Emotional, heart-wrenching, gripping and full of courage - an absolute must-read!!
I loved this book so much I now have the audiobook which will be featured on my blog.
Fabulous love story, full of twists and turns of the heart. Would highly recommend to fans of this genre.
I love books about WWII, so I was excited to read this one! Unfortunately, it wasn't my favorite. The writing just didn't work for me, and the story didn't feel like it was researched well. It left a lot to be desired.
Beautifully written although not what I was expecting at all.. The book is extremely detailed and well researched with a strong female main character. I'm sure historical fiction fans will love this.
I was certainly lured in by the synopsis but the actual book was a rather large let down. The story was cliche and came off seeming under researched. The characters aren't very good either, they didn't come off as very well crafted or believable. It was just a let down of a book.
There is quite a history between France and Germany over Alsace and I so enjoyed the history lesson within this story which sent me on a quest to learn more. Sharon did not hold back in painting the picture with her prose of a gloomy, horrifying time in humanity. Then to lighten things up she also gave us a love triangle like no other between Sibyl, Jacques (her childhood sweetheart), and Major Wolfgang von Haagen (a German officer). How Sibyl kept her different persons straight (Sibyl, Jeanne, and Marlene) amazed me, as I waited for a slip. If I had to pick a favorite character it would be Wolfgang as he was so complex and the interaction between him and Sibyl kept me reading.
To be honest I actually read this story prior to its release date and only gave it 3 stars and didn’t publish my review which I am glad I did not because after reading it again it deserves 4 stars. Since I read an ARC copy both times I am hoping that what bothered me so much the first time I read this book was re-edited and corrected...in the first quarter there was some redundancy making me think that my bookmark was not working which took away from the beginning for me. However, once Sibyl arrived in France the story took off and I mean really took off.
I have had the honor of reading the Quint Chronicles Series by Sharon Maas and at first was hesitant as to whether a story about WWII spies would be a stretch for this author. Thank you Sharon for proving me wrong, for writing such a captivating, heart-wrenching story with parts with so much emotion I clenched my fists, gritted my teeth, held my breath... Best writing by this author thus far. I recommend this different take on a WWII spy novel to those who really enjoy reading gripping historical stories based on actual facts.
I received a complimentary copy (or ARC) of this book from Bookouture via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you net galley for the opportunity to read this ARC in return for an honest review. Sharon Maas has done it again she truly is the queen of historical fiction. As usual a strong female protagonist a great holiday read
The Soldier's Girl started off promising a good story. A young English woman spends her childhood in pre war Alsace and is recruited into the SOE because of her multi lingual talents. However, badly written and unbelievable characters, rushed descriptions of a country at war and poor research and dialogue let the story down.
Sybil, an English nurse who grew up in Alsace, is recruited as a spy in 1944 to help the resistance in France. When she arrives in Colmar she is reunited with her childhood sweetheart Jacques who is fighting for the French Resistance, but she also meets the German commandant for the area, Wolfgang, and strikes up a friendship feeling that she will be able to get good information from him........ but how will Jacques feel about this and what danger is she creating?
A good storyline and I liked the concept of the love triangle, there were some good characters and background information, my only criticism is that I felt the ending was a bit rushed, but still well worth reading
I really liked this book. It was a different WW2 novel. At first I thought it was going to be the typical WW2 romance but it wasn't... there was a love triangle (of sorts) but the romance wasn't the main story. It was the story of an English girl who grew up in Alsace (a portion of French which borders Germany and which switched between German and French rule for many years), leaves before the war and then circumstances make her return during the historical battle of Alsace, one of the last battles in France during WW2. I liked the feel of the book. I liked the writing and the setting.
Now, juries out as to whether I liked the main character. Frankly I found her too fickle for her role (I cant say more without spoilers) and sometimes quite annoying. Anyway good book. Not groundbreaking but good. That said, I need to let go of WW2 books for a bit.
3.5 stars rounded up.
A real behind the scenes view of the war. It's one thing when you are dropping bombs are other long range weapons. It's a new challenge when the enemy has a face. It was a challenging book to read but I learned some much and glad that I took the time to read.
I've been a fan of Sharon Maas' writing. I think I've enjoyed all of her books so far.
I have to say this book or rather the description of the book in the blurb was so off. The story is nothing like the blurb says. In actual fact, the storyline is far better and engrossing.
Sybil, a young English woman in the second world war, is working as a nurse when her abilities are noticed and is recruitment to become a secret agent. In her role as a secret agent, she ends up in Alsace, her home after her father committed suicide and one of the happiest places in her life. Only this time, her mission is to help free Alsace from the Germans.
An engrossing story, with a very disappointing ending. I almost felt that the author gave up on the story in the end and just wanted to end it. Would have been a great book had the ending been different.
Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for the review copy of this book.
I love this author’s books and I was delighted to see that she had a new release out and couldn’t wait to get started on the story – an I have to say that it is a very well written and captivating story that held my attention throughout.
I thought the main characters were excellent, very well developed and they had brilliant personalities, quite contrasting but you could see the friendship and how it had developed. The plot is lovely and I love reading books on this period and I think the author has done a brilliant job of bringing it to life.
Five stars from me – very highly recommended story of love and loss
I am a fan of historical fiction and this is a good story. The book was hard to read at some points but was worth sticking with it as most of the book was very good.
This was a decent read. I actually liked it! The beginning was a bit slow for me, going through Sybil's teenage years and meeting Jacques. I guess we needed to know more about how they met and how she came to becoming a spy. This book was overly descriptive in parts being that it was too wordy for me with certain things that I felt could have been trimmed. I also seem to have a streak of reading love triangles lately! Ugh its just so sad!
I was expecting a war love story but this was more of a spy novel. At times the story was a bit long and boring. Just not for me.
If you love WWII romances, The Soldier's Girl is the perfect book for you.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author. All opinions are my own.
I do love a good historical fiction once in a while and I have to say that I did enjoy this book very much.
It wasn't one that I read all in one day but the story was very good and different from other historical fictions I have read.
I give this 3 1/2 out of 5.
Gripping and enjoyable historical novel that is set during World War Two in occupied France. With love, friendship and betrayal, the author has built up a fantastic plot with colourful characters and a beautiful setting. I highly recommend this book to any lovers of historical fiction.
This is a well written, well researched story based in Alsace during World War II. Sybil is recruited to help the resistance movement against the Germans who occupied the Alsace region at the start of the war. I learned a lot from this book and even googled events and places to learn more.
It is a compelling read and will appeal to readers who enjoy historical romance.
