The Crochet Stitch Handbook is basically a Crochet bible filled with loads of helpful tips and tricks. Plus all the information you need to get started in learning how to crochet.
ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was fine. Not super inspiring to me but I’m also not a serious crocheted looking to create my own crochet patterns.
This is an excellent stitch handbook, complete with helpful photographs of each stitch. It is beautifully formatted and would be an excellent addition to any crocheters bookshelf, beginner to advanced. It is a great resource to learn new stitch patterns, which you can then use to design to your hearts content. Highly recommended.
I found The Crochet Stitch Handbook by Betty Barnden to be an excellent book in the Crochet Book world. She is thorough and helpful with a written pattern and a “picture” pattern. My teenage daughter could not put this down. She just kept working through more and more stitches and they were beautiful. There is so much inspiration and ongoing options to choose from and I just can’t say enough about this book to all our friends in the crafting world. If you’re a fellow crafter in the crocheting world, you’re going to want this physical book in your library!
I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I found this book to be one of the most helpful books for crocheting. I have bought many of books, but the instructions are not that clear and I would also end up with a huge mess. This book really taught me some stitches that had pretty simple instructions that I actually understood.
A well put together and clear book of different stitches. Great reference for learning different stitches.
Couldn't download this so I can't really review it. Seems really interesting though, sounds like something I would check out.
A great read for beginner crocheters or those looking to learn a new stitch or two. Pictures are well illustrated and I found the instructions easy to follow. Some good ideas for those looking to learn.
The Crochet Stitch Handbook The Essential Illustrated Reference: Over 200 Traditional and Contemporary Stitches with Easy-to-Follow Charts by Betty Barnden includes step-by-step instructions for basic stitches, textured stitches, fans and shells stitches, mesh and filet stitches, openwork and lace stitches, trims and edgings, clusters, puffs, bobbles, spike, relief, Tunisian, multi-color, squares, and special stitches.
If you crochet, you likely have one or two books like this somewhere in your home. A guide or handbook that offers the basics of a variety of stitches, yarns, and techniques.I happen to have three- mostly because one went missing for a bit and two quickly made their appearance, and then the wayward book reappeared. I often flip through these books when I want to make a new afghan, scarf, or other project and am looking for something more than a basic stitch. Sometimes I am looking for a certain texture or square that I could use to build something unique, or a special edging for an extra touch. Or just to try and hopefully master something new.
The Crochet Stitch Handbook is a solid example of this style of book. I was excited to see little things included that often fall by the wayside, like the extended single stitch. Many of the instructions, stitches, and motifs were familiar or similar to ones that I have seen before, which is expected. I like that there is a key on the edge of each page to give the reader information on the stitch. The only thing I was missing was the information on the way the finished stitch drapes, which another book I have offers- and that often aids in my decision making process for choosing a stitch. However, the instructions and images were well paired and very easy to follow. I would not recommend it for fresh beginners that have just started out and are still learning all of the language and abbreviations, but anyone that has the basics down would do well with this book as their go to guide for stitches and inspiration.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review which has not altered my opinion in any way.
This was a very informational book that helped to show quite a few different details that I did not know when it came to Crochet. This book has convinced me that I should try and get better at Crochet, I have tried a few times, but I am not very good at it. This book has shown me what you can make and it's really quite cool to see.
I would highly recommend this book for any level of crocheter. The people who have gotten better at it can use the different patterns included as inspiration, while I use it as an inspiration to start.
Thank you Quatro Publishing - Chartwell Books and Netgalley for an ARC of this book in return for my honest opinion.
This book is a fantastic resource for different levels of crotcheters. I am a complete beginner who hopes to begin making a few simple squares and eventually a throw blanket or two. I have confidence that this book will help me to get started and continue to be a fantastic guide throughout my journey. There are plenty of move advanced stitches for the future if I progress well.
The stitches are shown with really well explained pictures guides. The book is laid out in an easy to understand manner.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This book was different from the other crochet books I have read. Typically a crochet book would give instructions on several different stitches and then have detailed instructions on crochet projects (blankets, hats, toys). As referenced on the book cover, this book did not have any full project ideas.
This book focused more on the many different crochet stitches. It would be a great resource for an advanced crocheter. There were ten pages of what they called “stitch selector”. The stitch selector had full-color swatches of different stitches with a page number next to it so you could find the stitch to read the patterns for the stitches. It would be helpful to understand the crochet abbreviations for understanding the stitch patterns.
One negative aspect of this book is the yarn colors they choose. It would have been easier to see the definition of the stitches if they used more contrasting colors.
I received this galley from NetGalley.
I am the proverbial part-time crocheter. And every year, come winter, I feel I have to learn the craft all over again. And I loved having this book this year. It saved a lot of trawling the net for demos etc and suffice to say this book is like my crochet bible and I don't ever want to part with it.
Easy to follow and understand I would highly recommend this to crocheters, beginners and intermediate alike. If someone bought me this as a present I would be over the moon.
An excellent guide and well worth having.
I reviewed this via netgalley and this would be an easy goto recommendation for people wanting an easy to follow and informative book on crochet.
This was really informative and easy to understand, and I would recommend it for anyone interested in learning how to crochet and those who would like to develop their skills.

This is a fantastic learn to crochet/comprehensive stitch dictionary packed with information. The layout it beautiful, starting with an overview of the basics and then moving on to a wonderful color coded stitch dictionary, At the beginning of the stitch dictionary portion there is a "stitch selector" that shows little thumbnail pictures of each stitch so you can easily find what you're looking for. The swatches for each stitch type are crocheted in varied shades of the same color. Stitch types include basic, textured, fans and shells, mesh and filet, openwork and lace, trims and edgings, clusters, puffs and bobbles, tunisian stitches, multi color patterns, squares, shapes and motifs and special stitches. It's a jam packed resource that i highly recommend. I received an advance reader copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
A good reference book for those who crochet and who are looking to adapt existing patterns with different stitch patterns.
My main gripe is athat although the reference section is excellent, it is all american terminology. The book does say that there is a glossery along with a section named Abbreviations and Symbols but the advance copy sent does not contain these section and finishes at page 248. I hope that in the full copy there is an appendice that covers the conversion from USA terminoogy to UK terms.
What a brilliant and informative book. I loved the format. It is so good to see all the stitches laid out like that so you can identify and choose the ones that appeal to you. The instructions are easy to follow and the book would make a brilliant reference addition to anyone's library. Great book thank you
4 Stars!! This is the most informative book for crochet I have ever read! I’m a total beginner & this book has taught me quite a bit. The pictures/drawings were so helpful!!! That being said, I still can’t do it!! I’m so frustrated!! I don’t think I have the patients required to crochet! If I had an actual book & not the ebook version, I would have thrown it across the room! Haha! I can’t stand not being able to do something right on my first try!(or in this case, the 100th try! I might need an actual person to get me started.) Very helpful book & I definitely recommend it for anyone trying to learn to crochet!
*I received this book at no charge from the publisher.*
This is a handy reference book to have. It has an overall layout that starts from beginner and progresses to more difficult stitches. It is not a pattern book, but various stitches that can be used for a multitude of projects. It is strictly a reference guide that can be used to find that perfect stitch to use for a project or to learn something new.
I liked the book but there were a couple of drawbacks. The biggest problem is that this book only references the stitch names as they are referred to in the United States. I happen to live here so that is fine with me, but it is more commonplace to give the UK equivalent as well. By leaving those out, you effectively cut Europe out of your book!
The second drawback is the photographs. The amount of them was good and it gives you an understanding at each step of a particular stitch. The problem is the color choice of the yarn to use. It seemed to have a sheen on it and at times made it difficult to see what they were wanting you to realize. I think if a different color would have been utilized, it would have made it a tad easier on the eyes to distinguish the stitches.
All in all, I feel it is a good reference book to have at your disposal.
