Emma and her husband, Shaun, have arrived at that point where they are living together only for the sake of their daughter, Maisie. They share the household chores and Maisie’s care. But when Shaun falls in love with Emma’s boss, Joanne, and moves in with her, all that changes. Joanne promises to love Maisie as her own, but something is not right….
Closer is certainly one of the most gripping psychological thrillers I’ve read this year. I finished the book in one day, reading late into the night, and was rewarded by the absolute stunner of an ending. Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

Another great read by this author! Took this on holiday - read it in a day!
Emma and Shaun are living in the same house for the sake of their daughter Maisie. When Shaun falls for Emma’s boss Jo and announces he is moving in with her and her daughter Piper, Maisie changes, she stops eating , stops going to her dance classes and stops smiling! Is it just the upheaval or is there something more sinister happening?
Found it difficult to put down!
Had a couple of twists which by the end made me so anxious about the fate of poor Maisie I was quite disturbed!
Heartily recommend!

Emma and Shaun’s marriage is over but for the sake of their daughter Maisie they still live together thinking this is the perfect solution to their marriage problems. It all seems to be going well until Shaun meets and falls in love with Joanne Dent, who also happens to be Emma’s boss. Joanne’s daughter Piper is the same age as Maisie so Shaun thinks it will be happy ever after and Maisie will fit in perfectly with his new girlfriend and her daughter. Emma has other ideas when she starts to notice big changes in her daughter.

I’ve read quite a few of K.L. Slaters books, unfortunately this one isn’t one of my faves. I finished it but it took a bit of doing. I especially found the first half a bit slow and tedious with not a lot happening. For me the twist at the end fell a bit flat.

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy of Closer by K L Slater. I have read most of her books so I was excited to receive this one.
Emma and Shaun are legally married but, they live separate lives but for the sake of their daughter Maisie. They live together in the house. Emma is a Paralegal Secretary and Shaun is a photographer. When suddenly Shaun starts missing picking up Maisie and career woman Emma has to drop everything to pick up her daughter. Shaun announces that he has met someone after a short romance and he is moving in with her and she has a daughter. Emma finds it hard, but when she finds out who the woman is, she is shocked as it turns out to be her boss Joanne.
Shaun wants Maisie to get to know Joanne so he takes her out on day trips with her and her daughter Piper. Each time Maisie comes home Emma notices Maisie getting withdrawn and not eating. Shaun thinks there is nothing wrong with Maisie but Emma tells Shaun she knows when there is something not right about her daughter and she is not ok.
I really like K.L. Slater books there are gripping with lots of twists and turns. But this one was quite different to what she normally writes and I found it quite slow. Good twist and the end though. I didn’t see it coming

Only my second book by this author and yes, I know shame on me! But from now on, I won't let any of her stories slip through my fingers again.

Did I like the book? No. Did I love the book? No. Did I adore the book? YESSSSS!

It was one of those books that had that hand coming out of it on the first page to drag you in and not ready to release you until the last full stop. Who needs food or sleep when immersed in this kind of reading material?

This time I was sure I had figured out who was to blame. Yeah, right (insert sarcasm).

The author has a writing style I really like and she knows how to make you believe you know it all when in fact you know nothing. I loved it!! 5 stars don't seem to be enough.

Thank you, K.L. Slater, Bookouture and Netgalley.

I didnt fall in love with this book- neither did I hate it.

But for me it dragged far too much in the beginning and it was a struggle to get to the half way point as it felt like there was very little storyline.

And I had a feeling who the perpetrator was from the beginning- even if the writer got her name wrong at the end of the book!!

This book does pick up in the second half- if you can manage to stick with it.

For me it was a 2.5 star read

I received a free e-copy of Closer by K.L. Slater from NetGalley for my honest review.

Emma and Shaun have decided that their marriage is over. They decide that they are going to live in the same house to raise their ten year old daughter, Maisie. Shaun ends up having a relationship with Emma's boss, Joanne, who also has a ten year old daughter named Piper. Piper is a spoiled and not very nice little girl.

Maisie is a happy go lucky child until she starts getting bullied about her weight. Maisie's behavior starts changing drastically along with the fact that she stops eating. Emma knows something is going on with Maisie but Maisie won't talk to her or anyone about it. Is it Piper who is bullying Maisie?

This book will keep you turning the pages through the night. Wonderfully twisted psychological thriller that had my emotions all over the place

OMG THIS BOOK IS AMAZING.
I was hooked from the first page, I devoured this book. The tension was palpable and chilling.
I read this book sat on the edge of my chair. This is writing at its best, the secrets revealed were mind blowing and the climax was explosive. I did not want this book to end.
When reading this book take my advice and turn off the tv, switch off your phone and let this author take you on a rollercoaster of a ride.
An excellent psychological thriller with a touch of domestic noir. One of the best books I have read this year.
This author is now one of my favourites and I have already downloaded the rest of her books.
HAPPY READING 😊😊😊😊😊
I would like to thank the author KL Slater, Bookouture and Net.galley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for giving an honest review.

Thank you to Bookouture for an early copy of Closer by K.L. Slater. I wouldn’t call this so much a psychological novel but a woman’s fiction. It was good, kept my interest, the ending was a bit confusing and shocking. The characters felt very real and showed what a mother will do when her daughter is in trouble. Good read.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this book. Closer By K.L Slater is quite a slow book throughout but it will keep you guessing. An unconventional marriage split between a couple who have a little girl and a new girlfriend who also has a little girl. A lot of nasty characters added in. I kind of guessed the culprit towards the end but I certainly didn't foresee the ending!

Closer by KL Slater is a slow burn of a story but one that had me hooked and confused. The ending was both a surprise and a shock. There are some nasty characters in this story that is for sure. If you have every read any of this authors books then you will know that you need to read this book!

Emma and Shaun are still legally married but no longer together. They are staying in their home together for the sake of their 10 year old daughter Masie. But then Shaun meets Joanne - who is also Emma's boss - and they start dating. Masie does not like Joanne or her 10 year old daughter who bully her and make her feel fat. It keeps getting worse and her father Shaun refuses to believe it. Joanne and Emma are both hiding dark secrets.

Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.

Twists and turns aplenty here! Interesting plot and characters, good succinct writing. Alternating narrators gave dimension to the characters, some (most) highly unlikable. Hard to say much without giving anything away... The ending was chilling! Well played. Would recommend and read more by this author.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and Bookouture for a copy in exchange for a review.

Absolutely loved this one - my only "issue" was that all the other things I needed to do got in the way of finishing it in one sitting. Oh well - guess there's something to be said for anticipation making me wait.

Chapters switch back and forth among several characters, such as Emma, a paralegal with a talented 10-year-old daughter Maisie; Maisie herself; Emma's mum Val; and Joanne, an attorney and Emma's boss who's also the mother of 10-year-old Piper (the latter a selfish, nasty bully who simply doesn't understand the word "no" - probably because the little twit has never heard it).

Each character has some sort of past secret, as slowly revealed in the chapters. At issue in the beginning, though, is that Emma and her husband Shaun have given up on their marriage. They've come to an amicable exchange of responsibilities when it comes to Maisie, and they still live in their home (albeit in separate rooms). That worked fine until Shaun found the love of his new life - and whoops, it turns out to be Joanne.

The three adults seem to be dealing with the somewhat uncomfortable situation fairly well, but Maisie is particularly disturbed. Not only does she not understand what's really going on with her parents, she absolutely detests Piper; they go to the same dance classes where, needless to say, Piper is an prima donna extraordinaire. Then her dad moved in with Joanne, forcing Maisie into much more contact with Piper than she ever wants (honestly, I can't blame the kid; Piper is a totally obnoxious brat who could use a few good smacks upside the head). But every time Maisie tries to tell her dad or, God forbid, Piper's mum about the awful things Piper says and does, they defend Piper and tell Maisie to try harder.

Emma's mum does realize her daughter's discomfort - manifested both in personality and behavioral changes - but Maisie retreats within herself and won't open up to anyone. And Emma's attempts to warn Shaun that Piper (and perhaps Joanne) are putting Maisie in danger fall on eyes and ears that are blinded and deafened by his newfound one true love. So, Emma decides to do some digging for herself; but as she embarks on that journey, events of her past begin to haunt her, threatening a danger of a different sort.

Everything comes to a head near the end, with more than one major surprise and a cliffhanger ending that will curl your mustache even if you don't have one. Kudos to the author, and thanks to the publisher, via NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy. Whew!

This is truly a psychological thriller which literally keeps you reading to the very end. And what an end it is! I just finished the book and again I was totally bowled over by the ending. You would think that after a while I would get used to never guessing the ending but it keeps coming up from the left field.

Closer by K L Slater is the first book I have read by this author but definitely won’t be the last. I must admit that after I finished it I went back to reread some of the parts to make them jive with the unexpected ending. I still don’t think that I would ever have figured out the ending but must admit that I still have no idea why the book is called Closer.

One of the best things about this book is that it is for the most part totally relatable and I could definitely identify with Emma and Maisie and unfortunately also with Shaun who is a typical self absorbed man.

I happily recommend this book to everyone and thank Bookouture and NetGalley for letting me read this advance copy in exchange for my unbiased review. I give the book 5 stars and look forward to future books.

A Slow Burn with a Fiery Finish!

Emma knows that there is something wrong with her ten year daughter Maisie. If only her estranged husband Shawn, would listen! Unfortunately, he is too busy with his new girlfriend (and Emma’s boss) Joanne, to pay any attention. Sadly, it is their daughter Maisie who suffers. Maisie has become angst ridden, withdrawn and suffers from rapid weight loss.

Emma thinks Joanne and her daughter Piper are to blame. Maisie despises Piper and thinks she is a spoiled little brat. Shawn of course, thinks Piper and Joanne walk on water. Instead, he believes that there is something wrong with Emma. She’s anxious, fidgety and unable to sleep. Even her work is slipping (at least according to Joanne). Could it be? Is Emma the one with the problem? The one whose imagining everything?

Life turns on a dime doesn’t? One minute two people are madly in love and then next, he’s dating your boss. Ha, gotta love it! (I’m sure glad this didn’t happen to me, Gulp!). Only K.L. Slater could spin this in such an entertaining way!

“Closer” starts off building slowly, with the characters’ story gaining momentum with each chapter. Soon I was swiping my kindle as if my own life depended on it! K.L. Slater knows how to grab a reader’s attention and she sure got mine. When I got to the end, my eyes just about popped! This was one fun thriller that I recommend for those who like easy, enjoyable reads.

This was yet another fun-filled buddy read with Kaceey!

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and K.L. Slater for a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Published on NetGalley and Goodreads on 10.10.18.

A good read, the plot draws you in and slower more detail is revealed about the significant events in the character’s lives. Some of it was a little predictable but still a recommended read.

Ending a marriage is never easy when you have a child. It’s especially difficult for Emma Barton because her soon-to-be ex-husband Shaun is seeing another woman, Joanne Dent—who is not only Emma’s boss, but also the mother of a girl that Emma’s daughter strongly dislikes. Adjusting to her parents split is difficult for Maisie, but Emma begins to see signs that something more is going on with her little girl… something she refuses to talk about. As Maisie withdraws from everyone and everything she loves, Emma is convinced it has everything to do with Joanne and her obnoxious daughter Piper—and she has to prove it before something terrible happens to her little girl.

Closer is EXACTLY the sort of psychological thriller I love: suspenseful, unpredictable, with an explosive ending that will knock your socks off. The mystery surrounding the changes in Maisie kept me in a constant state of dread. What was the matter? Was someone hurting her, and if so… who? Her sadness and hidden inner turmoil just broke my heart. It made me want to leap into the book and comfort her, so it was very easy for me to feel the way Emma felt as she tried to uncover Maisie’s secret. Emma’s bewilderment over Maisie’s behavior and the fierce need she had to protect her daughter was as real to me as if I were going through it myself.

Slater’s writing was impeccable, as always, and that ending… WOW. It was absolutely brilliant! I reread those final passages over and over again, to make sure I understood it properly, and it never failed to blow me away. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget that final twist!

If you’re looking for a book that will keep you so mesmerized that you won’t be able to put down until you’ve read every last word, this is the book for you!

I'm a big fan of K.L. Slater's psychological thrillers and I've read every single one published so far. Of course I'm always stoked when I find out a new book is about to come out, and my reaction to Closer was no different... I've been excited to start reading this one ever since I was granted a copy. Closer once again shows us just now good of a psychological thriller writer she is. The writing style is spot on and makes you fly through it! I literally finished it in less than a day... It was just THAT good. While I do think it wasn't my favorite and there were a few things that didn't completely convince me, overall this was yet another solid, well written and thrilling read. Why not five stars? I think it has a lot to do with the predictability of the plot; sadly I was able to see the final twist coming from a mile away, or at least a big part of it. I guess I wished I would have been wrong about it all, but in the end my instincts were right. The ending was also quite abrupt to me, and I would have liked to see a more elaborated one. I'm still on the fence about the characters as well. BUT. The writing is excellent, the suspense well crafted and it brings attention to two very important topics (eating disorder and bullying). I enjoyed my time with Closer, was invested enough to really experience some of the nail biting and frustrating moments and it's always a great sign if you are emotionally invested in a story right? If you enjoy reading well written psychological thrillers, I can definitely suggest adding Closer to your wishlist.

Closer is yet another solid psychological thriller I've read by K.L. Slater, and has only reconfirmed to me I will always have my eyes out for any of her feature reads. While not perfect, since I guessed part of the final reveals early on and found the ending a bit abrupt, the plot is still well crafted and the creation of the suspense is spot on. I always have a great time with her books, and Closer is no different. I really appreciated the discussion of eating disorder and bullying as well, since it's something that cannot get enough attention. If you are a fan of the genre, I can highly recommend all of her books.
