Each short story was too far removed from the other to be cohesive enough for me. Shame as I really liked the premise.
“A Thousand Doors” is an anthology edited by J.T. Ellison , but it is unlike other anthologies one might have read. This one, of course, features stories by renowned suspense and thriller authors, however, “A Thousand Doors” features one woman, Mia, and many tell her story. These prominent authors all add a unique flavor to Mia’s narrative, creating an exceptional, inventive, and cohesive anthology.
Anthologies are formulated for reading on the go since a reader can complete one whole story in a short period. “A Thousand Doors” follows this model but each author tells a story focused on the same main character allowing the separate selections to flow together. The stories are uniquely tied together and connected, even at the end, in way that gives the anthology the feel of a typical novel.
Anthologies are well suited for on-the-go reading or for filling in the time while waiting for appointments, waiting to pick up children, or taking a long trip. “A Thousand Doors” is a complete reading package that all readers will enjoy.
I was given a review copy of “A Thousand Doors” by J. T. Ellison, The Independent Book Publishers Association, and NetGalley. It is a group of compelling stories by a distinguished cast of writers. I recommend it to everyone, lovers of anthologies as well as readers of “traditional” books.
A Thousand doors gives you a look in the many lives she could have led if she made different choices throughout her life.
Mia Jensen is at a pivotal point. Her soon to be ex is an ass, she comes home from a crap day to decompress, and before she knows what happened- she's laying in a pool of her own blood, left to die. What follows is an anthology of sorts into the many lives she could've led. Are any of those better than the life she might leave? Though she's dying, would she change a thing? What regrets might she have?
A phenomenal premise, a pretty good execution. Ellison's portions at the beginning and end are of course stellar, as are most of the other stories. There were a few in the middle that really didn't do it for me, either in style or subject matter. This left the book as a whole a solid 3 for me. Definitely an intriguing look into this character's many lives and a fantastic collection of some of my favorite authors.
Thanks to NetGalley and Two Tales Press for this copy. All opinions are my own.
I am not a fan of anthologies but this is not typical. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is the brainchild of J.T. Ellison with a cadre of great authors to achieve the vision.
It is a story of “what if”. What if I did this instead of that, what would life be like now? This is the story of Mia who gets an opportunity to see the what if’s in her life. Each “what if” is written by a different author with their own style;with their own set of emotions.
I highly recommend this book. It is not only a very original way to handle the subject but exposes the reader to many different authors. Kudos to J.T. Ellison for pursuing her vision for this novel.
Thank you to #Netgalley and #TwoTalesPress for approving my request. The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own.
In exchange for an ARC of this book, I agreed to give my honest and unbiased review. I commend J.T. Ellison and the other writers for undertaking the task of writing Mia's life stories. Each author's entry is as unique and different as the authors themselves. It made for a very adventurous read. On the day that Mia Jensen is killed by her husband, she begins an amazing journey into what if's, or past lives or life memories. Each life is so vastly different from the next. My favorite was her life as a homeless woman. My least favorite was her life as a seeker, but that was because I did not understand some of the terminology that was used as I have never studied yoga. The main thing that the lives have in common is that Mia does not seem to remain satisfied or content like a piece is missing. So what is the point of all this soul searching or traveling? Pick up the book and find out. Discover if Mia can make the right choice and find peace.
Mia. Running through her what if’s and could have beens. What if you changed one part of your day? What if you said something a little differently? How different could your life have turned out to be? Would you be a lawyer, senator’s wife/husband, DEAD perhaps? A Thousand Doors is the perfect anthology for those who dream of what may have happened/what could happen. I would definitely recommend this book!
The concept of this book is that each person’s life is the result of each decision we make along the way. The future is undecided until the person makes a choice.
This book consists of short stories by different authors, all with the main character of Mia Jensen, at different ages and in different circumstances. They are all wonderfully written and several brought me to tears. It is amazing how in the limited pages of a short story my heart could break over and over again for Mia being in the situations that result from her decisions.
It was a slow read for me. I generally take a few hours or days, in-between finishing a great book and beginning a new one. I like to absorb the story and let is settle. That is what happened with each short story of this book. I had to wait a few hours or more before I could continue to the next one. That shows to me how much I loved this book. I would not need that time to let the story settle before moving to the next one, if it was not written so well that it had me in that state.
I have previously read only one of the contributing authors, Kerry Lonsdale. I will definitely be looking into the works of the others, after reading this emotional book. If they can bring out such strong feelings in me in a few pages, I cannot imagine how touching a full length book would be.
I want to thank NetGalley.com for the precious gift of this book and putting these memories in my mind. It does make me think back on my own life and wonder what would be my present, if I had made different decisions in my past.
Truly a smorgasbord of talent. I know I got to read this book for free thru Netgalley , but I will buy a copy. 5 stars.
J.T.Ellison , Author and Editor of "A Thousand Doors": An Anthology of Many Lives: has include a fantastic line-up of authors to write their short story of Mia. Just one decision and change of luck opens the door to a vast choice of alternatives for the character.I loved the different stories which each had the distinct flavor of each author. I would recommend this Anthology to readers who enjoy a unique, intriguing, intense concept of different choices and stories.
This was brilliant! Written by several amazing authors, the story compiled of chapters of various alternative versions of Mias life. A very unique approach and interesting idea. It was also wonderful way to try new authors I haven't read yet! I will be looking into several of them now to try their books! J.T. Ellison is among one of the authors I never read before and was surprised to read how wonderful the writing was. This is a fun way to get a taste of different authors writing style in one book. Give this a try...it was good!
The premise for collection of short stories written by a plethora of female writers sounds so wonderful, but whilst reading them I could not shake the feeling that for me personally it did not quite live up to its billing..
Some of the stories, mostly in the latter half of this anthology are really good, but I found it hard to marry them together. Yes, the name of the main character and her main characteristics are roughly the same, but the stories have no apparent connection beyond that. It missed that bit of cohesion I wanted from it.
I had hoped that it would be obvious in the story that Mia had started from the same place, but that decisions he had made throughout her life altered her future. I expected each story to pin point a choice that change the course of her life, but this was not that and I was a bit disappointed by that. Each story set Mia in a completely different life. There was hardly any common ground between the stories, Common themes, yes, like husbands that rule her life in one way or another, and quite a bit of murder, but no common starting place. These stories felt like they could have been written by the authors at any time rather than specifically for this anthology.
Though it was not quite what I expected, overall I liked a lot of the stories in this anthology and when I let go of my expectations I did enjoy this anthology as a whole. There were only a couple of stories that did not work for me, but averaging my ratings for each story it would be just under the 4-star mark, which I am happy to round up.
Thank you J.T. Ellison for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I rate this book a 4.5 out of 5 Stars.
Finally an anthology that I LOVED! Every single author nailed their short story. There was not one that I did not enjoy. This is seriously the dream team of Authors, and my mind was blown with the creative geniuses! It's like someone whispered in J.T.'s ear "Build It, And They Will Come" (or for us readers, Write It, And They Will Read) Bow down to these queens! Seriously, they all just blew my mind!
We've all played the what if game, What if I did this? What if I chose that? What if I never met so & so? What if I moved there? What if I took that job? It's something we all do, always wondering if the choices we didn't make, turned out better than the choices we did choose. I love that Mia got to see what those "what ifs" were, she got to see how her life panned out, in all kinds of ways. If you had the option to answer your what if questions, would you?
These woman wrote an amazing book, it didn't even feel like a series of short stories, they were all cohesive and flowed seamlessly, I at time's forgot I was reading several different authors. Such an amazing job well done. And don't you dare ask me which one was my favorite, because that is impossible to answer.
Reader, beware that once you pick up this book, you won't want to put it down. So when you start reading, give yourself a good amount of time. This book is highly addictive, and un-putdownable for sure!
This is a very unique anthology and I love how we get to travel through the many doors of what could of been as we get glimpses of Mia in very different situations and how she handles them! I have never read an anthology like this before and I loved reading all the different stories by the many authors that were included in this amazing blend of stories and styles. Very well done!
A good book; but, I think I prefer to read a book rather than a bunch of short stories. Some of the stories left me wanting more. Still an interesting and fun read!
I have never read an anthology, being pleasantly surprised by this book.
It's about Mia Jensen and the millions of possibilities of her life if she had made different choices when the road of life reaches the crossroads.
Every story is extraordinary, making you come into the lamb's skin, living her intense emotions.
Amazing!
Wow! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this fabulous, unusual book! We have all wondered about the "what if" possibilities in our life, where one little decision could have totally done a 180 on your life.
Each of the authors did a wonderful job of taking a "what if" of Mia's life and giving us a glimpse into all the possibilities for her. So many of them on their own would make great stand-alone books!
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for providing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when I requested this book. I wasn’t sure how this would work. Without giving too much away, each chapter is a different version of the main characters life. My favorite chapters being The Homeless Woman and The Lawyer.
So many of the chapters left me wanting to find out more, and if I liked a writers style I searched for previous work of theirs to add to my future reading. Fun being able to be exposed to a lot of authors I typically wouldn’t have gotten the chance to.
Please pick this up. I devoured it in about two days. I would have given this five stars, but I felt the story ending was a little predictable. 4.5 stars would make a great addition to any collection!
One of the most unique takes on anthologies I have ever read! All the different stories work cohesively to make for an intriguing and entertaining experience for the reader. I wish there were more details about what changes led to each version, but that's the only complaint I have.
Wow, what an exciting Anthology! I loved the premise of this one. PLUS, the collaboration of authors coming together for this piece was amazing. The story of Mia dying at the beginning and then each author telling us what each of them imagined Mia experiencing in different “What Ifs”- was perfect that it felt like a singular story told by one author. Short Stories aren’t my usual genre however, this was so unique and was such an emotional rollercoaster for me from beginning to end. After I finished, I thought about this one for a few days after and felt this deserved 5 stars hands down because I couldn't stop thinking about it. I highly recommend this book, it must be one of my top favorites this year.
Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC and allowing me to give my honest opinion. This is a must read for everyone!
Really liked this one. I haven't read anything like this before. The concept was super unique & interesting - each of Mia's lives were awesome. I found myself wanting to read more than just that chapter. JT Ellison & her crew knocked this one out of the park. Would definitely recommend!
