BRAT and the Kids of Warriors is a story set in late 1957 and the majority of the book takes place in Germany on an Army base. The kids are all the children of Army officers and they understand the need to make new friends every time their fathers get transferred, even if they hate leaving their old friends. Jack, Queenie and Rabbit are lucky enough to find a group of friends right away, which is a good thing because Jack is faced with a bully and his gang almost immediately. This book deals a lot with bullying, and how the kids band together to fight it. I loved how the friends all had each other's backs, regardless of the danger.

I do have to say that I was very disturbed by the meting out of discipline by the parents of the kids, in particular the fathers. I get that the book is set in 1957 and on an Army base in Germany, and that discipline was different back then, but that didn't make it any less disturbing. That did take away from my ability to really enjoy this book fully. Other than that, though, the book was well written, the kids were realistic, and the setting was described in such detail that it was easy to image yourself there!

All in all, I did enjoy this book very much.

4/5 stars.

Good book, but I just can't seem to get into it right now. There's not really anything I can pinpoint in the book what's making me turn away from it. My only guess is it's just not my cup of tea right now.

This was the best book that I have read this year! This book transports you into the world of the “military brat- child” like no other book can! Three siblings, Laura (Queenie, Jack and Kirsten (Rabbit) are traveling to Germany on the USS Upshur in 1957, and they have adventures that modern kids can only dream about!
The book begins with a spitting contest, the children get to see rare right whales, sneak into the ship’s engine room and walk across a catwalk that straddles a 30 foot drop!
The children get to live on a former Luftwaffe air base, with Nazi artifacts, ferocious bullies and spies! Remember as you read it, that this book takes place in the 1950’s and that discipline is not the same as todays parents dish out.
You will wish that these children and their friends were your friends! Enjoy!
