K.L. Slater is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. Her books are pretty much unputdownable and always end in a very twisty turny way. Closer was no exception - awesome!

A Great Read!!!!!

Maisie is 10 years old and takes ballet lessons. Her mom, Emma, and dad, Shaun, are having a few marital concerns. The arrangement is that the two live together like siblings/friends instead of a messy divorce. Of course it will be the best for Maisie..

Having been severely paranoid in the past, Emma still stings when maybe should not be. She feels that Shaun is seeing someone else. Although his workload is lighter than Emma's, Shaun has been skipping out on a number of duties, lately. Eventually, Shaun admits that he is seeing Joanne Dent - one of Emma's bosses. Nice!

Maisie already has the idea that things are changing between her mom and dad. She is deeply concerned. Also, Maisie HATES Piper Dent (who takes ballet lessons with Maisie) - Joanne's 10 year old daughter. And as time passes she is forced to spend time with them in order to be with her dad.

Three years ago, Emma had a breakdown due to her last job. A man that had changed legal papers committed suicide - it was Emma who blew the whistle. Will it happen again with Joanne? Maisie really doesn't like Joanne, any more than she likes Piper. Then, Maisie begins to lose weight - she refuses to eat having been teased about her size. After weeks of dropping pounds, Emma takes Maisie to the doctor who blows it off as pre-teen angst. But food is found hidden in Maisie's she is getting bony bedroom and none of that is normal...

Shaun thinks that Emma is exaggerating everything. He and Joanne are in LOVE. Emma finds out that Joanne's husband and stepdaughter died in a boating accident and that Joanne was under suspicion for a long time following that. Now Emma is afraid for her daughter. She takes off to get her at ballet lessons; Joanne's car is there...

You will never believe what happens next...

Many thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a thrilling read!

KL Slater is one of my favourite authors and am glad to say she's done it again - Closer is an excellent psychological thriller that I devoured in just a few hours. I simply couldn't put my Kindle down!
The characters I found quite unlikable, they made me feel uneasy and I wasn't sure who to trust but I quite like that about a book. I like the little mind games KL Slater likes to play with her readers. Also, the subject of eating disorders features heavily in the book and that can make it a really upsetting read at times. It is emotional but it is also fast paced and a proper 'mess with your brain' type of book. There are two twists in the end and I could sort of predict only one of them. Again, Slater is great at surprising and shocking the reader. I am already looking forward to the next book because I simply cannot fault Slater's work.

Whenever I hear K L Slater has a new book out, I get excited as she always writes amazing books.
Shaun and Emma are splitting up but living in the family home for the sake of their daughter. That is until he falls for Emma’s boss Jenny, Shaun then moves in very quickly with Jenny and her daughter Piper. Piper is the same age as Emma and Shaun’s daughter, Maisie. Things start going downhill for Emma and Maisie, in more ways than one. There are so many twists and turns throughout this story, which make it unputdownable. This is a gripping psychological thriller which had me on the edge of my seat. I would highly recommend this book.

This book is full of twists and turns and I just love the way this author writes and wow what a fantastic ending, made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Can definitely recommend this book and I eagerly await Kim's next masterpiece, well done.

I read this book in just over a day and if real life hadn't kept interfering i think I would have read it in one sitting I enjoyed it that much !! Told in different character perspectives it made the book both compulsive and a real page turner and more so due to some of the most dislikable characters ever (always makes for a good read when I dislike characters !). So if you want an excellent read by a brilliant author then this one surely fits the bill its a 4+ star read .. My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture foe a chance to read read the ARC I loved it .

A psychological thriller with a deviously-twisted ending! I’m a new Slater fan!

Emma is a paralegal with a new and demanding job. She’s excited to put in the extra hours, as long as her husband—Shaun—is willing to help her out at home. Emma has no doubts that Shaun loves their daughter—Maisie—but he’s never been very helpful with her care or the household chores.

Although they’ve decided to end their relationship as a married couple, they are trying an unconventional living situation...for Maisie’s sake. They’re living in the same house—in different bedrooms—and sharing parenting time and household chores. For Maisie’s benefit, they’ve even set aside a family day. It’s actually been working out well for Emma. Shaun has been spending more time with Maisie than he did when they were a couple, and doing his share of the household chores, which gives Emma time to devote to her career.

Just when Emma thinks this situation will work, Shaun becomes involved with another woman...but it’s not just any woman—it’s her bloody boss—Joanne!

“The twist is, my relationships with both Joanne and Shaun are key to my life. They both have a massive influence and I can’t afford to get on the wrong side of either of them. In other words, I’m between a rock and a hard place and I have no choice but to make the best of the situation.”

Five years ago, Joanne made a pact with herself. She wouldn’t begin a new relationship for at least ten years.

“Ten years was long enough to build a successful career, meaning she and her daughter would be financially secure. It was a work in progress, but she had every confidence her ten-year plan would soon be completed satisfactorily. It was a small price to pay to finally feel free. A small price to stop anyone who might be out to dig up dirt.”

Then Shaun came along, and the attraction was so strong she couldn’t help herself...even though he was married to one of her employees...and her ten-year plan wasn’t complete yet. Within weeks, the relationship was serious and Shaun moved in.

“She’d only felt attraction like this once before, and she was still in the process of trying to erase the devastating consequences of it from her life.”

Shaun was excited about his new life with Joanne and her daughter—Piper. Emma wasn’t as optimistic. She’s noticed changes in Maisie, and attributes it to Shaun’s new life and family. Maisie and Piper know each from dance class, but have never been friends. Piper is a spoiled diva, who is used to getting her way and being the center of attention. Maisie has become an outsider in her dad’s new family and it’s taking a toll on her.

Emma seems to be the only one taking Maisie’s issues seriously. She needs to figure out how to handle the situation, but she needs to think it through and be cautious...more cautious than last time.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC, in exchange for my honest review!

(May contain spoilers) I've read books by this author before and they have never disappointed me. Closer was a brilliant,, fast-paced, mind-boggling, entertaining and heart wrenching read. Reading about the spilt between Emma and her husband, Shaun, triggered unhappy emotions for me since I have dealt with a separation and pending divorce (minus the daughter). Shaun was a real life butthole, honestly. I mean, how could he have the audacity to not only leave his wife and 10 year old daughter, Maisie, but establish a new, readily made "family" with his wife's boss, Joanne, and her 10 year old daughter, Piper. That scenario really burned me up inside. He was a highly selfish character, and Joanne wasn't any better. I really despised the way Joanne and Piper treated Maisie and the fact that since they were belittling her so badly that she ended up being anorexic hurt something terribly. The description of pain that Maisie endures becomes a real tear-jerker, so be prepared to feel every emotion that the young girl goes through. The ending wasn't one that I was expecting, but I definitely can see how it ties into the beginning of the story. There's also a twist within the story involving Maisie and another character that will blow your mind. Revenge is the essence of this story. All in all, this book was a solid 4.5. Thank you for the chance to review it.

Closer by K L Slater is a psychological thriller that keeps you guessing and I didn't predict the ending. This book had me hooked and I read it in one day. Plenty of red herrings and unlikeable characters to keep me reading.
Emma and her husband have agreed to an amicable split but that was before Emma found out that he has a new girlfriend who just happens to be Emma's boss. Emma's ten year old daughter Maisie is stuck in the middle of all this and it's taking is toll on her.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

Ive said before there are certain authors who you are guaranteed a ‘good tale’ when you pick their book and K.L.Slater is one of those authors!
Effortless psychological drama once again shouts out from the pages and you are quickly immersed in an exciting and unpredictable story
This time Emma is losing her husband Shaun to another woman....Joanne......Joanne is Emma’s boss!....thats enough to build a good story on! Piper is Joanne’s daughter, spoilt rotten and nasty....But then theres Emma and Shauns daughter,Maisie, Maisie is a happy go lucky child until she is told she is fat and she stops eating...the story then plunges the reader into the world of anorexia and what it can do to a child...but who is telling Maisie she is fat, and why?
Joanne has secrets, Emma has secrets, they all have secrets, some worse than others but all ‘coming to the boil’ as the story hurtles towards its horrifying end, twice, just as the story is solved and your settling back after the shock it happens again, another ending and shock
SUPERB and this book continues to prove the authors rightful place as one of the best psychological writers in a very busy genre
I try not to say a book had me hooked from the first till the last page but Ive said it anyway as its true!
10/10 5 stars

The story flicks between alternating characters, mainly from Emma's point of view but also some from Joanne, Emma's boss, and her daughter Maisie.

Emma, without a doubt I was on her side right from the start. Shaun I thought was a weak excuse of a man and it riled me up that he couldn't see what is happening to his daughter before his very eyes. Of all the people to also fall in love with, I had every sympathy for Emma having to try and deal with her boss being her ex's new partner. Especially as Joanne is yet another unlikable character and don't get me started on her spoilt brat of a kid, Piper!

There are definitely a couple of highly unlikable characters in this story which really made my blood boil. Maisie though is one who my heart broke for. We first meet her as a happy go lucky child with no worries to having the weight of the world on her shoulders. As with most children though, they don't want to talk to their parents and bottle it up inside. It was killing me seeing it eating away at her and also the physical and mental affect it was having.

Closer is truly gripping read that had me going through an array of emotions. I felt like I was ready to take on Rocky by the end of the book, as some of the characters really get under your skin, which shows what a great writer the author is to have that affect on their reader. From picking the book up, I knew I wasn't going anywhere until I had finished it and I didn't. I had to know how it was all going to conclude and boy that ending! I am still reeling the day after finishing the book. A gut clencher of a read that will leave you gasping.

How on earth does K L Slater keep turning out these fantastic books , they are all gripping and real page turners but all different . Closer was probably her best one yet for me . When Emma's husband moves in with her boss it leads to Emma becoming increasingly paranoid about the effect this has on her daughter Maisie . Emma knows someone is upsetting her but has no evidence that it is Joanne and her daughter Piper .
Emma's paranoia gets worse as the book progresses and everyone ends up worrying that Emma is going to have a break down . Great twist as we have come to expect , although this time I was pretty proud of myself as I had guessed . The only slight negative for me was that the end felt a tiny bit hurried , still a 5 star read though . Thank you !!!
