I wanted to like this book because I liked that it was in both English and Spanish. But I thought it was a little odd.

The Snow and the Sun was a fun book, it would have been more fun to my children if I could pronounce spanish words a little better. The children enjoyed hearing the folk tale in two languages and the story was beautiful. I would recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book. The colors were very eye catching. I liked the dual translation of the text and how repetitive the sentences were, which would help with comprehension if you or your child is learning Spanish. This is definitely not for a younger audience though because it get very wordy the further along you go.

'The Snow and the Sun/La Nieve y el Sol: A South American Folk Rhyme in Two Languages' by Antonio Frasconi is full of the author's woocuts, which is the reason I liked this book.

The story here is from a textbook from Argentina with translation by the author. The story starts with a simple question about why the snow hurts our feet, and continues to build on a causal list of things that are interrelated. The narrative runs from snow to sun to rat and cat to man and on and on, finally coming back to snow.

Originally published in 1961, I liked the bilingual nature of the text. I really liked the original woodcuts present here in multiple colors.

This was such a fun story. It’s a round robin type of story that builds on itself like the fly swallowing lady. Except no one in this story dies. Instead, the same question is asked over and over “why are you bad”. I like the ladder steps this story takes. They have not been cleaned up, or simplified, and I think this would make a great story time activity. I could see it as a felt or puppet story as well. But I wouldn’t want to take away from the amazing woodblock prints inside either. Anyway it’s used, this is a fun story, and it gets an extra plus for being in dual languages.

This is a progressive poem. Progressive poems are kind of cool and I used to love learning them, as a kid, because they were progressive.

Such as the poem “I know an old lady who swallowed a fly”, “The Old Woman and her pig” or the song of “There’s a hole in the bucket”. Each one follows the other to go on to the next thing that needs to be done.

And this one does it too. It is the story of the snow and why it is so bad. And the snow blames someone else, and someone else blames them.

The pictures are ok. And the story is both in English and Spanish. But the prose seems awkward, and not that exiting to say.

This was a pleasant read, but not one I would rush to return to. The woodcut art does stand out in this day and age, and is nicely coloured. The accompanying text, a poem that builds and builds until it can grow no more, is OK, but not something to read multiple times. The most worthwhile element of the book is that it is in Spanish and English together, and this traditionally-styled verse can educate in a few aspects of vocab. So that's all fine and dandy, but I still think of this as more a borrow than a buy.

What a beautiful story! The Snow And The Sun by Antonio Frasconi is not only beautiful but educational. The story is written in both English and Spanish. A side by side of both languages, quite useful for teaching my young child how to read and speak in Spanish. The consistent viewing of the words and their meanings is great for anyone learning either English and Spanish. The book is rich with words, and with expressing how it all comes full circle in life and nature. A wonderful read.
