Each book is getting creepier and creepier, and I have it on good authority that the next book is going to be even MORE creepier!!!
This is the fourth book in the series, and whilst you may potentially be able to read it on your own, I don’t want you to (demanding ah!). You would so be missing out on the team and the little details, but if you must you can read it on its own..but please don’t!!
I really could not guess who the big bad was in this book, and to be honest I could have been happy to not know. This serial killer is one crazy messed up person, they can have a ticket to a different crazy town to me and they can stay there!!!!!! There are no clues to who the perp is at all, (Well I didn’t think so!) and I was waiting on baited breathe with the rest of the team.
80% in the book and things go bat s**t crazy! I was flying through the book, heart in my throat, I felt like I was holding my breath, and there was a LOT of OMG OMG OMG OMG moments in my head! What was going on!! And then there was that twist and that ending, man I need the next book like yesterday!!! I can’t cope!
As said this story is much more creepier than before. Ms Hood’s writing is awesome, to put it in plain English, as you can picture the idyllic and peaceful forest, the sounds of the animals, the scenery and then the blood and guts are thrown in too. I devour every word on the page, I click my kindle button as quick as I could, as this story was haunting me. I could not figure out why this was happening and what the connection was!
Someone is hunting women, in hunting season, perfect cover story but there is a twist with this hunt, and it shocks you to the core. It is the sort of book I could picture on the big screen, it would be like a really epic 80’s slasher pic, I would love to see it!
The chapters when we are in the predator’s head were spine chilling. The thought process and lack of human emotion apart from the hunt, makes you realise how messed up they are! A person completely devoid of human attachment, with a secret cave of goodies. Aaaaaahhh, don’t run for the hills, stay in the main streets this time!
As always, I adore Kane and Alton’s relationship, the fact they are getting closer makes me so happy, still, the miscommunications and understanding with them are apparent. But happy days the team is back! Still loving the new additions and Rawley, he is just adorable. They work so well together, Kane beasting them to be better and Alton and her guidance and direction making them a well-oiled team.
This is my favourite go-to series of the year so far, I can’t fault the book, even with all the blood, gore and terrifying actions of a predator and the crazy reasoning behind said actions! Just makes you wonder what goes on in some people’s head!
I love everything about these books and really think the time needs to be invested here, so go buy the books, lock yourself away and fully immerse yourself to Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane and a little-known place called Black Rock Falls. (Thanks for stopping by with my rambles….*whisper* go buy the books)
Pssst…think this may just be my book of the month!
I became a huge fan of this series after reading Follow Me Home and the next installment from Detectives Kane and Alton left me sitting on the edge of my seat.
A skull is found in the woods surrounding the town of Montana and Detective Jenna Alton and her team are sent to investigate. When it becomes apparent that the skull is human and another body is found, Jenna knows that there is a serial killer loose on her patch.
The chapters alternate between the police procedural and the thoughts of the killer so the reader becomes immediately involved in the storyline. I love the dynamic between Kane and Alton, they almost know what each other is thinking and as the case becomes more dangerous it is good to know that they really have each other's back.
This is a step up on the creepy scale from Follow Me Home and makes a chilling Halloween read. Some of the descriptions were seriously spine-chilling and I was gripped to find out who the serial killer is. A dark and twisty thriller, brilliantly written with powerful characters and a plot that just grabs you and doesn't let you go!
I couldn't put this down, full of twists and turns, would recommend to anyone who loves police procedural books
4.5- After reading this book I knew I could not let it just end there> I had to go and get the other books in this series and learn to love DetectiveJenna from the very beginning. This was a suspenseful story with twists and turns that kept me at the edge of my seat and on my toes. As I started to read this I knew it was a series that I would enjoy tremendously. Thank you for allowing me to read this book NetGalley.
Imagine romantic weekend with your partner, in the woods. In a small town like Black Rock Falls, in a small private hotel. A romantic walk through the woods soon turns into something creepy. You find a human skull. Not a bobcat, not a bear, but human remains of a woman and a man. Not killed by animals, but by an animal with two legs, another human. You report everything to the local police and try to continue with the rest of the weekend. But, then, you realize that you are the prey. You and your partner are target of a twisted human mind who hunts other people for pleasure. And you are his next victims! And, no, you can’t escape, no matter how fast you run!
Detectives Kane and Alton are working on the case with the rest of the team. It seems that there is a serial killer who targets couples. In the middle of the hunting season there is a lunatic who actually hunts and kills people for pleasure. Can they catch him before another couple dies?
Wow! A creepy story full of action that made the hair on my neck stand! I tried to guess the culprit, but no, I couldn’t predict the ending. Which means only one thing, one hell-of-a-good thriller! I liked the detectives Kane and Alton. I haven’t read the previous book, so have no idea about the history of their relationship. I got the impression that they were on/off all the time. I didn’t find out too much about them, the main focus of the story was on the killer in the woods. And I loved it! The Crying Season is a fast pacing gripping thriller that will make you run for your life while you are sitting in your comfy chair in the very same time! Totally recommended!
This is the fourth book in the series featuring Detectives Dave Kane and Jenna Alton and is a fantastic rollercoaster of a book. There is a serial killer loose in Black Rock Falls. Dave and Jenna are called out when a skull is discovered on a hiking trail in the forest. Before long two more bodies are discovered. The killer is getting his kicks from hunting couples down, killing the man first and then torturing the woman. On carrying out their investigations they discover that the killer is recording and live streaming the killings. Dave and Jenna then use themselves as bait in an attempt to capture him. This is a very graphic read, leaving you feeling that you have been running in the forest and the tension is unbearable. I look forward to book number five to see if Dave and Jenna finally admit they have feelings for each other. This book is a great read, highly recommended.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
You know what? I genuinely don’t think that I would ever bore of Kane and Alton! These two are like the dream team of crime and getting justice for everyone who has ever suffered in their town. I mean, you have Kane, a man who is far more in tune with a killers psyche than a lie detector test, and Alton, a woman who has more guts than Bear Grylls! Honestly – this pairing makes for great entertainment and a belter of a read.
The more books in this series I read, the more gruesome they become. It’s as though the author has eased her readers in gently with book one, increasing the nausea factor by this book, number four! Totally not complaining at all – I absolutely loved the thrill in ‘The Crying Season’ as it kept me on tenterhooks the entire way through. There was even a small part of me which thought that Kane and Alton wouldn’t be able to find the killer as there seemed to be so many unanswered questions, dead ends, and enough uncertainty to create momentous doubt in my own mind, never mind other readers!!!
I don’t wish to give anything away, but be prepared to be taken on a very descriptive, highly suspenseful and extremely chilling read, as ‘The Crying Season’ is a book that is not to be missed!! I would suggest that readers do read the series is order so that you get the full picture of Kane and Alton’s friendship and past events!
A jaw dropping, brilliantly paced novel which had me surrendering almost straight away. I cannot wait to read more in this series – keep them coming!!!
‘Psychopaths are welcome in Black Rock Falls’
Winter is coming to Black Rock Falls. The temperature is dropping but this does not deter the hunters of Montana and not just those who are game hunting...
There is a serious psycho-hunter on the prowl! His MO is seriously twisted as MOs go but as I learnt more about his killing spree, my blood chilled with a shocking extra layer to the way this psychopath killer operates. D.K. Hood has created a extreme killer this time, I'm scared to think what goes on in this woman's head sometimes!
"Why do these lunatics keep choosing Black Rock Falls?"
As with the previous Kane and Alton books, I got to spend a bit of time with the evil individual who is tormenting Black Rock Falls. This psychopath is a strange individual, getting kicks from the hunt and the kill of his victims.
But the "well-oiled machine" that is the Black Rock Falls Sheriff's Department are on hand. I have loved this team since I met them back in Don't Tell A Soul. And as the team has grown in strength, they've become more rounded as a crime fighting team. Their team work is brilliant, each playing to their strengths and not afraid to learn new skills.
All I can say is D.K. Hood, you've done it again, another excellent crime thriller that is dark and twisted! Thank you and keep them coming!!
The hiking season in Black Rock Falls has arrived but when a hiker discovers a skull on one of the old trails sheriff Alton and her team start to investigate. Then a body is found.
Thoroughly enjoyable story and mystery, another good addition to this series. The characters simply just grow on you and helped to keep my interest right to the end.
The book can certainly be read as a standalone story but I would recommend starting from the beginning as they are all enjoyable books.
Excellent book with a great storyline. Characters that are so well written. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!
It is like other reviewers read a completely different book than I did. The story was just finr but the conversations were very stilted. Using a conversation to describe what is happening or where your thought processes are going is very artificial and unnatural. This type of writing technique was distracting and took away my enjoyment of the book.
The Crying Season by D.K. Hood is the 4th in the Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books):
Sheriff Jenna Alton is the Sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana. She is new to being Jenna Alton. She has a new name, and a new ID, because her past is still out there. She’s former DEA. Deputy David Kane also has a new name and new ID. Similar reasons. He’s a former Special Forces sharpshooter with exceptional profiling skills. Forensic Scientist Shane Wolf is not only a Medical Examiner with amazing computer skills, he used to be Kane’s handler. So, with a few other deputies, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small Black Rock Falls town, which seems to have more murders than a small town should.
My Synopsis:
It is hunting season in Black Rock Falls, and the surrounding forest trails and mountainous regions are filled with wildlife, and hunters. But there is one hunter out there that isn’t hunting wildlife. When hikers find a human skull, Jenna thinks it may have been from the local reservation, but that thought is quickly dismissed when another body is found, tied to a tree and shot multiple times.
More bodies turn up, and it looks like the hunter is killing the male, and hunting the female for sport. He may be video-taping his kills.
The only way to catch this guy may be to go undercover. Jenna looks a lot like his preferred prey.
My Opinions:
I am really enjoying this series as the author continues to add depth to her characters. Jenna finally showed real guts without Kane overshadowing her.
I also liked the way the story alternated between the killer and the police, as both tried to meet their goals. In this way, we got into the killers head a little, without any clues as to who he was.
These books have great plots, and are fast reads, always with a lot of action and plenty of suspects.
Once again, D.K. Hood kept me entertained!
It's written with thanks to Noelle at Bookouture for inviting me on the tour and for my copy of the book via Netgalley.
When two bodies are found in the woods at Black Rock Falls, Detective Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are called to investigate. As their investigations are just beginning, the body of another hiker is found and they suspect this is the work of a dangerous serial killer. They realise that the only way to catch him is to place themselves in danger. Will they capture the killer with their own lives in tact?
I'm relatively new to the Alton and Kane series having begun with the previous instalment, Follow Me Home, in June. I have quickly grown to love it, not least because it feels so different from other novels in the same genre. Set in a remote town in America, where sometimes the only way to reach crime scenes is on horseback, The Crying Season showed me a different side to police work, and I enjoyed being transported to the setting, which Hood describes beautifully even in the midst of several murders.
The relationship between Alton and Kane is also very different to those in other series. I love the way they bounce off each other, care for each other and seem to know what each other are thinking. I look forward to seeing this strengthen even further in future. The respect that Kane and Alton have for each other is extended into their team and I have also come to love these characters as much as Alton and Kane themselves, which makes a part of the ending especially sad. They each have particular skills and I was fascinated to see how these were used in the investigation; for example, Kane is a psychological profiler and I enjoyed following his conclusions and reasoning to try and solve the puzzles myself.
Hood is not afraid of a grim situation and from the outset we are treated to skeletons that have been mauled by animals, torture and lots of blood. It isn't for the faint hearted, but I relished it as I took in the tension and the creepy atmosphere, unable to tear myself away from my Kindle. I had no idea who the killer was, despite the clues that are planted in the chapters narrated by him, but I was desperate to see him apprehended.
I look forward to catching up with this series and reading more of it.
This is book #4 of the Kane and Alton series. It can be read as a standalone book, but it does make sense to read the series in order.
We are back in Black Rock Falls with Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane. It is hunting season but the Police Department find themselves on the trail of a different kind of hunter when a human skull is found in the woods that surround the town. When more bodies are found, Alton and Kane know they need to head off into the forest to try and find the killer….
This is an absolutely fantastic series. The first book of the series, Don’t Tell a Soul had me hooked and as I’ve read the following books I’ve realised that this series is going from strength to strength. I’m not usually a big fan of crime series set in America, I much prefer good old British crime, but this series is just so different. It takes you to a place that you don’t usually get to see, away from the crime riddled streets of New York or Washington and to a little town in Montana surrounded by mountains and forests.
This book was definitely scoring a 10 on my creep-o-meter! Could there be anything creepier or scarier than being hunted down in deep dark forest by a psychopathic killer? – Possibly not! I didn’t have a first inkling as to who the killer could be and was genuinely surprised when I found out as I didn’t expect it! You also don’t get to find out who the killer is until the very end, holding the suspense and tension all the way through the book.
We then come to the good Sheriff and her Deputy! They have to be my most favourite pairing of law enforcement officers to date! I love the way they work so well together and are continually looking out for each other. I have been waiting throughout the previous 3 books to see if they eventually get together and was hoping that this book would finally show their romantic side….but if you think I’m going to tell you if that happens, then you can think again! Read the book and find out! It was also good to see Wolfe in this book as well, although slightly disappointed that he took a bit more of a back seat in the storyline.
The storyline throughout was dark, tense and terrifying! It was nail-bitingly good and at the end of each chapter, I just wanted to keep reading right through the next! The ending was fantastic and it had me holding my breath throughout. This author certainly knows how to keep her readers in suspense and get their hearts beating faster! I literally cannot wait until the next book!!! Highly recommended! Absolutely brilliant!
Ooh this is a great read. I was literally holding my breath during the last few pages, desperate to know how this book would end.
The tension builds throughout the book as more and more bodies are found in the forest and Kane and Alton realise they have a serial killer on their hands.
The team work together to try and find the killer but in the end a dangerous plan is the only option to catch this clever killer.
Many lives are at stake but Jenna sees no other option and puts her life on the line.
This is a great series and the comraderie amongst the team is one of the things I love about it. The chemistry between Jenna and Dave is another and I just hope one day they’re both brave enough to admit their feelings.
I really can’t wait for the next book on this series.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Wow this did not disappoint - an easy 5 stars for the gripping thriller. I just had to keep reading to find out the killer's identity and the best crime books for me are when I haven't guessed the culprit and this did not let me down.
The first book I have read from this series (this is book 4) but that was fine as this was perfect as a standalone although of course I do now want to read the earlier 3 books. We are introduced to Detective Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane along with a handful of other police personnel that made up a fantastic team.
Our killer is hunting people in the woods and it is made more sinister by recording and live-streaming the acts and taking votes/instructions on how he kills them although this does not go into too much detail for the faint-hearted! Jenna and Dave are racing against the clock to play the hunters themselves and hunt down the killer who is raising their game and killing more frequently.
This truly was a fast-paced, exciting book that I struggled to put down. Not too scary that I could not sleep but with enough action to keep me focused!
I felt like there is definitely some room for a romantic storyline between the lead characters at some stage, this was being toyed with at times in this book, and I would love to see that happen but only if it wasn't to the detriment of the crime aspect of the novels.
Overall, I highly recommend this brilliant book!
My thanks to Bookouture via NetGalley for providing me with this advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is book 4 of the series but that didn't stop me from absolutely loving this one. It's just made me want to read the first 3. A brilliant, fast moving thriller that had me engrossed from the start. Plenty of twist and turns to keep you guessing right to the end. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to Noelle at Bookouture and Netgalley for my review copy of the book and for inviting me to participate on the blog tour.
Although this is the 4th in this particular series, I was able to follow the story well having not read the previous books. The author provides enough of the back story so that you aren't completely confused. It has however, now made me add the other books in the series of books to read!
The first chapter in the book is an excellent example to me of how to draw your readers in and make them carry on reading. Tense, gripping and edge of your seat stuff, you are desperate to find out more.. This completely had me hooked as I tried (and failed) to pick up clues along the way. I gave up eventually trying to second guess everything and just enjoyed being pulled along for ride!
The initial investigation begins when a skull is found in the wood of a trail in Black Rock Falls. Although thought to possibly be a skull from many years ago, the investigation soon turns into a full on murder hunt when another body is found tied to a tree with bullet holes. When another body is found.....and another, Alton and Kane have their work cut out to try and get to the bottom of it all. Who is doing this? What is their motive? Is think linked to something darker. Yes it most definitely is!
D K Hood as done brilliantly in setting up the tension in this story and doesn't really let up until the end of the book. I found myself almost biting my nails after each page as the action was continually ramped up. I have to say that I really liked the dynamics between Alton and Kane. They really worked for me and has made look forward to starting at the beginning and exploring their characters even more as from I've picked up from this book, they have both led pretty interesting lives...
What a brilliant introduction into the world of D K Hood...... Living in the UK, I don't hike as much as people do in the US...After reading this book, I never will!
Definitely recommended.
Detectives Kane & Alton #4
When two tourists find a skull, while on a trail while hiking, for Kane and Alton it just the start of something neither of them could have envisioned. We are back in Black Rock Falls, Montana, and a merciless predator is stalking the woods during the peak hunting season. The killer seems to be targeting young couples, who are mainly tourists, who want to spend some time alone in secluded areas.
Detectives Kane and Alton are back along with Wolfe and the rest of the team. They are seeking out a serial killer who targets couples. The body count is rising but will they be able to catch the predator before they strike again? This is a fast paced, well written edge of your seat read. There are plenty of twists in this gritty police procedural. I like Kane and Alton and their will they/won't they form a relationship. The main characters are likeable and work well together. I would never in a million years have guessed to the predator was. I love a book that keeps you buessing. This book can be read as a standalone but you will be missing out on a good series if you don't read them all from the beginning.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author DK Hood for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
OMG, D.K. Hood, I hope you are busy writing? I really can't wait for the next one. What did you do to me?
The whole time I sat on the edge of my seat, more than once crying 'oh, nooooo!' You really know of to keep one's attention, I'll give you that.
The thoughts are going around in my head trying to figure out who was behind all the crimes and I really nearly fell of my chair when the name was revealed. And then the ending ... It totally brought tears to my eyes.
I did not like Jenna's behaviour in the previous book, but now I see some positive changes.
This book is really fast paced with an all consuming air of danger and suspense. I am thoroughly happy that hiking is not my cup of tea. 5 stars.
Thank you, D.K. Hood, Bookouture and Netgalley.
