A nice simple introduction to setting up a sustainable home and acquired lifestyle. Includes some useful recipes and very stylish photography. Perfect for those living away from the family home for the first time or for young newly married couples setting up house together.
What a beautifully illustrated and written book - there are some really good tips to make the home more sustainable and eco friendly, there are also some recipes included in the book - I loved the receipe for making your own cashew milk, as a vegan I am always looking out for new plant based recipes.
I highly recommend this book both for its beautifully pics and also for the ideas contained in it.
thanks to the publisher and to Netgalley for the ARC e copy in return for my honest feedback.
What a beautiful book - the messages (reminders really) are important in our fast-paced world. I'm a big fan of minimalism since I've seen the anxious effect the opposite of minimalism has on me (I know a few hoarders and their homes are nightmare-educing for me), and the suggestions, encouragements of The Sustainable Home make me grateful there are other like-minded folks. The questions the authors pose -- 'Do You Need it? Can You Fix It? Can You Buy Used? -- and recommendations ('It's okay to refuse politely') are ones that I need to keep in mind. Whether you live in an apartment like I do, or a home, the tips/tricks are relevant for everyone who is concerned about the environment and living peacefully. From building instructions, to plant care, to sustainable food tips (OMG 'Make Your Own: Food from Food Scraps!), this book is a resource I'm going to refer to time and again, as well as give as presents to friends that would appreciate the book just as much as I do.
This book is aimed at people who want to be more environmentally friendly in their behavior but don't know where to start. It's basically a collection of suggestions about simple ways to reduce how much waste you produce, minimize what you buy, and support more sustainable practices. The author went through the main rooms in a house plus briefly discussed work and eating out. She talked about things like buying food at a farmer's market, using natural light when you can, unplugging electronics when you aren't using them, growing house plants or a garden, recycling, buying used, and composting. I had expected more DIY projects from the book description, but there were only a few recipes and DIY instructions. While a decent book if you're new to this and don't want to be overwhelmed, it was much too basic for me. I've been doing most of her suggestions for years.
This is a good book with useful everyday ideas and tips to make our houses more eco-friendly, from shopping to dressing and cleaning.
Thanks NetGalley for my ARC of this book.
My review has been posted to my blog & Goodreads.
Review has also been tweeted as usual.
Thank you! :c)
A book full of many useful and interesting tips and project on how to live eco-friendly.
I really appreciated them and hope to be able to try some of them soon.
Recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC
"The Sustainable Home" is a compilation of many sustainability tips across many areas of hearth and home. In addition to tips for making changes in your home and routine to encourage sustainability, there are several recipes for "making your own" products for use throughout your home. Overall, it didn't feel like there was anything that was a big, new tip that isn't available elsewhere. The recipes included are things that are often shared as some easy switches to be made. Having already made several sustainable switches, I was looking forward to picking up some new recipes but didn't really find anything that I can't wait to give a try.
Free eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is available on October 16th.
'The Sustainable Home' is a great book or rather a manual on how to start your zero waste life. It gives you the introduction to environmental issues together with some very important facts, but also it's full of ideas to use in every day life. The book consists of many step by step tutorials starting from how to regrow your food to how to build your own furniture that will last a lifetime. I can genuinely recommend it to everyone who wants to live ecofriendly life. Five stars from me!
This book really appealed to me because I am really interested in living sustainably and had already implemented a number of recommendations from this book into my life (using beeswax wraps).
I feel like this book, although interesting, didnt tell me anything I didn't already know. The recipes and how tos were interesting but a little bit of a faff. I definately won't be making my own cashew milk at home, what normal person has got time for that!
I'm not sure why this book is necessary at this point - most of the "tips" and information included in it are pretty common knowledge (switch out your incandescent bulbs! bring reusable shopping bags! reduce, reuse, recycle!). I mean, obviously this is important, and there were a few "newish" ideas (like sustainable cleaning products, meat-free or meat-reduced diets, etc.), but overall I feel like this ground has been covered ad nauseum for the past decade at least. Perhaps having an index of resources and/or more in-depth information in each section would make this book more useful?
I definitely recommed this book, as it gives so many useful tips how to live more eco-friendly. I'm sure that there are a lot of people who would want to do something good for the environment and don't know what - this book gives them lots of ideas what to do, providing them with DIYs, recipes and recommendations. I am sure that I am going to try many of the things described, making my home and my lifestyle more sustainable.
