Overall this is a good read with plenty of action. There is a lot happening in this book. It is however really far fetched and unbelievable in places. If there had not been as much unbelievable action the book might have been more enjoyable.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
I have read several books by this author and always enjoyed them so had fairly high expectations when I started to read this one. Although I did enjoy the novel I felt just a little let down which is probably due to the high standard previously set by this author.
Maybe I am a little harsh with my review but although I enjoyed the book, I did the plot a little hard to believe at times. I am not put off though and fully intend to continue reading this authors books.
I would like to thank Net Galley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
You're driving home with your family. Another car cuts you up and – fearing damage – you get out to confront the culprit. Except … there's someone in the back seat and the words they scream threaten to change your lives forever.
This is the nail biting opening to One Dark Night, which proceeds to pelt along at full throttle. My heart was in my mouth as Adam, Katy and young children Freya and Dylan become embroiled in a complex tale of kidnapping, backstabbing and murder.
What I liked about this book – aside from the tension maintained throughout – was the juxtaposition of Mr and Mrs Average against a backdrop of crime at both low and high level. There is also a thread hinting at marital disharmony which plays out more fully towards the end. It took me just two days to read, and I will certainly check out more of the author's work. My thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing me with an advance copy.
To get my mitts on this little beauty, I must admit to being naughty, abandoning the book I was reading to begin One Dark Night, and have to say I'm glad I did!! The plot is absolutely fantastic, and I quickly felt invested in the family.
After a morning at the park with the children, they are driving home when another car cuts them up, causing a stone to fly up and smash their light. Being angry and upset, he confronts the driver when suddenly someone from inside the other car shouts for help, saying they have killed her husband. Caught in a difficult situation, the other car races off, only to block the road so they can't pass. With two scared children in the back, Adam immediately regrets his actions, even more so, when things rapidly go from bad to worse.
In this situation, it's difficult to write a review without giving away any of the intricately woven plot. What I can say, and absolutely guarantee, is that once you start reading, you will have to abandon everything else because it is impossible to put down! Trust me, I read for 6 hours straight, kidding myself, just one more chapter, until it was suddenly 5am!!!!
Tom Bale really does know how to reel you in!!
One Dark Night by Tom Bale is a gripping suspense read that will keep readers at the edge of their seat.
It is a perfect example how one's life can change it a split second. And it is absolutely terrifying to know that any of us can be in that situation just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Adam and his family are returning home from a Sunday outing when he witnesses three guys holding a woman captive. Before he can reacts his family is separated and taken to a basement in an isolated house somewhere in the country.
There starts a chilly and horrifying fight for survival. Fast paced and petrifyingly scary it keeps readers turning pages to see what will happen next and if the family will manage to escape.
Highly recommended for thriller lovers.
One Dark Night by Tom Bale started off with a bang... but for me it didn't keep going. It slowed down and then it really started to drag. The story was a good one but th characters didn't feel realistic and some of their actions were completely far fetched.
A family is on their way home on a Sunday morning when a speeding car cuts them upalmost causing an accident. The driver gets out to confront the other driver and that was his first mistake. In the other car is a woman screaming for her life. The family are them kidnapped and taken away to be locked up. Here is where it started to go wrong for me. So much on either the family locked up and then the kidnappers figuring out what to do.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased
Excellent book with a great storyline. Characters that are so well written. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!
Once again Tom Bale ramps up the pressure right from the outset presenting the reader with a scenario that makes them question what they would have done. Someone cuts you up in the car - what do you do? Flip them the finger or drive on or chase after them, one incident, two choices and you just know that the choice that this author makes is going to plunge you straight into a nightmare! I know that since reading this book, my mind is racing every time I'm driving along a country road and someone tries to cut me up!
I can't say much about the plot for fear of spoilers but what Tom Bale has done once again is to provide a cast of characters who will prod and poke inside of your head making you question all that you believe to be true. Is your life dull and routine? Do you wish for a little more excitement? Is your relationship a little too safe? Are you considering a future without your partner? Do you laugh at the eccentricities of those around you? Just what makes a bad guy? After reading this then you are going to be very careful what you wish for!
Adam and Katy find themselves caught up in a nightmare that there seems to be no escape from. Like most of Tom Bales books, you need to take the situation and magnify the consequences, be prepared to suspend your belief in order to lose yourself in a tense and taut psychological thriller that will fry your brain as you try to work our what you would do. A cast of stageworthy bad guys turn the screws so tight the reader is left wondering if it will be impossible for them to escape their fate. An ordinary family placed into an extraordinary situation, it will have your heart racing and your jaw dropping!
review will be on blog as part of the blog tour
One dark night is quite a terrifying read. The family are going home after a day out when they encounter a speeding car which throws up a stone and damages the family car. Of course road rage takes over, and what ensues is a horrendous few days for the family.
It all sets off a chain of events that no-one would have envisaged happening. From ordinary families to Russian oligarchs this is a well written gripping story. My thanks to the author, publishers and netgalley for the ARC.
One Dark Night by Tom Bale
Road rage had Adam seeing red…and in the end he saw red that he never would have imagined seeing if he had not chased that car! Do you ever question the actions you take or wish you had done one thing instead of another? I am sure that Adam had that happen more than once in this book.
This book went from fast-paced to medium speed than sped up again till the end. It had bad guys, a mystery to solve, kidnapping, murder, torture, an escape and a family on the edge that in the end became, I think, much closer to one another than they would have been if that car chase due to road rage had never occurred. I am sure that Adam and his wife Katy never took one another for granted and valued their relationship and family in ways they never would have otherwise.
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read other books by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and BOOKOUTURE for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4 Stars
Adam is driving his wife, Katy and their children, Freya and Dylan home one night when an erratic driver almost collides with them. The other car causes a rock to hit and break one of their headlights. Katy wants Adam to let it go and keep driving, but Adam follows the car, flashing his lights and beeping his horn. The other pulls over as does Adam. It is obvious that things are not going to end well when this happens. Ahh, if only he had listened to his wife. When Adam and the other driver get out of their cars, thing go from bad to worse, when a woman in the back of the other car calls for help, Jack and his family are caught in the middle of a nightmare.
The pacing in this book is fast and keeps the reader engaged. I liked that I was not given too much information. This book serves as a cautionary tale against road rage. Sometimes it’s best to keep going and not engage. In this book, the characters are pretty much in the dark and trying to figure out how one incident has drastically changed their lives. I didn't know what was going on either and I learned things at the same time the characters in the book did.
This book would make for a great plane book. It is pure escapism reading. It was entertaining and kept my interest throughout. This isn't a book where the reader really needs to try and figure things out - just read along and enjoy. There really isn’t any room for character development here. The action takes place in a relatively short period of time. There is tension and suspense.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘One Dark Night’ by Tom Bale in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
After an enjoyable day out, Adam, Katy and their young children Freya and Dylan are returning home along a quiet country road when a car overtakes them dangerously causing a stone to fly up and damage their headlamp. When Adam stops to remonstrate with the driver he notices a woman on the back seat of the other car seated between two men. When the woman shouts out “Help me, they’ve murdered my husband!” he realises that perhaps he should never have stopped.
‘One Dark Night’ is fast-paced thriller that's full of suspense, it has plenty of twists and turns and is nail-bitingly scary. I was gripped from page one and although I thought the plot a little far-fetched at times it was exciting nonetheless.
I’ve read some of Tom Bale’s other books which are fast paced thrillers which seem to catapult ordinary people into extraordinary situations and this book was no exception to that rule!.
It concerned the Parr family, Katy, Adam and their two young children who are embroiled in an extremely frightening situation after an event which really starts off as a road rage incident.
When a car nearly crashes into Adam’s car, damaging his headlight, Adam chases it down and demands money to fix it. However events take a turn for the worse and Adam’s family are suddenly in a terribly frightening situation and fear for their lives.
This novel starts off with a bang and it really sucked me in immediately. There is a slightly slower paced section in the middle and then the action escalates to an exciting crescendo at the end.
I don’t want to reveal too much as this will spoil the enjoyment and the twists in the plot but suffice it to say that this book had me on the edge of my seat and I read it in the space of a couple of days.
If you like fast paced, adrenaline fuelled thrillers then this is definitely the book for you.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my arc in exchange for an honest review.
My first book by this author and I have to say it was an interesting read.
I was immediately sucked into the story and when you thought what you were to expect, you were taking in a completely different direction. Once you caught up with that, the author forced your brain to adept once again.
The author takes you on a journey where he makes you realize what your actions can lead you and your family into. A clear case of action - reaction but in a very bad way and better think before you act.
This book is a clear example of expection the unexpected and for the fans of stories that are (a bit) over the top.
It's certainly my cup of tea, so I had a good time reading it. 4 stars.
Thank you, Tom Bale, Bookouture and Netgalley.
I've read and enjoyed a few of Tom Bale's thrillers in the past, so of course I couldn't resist his newest title. I mean, that cover alone is on fire! I've experienced so far that Tom Bale likes to write his thrillers to be fast, extremely intense, disturbing and overall shocking. One Dark Night is no exception to this rule and is yet another tense and nailbiting story. Intense is an understatement here! The writing style is lightning fast, gripping and draws you right in... If you are looking for an intense and disturbing thriller, you will get a healthy dose of creepy and extreme emotions right from the start. Because One Dark Night starts with a bang, and will keep you on edge until the very end. Sure, there seems to be a break in the middle, but be ready to get a plot twist bomb thrown at you and brace yourself for a surprise... Nothing is as it seems, and it will only be over when the author says it's over. That said, I did have to ditch a star for the overall lack of credibility of the plot. It seems more like something taken out of an action movie rather than something that could really happen, and a lot of events were quite farfetched and not really credible. If you manage to get your head around that and just let yourself be swept away by a rollercoaster story, you will end up having a blast anyway. And if you like your thrillers to be intense and disturbing, you can stop looking for your next read. A little warning for the weakhearted: graphic and violent scenes are included in One Dark Night, so consider yourselves warned.
A story of road rage that takes a serious turn for the worse.
I was hooked from the first page, I devoured this book. It was so full of suspense and tension. Some of the storyline was confusing and darn right unbelievable, parts of the book were too slow and predictable. It was definitely a good read on the whole.
I would like to thank the author Tom Bale, Bookouture and Net.galley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for giving an honest review.
This was told from 2 halves. This definitely made the book very interesting.
It will keep you on your toes.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!
This book wasted no time getting right into the crux of the story. The middle section of the book felt a little dragged out with not a lot of substance. There was a story but it was hard to try and figure out what was happening, how it was all going to play out/where it was going and how all the players fit together. Towards the end it picked up again but it seemed a little far fetched for what was supposed to be 'real life'. It sucked me in but it didn't keep my attention as much as I would have liked.
What can you say when you are halfway through a book and think that there’s nowhere else this book can take you? It’s a darn good book!
One Dark Night by Tom Bale starts out innocently enough with a family driving home after a weekend excursion. Bad driving and road rage leads to a nightmare for the family of four. They end up locked in a cellar with believe it or not worse to come.
I totally enjoyed this book and will happily recommend it to others. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this advance copy in exchange for my unbiased review. I give this book 5 stars
Driving home from a day out with his wife, Katy and children Adam is infuriated when a car cuts him up and causes some damage to his car. On impulse he decides enough is enough and he's going to confront the driver. Inside on the back seat restrained by two men is a terrified woman who says "these men murdered my husband".
Adam is now in a quandry - he's worried about his family but also feels he can't leave this woman to her fate - whatever that may be..
The gang believe they are a liability and kidnap them.... and what follows is a twisty tale which leaves you guessing and on the edge of your seat! I found some bits more fast paced than others but all in all an enjoyable read.
