34 year-old Tess Piper is a mess. She is hanging on to her job by her fingernails, drinking far too much and her relationship with boyfriend Max is just about over. The phone call from her dad to say that, after twenty years, the body of her twin sister has been found shakes her to the core and she heads home dreading what she will find.
Although I enjoyed this book I felt it was a little long. Many things could have been dealt with in a far more timely manner and the length definitely didn't increase the suspense. Many of the flashbacks and memories of Tess and her sister Edie weren't necessary and could have been pared down or cut without losing the information contained there. That said I'm sure we would all like a peek into the lives of our old school friends and their families and this was done very well. The futures were realistically spread and no one seemed out of place.
The family dynamic adds to the complexities of the girls' peers and provides many suspects and fall-guys with the clues and recollections containing just enough information for the reader to pick all the scapegoats before arriving at the true culprits.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to Netgalley in return for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a family drama with a less than perfect heroine who doesn't mind gaining information from flashbacks. I don't think this is a book which will stay long in the memory but I'm glad I read it.
The mystery of one twin sister's death slowly unfurls as the chapters transport us between their childhood when Edie disappeared and the present day when Tess, the other twin sister, attempts to solve the mystery as to what actually happened. What at first appears to be a murder by a stranger unknown becomes a more complex entanglement of family deceit and lies until eventually the full truth is disclosed.
Whilst many stories involving twins tend to rely too heavily upon their close bonds Isaac-Henry reminds us that they can also harbour strong feelings of resentment and sometimes even hatred towards each other. By doing this the author maintains a level of intrigue and hence the reader's interest.
Isaac-Henry's astute descriptions and references to objects, furnishings and music from the nineties had me reminiscing and sometimes chuckling, making this a pleasurable read without the mystery element.
I would recommend this to those readers who enjoy a murder mystery that also combines strong emotional elements.

This is a novel about twin sisters who both love and hate each other. They are fraternal twins so don’t look like each other, but are close nonetheless. One is much more outgoing than the other one who is guieter and more observant. They, Edie and Tess, tell their story in alternate chapters. The time period also switches between the 1990’s and late 2000. Even with the change in characters and time period, the storyline is very easy to follow. The story moves along at a fast pace and it is easy to guess what you think is going to happen, but you would be wrong some of the time. As with most psychological thrillers, there are twists and turns that will keep you guessing and confused with who is the guilty party. There is also a big twist at the end that you will not anticipate at all. I found it a very enjoyable book to read and will be recommending it to family and friends. A solid 4 stars.

This is a new author to me. A very enjoyable read. It kept me gripped from beginning to end.
This book is full of suspense and you are constantly waiting for something else to happen
Tess and Edie are twins and as such are very close, that is until the time comes when their uncle pays for them to attend a different school now that they have moved off the bad estate. Edie sees this as her opportunity to choose a different way; to speak better, make different friends, to grow up and have a boyfriend. Poor Tess is left behind and she is struggling and angry that Edie is not as close as she once was. To add to her cares, it is obvious that Edie is the favourite: certainly Uncle Ray’s favourite.
Then Edie fails to return home from school. Tess saw her leaving through the hole in the hedge at the back of the school. As the search continues the police look to the family with suspicion. Twenty years later a body is found 30 miles away, Edie has been found. Twenty years in which Tess has waited for her to return.
The plot is revealed through two different timelines and through two points of view, Edie’s and Tess’s. Predictably the plot revolves around the family’s secrets and lies. Sometimes the plot becomes a bit confusing due to the differing minor characters (generally the school friends of the twins) but the main characters are well-drawn and vibrant. Really well-written and absolutely packed with surprises and unexpected plot-twists and I didn’t guess who-dunnit!
Thank you to the author, publishers and Netgalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.
Absolutely awful. Characters all over the place, adultery, cruelty and nonsense does not a good story make. Poor writing, no redeemable qualities, Sorry, but I. Have to give this zero stars. How some people manage to get published is beyond my comprehension

Edie and Tess are trying to fit in. They live on the other side of the tracks, but they attend an upscale prep school. Edie is popular and Tess is a tag along. They're growing apart. They argue. They have different interests. One day after school, Edie goes missing. No one has seen or heard from her for the past twenty years. Tess thinks she ran off with her boyfriend.
One day Tess gets a phone call from her estranged father, saying a young girl's remains have been lifted from the local reservoir. No one can believe it. While the coroner runs an autopsy, Tess goes home to be with her father and other family members. After all, their the Piper family is tight knit. It turns out Edie was murdered, but something is off. A photo of her and Tess is missing from her bag. While the police investigate, Tess begins digging for answers as well.
Olivia Isaac-Henry has concocted a tale of intrigue and deception. The lead character, Tess, is one of the most complex characters I've ever read about. Even the supporting cast is complex. There's so many layers to the story, too. When you think you know a character, Olivia peels back another layer of the story to shake things up, keeping you on the edge of your seat.
Someone You Know is one helluva who-done-it. Olivia keeps you guessing. The story is split between the past and the present, which makes for a great reading experience. I think the way it is written also makes for rich characters. The characterization is top-shelf. The story never slows down. Someone You Know is a fast paced thriller. The build up is compelling and pulse-pounding. You have the right amount of description and delectable dialogue, making for a realistic feel.
Someone You Know has enough twists and turns to satisfy any reader. It's well written and Olivia delivers the goods with that ending. The atmosphere is incredible, too. I devoured Someone You Know in one sitting. I also dig the cover.
Tess Piper was lucky enough to grow up with a twin sister until the age of fourteen when her twin Edie disappeared. Tess has led her life running from her problems, hidden away in London for the last twenty years until she is forced to confront her worst fears when a body is found; and it’s Edie. The police are closing their investigation in on the Piper family which is forcing Tess to re-evaluate hurtful things from her past and unearth some deep and dark secrets. The police are onto a tried and tested theory, murders are often committed by someone you know!
The first thing I have to say about this book is how well the chronological jumps are written. I have read (as I’m sure plenty have) lots of books where the author jumps around in the timeline and sometimes it isn’t done well. However Olivia Isaac-Henry did this very well. Not once did I start a chapter confused, the story and timeline flowed so well.
Secondly, loved the mysteries, red herrings and twists in the story. I think I went through every character and thought they were the murderer at some point in the book. As the story developed I had my stronger suspicions but still constantly questioned myself as it felt like I was being thrown off the scent. It didn’t stop at just the murder though. I felt like every family secret that was hinted at was it’s own little mystery. Secrets within lies within secrets in that Piper family….and I LOVED them. I won’t go into much more about this as I can’t stand a spoiler, but if you read this, be prepared for your feelings towards characters to go from good to bad to good again…a LOT.
Little nugget that made me feel close to this book was that it was set where I grew up, which I didn’t know until I started reading. I grew up in a small town called Coseley which is actually mentioned in the book which made me so excited in my small little world. As soon as the place references started popping up, the characters immediately had that yam yam twang in my head. Loved it.
Overall, an awesome thriller with a fab storyline. Will most definitely keep you on your toes and keep you guessing right until the very end.
I’d like to thank Avon Books UK and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Someone you Know’ by Olivia Isaac-Henry in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Edie Piper disappeared in 1998 on her way home from school and her twin sister Tess was convinced she’d eventually return, but her body is discovered in the canal wrapped in plastic and weighted down. When the police reopen the case Tess returns to her childhood home and starts asking questions, determined to find out what happened to her sister and who’s not been telling the truth.
‘Someone You Know’ is a disturbing story of dissimilar twins, Edie who mixes with the wrong crowd and Tess who’s smaller, not as pretty and is content to live in Edie’s shadow, until one of them disappears. The chapters alternate between Edie’s disappearance in 1998 to the present time, each chapter moving closer to discovering what happened to Edie. It has a well-thought-out plot, interesting characters, twists and turns, and an ending which although wasn’t startling did reveal the truth and rounded off the story nicely.
A new author with a lot to offer going on this book. I read this in one day as I was so engrossed in it. A book full of suspense, waiting for something to happen but all the time the reader is drip thread additional information as the book flips from character to character and from present to past. Don't get put off by that as it is easy to follow.
Twenty years ago Tess Piper's twin sister Edie disappeared on her way home from school and Tess has always believed that her beloved sister was still alive and living a glamorous life in some big city somewhere. Tess refused to believe that her sister was dead so is devastated when Edie's body is found in a reservoir and the police reopen their investigation. The police focus on the Piper family and others who were in Edie's life suspecting that her death was committed by someone close to her Someone they trust, someone they know..
I would like to thank Net Galley and Avon Books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
In 1998 Edie Swift disappeared on her way home from school. Her twin sister Tess had taken a different route home. Now a body has been found in a local reservoir and police are certain it’s Edie’s body. Tess returns to her home and her dad but can’t help trying to find out what happened to her sister when the police don’t make any headway leading to lots of family secrets being discovered. Struggled wit this one to be honest - found it very slow going until the last few chapters.
Thanks to Netgalley, Avon/Harper Collins and Olivia Isaac-Henry for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
Someone You Know is a book based round the Piper family mostly twin sisters Tess & Edie.Edie died 20 years ago & her body has only now just been discovered,it soon becomes apparent Edie was murdered and so whodunit ?? The story is told from Tess's point of view in the present day as she strives to find out the truth of just what happened to her sister & from Edie's 20 years ago.I felt the story started off slowly and didn't really improve, there were plenty of twists & turns along the way but for me the whole book just lacked that page turning, gripping feel, although the ending was decent enough.A good solid 3 star read and I would read another book from Olivia Isaac- Henry.
Full of twists and surprises, this was good! At first I thought I was going to be reading another “girl on the train” style book with a pathetic and non-reliable narrator but thankfully I was wrong.
The writing flowed well, switching between narrators and past and present timeframes. I thought I had this figured out a couple of times before it finally clicked for me. It was a bit depressing, the characters and family dynamics. Decent conclusion. I would recommend and read more by this author.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Avon Books UK for a copy in exchange for a review.
I found Someone You Know slightly slow to start but it soon picked up and was an intriguing story.
Tess and Edie are twins. When Edie disappears on her way home from school, Tess believes she has run away. Fast forward 20 years and the body of a young female has been discovered in a local reservoir. Tess doesn’t believe it is Edie but her dad is sure that it is. As the case is reopened into Edie’s death, Tess is shocked to discover that her family has been keeping secrets from her.
The story is told in two parts, Edie in the past and Tess in the present. A gripping read which has a good cast of characters with a surprising outcome. I look forward to more from this author.
Thanks to Netgalley, HarperCollins / Avon and Olivia Isaac-Henry for the opportunity to preview this book, published 4 Feb 2019.
This is such a good read. A twin's sister is missing and then her body found. The book takes us through all the family members as well as friends, all of whom appear to have secrets. It's so well told, with the story moving from present day to the time of the murder and yet, it's never confusing and has a good few twists and turns.
An excellent page turner.
4* read.
I liked this book a lot. A real mystery and whodunnit, and until the end, I never figured it out. It’s definitely a page turner, as the story flips back and forth between the time of Edie’s disappearance and twenty years later. Tess has never recovered from her twins disappearance and when a body is found, it brings painful memories back.
The only criticism I have is there are so many supporting characters, they were difficult to keep straight. Some were so minor, they could have been eliminated and it would have been an improvement. But, there was good development of the primary characters, that made everyone into a suspect in her disappearance and death.
Olivia Isaac Henry is a very good storyteller, and I await her next novel. My thanks to Avon and Net Galley for the ARC and the opportunity to review it!
This thriller started well and I was drawn to Tess, a twin who has lost her sister. Then it chopped and changed timelines in order to build suspense and fill in back story and the suspense didn't really build up for me. I finished it but it didn't grip me and one of the least likely people being the perpetrator is getting to be the most likely ending of these thrillers. Not one I'll remember.
Someone You Know by Olivia Isaac-Henry certainly sucked me in! What a fantastic story with an ending that you won't see coming. I read this book quite quickly, needing just one more chapter to find out what happened next. Told in alternative chapters between the present and the past we learn the story of what happened to Edie Piper.
Tess and Edie were twins - and Tess idolised her sister. When they were 14, Edie didn't come home from school one night. 20 years later and Tess has moved away from her family and the shadows of her past. But she has not stopped believing that her sister is still alive and living the good life somewhere. That is until they receive a call that a body has been found in the same place that Edie went missing. She returns home to her broken father to learn the news. As the investigation continues all the members of her family come under the spotlight and the secrets that have been buried all this time threaten to be exposed.
Thanks to Avon Books UK and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.
Firstly thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for the opportunity to read this page turner of a book. I really enjoyed it from beginning to end and all the way through you are guessing as to whodunnit. I must admit I did guess who it was ( chuffed at that). I would have no hesitation in recommending this book. It really gripped me from the first page to the last. I am looking forward to reading more by this author. A cracking read.
I thought this was a great book. Likeable and believable characters. A good story and some unexpected twists. I read this in one sitting and flew through it.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for an honest and unbiased opinion.
