K. L. Slater never disappoints! Emma and Shaun agree their marriage is over but will live in the same house to provide stability for Maisie, their 10 year old daughter.. Shaun then becomes involved with Emma's boss who also has a 10 year old daughter. Piper is a spoiled brat. Maisie is bullied and her personality changes drastically. I wanted to smack Shaun very hard. An excellent book with a very believable story. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.

K.L. Slater has written another fantastic novel.

Emma and Shaun have decided to put an atypical end to their marriage for the sake of their daughter, Maise. The arrangement is supposed to help all three of them transition the split and allow Maise more time with each parent. However, Shaun moves on fairly quickly, engaging in a relationship with Emma’s boss, Joanne. Things go from bad to worse when Shaun reveals that he will be moving in with Joanne and her daughter, Piper, who is a nemesis of his own daughter. Maise begins to spiral in the face of all that is happening. When Emma begins to question if there is more than situational stress behind Maise’s issues, no one will listen to her. But everyone has secrets and Emma is determined that Joanne is hiding something much bigger than she is letting on.

While my initial response was that the story was moving slow, in retrospect I can appreciate the detail. This is not a fast-paced mystery, thriller. This book takes its time to really mess with your mind. I have high recommendations for this as a book club read. 4 stars

Thanks to #NetGalley for this ARC of #Closer

I have read all of K L Slater’s previous novels and they are brilliant, including this one, ‘Closer.

The one thing I find the most amazing is the author’s ability to leave the ending as she does. I am a sucker for a ‘different’ ending. This one is exceptional and I was smiling at what could happen next even after the end.

Emma and Shaun are married with a daughter, Maisie, and although they have decided their marriage is over they have come up with an arrangement to help all three of them, including their daughter, deal with the breakup. However, Shaun moves on quickly by having a relationship with Emma’s boss, Joanne Dent. Clearly this is difficult for all parties to deal with.

There are ghosts in the past for everyone concerned and these are continuously referred to as the storyline progresses. It isn’t until towards the end of the novel that the issues about the past become clear and even then there is doubt about who is right and who is wrong.

A brilliant read and highly recommended. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and KL Slater for the ARC in return for my honest review.

Love that ending.

You know you need to set aside a day with no interruptions when you begin a KL Slater book cos you just don’t want to put it down and Closer was no different, fast paced gripping psychological thriller and as always a great build up to many twists and a complete bombshell at the end, still wondering what will happen for the future with Maisie and Shaun!!! Can’t go into detail of this book as would give too much away but you’re in for a treat!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Fantastic read from start to finish. Very fast paced. Well written and keeps you guessing throughout. Twists and turns and a huge bombshell dropped on you at the end leaves you gasping

A gripping read that kept me hooked and in suspense from start to finish.

Told from different character perspectives ( some you will like and some you will not ) it kept me page turning and wanting to know "What happens next" all the way through and I certainly didn't see the twist at the end coming.

A great read I really enjoyed.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

# Closer # NetGalley #

I was provided an advance copy from NetGalley for a fair and honest review. Thank you NetGalley.

K. L Slater is one of my favorite authors. She always leaves you wanting more and this one is no different. I didn’t want it to end as I wanted to know further what happened to the characters. Her psychological thrillers are some of the best and I am working my way through reading them all. That’s how good they are. I thought I had the Closer all figured out, but found at the end I totally did not. I love a good suspense novel with characters who you love to hate. I thoroughly recommend this novel if you love a book that will hold your attention to the end. A solid 5 stars.

This is my second K.L.Slater book that I have read. This is one was better than her last book.
What I liked was there was a range of suspense, twist and not knowing where this story was going next.
Thank you to both NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

I loved this book! The story is told from various viewpoints, including Emma (in the main), Joanne, Val (Emma’s Mum) and Maisie. We’re taken through the break-up of Emma and Shaun, the discovery that he is seeing someone new and him moving in with Joanne. Then we get to learn about how they try to ‘integrate’ the two new families and about Maisie’s thoughts on her ‘new family’.

The story is exciting and unpredictable with a good few twists that are completely unexpected…….firstly – who is Joanne?! (I’m not giving anything away!). BUT……the twist at the end! It is truly unexpected! I thought I’d sussed things out about three quarters of the way through the book, but was then shocked to find out I was wrong!

This is written really well, and really made me ‘feel’ with the characters. I could feel Emma’s frustration, anger and sadness and was frustrated for her. Learning who Joanne is; who it is that Shaun has fallen in love with made me sympathise with Emma and want to give her a big hug! More importantly were the feelings of Maisie. Having young nieces and nephews, it really made me worry about her and her feelings. It really drew me in to the story and made me feel quite helpless.

There is quite an abrupt end to the book and I found that I still had a number of questions that hadn’t been answered. I’m sure the outstanding questions is a sign of a great thriller but it did leave me slightly frustrated. I really want to know what happens next, and to learn a little more about one of the characters (I can’t say who as don’t want to give anything away!).

Overall this is a fantastic read which you won’t want to put down. The characters and twists will keep you involved and the ending will have you in shock!

Very predictive and not at all original.

I generally really quite like the books K. L. Slater writes so I was eager to get into this one.

Emma is literally one of the worst parents I have ever read about. She knows something is wrong with her child but she does nothing to help said child or figure out what is wrong.
I figured out the main culprit very early on in the book, and the whole reason for everything that happened was stupid and riding on a lot of coincidence.

The little twist at the end was annoying and served absolutely no purpose. I really expected better from this author and from this book.

I was very much looking forward to reading this book because this author has written so many excellent and exciting thrillers. I thought this was a really good psychological thriller with an ending I didn't see coming and enjoyed immensely. Highly recommend!

Emma and husband Shaun have agreed their relationship is over, but they’re going to remain nominally together for the sake of daughter Maisie. It’s working for them - at least until Emma’s boss Joanne and her daughter Piper come on the scene, at which point things get a whole lot more unpleasant. I really felt for both Emma and Maisie as things spiral rapidly out of control: Emma’s confusion and anxiety about what appears to be befalling her daughter were very relatable.

Closer was undeniably a gripping read, however the “twist” became, I thought, predictable after a while. I was sure I had guessed it (I had) and would have been amazed if the story hadn’t gone that way. Also I really, really hated the end which was both overly abrupt and left me with a bit of a nasty taste in my mouth, to be honest... After everything the characters had gone through, you’re really going to end it like that?

Closer by K L Slater is a gripping psychological book that keeps you guessing all the way to the end. From the very first chapter, it had me gripped, I wanted to know more. The flow of the book was easy to grasp and the chapters weren’t too long either (which I love as I always say, “just another one”).

Emma and her husband have parted ways, Emma wants the best for her daughter, she wants routine for her work life and for her daughter. But it doesn’t last long as Emma finds out that Shaun (her husband) is in a new relationship with Emma’s boss.
But they all have secrets that they all want to forget and keep buried.

Closer is truly gripping, and it will most definitely leave you on the edge of your seat. Amazing work by Kim Slater, 10/10 5*.
Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book.

Closer is a psychological thriller that will have you guessing from start to finish. To be honest, I had sort of a hard time getting into it at first and almost discarded it but something peeked my interest so I kept reading and boy am I glad!!

Here's a synopsis:
Shaun and Emma have agreed to split up. Now, Shaun has a new woman in his life. Joanne Dent. She's also Emma's boss. When their daughter Maisie starts spending time with her dad and his new "family", Emma soon notices a change in Maisie's attitude. She shuts herself from the world and looses weight fast. Emma knows Joanne is not who she says she is but nobody will listen to her. She has to find out what's going on before it's too late for Maisie.

The story flicks between characters, mainly from Emma's point of view, to her daughter Maisie and Emma's boss Joanne. From the start and all the way through the book, I was on Emma's side. Like her, I would go to all lengths to protect my kids and make sure they are happy and living at their full potential. I was getting so irritated by Shaun's dismissive attitude when Emma expressed concerns about their daughter, Maisie. I wanted to shake him so he would wake up and realise his daughter was in distress. As for Joanne, I thought she was straight up evil. The worst stepmother to Maisie. Making her feel so self conscious about her weight and making it known her own daughter, Piper was perfect in every way. As for Maisie, my heart broke for her. This 10 year old little girl had to not only deal with her parents splitting up, she was shoveled right and left between her mom and her dad with his new "family".

Closer was a truly gripping read that makes the reader feel all sorts of emotions. Some characters truly got under my skin. The author did a phenomenal job in keeping the reader on the edge of their seat until the very end, which I didn't see coming at all!

Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and K. L. Slater for my electronic copy in exchange for an honest review.

When you start to read a KL Slater book you just know it is going to be good and I think this must be her best one yet. Gripping from the very beginning and an ending that I did not see coming. What a twist !!!! Highly recommended . I am eagerly awaiting the next book from this talented author

With the phrase 'the most gripping psychological thriller you’ll read this year ", I had high expectations for this book and unfortunately I was disappointed. I wanted to love this book, to have it suck me in and keep me up reading, but that wasn't the case. There were a few chapters that didn't seem relevant and I didn't understand how it fit into the overall plot of the book. The last few chapters were the most "thrilling" as all the answers came to light and came full circle to the opening chapter.

This is a good page turner told from various character perspectives, it tells the tale of a couple who, although splitting up, continue to share the marital home. Their daughter, Maisie, senses the friction and then her father falls for the mother of a girl that she doesn't like, causing Maisie to suffer and we feel that pain throughout the book.

It's got twists and turns aplenty and it's a really good read. My gripe with it was how unlikeable the characters are (excepting Maisie) and at times it felt like it was plodding, but, overall I enjoyed it. A solid 3* read.

Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the author for the opportunity to preview this really good read.

Still a good read overall.

A psychological thriller with a nice twisty ending! K. L. Slater fan!

Closer kept me guessing and had me hooked. There are some characters you will hate, yes hate, but that makes it all the more interesting. Joanne and Piper, need I say more ? The story alternates characters, mainly from Emma's point of view but also Joanne, her daughter Maisie and her mother Val. I prefer only hearing from one or two characters at the most but it did not take away from the story.

Emma and her husband Shaun lead an interesting "roommate" style life until he surprises her with the fact that he's been seeing someone else, Emma's own boss! Not only does Emma now have to deal with her boss being her husband's new lover but she also has to deal with her 10 year old daughter Piper who just so happens to be mean to Maisie, Shaun and Emma's daughter. "Closer" touched on bullying, anorexia, depression and had me feeling so much for Maisie. AND that ending?!?!?! YES!!! Nailed it! I thoroughly enjoyed this and cannot wait to see what the author comes up with next!

A huge thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for allowing me an advanced copy of this book!!!

I know my daughter better than I know myself and if there’s one thing I know for sure at this moment: it's that Maisie is not ok.

My ex-husband Shaun and I are still friends.
We would do anything for our beautiful little girl, Maisie.

But now Shaun has moved in with Joanne and suddenly, Maisie has a brand new family.
And there’s something not quite right about it…I know Joanne isn’t everything she says she is. Yet no-one will listen.

I need to discover what she’s hiding.
Because if I don’t, my daughter will be in terrible danger.

For some reason, this book automatically reminded me of a Liane Moriarty copy cat which left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. It felt forced.

I liked the story concept and the overall plot structure of the book.

K.L Slater does a great job holding the audience with her thriller and keeping readers engaged. I never felt like this book was slow, which is a positive thing.

People will definitely enjoy this book. It will be successful on shelves and captivate audiences, particularly women, to read this.

I recommend this book for anyone looking for the next juicy thriller.
