I was excited to read this book, but I was sadly disappointed. While the book begins in a promising way, overall the text is somewhat disjointed. Cute illustrations and the sentiment is nice.
This was such a delight! I loved the relationship that little Lou shared with this granddads. A sweet story that is sure to tough your heart.

I loved the illustrations in this book. I also loved the relationship between the little boy and his grandfathers. A good story.
This was a beautiful story which can touch people of all ages. It is about being open, encourage and support people when they need you the most. Love is a powerful sent by this picture books. The color scheme and art were beautiful.
Cute.
A young boy and his father and pops do everything together. When pop has a fall and must stay in a wheelchair they think the days of doing everything together is over and then the boy has an idea to keep him included.
This touching picture book follows Lou and his grandfathers as one of his grandfathers deals with the aftermath of a fall. I recommend this book for all classrooms as it could easily be a form of bibliotheraphy for anyone whose grandparents are ill.
This was a cute story about a child and his grandparents and struggle they face when one of them is injured and difficult changes they must endure.

This is one of my favorite books of the year and one I will cherish for a long time. The themes are such a treasure: queer grandparents, disability, aging, solidarity with neighbors, cultivating one's unique skills and hobbits, and the simple love of grandparents for their grandkid. What a tremendously inspiring and beautiful story! If there were a picture book I would buy as a gift to friends and families in February, it would be this one. Let me also add that the story and the illustrations were well crafted, with lots of place for humor and laughter.
There is only one thing I didn't like about this book, it is the color of Pops' face when he is back from the hospital. This ghostly blue was very unsettling --and frankly quite scary--, and I think I would have enjoyed a little more aliveness on his face at that time.
This is a really good and well crafted children book! As someone who spends a lot of time with my grandpa to this day I recanted memories of my childhood with him and wanting to be just like him along with how things change and how people age. I think it had a really good moral to the story and isn't a story we see a lot of. I enjoyed that there are two male role models in the picture and how they are both very different and are main character wants to be like both of them equality.
I love this book with its heartfelt message of caring, love and celebrating life together. Lou is a little boy who spends every Saturday with Granddad and Pops. They share breakfast and then "they walk to the library hand in hand, like a chain of paper dolls." In the afternoon they spend quality time casually hanging out and enjoying the things they each love to do together.
One day on the way to the library Pops has a fall. Sirens ring out, an ambulance appears and Pops is whisked away. That evening news arrive that he will need a wheelchair.... not just for now.... but forever. Oh my!
This turn of events in Pops life makes him sad and depressed causing him to withdraw from the world around him. He barricades himself in his room and refuses to engage in life. Lou can't bear to see Pops so despondent so he, Grandad and the neighbours concoct a plan to cheer Pops up and get him up out of his bed and enjoying life once more. Do you think it will be successful and Pops once again will be his fun-loving self?
This book is about family (no matter how that term is defined), relationships, love, depression, problem solving, disability, and perseverance. I love the intergenerational factor. The illustrations are so well done showing emotions and caring on each page. I highly recommend this book.
Beware the tears, as this book could sweetly make them fall. Granddad and Pops spend every Saturday with Lou. They have a routine. First breakfast, then the library, and some playtime. One Day, Pops takes a tumble, and the news is not good. He will have to use a wheelchair the rest of his life. This makes him sad, and Lou doesn’t want pops to be sad, so he comes up with a plan. It’s so sweet and nice, it will get your heart doing a pitter patter. Granddad and Pops could be spouses, brothers, friends, or they could be father and son. The book never says because it’s not important to the story. I bring it up in the review because I read it as a couple based on the illustrations, and we need more books like this. Books about various types of relationships, and books about changes when someone gets older, that isn’t just about explaining death. It's very well done, and I loved every minute.
This is a story about Lou who spends weekends with his grandfathers. They go to the library, read books and take walks. One Saturday, Pops takes a fall and ends up in a wheelchair. He is depressed. It takes Lou and Pops, working together, to cheer up Pops.
I enjoyed this book. It had several lessons such as the value of time spent with grandparents, overcoming adversity and then need to help family. Others have commented about the sexual orientation of Pops and Granddad. This is not an outwardly, apparent theme in the book. I don’t think it lends or detracts from the story. It is what it is. A fine way to possibly present this issue without it being “AN ISSUE”. I liked the illustrations, as well.

I really LOVED this story! A Plan for Pops follows Lou, who goes to visit Grandad and Pops each Saturday. The trio have a comfortable routine of eating breakfast together, then heading out to walk to the library. Next it's time for lunch, then Lou listens to stories from Pop (until Pop dozes off) before tinkering on inventions with Grandad.
Unfortunately, one Saturday, Pops takes a tumble as they're leaving to go to the library. His fall is serious enough that he'll be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Overcome with deep depression, Pops refuses to come out of his bedroom for weeks. During that time, Grandad and Lou come up with plans to help cheer Pop back up again.
What I love most about this story is that so many potentially "big" themes are tackled, but none are discussed in a blatant way. Grandad and Pops are a different kind of family, but no big deal is made about that -- they're just shown as a loving couple. They also each have very different interests, but it's clear that they complement each other well. There is never any doubt about their love for Lou and the enjoyment they get from his visits.
I also like that he story shows how Pops' withdrawal from daily life affects Grandad and Lou, but there is not some insta-fix to overcome his depression. It's a slow process, and I like how real that is.
5 very enthusiastic stars for this book -- I strongly recommend it for everyone who likes spending time with their grandparents.
Thank you to NetGalley and Orca Book Publishers for providing me with a DRC of this book.
This is such a caring, sweet book about the relationship between Lou and his two grandfathers. Every Saturday, they have breakfast, go to the library, and spend the afternoon together. Pops and Grandad are very different, and I love the way the author shows Lou interacting with these two very different grandpas. One Saturday, Pops has a fall and is confined to a wheelchair. He is depressed and does not want to do anything. Lou comes up a plan to get him back into their regular routine. I loved Lou's imagination as well as his relationship with his grandparents. Lou tries different things to cheer up Pops and finally with the help of Grandad, they succeed. This persistence is wonderful to see and shows how important this relationship is. Grandad and Pops were a same-sex couple which was portrayed simply as Lou's grandfathers and there was no other mention about it. I like that this was just a normal relationship. The illustrations were cute, yet the colours were a bit pastel. I would recommend this book to any child looking for a nice story about family spending time together, especially with their grandparents. The publisher, Orca Books, generously provided me with a copy of this book to read. The rating, opinions and ideas are my own.
What a sweet, sweet book of love and care for those closest to you. I loved the diverse family portrayed as well as the stages of grief and loss. The family worked through the changes, gave Pops time and space to heal, and then gently encouraged him to stay living life again. A truly beautiful book.
Lou is a young child who spends every Saturday with his two Grandfathers. They have breakfast, go to the library and have fun together. One day Pops has a fall and must go into a wheelchair. Lou comes up with an idea to help his Pops overcome his isolation. I really like books that have a positive outcome when it comes to children and older adults. I am a Grandma and must admit am not as energetic and well as I was when I was a Mom. Children need to know the circle of life and that sometimes we can't do things they want but we are still able to teach them and have fun with them. I love the message this book sends and the love of Lou for his Grandfathers. I highly recommend this book to 3-7 yr olds.

This is such a heartfelt and sweet book about the relationships between Lou and his two grandfathers. Every Saturday, they have a routine to have breakfast, go to the library, and spend the afternoon together. One Saturday, Pops has a fall and is confined to a wheelchair. Lou thinks up a plan to get him back into routine
I loved the imagination of the son as well as the relationship between him and his grandparents. Pops is clearly depressed after his accident, even though he's described as 'sad'. The persistence of Lou in making sure he cheers up Pops is lovely to see. It shows the loyalty of family and how important having somebody is in your life. I appreciated that it didn't make a big deal about how his grandad and Pops were a same sex couple. I also loved the part about their routine at the library. I can so clearly see a family doing exactly what they did. I would recommend this book to any child looking for a nice story about family and determination.
I love that this picture book is about the child’s two grandparents, but not about them as a gay couple, but about them as they relate to their grandchild.
This is a sweet story of a grandchild, Lou and their grandfathers, and the special time that they have together. (It is not clear in the story, what gender Lou is, and it does not really matter to the story).
When Pops has a fall, Lou and Grampa have to come up with a way to cheer him up.

Good for any child that has a spcecial time with their grandparents.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
Heather Smith has given us a book for the ages. The story grapples with concepts that many children face as they watch their grandparents get older. The book also deals with problem solving and empathy. I can't wait to share this book with others.
I liked this story as a lesson in family values. Perseverance, Patience, Respect and more are taught to the child main character by Grandad and Pops. It is always nice to see a multigenerational book, though more unusual to not have the parents drawn of mentioned. A story of aging and failing health and the very real scenario of depression in older adults. It has a sweet ending and sweet message so I recommend picking it up and reading it for sure.
