Amelia Howard cherishes her desert country. The dazzling colors, white heat, and rough sensuality of west Texas stir her very soul. But there’s a serpent in her paradise: King Culhane. A towering sunburned cowboy with silver eyes that miss nothing, he’s a man she’s come to despise—no matter how much she had worshiped him when she was younger. As her father pushes her to secure a marriage proposal from King’s mild-mannered brother in order to marry into the Culhane dynasty, Amelia assumes the mask of a demure young lady, always correct and obedient. It’s a posture that King holds in contempt. Yet when she reveals the true force of her feelings, she unleashes a smoldering passion that cannot be denied. And everything—propriety, filial duty, even love—will be scorched in the wake of such all-consuming desire.
I’ve been wanting to read Diana Palmer for a while so I was excited to get this book. Unfortunately, my excitement didn’t really last long. The book was well written, but it was Amelia I had a problem with. She was written in a way that got on my nerves. When I looked more into it, I figured out why it was. This is actually a re-release from the early 90s when many women were written as if they needed to be saved. It doesn’t make it a bad book. The writing was pretty good. It just wasn’t for me.

Whenever I'm in need of reading a Mary Sue type romance I turn to Diana Palmer. Her books are well-written but getting more old fashioned and out of touch. They also seem longer than they need to be. I may have to take a long break from reading her books for a while.
Amelia's father thinks that the youngest Culhane will ask for Amelia's hand in marriage which is beneficial to him, however King Culhane the oldest son is determined not to let that happen.
This was really good but King is a jerk for the majority of the book, he does redeem himself but it takes awhile. I liked Amelia, there is a reason she is the way she is and the more you find out the stronger of character she becomes. Page turner.
I love Diana Palmer. She has such wonderful characters and her settings feel so real it's almost as if the horse and cowboys are real. If you love Westerns, and have never read Palmer, you should read this.
I love Diana Palmer, she is one of my favorite authors, and I have been reading and collecting her books since I moved to America 15 years ago, as my bookcase can attest to. And legible it seems to be a popular move from authors and publishers, to reissue some of the older books with new artwork, there are some books that that should stay in the past, and unfortunately, Amelia is one of them.
In the story, Amelia suffers such pain and abuse from her father to the man she ends up marrying, and yet all through this pain and suffering, some of which almost kills her, Amelia is sweet and kind and wants a relationship with the man who hurt her verbally.
I think in early 1993 when this book was first written, it would have been an excepted troupe, but in 2018/2019 it’s not a good fit. And though I don’t care for this book, it will not stop me from reading more Diana Palmer books in the future.
I give Amelia 1 star!
A very unusual book from Diana Palmer. I found Amelia strong but weak. Strong for remembering her fathers memories and keeping the family name respectable. Weak for allowing her fathers actions to herself. Although the in history, women in the east were not outgoing, but this was 1900. Women in the west were strong, courageous, outspoken and rugged. In the end, the book was a feel good story. I can recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington books.
Amelia by Diana Palmer is re-release. Amelia moves with her father out west to be closer to her brother and for her father to to find his fortune. Her father began to change when he hit his head and Amelia is taking care of him. The problem is to take care of him her personality has been changed. King, her brother's best friend, holds her in contempt for being meek. Wait till he meets the real Amelia.
This was an enjoyable read. I thought this was a fun read nothing life changing but still enjoyable.
4 stars for yes I recommend it and I did really like it.
I have been a devoted fan of Diana Palmer’s books for more than 30 years, and while this book was first written in 1993, the subject matter is still just as relevant today which is the beauty of historical fiction. Even though Diana’s male characters are hard headed chauvinists incapable of admitting they’re wrong, I can’t deny that I keep coming back to witness their spectacular fall from grace which gives me, and the heroine, great satisfaction. King and Amelia are enemies from the start and the simmering tension between them makes it painfully obvious that they’re totally besotted and fighting their feelings while they protect their disillusioned hearts from further destruction. The best thing about this wonderful historical fiction title is the lively, rapid fire dialogue which makes their happy ending all the more gratifying. I read a complimentary copy of this book provided by Kensington Books through NetGalley and all opinions expressed in my voluntary review are completely my own.
Amelia is a book I am still not sure about, I loved and hated it. The story line and the characters although easy to follow, were not easy to relate too. The Hero was too harsh for my liking. But it was a very romantic story about unrequited love. I didn't like the suffering Amelia and the abused she had to face.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley.
I have seen many books by Diana Palmer around through the years but have never had the chance to read one until now. I think I may have been missing out on some great stories as I just loved the writing style and wonderful characters with depth and interest. I was drawn into this story straight away and hooked to the very end. The heroine was a very strong and determined young lady that did the best she could for her family. The Hero was not a hero at first as he despised Amelia and made a point of making everyone know how he felt.
But not everything and everyone is what you first thought them to be and King soon learns there is a lot more to Amelia than the spinless person she has been of late.

This book is good! I always love when the heroine is badly hurt especially because of the Hero. Eeeep! I feel the angst! I love it so bad it made me jumpy! :)))
I don't understand why Amelia's stuck with King when he did nothing but humiliating her. He practically hurting her yet she's still madly in love. If I were her, I'm so gonna slap his face. But then again, love's indeed blind.
Nailed it, as usual, Diana Palmer! I want to read more about Quinn and Maria though.
Thank you NetGalley for the copy of Amelia by Diana Palmer that I read and reviewed.
This book is a reprint of a book that has been out for a number of years but it is a classic Diana Palmer that made her the great author that she is today. I can honestly say that I am not big fan of older western themed books but once you get into this story you forget the era the book is written in until she mentions riding horses instead of driving cars and how women are treated so differently then they are in books today.
As for the book I really enjoyed it. I loved Amelia's dedication to her father even though he was really mean to her and I loved how she hid her spunk from King and shocked him when he found out how she really was. This was a true Diana Palmer work that is her signature writing.
I am giving Amelia five out of five stars.
This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.
I just cannot understand all the five stars and wonderful review of this sory. I feel that I was generous giving it three stars as I had a real hard time getting past all the verbal abuse from King. But what really made me less than happy with this story was that King felt like he "seduced" Amelia but she two times told him "No, stop" and he dept going. In my opinion, when a woman says stop and the man does not - that is rape.
There were no fond feelings after the sex as Amelia feels used and her body is sore. Even worse, after he makes sure to tell her father that she was acting like a loose woman (when she was NOT), he only feels remorse for a short time before he goes back to being verbally abuse to Amelia.
I was also sick of watching Amelia continue to love King when he time after time was so cruel to her. It was like she had no self respect and took whatever he dished out.
Unfortunately, I was more interested in the side story of Quinn and Maria, but that isn't a much better story when Quinn sleeps with a sixteen year old virgin thinking she is a prostitute. Kind of an "ick" factor for me with her being so young.
I do realize that this was a different period of time when women were not able to be independent so I can see how Amelia tried to keep her father happy so she had a place to live, and I can even give her credit for still loving her father and trying to make the best of a horrific situation. And maybe that is why sleeping with a sixteen year was ok back then and abuse was tolerated but I just don't like reading that in a romance!
A Dangerous Thing Called LOVE!!!
This is one of Diana Palmers older stories. Originally released back in 1993. Amelia takes place in early 1900, the Desert Country of West Texas. Going back to reminisce on my younger years of reading a romance novel. I remembered this book as being good back then. But now that I am older, I can see all the faults with this story.
Amelia was a kind and yet timid. Whose life was being terrorized by her father; I know there isn’t a true reason why someone wants to abuse a female, whether it be physical or mentally. But Diana Palmer surely tries. The explanation on how and why her dad went sadistic. I actually; felt sorry for him at the end. So, I decided to give him a pass. However, the hero of this piece…was a real asshat from beginning to end.
King Culhane has the looks and he has power. But, other than that…he was a total loser. I never read a romance, where the hero had no redeeming qualities. I felt cheated by this book. The history was there to amaze us readers, but the romance was just not there. Maybe if this story was a few chapters longer, whereby I can see King trying to make amends…. Yet, again we readers are left with what we did receive, the heroine thinking she deserves less than she’s really entitled too.
I am not a fan of this one. The way the hero, King, treats the heroine, Amelia, ruins the whole story for me. Poor Amelia has nothing going for her. A father that treats her like property and now King that treats her even worse. Also, the way the story jumps back and forth between Amelia's story and her brother's is frustrating and confusing. Not an enjoyable read for me at all.
A western romance that will sweep you off your feet! My heart several times while reading this book - I thought I'd get a chapter in and then be able to stop for the night...nope. I found myself up until 2am, finally giving in to my eyes watering at 87% and immediately picked it back up the next morning.
The relationship between Amelia and her father is strained, but she keeps it under wraps, so nobody else knows her pain. I loved the interactions between her and the Culhane brothers as well. King is the sort of man you love to hate, and boy do you through most of the story. A wonderful tale of not judging a book by its cover!
She's been on a razor's edge for years, showing a biddable, calm and obedient persona. The man she's loved since 14, thinks that is what she really like and hates her. His past experience with love didn't go so well and it taints his relationships with women. Will they see behind the face that they show the world or will her secret and his past come between them?
Amelia Howard and her father have recently moved to El Paso to be near her Texas Ranger brother. Her father is also hoping that a match will be made between Amelia and the youngest Culhane brother. That won't happen because she's been in love with the eldest brother Jeremiah aka King since she was 14. Amelia shows the world a person she had to become because of the recent tragedies in her life and the effect they had on her father. The two of them have spent the last couple of weeks at the Culhane ranch Latigo while her father goes hunting. Amelia is extra vigilant about her reactions while there. King hates her which she can live with but what hurts her most is his relationship with a neighbor's daughter. King doesn't believe his family when they tell him there is more to Amelia than what he sees. His past is also clouding his perception of her and thinks she's like all the women he knows and is only after money. As she and his youngest brother become closer it drives him wild with jealousy and he warns her away from him. His brother she's the intense attraction between the two and decides to play matchmaker. He's also learned a little about Amelia's home situation. When her father becomes ill a doctor is sent for and a diagnosis and warning are given. King and Amelia share some very passionate kisses that scare them both. It has her not wanting to be around King. He's a surprise when Amelia comes for a Sunday after church lunch. When they're left alone the passion overwhelms them and is taken too far. She's humiliated and his guilt causes him to lash out at her. Amelia's father comes home furious after a visit form King. A confrontation between brothers has them racing to the Howard's house. King is racked with guilt for what they find and realizes what his feelings for Amelia really are but now knows that she'll hate him. The doctor recommends a plan to protect her and the father. Amelia is able to show her true personality. King likes what he sees. He demands that they marry to save her reputation. She doesn't want to because she knows he doesn't love her, but agrees. On their wedding day her brother comes with news about King's past, that sends him running off. Amelia realizes that he wasn't falling in love with her and decides to leave and go live with a relative, taking a secret with her. She leaves the ranch and goes to El Paso. Her meal is interrupted when a scraggly looking King comes to take her home. Amelia's anger shows, a stop reveals their real feelings. A wedding night is had and a secret revealed. King helps his brother-in-law with his love life. The Culhanes return to an eventful week and a brother takes another direction.
A box of Kleenex should be at hand when you read Amelia. I was crying through out the book. I could feel their heartbreak and pain so well. Diana Palmer writes a book you can't put down. Honestly, I read have the book and didn't want to stop to go to bed. And was eager to start reading again the next day. I can never get enough of Diana Palmer's cowboys and their ladies whether in modern or historical times.
Lovely Amelia Howard loves her home in the desert country of west Texas. There’s only one blemish in her world and that’s King Culhane whose dynasty is large and her father desires to be part of through marriage. Not to King, no. As much as Amelia admired him as a younger girl, he’s become a silver-eyed devil of a cowboy who she’d happily never see again. No, her father wants to arrange a marriage between her and King’s brother, a man with a milder-temperament. She hopes that perhaps the brother will be a man she can have a content marriage with.
Amelia tries to conduct herself as an obedient, demure lady to make this happen. Her efforts only draw the ire of King. When he finds out what’s behind her mask, that she’s not the timid young woman she’s put forward, will he allow the marriage to continue? Or will he claim her for himself, propriety and duty be damned?
Diana Palmer is a talented author and I’ve read many of her stories over the years. Amelia presents a storyline I’ve always enjoyed where the hero and heroine seem to despise each other at first and by the story’s end, nothing can keep them apart. Ms. Palmer did a great job penning this particular tale and all the right elements for this type of story were there. I’d like to have seen the hero be a little less abrasive and unlikeable for a large portion of the book and I’d like to have seen a little more fire from the heroine, even within the constraints of her disguise. Did I like them both and care about their endings? Very much.
That aside the setting, the secondary characters, pacing, and dialogue were all spot on and it was an enjoyable read for a cold winter’s weekend. Fans of historical stories and cowboys are sure to enjoy Amelia.
Once again Diana Palmer transported to another world with her beloved Amelia. This story takes place in the early 1900’s. When the border between Texas and Mexico were open. I finished this book in two days. I couldn’t put it down. I admit I was doing some serious crying but don’t worry it has a Happy ending. You will fall in love with Amelia and her story. Well worth the read.
I really liked this book by Diana Palmer. It is the second time I read it, once when it came out many years ago, and I liked it just as much now as I did then.
Amelia looks after her father who has not been doing well at all, and before this, she nursed her mother for years until she died. Now her brother is a Texas Ranger and things are happening that Amelia can't stop from happening with her father, and she has been both physically and mentally abused.
They go to visit a friend of her brothers, the Culhane family, and there Amelia runs into King the oldest son. Although King remembers little about her when she was younger, he thinks by Amelia's quiet and always obedient and correct attitude and her letting her father treat her rudely, that she is weak minded.
Not everything is as it seems however and King learns this the hard way, especially to Amelia's detriment.
I liked this book and the fast pace, to keep the book very enjoyable. I liked the way it is written and how Diana Palmer's books are always a great way to spend time reading! I gave this book 5 stars!
