Usually I love any medical based drama, but had some trouble staying up with the story development in this one, I hated the characters. the basic drama is does the mother have Munchhausen by proxy or is the child really ill. You find out in the end through many twists and turns.

I was not going to give feedback on this book because at only 23% through, I was having a hard time finishing it. For me, the characters, every single one of them, we’re extremely unlikable. I wasn’t connecting to anybody in the book, and the story just seemed repetitive.
I decided to “soldier on” and finish the book anyway. To be honest, I had to skip a lot of parts that we’re very unnecessary. When I got to the end, I was wrong on ‘whodunnit,’ however, everything that came after that was very expected and cheesy.
Unfortunately, I just did not like this book.

3.5 stars. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance copy of this compelling medical drama in return for an honest review. It was certainly a 5 star read in suspense as it kept me up reading all night to learn the unexpected ending. I did have a few misgivings because I often did not like any of the characters, thought they all made too many mistakes or acted unsympathetically, and that the conclusion was overly dramatic and not enough clues to predict the outcome. Still it kept me guessing throughout.

Becky is to some a devoted and caring mother of 15 year old Meghan, but many think she is overly obsessed with her daughter’s health. Meghan was once a bright, athletic teenager but her health has seriously declined for several years.

Becky had a lovely home and a good job and thought she was in a good marriage, but had lost a baby boy from SIDS. She is estranged from her dying mother. She grew up in a dilapidated home where she was taught as a child to lie as her mother faked various illnesses to obtain disability checks. She has put everything aside to care for Meghan, taking her to countless doctors and subjecting her to endless medical tests; the results being negative or inconclusive. Meghan is terrified of needles and some of the tests are painful. Becky is determined to find a cause and cure. Becky’s only respite is an online support group giving her comfort and suggestions.

Her husband has become cold and unsympathetic. He has begun to believe the sicknesses are all in Meghan’s head or that the mother’s concern is being transmitted to Meghan causing psychosomatic symptoms in his daughter.

Becky seems self centered and is combative and aggressive in getting the medical interventions she demands for Meghan. She causes scenes where guards or orderlies are needed to restrain her. She is not above using flirtations and manipulation to get doctors on her side. Anyone who watches medical and some police dramas will think Münchausen syndrome and will feel validated when medical personnel and social workers start coming to this conclusion.

I thought the book was well written. Its structure told the story from both Becky’s and Meghan’s viewpoint, the viewpoint from a sympathetic doctor and also some third person chapters. There is also a couple of murders. Suspense was maintained by the way the chapters were organized. Recommended to lovers of mysteries, especially ones with a medical theme.

Saving Meghan is the first book I’ve read by D.J. Palmer. Saving Meghan is carefully crafted, and it will make you question every character and their motives while you read this book as it barrels towards a completely unexpected and breathtaking conclusion. I had a hard time putting down this book once I started reading it, and I kept reading it after a new book I’ve been anxiously waiting to read arrived because I knew I wouldn’t be able to focus reading anything else until all of my questions were answered. Saving Meghan kept me hooked from beginning to end, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.

It seems obvious immediately. Teenager Meghan has been ill most of her life, visits to doctors and extended hospital stays are commonplace. Doctors soon suspect her mother, Becky of harming her daughter to gain attention for herself. Munchausen syndrome by proxy is the obvious diagnosis for this helicopter mom. Or is it? Just when you think you know what’s going on in this book, you’ll be forced to think again…and again. A clever and twisted tale
