Emily Firestone was having a weekend on a boat with her boyfriend Paolo. Next morning he is gone. Emily has bipolar she cannot remember the evening. She endures investigation by the police. She begins to unravel. When one of Paolo colleagues contacts her murder follows. This is a rollercoaster ride with our main character. It gives you a great insight into the everyday struggle with bipolar.
I was given an arc of this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A gripping psychological thriller. As a psychologist, I was very interested in Emily Firestone, a fascinating character who has bipolar disorder. The depiction of someone with this disorder was spot on. I read a lot of thrillers and this one kept me guessing. I don't want to do any spoilers but just know that a sailing trip goes awry and Emily's boyfriend turns up missing. What's next for Emily? Her mania ramps up and she feels she is in mortal danger. Is she? Or is something else going on? Highly recommend.

An attempt at suspense that fell short. Emily is a psychologist who goes on a boating trip with her boyfriend. When she wakes up he is gone. The police suspect Emily who has a bipolar diagnosis and do not believe her story. Her boyfriend, Paolo, worked in a lab that was trying to create a vaccine for a potential pandemic. This part was interesting to read while we are currently living in a time with a real pandemic. The book follows Emily as she looks for foul play within the lab. Are they willing to kill someone to cover up for it? The book was very slow moving and had a lot of unnecessary filler.

I love a good psychological thriller and this one delivers. It has a fast paced plot and twists and turns all the way to the end. We meet Emily, a psychologist who has bipolar disorder (and is managing it well) and her boyfriend, Paolo, who go away on a sailing trip. All is well until Emily wakes up and Paolo is gone.

Emily is flawed and unreliable, which makes this book even better. I do appreciate the real world portrayal of bipolar disorder too. It made this book that much better in the long run! It is a breath of fresh air to see the author did their research and represent it well.

This is a thriller you need to grab that will have you up all night trying to figure it out!

This was a very exciting read. I loved the fact that the main character is bipolar, it added a layer of complexity and while I am no expert, I thought it was done really well, especially towards the end as the story reaches its climax and the truth is revealed. This is a great, fast-paced thriller that fans of the genre will most certainly enjoy.

ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for a honest review, thank you for that.
Structured well enough to keep me guessing and reading all in one sitting.
I definitely recommend this book and the author R. J. Jacobs.

Emily and her boyfriend Paolo spend a romantic weekend on a lake, when he disappears and she cannot remember what happened. To add to the mystery Emily is an extremely unreliable narrator and digging into the mystery of the night Paolo disappears reveals that he was part of an intense medical experiment of a deadly virus.

A fast paced book I felt a lot of frustration as I watched the struggles Emily faced because of her diagnoses and previous events in her life color her in unfavorable light.

Maybe not the best book to read as the world falls apart...yea corona...

"And Then You Were Gone" is very likely not a book I would have read without NetGalley. It's not typical for me to read stories like this with a rather cliche sounding synopsis. But, as I enjoy mystery books and unusual main characters, I definitely had to give this a read. While I found it to be as cliche as I expected, it was rather interesting to read from the perspective of a bipolar woman trying her hardest to keep herself together in order to figure out what happened to her boyfriend.

The main character, Emily, made it really hard to get into this book. Writing was disjointed and slow. Not my kind of "thriller".

*Many thanks to R.J. Jacobs, Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for arc in exchange for my honest review.*
A man and a woman who seem to be in love decide to spend a romantic weekend by the lake. At night something happens and the man disappears. The woman is unable to give a clear account of what she remembers. The plot sounds simple, however, if you add medical research covering a new medicament, it is definitely worth following.
I enjoyed reading this book mainly because of unreliable narrator who suffers from biopolar disease and in consequence makes the narration intriguing.

This is a fast-paced thriller that will leave you breathless as you try to figure out what happened. This story is about Emily and Paolo and their lovely little boat vacation. This book was a slow start for me but once I was in it was quite captivating. I love a good unreliable narrator and boy was Emily not reliable. There was drinking involved and she struggles to keep her bipolar disorder under control and of course this throws her and her life into a tailspin. The fear and mania she starts to feel is truly palpable. I couldn't put this book down.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Paolo takes Emily, who has finally managed to get her bi-polar under control, out on his boat for a romantic date. After a wine-filled evening, Emily awakens to find herself alone on the boat. A roller coaster ride through the police investigation reveals a different Paolo, and Emily must work to prove herself innocent in this missing man mystery. Jacobs does a great job of eliciting sympathy for his unreliable narrator, and the twists and turns are credible and gasp-worthy. Fans of Catherine Steadman’s Something in the Water and / or Kelly Simmon’s Where She Went will appreciate Jacobs’ style of storytelling. I received a digital copy of this fantastic thriller from the publisher through NetGalley.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
This thriller grabbed me from the first page (too bad I don't have more time for reading) and there’s no way I could have guessed how it ended. The plot was interesting. Would love to read more of R.J Jacobs books
