Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for an ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.
2.5 star review, rounded up.
This is the second Teresa Driscoll book I've read. I liked the first one and remember it being a page-turner. On that basis, I was excited to try out this novel.
Unfortunately, it just didn't work for me. I did not find the characters to be relatable, unfortunately, even though the women--in different ways--were dealing with what we could broadly and generically call "women's issues" that would normally make me feel connected. I won't give anything away, but the actual "promise" sort of puzzled me. It was a serious and real issue, but I was having trouble understanding how the adult characters were relating to this act they committed when teens.
I don't want to discourage others from reading it--I just might have set the bar too high or have too-high expectations in general for this genre these days since I read so much of it. At any rate, this is not one I can personally, enthusiastically recommend.
Often I start a book thinking I’ve read this plot line before. That’s what I thought with this one. I was wrong. Great plot twists.. Great character development. I highly recommend this book for your summer reading list. Very well done.
I am sorry for not reviewing fully but I don’t have the time to read this at the moment. I believe that it wouldn't benefit you as a publisher or your book if I only skimmed it and wrote a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for not fully reviewing!
The Promise was very good. I thought the characters really brought the story to life. What a horrible secret to hide only to find out the truth. I would definitely recommend this book.
I found this book very slow burning and not in a good way! I actually stopped reading it at one point and only after reading others reviews decided to persevere and go back to it but wishing I hadn’t bothered! Felt very underwhelmed by the book, didn’t like any of the characters and it seemed to take forever to get going and catch my attention but then went 100 miles an hour at the end at all seemed very rushed and honestly quite unbelievable! The whole story seemed like a waste of time and I’m really disappointed with it. The tag line and description was what grabbed me with this book and sadly it’s the only thing than did... the book then did not live up to the expectations they set!
I found this book, overall, a bit boring. I felt "the promise" and "the secret" kept being referred to, but I didn't feel that building of suspense, it was just becoming annoying. When the secret was finally revealed, it felt anticlimactic. The premise of the book is built around this particular secret and as you follow the story, I didn't feel it was all tied together well. I didn't understand why certain events happened or what they had to do with the secret.
Towards the end I felt the story got a bit more interesting and there was a revelation that supported the "psychological thriller" aspect, but once again, I didn't feel it tied in well with the rest of the story.
I gave this book 3 stars because I didn't hate it, but I felt it was lacking. I would try reading another book by this author in the future.
Overall I enjoyed it. Although slightly disappointed in the what the big secret. Although the way the big secret came to be shocked me the most! I felt the hurt and betrayal the 3 friends went through, but it was nice to see how love and friendship go such a long way. This book was a bit slow in places and wasn't what I expected but was still an enjoyable read :)
Good book with well developed characters, this is a quick read with lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Very enjoyable book and I would recommend it to friends!
This was a really disappointing read. It started off promising, but became quite cumbersome and I wished they'd just talk about what happened already. And then you find out what happened, and I was completely underwhelmed and thought it was such a silly thing that these ADULT WOMEN still think is a huge deal. Then the other twist at the end was just a little ridiculous. Not a fan of this one.
This was an absolutely brilliant and truly gripping story. The build-up was very good and I never knew who could be trusted or who, if anyone, was telling the truth. Though flawed, the characters were well-drawn by the author Teresa Driscoll, which made the book more realistic and believable. Towards the end, I thought I had the story all figured out but I was wrong!
Well worth the read and highly recommended, "The Promise" fully deserves it's five stars.
This was my first read by Teresa Driscoll, but it won't be my last.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel at my own request from the publisher via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
I have no idea why but I've always enjoyed stories set in the UK. There's just something about the British culture I find appealing. In this case, my bias served me well as characters in The Promise were especially delightful, even as they navigated their way through a series of harrowing events and circumstances. The story itself was narrated by the main character and alternated between converging plot lines from the past and present. Three young girls become best friends at a boarding school and end up sharing a dark secret they promise to never divulge. The author keeps the story moving at a brisk pace while also allowing the reader to know each of the characters enough to become emotionally invested. I hesitated to award a full 5-star rating because the climactic ending was a bit of a letdown (at least in my opinion). Still, The Promise was a suspenseful read with engaging characters and excellent storytelling. Overall, I highly recommend.
Although this book by Teresa Driscoll was quite predictable, I must say she did insert a few unexpected twists and turns in her story line. This is my first Teresa Driscoll novel, and I look forward to picking up one of her other books in the near future. This was a quick read, and although the storyline was a little predictable, the author did a nice job developing her characters. Definitely worth the read.
Thirty years ago, Beth, Sally and Carol made a promise to never tell what happened during their time at boarding school. Now, the school is gonna be demolished and their secret is going to come to light. Initially I was intrigued, but the story dragged along for two thirds of the book and when the "promise" is revealed I was like "wait, that's it????". Then things get crazy in the last couple of chapters and we get all the twists we didn't get the rest of the book, so it felt a bit rushed.
Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book started out slow for me so it took me a few day's to get through it but it started getting better about half way through then it kept my interest and I was able to finish it and liked the book.
Unfortunately, this falls in the category of unimpressive in this genre. It happens to me a lot as the market becomes saturated with stories. I wanted to love it and hoped I would. I didn't.
It was just underwhelming. I didn't feel any mystery here.
The Promise is about three girls- Beth, Carol and Sally- who met at a Catholic boarding school and build a strong friendship when they were young. But there was a secret they were keeping that no one knew about....or did they? Many years later the school is going to be demolished and the women find out about it and become scared that their secret will come out. Will there secret be discovered? This was a slow read at times but overall a nice read. Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an ARC copy.
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Promise was an okay kind of thriller book. At first, I was super into it but then everything just kind of felt like it was dragging along. It made the book a bit boring and I sort of lost interest in trying to solve the whole mystery.
Now at this point in a book, I would totally break out the wine. However, I was kind of sick when I was reading this (and other ARC's) so yeah.. no alcohol was consumed while reading this book.
Back to this book, well in it you will meet Beth, Sally, and Carol. These girls all met at a Catholic boarding school and become fast friends. They all dealt with something bad while there though and this whole thing changed their lives from that exact moment. Many years later, they are all finding out that the school they went to is finally closing.
Beth, Sally, and Carol were obviously hiding something. Whether it was the same thing they were hiding - I had no idea. However, we do learn what secret they were hiding throughout the book. Carol's secret was so freaking sad. I have no idea how she dealt with all of that on her own. Yes, the girls knew about some of it but they didn't know the whole thing. So yeah, she's super strong and can basically handle everything now.
Again, this book was okay. Even though I lost interest the characters and their story were intriguing to a point. I am glad that I took a chance on this book but at the same time, I'd be okay without knowing about it.
I disagree with some of the reviewers stating that the book was too slow or disjointed. I actually enjoyed the build-up and the story and thought it was well written, although I did feel that the ending felt a bit "tacked on" and for a time the story went in a slightly different direction, although it all pulled together at the end. I would recommend this book.
Great mystery! Sally, Carol and Beth are three best friends who went to boarding school they have kept in touch until the last 10 years. The school is being demolished and Sally and Beth to try Carol and this is where the mystery begins... what has happened to Carol, why is she avoiding Sally and Beth, what is Carol hiding.. You will just have to read to find out! A fast paced mystery and it kept me reading into the night!
I think I was expecting too much from this book. The blurb and all the reviews increased my expectations. It starts off quite slow however the ending really speeds up. I found the book a bit repetitious and was hence a bit disappointed.
