves.
Their final operation to try and catch the killer leaves members of their team in mortal danger. Plenty of twists and turns and lots of suspects to keep the reader gripped from the beginning.

Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and DK Hood for the ARC in return for an honest review.

Detectives Kane and Alton are once again faced with gruesome murders in their small town. The victims are found along old hiking trails in the woods and it doesn't take long to realize that they have a vicious serial killer to track down.

This is another amazing book in this series. I absolutely love D.K. Hood and this entire series. Highly recommended!

This was my first D K Hood book and I loved is and my only regret is I should have started at book 1 first however in no way did this spoil at all how much I enjoyed it and was stunned how good it was so now I will take some time and read the previous ones in the series. A dark read in parts and this something I always enjoy and a well thought out plot that was beautifully written especially the camaraderie between the members of the team. So this is a big hit for me and can't wait to read the others in this fabulous series.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

D.K. Hood is a really enjoyable author. The characters in the Kane and Alton series are well developed. Hood does not waste time outlining the previous books in the series to catch the reader up. This is a good thing as too much repetition becomes tedious. I would say, however, for the first time it is bordering on not enough of a backstory. Without reading the previous three books in the series, one is left a bit in the dark as to how the characters have come together. There is mention of plastic surgeries, changed identities and mysterious pasts. The skills the characters have gained are well employed and believably so.

In all, the story is an enjoyable read. The prose flows well, weaving a tale of serial killer versus law enforcement. Good to know this bad guy isn’t really hunting the woods!

This is book 4 in the Kane and Alton series and I think, the best yet. I love the Montana setting and the character of Jenna. This is a tense, gritty mystery and well written to the last page. If I ever visit Montana, I am not hiking in a forest! I have no hesitation in recommending this series. A fantastic read. My thanks to Net Galley for my copy. Woah!!!! I have read and loved the previous three books by DK Hood in the Detectives Alton and Kane series and I’ve really, really enjoyed every one of them. So book four had to be read as quickly as I could and boy, I’m pleased that I didn’t wait.

I love reading about Sherrif Alton and her Deputy Kane, they’re great characters with good chemistry and for a small town in Montana, they sure have a lot of crime to deal with. DK Hood doesn’t hold back when describing the crimes, murders and crime scenes, that suits me fine but boy she does come up with some pretty awful stuff. I’m for one very pleased that these books are fiction!

I read The Crying Season in a few days, I just couldn’t put it down and had to keep reading. When I got to the end I remember taking a deep breath and I think that I’d been holding my breath for the last few chapters. What a climax it was!!! And boy I was not impressed when I thought that it had finished but thankfully the epilogue tied things up and made me feel better.

But since finishing I have thought about this book a lot, to say that I loved it would be an understatement and I just keep thinking ‘Wow’. I’ve loved all the books in the series but I think that this one has to be the best. If you haven’t read the others then do, you won’t regret it and you’ve got some brilliant books to read! I, for one, will be eagerly and impatiently waiting for book five. This series really does get better and better.

I think that this series is going from strength to strength and this one was absolutely gripping - I was almost too scared to read it before I went to sleep!

Jenna and Kane (seems kinda strange to call him Dave) are on the case when couples are murdered in the forest. The killer is certainly very clever in his approach and he is almost impossible to try and identify but these two and their very impressive team are up to the task so hunting season has begun!

This book was very gripping indeed, and I felt like I was in that forest myself, in Montana, it honestly made me shiver.

4.5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.
