Loved this book. I didn't find it predictable at all. I ended up flying through it. I even purchased my own copy.
Wow, I loved reading this book! It was so fast paced and I couldn't put it down-it took me about 3 hours to read it. I just devoured it! I wanted to know what the mystery was going to be that they were going to solve, wanted to know how it was designed to mess them up.
One comment was that it was a night of fire and porcelain. That it very true, from the fire that Shane died in to the threat of flames at the house. And Doll Face, and the various porcelain dolls that were scattered in the story. There were other things, but those two things kinda encompass this book.
I enjoyed how we alternated between the different characters. Perspective is pretty important, and the way Ruby though of her previous relationship with Parker and how he viewed it. Yeah, Parker was kinda pretty awful, and as we learned how truly gross he was, well, I enjoyed how things ended!
We were set up to think one way, and I kinda knew that we were deliberately lead to think that way, but I didn't consider the implications, so that twist was shocking yet made total sense! Just an excellent sign in a book!
This book was so fantastic and such a great read! Loved it!
It’s taken me so long to write this review, and that’s honestly because my thoughts on this one are a bit all over the place. It’s been a month since reading it but I’m still so confused. I definitely didn’t hate it, but I also didn’t love it, and I keep going back and forth on which side of the scale I’m leaning closer towards. We’re gonna try and sum up my thoughts though so please bare with me.
One thing that I can for sure say I didn’t like about this one was the characters. I will say that I don’t know if i was supposed to like any of them or not, but the only one that I actually had any patience for was Ruby since I think she’s the only one that’s actually a victim in here. The rest of them were just…bad. Other than the obvious bad guys, who you hate from the moment you meet them, the rest of them were just pretty shitty people. And their motives were awful and the secrets they kept were awful and I don’t know, maybe I need to read more thrillers but wow I hated the lot of them. I will say that they were somewhat compelling to read, and although that kept me turning the pages once I was done the book I was just left feeling very bleh about them all.
The thing that was done best in this book, for me, was the storyline. The premise was intriguing and kept you reading and all the plot twists that are thrown at you throughout the book keep you guessing. I can’t tell you if this book is anything revolutionary since again, I don’t read many thrillers, but I found it to be an interesting story and the twists did surprise me. It was also a pretty dark read, I know that probably goes with the genre, but for me it was just kind of uncomfortable to read at times. And that’s not a knock against the book because it was totally the point and it was well done, just personal preference. But it did leave a bad taste in my mouth and still makes me sad when I think about it. Definite trigger warnings for physical abuse, mental abuse, stalking and probably more things that I’m blanking because damn this was a book.
So there we have it. I thought that actually writing this would help me out a bit but apparently not because I’m still confused. This was a fast paced and fairly easy to read book full of plot twists, but you do need to deal with characters that are awful and some dread filled scenes.
I am disappointed in this book.
The description sounded amazing, but the writing is so slow that the suspense never really builds. This is a hard pass for me.
Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for this ARC.
This is exactly what I needed!
A fantastic YA mystery with hints of the board game Clue sprinkled throughout the night.
I blew through this, it was so addictive.
The story is nothing new, but the writing had me turning page after page!
Something I will recommend to anyone looking for an easy, quick read with some surprises thrown in.

2 stars. I read this in one sitting during a power outage and at times I was genuinely creeped out. Wasn’t a big fan of the pacing or where and how we’d get glimpses into the back story and the why. And I found every plot twist super predictable.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book seems so up my alley, murder-mystery type plot is my favourite little subgenre. However this book doesn’t really deliver. The characters are flat or confusing. The plot also is isn’t compelling and able to grasp and keep my attention. I think the author threw so much info about the cast and tried to see what would stick unfortunately not much did.
I’m going to have mostly negative things to say about this book but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it on some level. The story was rather bizarre and completely unrealistic. It felt like the script for a slasher movie more than a novel. I think this is a book best enjoyed by turning off your disbelief, skepticism, and maybe your brain in general and just going with the flow. As soon as you start questioning all the plot holes and loose ends become visible. If you can just go with it, it’s a fun, fast paced thriller and a real page turner.
I kept feeling like something was strange about the writing style. Something was a bit off and I couldn’t quite place my finger on what. It was very disjointed, full of sentence fragments, manic in tone and felt somehow jagged. It was definitely not beautifully written. I do think that this was done on purpose to fit the frantic pace and cartoon-like brutality of the story. It was uncomfortable and suspenseful and made it hard to stop reading.
I have to say that I figured out the villain(s) early on as it was pretty obvious who was responsible for the death and who was controlling the party. There’s also a big reveal about another unsolved case and that also held zero surprise. I’m not sure what the deal was with making the characters dress in different colours but the “bad” characters could not have been clearer if they were wearing black hats. The ending was moderately disappointing. There was less resolution than I wanted and it felt more like to story just fell apart.
I think this will appeal to younger readers who want to be entertained for a few hours and don’t want to have to think very much. It is the equivalent of a teen movie like “I Know What You Did Last Summer” without the originality. It was a reasonably entertaining way to spend a few hours but not a book that I would read again, or am even likely to think about again.

When I first saw that this was going to be like one of my favourite games when I was younger and now one of my new favourite tv shows, I also got the feeling that it was a little like Pretty Little Liars. I knew that I had to read this and see how it was going to be able to put it all together.
There is a group of 5 people that come together at a Murder Mystery Party and they must solve a mystery and the one that gets the right answer gets 50,000 dollars. Which sounds like a great story right? I thought so too but there was something lacking.
I am feeling indifferent on this because I want to like this but there was lacking for me. The whole idea for the story is an amazing one but reading it I just didn’t feel the connection that needs to happen being the reader. There was a lot of potential that could have happened, but it didn’t.
It has been a very, very, VERY long time since I have picked up a book to read in bed and stayed awake until I was finished. I mean, such a long time. I’m old…I don’t have that kind of willpower anymore. Sleep trumps all. Let me tell you…Chelsea Pitcher…you kept me up all night!
I enjoyed this book so much. I loved the murder mystery scene because I’ve always wanted to do one (I might be rethinking that now, just saying) and the whole Breakfast Club meets Clue meets I Know What You Did Last Summer feel really sucked me in right from the beginning and had me hooked for the whole thing. Seriously, I need to be really into a story if I’m giving up my beauty sleep.
For the most part, I enjoyed the characters. Ruby wasn’t my favorite and I still have this unsettling feeling about Shane but I think the only character I just couldn’t stand was Parker. He reminds me of an ex of mine and I really just wanted to punch the narcissism right off his face.
Honestly, I’m not saying that this book is perfect. There are flaws; parts of the plotline were a little out there, the “big reveal” was something straight out of a B-rated horror movie and the costumes for the murder mystery were definitely a little on the cheesy side (though I did think they were a fun touch…cheese or not) BUT This Lie Will Kill You is a fun, fast paced and really enjoyable book that I would absolutely recommend.
4.5 stars from me! I was highly entertained!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book to read and give my honest opinion.
This was a slow burning, predictable mystery. The concept drew me in, but I found the characters to be one-dimensional. I continued to read to see how the murder mystery unravelled. I was hoping for more... a twist or surprise, but it fell short for me. If you’re looking for something similar to the television series Riverdale, you may enjoy this one. Overall, it was a quick read with a plot that had so much more potential. ⭐️⭐️/5 for me. It releases December 11, 2018.
As much as I wanted to love this book I found something was missing. I don’t know if it was the characters or the story but I found it hard to connect to.
There's something a little off about your book when the only likeable character is one note and also dead. Pitcher tries to weave a fantastic tale of suspense and thrills but very few of the twists were very twisty. The bad guy is obvious a few chapters in and there's little satisfaction even in that because none of these characters are exactly great people? At best some of them are not terrible people but none of them are lovable or interesting.
Which presents a problem in a thriller where you're meant to root for the cast to survive. At best I felt lukewarm about whether the cast made it out or not because my favourite character died on the first page.
The concept for this book is pretty good, but the writing just can't hold it up. The characters all fall flat. They are all presented as excelling in something, but mostly they just seem sort of dumb for getting wrapped up in this in the first place. They're also REMARKABLY hard to sympathise with. I don't feel bad for Brett regardless of how bad he feels about punching people. Parker feels almost like a ridiculous story book monster.
This book was flavoured very much like Clue, but for little reason. The characters all had to dress in specific colours but...for no discernible reason really. To sort of match their titles? It lacked all the recognisable characters and actual mystery Clue contained. There was no mystery to solve here, the whodunit is obvious.
It was just so hard to get invested in a thriller where I neither cared nor related with the characters. It didn't feel like there were any stakes because who cares if Bully Brett dies? It's just a group of bland teens trying to solve the world's simplest mystery.
The ending leaves no satisfaction for anyone. Everyone is either a worse person for this experience, or dead. The only actually likeable character doesn't spring back to life...and that's it I guess. There were genuinely exciting and interesting moments here and there. I liked how Dollface prepared the rooms for each teen praying on their weaknesses and desires...but ultimately this book felt more like a wet blanket and a raging fire.

The concept was cool, I love playing clue and I really enjoyed the first season of Riverdale, however, I couldn't get into this story. The characters all felt bland and I couldn't push myself to continue to the end.
**Disclaimer: I recieved a free eARC of This Lie Will Kill You from NetGalley and the publishers for review purposes. Thank you to them for letting me read the book.
This Lie Will Kill You by Chelsea Pitcher is a YA mystery novel. The main characters are five teenagers: Juniper, Ruby, Gavin, Brett, and Parker, who are all in their final year of high school and who have all been invited to compete for a mysterious $50000 scholarship by participating in a murder mystery party. Each teen is asked to bring something to the party. The competition is held at a creepy semi-abandoned mansion. Pretty quickly it is revealed that things are not what they seem and perhaps this scholarship isn’t quite as legitimate as it might have seemed. Could it be connected to the fiery death of one of their classmates the previous year? Who knows.
I gave this book three stars. It has been compared to Clue meeting Riverdale, and I totally agree with those comparisons. There is a lot of teenaged drama in this book, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that it’s just not my usual cup of tea, and the mystery definitely reminds me of clue. Each character takes on a role such as “The Underwater Acrobat” and they each have a secret weapon that they bring to the table. Those aspects of the story were super fun, and I was really intrigued to figure out who had invited them all to this event and why they had been invited. As the story progressed, I was caught up in what happened and wanted to know who was responsible. There were lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing and I really enjoyed that.
However, for me I had a hard time liking the characters. Some of them were definitely designed to be unlikeable, but I didn’t enjoy most of them which made it hard for me to care if they actually made it out of the house safely or not. That’s possibly a bad thing to admit, but that’s definitely how I felt. I also didn’t really enjoy the teenage drama that kept happening, though it did come across as realistic, which is definitely a plus for the story.
I really liked the ending of the book. It was just what I hoped I would get out of it. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I won’t be specific but I did really enjoy the end of the book.
Overall, I recommend the book if you enjoy mysteries and also if you enjoy Riverdale. I think it’s a worthwhile read and I am definitely down for more YA mysteries. It’s a genre that I love, dating back to my love of Nancy Drew and Veronica Mars. There isn’t a teenage detective in this one, but you should still pick it up and give it a shot. Also the cover is super cool and perfectly suited the book.
This Lie Will Kill You comes out on December 11th.
As much as I wanted to love this, there was just something missing for me.
It was a super quick read and the intrigue kept me reading, but in the end it just fell a little flat for me. The writing was absolutely beautiful and I enjoyed it very much, but I felt like some things didn't quite add up even at the end of the book. The whole thing was sketchy to begin with and I can't imagine why the characters would ever agree to go there to begin with give what they knew.
In the end, I did enjoy parts of it, but I feel like it could've been executed better.
This Lie Will Kill You by Chelsea Pitcher should be reevaluated as a murder mystery novel because I knew who the killer was the moment I read the first sentence of that character's POV. I am curious how do you have a murder mystery dinner with no food?
I loved the Clue aspects to the book, but it felt too predictable.
3.5 stars
