Wow! Lisa Gardner does it again. D.D. & Flora never disappoint and Never Tell was no different. To me D.D. Warren books are always addicting and I know the minute I start one I am not going to want to put it down until I am done.
In this particular book D.D. is tackling the case of Evie who is found with a gun in her hand and her husband dead in front of her. Evie is known to D.D. for accidentally shooting her father when she was younger. But, everything may not be as it seems in this case. Her husband is dead and the computer in front of him has been shot 12 times. What was she trying to hide? D.D. and our favorite vigilante Flora tackle the case and find that everything is not as it seems to be in Evie's world. Where will this investigation lead them and what will they learn about Evie, her husband, and the past shooting of her father.
This book will have you sitting on the edge of your chair gasping to find out what is going to happen. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes police procedural and suspense because it provides an excellent dose of both!
Holy Moly!!! I loved this book!!! I could not put down!!! I can not wait for the release so I can buy! I NEED the physical copy ASAP!! Best book of 2019!
Lisa Gardner is at the top of her game. She never fails to disappoint. Her newest book contains several badass women - Flora Dane, Kimberly Quincy, new character Evie, and D.D. Warren herself - and their stories are fast-paced, action-packed, and not to be missed. It was a quick read for me - I could not read it fast enough. More Flora, please!!
I am a fan of Lisa Gardner's D.D. Warren novels, they are always chuck full of mystery, suspense and twists that will give you whiplash!
Evie has everything, the perfect husband and is pregnant with their first child! But Evie has a past that is making her number one suspect for killing her "perfect" husband! D.D. Warren has to uncover who the murder is and why was this man killed!
One Click Never Tell today! Trust me you will not regret it!
I find ready Lisa Gardner novels almost therapeutic, in a disturbing way. I sit and read for hours, submersed in a world not my own full of threats and suspense, only to exit, slightly breathless at the end back to my mundane life. Never a boring book, this newest addition does not disappoint.
This is a typical D.D. Warren novel. Suspense, mystery, killing. I actually figured it out a few chapters before D.D. and everyone else who done it but I have read every D.D. Warren book. This was a very enjoyable read as are the other D.D. Warren books. Evie is a young wife expecting her first child with her amazing husband. Her life should be great but it's not. See Evie was accused of killing her father as a teen and now her husband has been shot to death. Guess who is the number one suspect? Now Evie has to prove her innocence while trying to unravel the mysteries around her father's death. Detective D.D. Warren has a doozy on her hands with this one and enters our friend Flora Dane. Flora recognizes Evie's husband from her days as a kidnap victim.
Lisa Gardner writes each chapter from the point of view of either Evie, D.D., and Flora and all of them intertwine with one another. The transition from one point of view to the other is done seamlessly and without any confusion on how they connect.
The first chapter draws you into the story making you want more by starting it with a murder. The story evolves from a simple murder to a more complex one with many twists and turns. The story focuses both on the present and on the past and Lisa Gardner does a wonderful job in making sure that you will not see how the present murder and the past murder are connected.
Lisa Gardner writes a mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat while you continue to try to guess whats coming next. She does a splendid job in making sure that you do not see what's coming.
I liked the writing and the characters. I enjoy Lisa Gardner's books and the fact that you can pick up one in a series and not be lost if you haven't read the previous stories. For some reason, I couldn't bring myself to finish this one. I got to about half way and just didn't want to. I felt like I could do without finding out the end. I know that sounds weird, but I was just done with it and wanted to move on to another story. This may be one that I will continue at a later date, but for now, I just lost interest.
I would like to thanks NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
Lisa Gardner's Never Tell brings D.D. Warren and Flora Dane back together in a powerful mystery that kept me glued to the pages. The story is told in three voices: D.D., Flora, and Evie Carter.
Evie Carter's husband is shot three times at his desk. Evie takes the gun and shoots his computer twelve times just as the police arrive.
When D.D. is notified, her interest is amplified because 16 years ago, Evie killed her father. That death was ruled accidental. D.D. vividly remembers this case and how sixteen-year-old Evie behaved at the time. Now D.D. has to wonder whether the death of Evie's father was really accidental.
When Flora sees the news and recognizes the photo of Conrad Carter as a man who met with Jacob Ness, Flora's kidnapper, she is stunned. (There is a lot of back story on how D.D. and Flora met and how Flora became a vigilante and D.D.'s confidential informant. Flora's first appearance in this series begins with Find Her.)
Evie, who has been subject to suspicion and media scrutiny for years, tries to figure out what happened to her marriage and to her life. The answers are surprising, and Gardner carefully introduces them while still keeping the reader in suspense.
Gardner's introduction of Flora Dane into an established series was a brilliant move. In Never Tell, she introduces two new characters that will give her a broader range of stories to tell. Evie's character has enough depth to make it possible she may appear again in future works and the computer geek and crime buff Keith Edgar will provide another aspect to future works.
Never Tell is an excellent, well-plotted, and fascinating addition to the series. I had to slow myself down with this one--it moves quickly and skillfully from one voice to another, but without leaving each chapter as a cliffhanger. I finished each chapter ready to switch to a new perspective, not frustrated at being cut off in the middle of a story.
If you've already been involved with these characters, you will love this one. If not, it functions well as a standalone, but you might want to go back to Find Her to get all of the background on Flora Dane.
Recommended.

Never Tell is the latest suspenseful thriller in Lisa Gardner's series featuring Detective D.D. Warren. What I love about Gardner's books in particular is their ability to be read as standalones, making them ideal selections for book clubs. Never Tell brings back Flora Dane (former kidnapping victim, turned advocate) featured in book eight in the series, along with newcomer Evie Carter. Evie arrives home from work to discover her husband has been shot and knows given her history, she will be at the top of the suspect list. Sixteen years earlier, Evie was accused of killing her husband. D.D. still has doubts even though it was deemed an accident. The story also pulls from Flora's past as she recognizes the victim as someone potentially tied to her former kidnapper. The plot is expertly paced and contains plenty of twists and turns to keep the story moving. Gardner is an expert at weaving together seemingly unconnected paths into one heart pounding ending.
Gardner’s latest is the tenth installment in the series, but it can easily be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel.
A man is murdered in his home, and his wife Evie is found holding the smoking gun. It appears to be an easy case. Sergeant D.D. Warren recognizes the woman from an earlier case, when Evie was accused of shooting her father. It now appears she’s killed her husband. Are the cases connected?
For readers of the series, they will recognize some familiar characters. The story is told in multiple POVs. Details are revealed in a way to keep the reader guessing as the clues unfold for the characters. I will likely go back and read others in the series as I wait for the next installment.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley, but I wasn’t required to leave a positive review.
I cleared my schedule so I could read this in one sitting, but I was enjoying it so much I made it last. I really didn’t want it to end.
Another fantastic thriller from Lisa Gardner, you will find yourself in the company once again of Detective D.D. Warren and Flora Dane. Don’t worry if you haven’t read the previous books in the series, as the author does a great job of bringing you up to speed. (Side note- go read them when you finish, they are all terrific)
This latest addition to the series does not disappoint. Just when I thought I knew what was happening, there were more twists and turns, right up until the end.
A true page turner, with a suspenseful storyline until the very end.
If you are a Lisa Gardner fan, I highly recommend Never Tell. This is a great book for fans of her Detective DD Warren series (which this book falls into), as well as her Quincey/Rainey series - as there are nods to characters from that series as well. There are also characters from previous DD Warren books, too. For those that haven't read either series, that's okay - this book could also serve as a stand-alone, as it gives enough background information. However, there are spoilers from previous books in the series.
Anyways, this book begins with Evie Carter walking into her house and discovering her husband dead - and her picking up the shotgun and beginning to shoot his computer, as the police arrive. Immediately, she is arrested for his murder - as she is literally holding the smoking gun. This book intertwines Evie's story, past and present, as Detective DD Warren, the lead detective on the scene, recognizes Evie from a case she worked 16 years ago - the death of Evie's father. And Evie has a secret she has been keeping for half her life related to that.
This book also centers on Flora, DD's "Confidential Informant," who we have met in previous books, as well. Flora is trying to get over a trauma of her own, and is working hard on framing herself as a survivor. I thought the growth we saw in Flora throughout this book was brilliant - I think Lisa Gardner really does her research is is able to get into the mind of someone who survives a trauma or tragedy. For Flora, it really is a two-step forward, three-steps back process. I look forward to (hopefully) watching Flora's story evolve more in future DD Warren books!
I truly couldn't put this book down - there were twists and turns, things I predicted, and things I did not predict. There were a couple pieces that I think actually wrapped up a little too nicely - but I think that is typical of most books.
For fans of Lisa Gardner - this is.a MUST READ! I give it 4.5/5 stars!
*I was provided a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review*
Thank you netgalley for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review/opinion. The description, where there's layers was perfect. This book was a fast read because it was fabulously pieced together. Definitely interested in this author.
In her tenth full-length novel featuring Detective D.D. Warren, author Lisa Gardner immerses her readers in a fast-paced and twisty mystery involving a man fatally shot in his home. D.D. is no stranger to crimes like these, but what sets this particular homicide apart from the many others she's worked on is the fact that the victim's laptop computer had been shot a total of twelve times. Evie Carter was married to the deceased, and when police arrive on the scene, she's found holding the gun. What possible reason could Evie have for killing her husband and then turning her fire on the computer?
D.D. has a long and complicated history with Evie. Years before, Evie's father was the victim of a fatal shooting that was eventually ruled an accident, but D.D. has never forgotten Evie and has never completely come to terms with the way that particular case was put to rest. She's always had questions about the woman, and now, she just might get the chance to have them answered once and for all.
Also investigating the crime is Flora Dane, a survivor of a horrific kidnapping who has turned her attention to helping other survivors of violent crimes pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. It seems that Evie's dead husband might have a long-buried link to Flora's own past, and she's determined to uncover the truth.
Reviewers Shannon Dyer and Maggie Boyd sat down to discuss Never Tell, and are here to share their thoughts on the novel.
Shannon: I'm a long-time fan of Ms. Gardner's writing in general and her D.D. Warren books in particular. I find this series to be one of the most consistently well-done group of books I've come across in a while. How do you feel about the series as a whole?
Maggie: I love the D.D. Warren series and typically find the books completely mesmerizing and delightfully chilling.
Shannon: We've seen D.D. undergo a great deal of personal growth as the series has progressed. She doesn't always handle change gracefully, but she manages to get the job done. How did you feel about D.D.'s hands-approach to this investigation even though she was supposed to be taking a more supervisory role?
Maggie: I never expected D.D. to truly become a supervisor and always anticipated her having a hands-on approach, so this worked perfectly for me. D.D.’s personality is very direct and action/results oriented, so I can’t see her doing things any other way.
Shannon: I enjoy the glimpses we get into D.D.'s home life. I love watching her spend time with Jack and Alex, but I know some readers have been a little disappointed to see so much of her softer side. How do you feel about this side of D.D.'s nature?
Maggie: I think the author is doing an excellent job of managing this. There is bound to be an overlap between our work and home lives since they affect each other, so it’s good to see that aspect of D.D.. I honestly don’t think the D.D. before Alex and Jack would have worked well with Flora Dane. On the other hand, this series is very much a police procedural, so too much of the home life would change the nature of the series. IMO, the author has a perfect combination going right now.
Shannon: Let's talk a bit about Flora Dane. Her character intrigued me from the very first time I met her In Find Me, and my strange infatuation with her has only grown in subsequent books. There's a certain raw vulnerability that peeks through her super tough exterior that I find kind of endearing. What are your thoughts on Flora?
Maggie: I adored Flora when I met her in Find Me and have been enthralled by her journey back into ‘normal’ life. That said, I was conflicted by her inclusion in this tale and felt very uncomfortable with the Jacob Ness expert that she connected with towards the end. I couldn’t imagine that person ever seeing her as something more than the survivor of a particularly nasty monster and so felt uncomfortable with that relationship.
Shannon: That's a good point. That relationship thread was a bit on the odd side.
I don't want to focus too much on Evie, since that could lead to spoilers, but how did you feel about her in general? Was she a character you could relate to?
Maggie: I think many women would be able to relate to the mother/daughter dynamic Evie had with her parent, but I was flummoxed by her marriage. That she and her husband confided so little in each other made me wonder what glue was holding the relationship together. She was also just not a very compelling character; she was basically a guest appearance in her own life. She didn’t even qualify as co-star in the investigation since her lawyer, mother, D.D., Flora and a host of others outshone her.
Shannon: That's pretty much how I felt about her as well. She provided a bit of a diversion from some of the heavy investigative work going on in the story, and some readers might find that refreshing. However, I would have liked her more if she had taken a more front-and-center role in her life, rather than sitting back and just sort of observing.
Let's talk about the mystery aspect of the novel. I wasn't as gripped by this case as I have been by previous cases D.D. has worked on. I was able to figure out where the plot was headed pretty early on, and that disappointed me a little bit. Still, I enjoyed watching D.D. and Flora figure out what I already knew, so I can't in good conscience count this as a loss. What about you?
Maggie: I definitely guessed key points early on in the story, which kept me from getting completely caught up in this novel. I think one of the big problems with the plot was the Jacob Ness tie-in that Flora brought to the story. That aspect of the tale loomed much larger than the simple case of whether or not Evie killed her husband and whether or not she was justified in doing so.
Shannon: What's your final grade? I'm going with a B since I wasn't as wowed by the mystery as I was hoping I'd be, but the book is still a solid addition to the series.
Maggie: My final grade is also a B. This story felt too distracted, like it couldn’t decide if it was about Evie or about an additional investigation into Jacob Ness. It was a good book, a solid series addition but I could never recommend it on its own merits. It simply wouldn’t appeal to people who aren’t already fans of the characters.

I always love a Lisa Gardner book. NEVER TELL did not disappoint. It left me guessing and made me want to keep turning pages. I love the way Gardner writes! I will definitely be purchasing this book for the library because I have a big group of Gardner fans!
Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for letting me review a advance copy of this book.
Lisa Gardner's Detective D.D. Warren series is back with her latest Never Tell. A enjoyable quick read with a lot of previous characters including my favorite vigilante Flora Dane. 5 stars and highly recommended.
This book was outstanding and I could not stop reading it!!!! D.D. Warren is back with Flora (you need to read "Find Her" in my opinion to truly appreciate her background and the dynamic she adds to this story) and pregnant Evie, who's husband has been gunned down- perhaps by Evie herself. And this isn't Evie's first time being caught at the crime scene GUN IN HAND. Say what? No spoilers here but if you like suspenseful thrillers, this is the book for you!! Lisa Gardner is always a homerun type of author and I can't wait to see what comes next in this series!!
HUGE THANKS to NetGalley, Penguin Random House, and of course Lisa Gardner for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars Shots are fired and when the police arrive they find a dead man with his pregnant wife holding a gun. She is immediately arrested. She swears she didn’t shoot her husband, she only shut off his computer. Sergeant DD Warren is on the case. She knows the pregnant wife because she had a case years ago when the same woman’s father was found dead.
The story unravels with so many twists and turns as only Lisa Gardner can do. Totally “unputdownable”.
Amazing book!
This story follws three main characters.
1. Evie daughter of a highly intelligent man who was shot and killed 13 years prior , Evie has just been accused of shooting and killing her husband .
2. D.D. Married woman detective the same one who investigated the crime when Eveis father was shot, is now investigating the case where Eveis husband's been shot.
3. Flora is my favorite character, a survivor of kidnap and torture, she has strength that goes beyond measure.
Loved the storyline...it was so unique and surprising, lots of twists...I kept changing my mind through out the book as to who the culprit was but was surprised at the end.
