Who would ever suspect the sweet, little old lady living next door to harbor such a dark secret? This book certainly gave me the creeps. I’m not really sure why this book has such low ratings. For me, it hit all the right spots when it comes to a dark, twisty psychological thriller. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Thanks to L.A Deitweiler and Avon Books for the opportunity to read and review this book. The Widow Next Door had me hooked so much that i cancelled dinner plans. The bools centres around an old woman that is fixated on her new neighbours, a young couple. While trying to deal with issues from her past she is sure she is seeing the young wife make similar mistakes that she made. What is real and what is actually in the mind of the old lady. A real page turner that will keep you captivated till the very last page
I was really looking forward to this book.
A domestic thriller/ noir. It took me a long time to get into this book. The premise was good but the story did not live upto my expectations and the blurb from the book. In some places it was very predictable. Having the widow as the narrator was annoying at times. I also guessed who the killer was early on in the book. It was an enjoyable and creepy read just not for me.
I would like to thank the author L A Retailer, Avon Books UK and Net.galley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for giving an honest review.
This creepy thriller had me twisted up in knots of suspense, wondering how it would ultimately end! The author does an amazing job of amping up the suspense using the limited setting of an old widow's house as the backdrop. Fans of B.A. Paris will love this one!
Wow! What a wild ride. I couldn’t put this one down. Between the mystery of what was going on with the couple next door and what the room in the kitchen contained, I was hooked! I never saw the ending coming, and I loved the interspersed stories about the main characters childhood. Very chilling October read!
I received a free e-copy of The Widow Next Door from L.A. Detwiler from NetGalley for my honest review.
A nice creepy story just in time for Halloween. A street with two houses. An elderly Widow in one and a young couple in the other. The Widow is old and lonely and has nothing to do other than watch her young neighbors. What does she see and is she really seeing it or is she imagining them.
This book is told from the Widow and everything she sees through the window. An enjoyable and fun read. I didn't feel like this was a psychological thriller as much as just a creepy book. Glad I had the opportunity to read it.
I love the premise of The Widow Next Door by L.A. Detwiler. I often wonder, how well do I know my own neighbors? I hope no one has scary secrets buried deep. If they do, I don’t want to know!
Here’s the synopsis:
When newlyweds Jane and Alex Clarke move into an idyllic house on the quaint Bristol Lane, they are excited for a new beginning in what will be their ‘forever home’.
And when an elderly neighbour brings them a pie to welcome them, she soon becomes a friend. But she grows a little too interested in the couple next door as she sits watching them, day in, day out, from the rocking chair in her window.
Alex says it will be fine. After all, she’s a lonely widow who just wants some company. But when she invites Jane into her home, who knows what she’ll find there.
I am eager to begin this book, I love a thriller like this one that promises to be super creepy, full of twists!
Due out in November 2018!
Very eerie. Definitely took awhile to decide which character was a killer, which is nice when you read a lot. Twists and turns, but not a stay up all night novel.
I persevered with this book because I don’t like to quit! But it wasn’t the best! There was some really sinister bits and there’s some bits that make you think, but it’s a grower not a shower!
The whole story is told in the point of view of the sweet old lady that loves to watch her neighbours!
Then the perfect neighbours are not all they seem? Or are they? Or is the old lady? Or the cat? Is it real? A dream - I think a lot is left up to readers interpretation! Mediocre in amongst some cracking reads this year.
Wow!!! Wow am I glad to put this book down. It was neither dark nor intriguing not did it have any similarities to Shari Lapena books as the blurb suggested. I found it to be just a monologue by a lonely old woman. So very boring and unenjoyable.
Thank you Netgalley, Avon Books and the author for th ARC.
An old widow lives a lonely life. She gets new neighbors, newlyweds, and projects all her hopes and dreams onto them. She wants her neighbors to live a perfect life together. As she befriends the Mrs, Jane, the widow learns that her neighbors life is not as picturesque as she'd hoped. She rages at the arguments she witnesses from her window.
I was thrilled when I received an electronic copy of The Widow Next Door. It was one of the books I was anticipating reading in October but it was totally not what I was expecting. I kept reading until the very end but I can't help but feel like this one was a letdown. It had potential to be so much more than the endless rambles of an old lonely woman watching her neighbors and seeing disturbing things but never doing a thing about it. Plus, it was nothing like the blurb suggested.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books for my electronic copy in exchange for an honest review.
This novel was interesting. It did not have as many twists and turns as others, but still an enjoyable read.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Those houses on the cul de sac out in the country with few neighbors always seem like the perfect place to be. Maybe not after reading this book. Great characters and suspense with a twist. Thank you to NetGalley for my copy
This book was nothing like the blurb said that it would be. It had potential, sort of a "rear window" scenario where a little old woman sits in her chair and watches her new next door neighbors all day. The problem was, it just seemed to drag on and on, telling about how lonely her life is there alone, and she kept seeing all these horrible things the woman was doing to her husband but she wasn't doing anything about it. Then there was the issue of the other chapters, which seemed to be a flashback, only it never told (unless I missed something) who the flashback was about..... realistically it could have been either the old woman or the next door neighbor. It never tied into the story in any way. So, in all honesty, I cannot recommend this book.
Ask me what this book was about, I’m going to say....no clue. Old lady in a rocking chair, neighbors...is something happening? Maybe? No? I don’t know. I finished the book, but dozed off and had to start back up. On the plus side, very well written descriptions of the bleakness of wanting children.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC
I started off really enjoying The Widow Next Door. A quiet lane with just two houses, in one lives an elderly widow, and in the other a young couple move in. The old lady likes to watch her neighbours from her window and we see the book unfold from behind the glass.
Around a third of the way into the book, I felt it was going to be a slow burner, despite the neighbours interacting. The book goes back and forwards in time (I assume) as we learn about a character from the past but it's not clear who that character is.
I had a few questions about the characters that I was hoping would be answered, but honestly I have been left even more confused. I am not sure what was real, what were memories and what was made up even after finishing the book.
The Widow Next Door had me so intruged that I found the book impossible to put down, in the story we have a lonely old lady, who just sits in her rocking chair looking out of her window across the road at the couple who have moved in, the book kept me in suspense, I really enjoyed it!
Excellent book with a great storyline. Characters that are so well written. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!
I wasn't able to make it all the way through this one--it bored me to tears and there was nothing thrilling about it. Very rambly and did not keep me engaged with the story.
The widow is, I believe, about 87 years old. Although twenty years younger, I admit that I could see some of myself in the book. No, I don't have a "snooping" window...
The widow sees a "fresh" young couple moving in next door. Actually, there are only two houses in the area. A whole new story for her to unravel! Yet, what the widow doesn't yet realize is that there is a parallel to her own life to what will occur between the new neighbors. Alex and Jane go through their "honeymoon" period, their quarrels and then their violent stage. Jane visits the widow often. (Surely Jane knows that her life is being watched through the widow's window.).The widow notices that Jane appears to have an unrest about her. - not unlike her own when her husband was alive. They both had seen their men first as easygoing and charming. Later, this is looked upon as weakness'
Jane and the widow go through periods of unease and not visiting. During these times, Jane is seen physically and mentally abusing Alex. This disturbs the widow to the point where she chastises Jane for her actions. Jane tells her that she is nosy. Of course, Lucy (the widow's sister) died after the (now) widow pushed her onto train tracks. Alex and Jane take a downhill turn for the worse. This, as the widow recalls her own marriage as well as her very unsettling childhood. The widow's early marriage, at 20, most likely was due to her always being "second" to Lucy and wanting to get away from her parents.
After falling down the stairs with only Amos, her cat, to help her, the widow has a visit from Jane
who refuses to help her. Or was some of this (and possibly other interactions) in the widow's mind, only?
Lots of twists but the ending could have been a bit more defining. Great story, regardless. A fast afternoon read!
Many thanks to AVON, UK and NetGalley for a powerful insight into old age, abuse and retribution
