I would recommend this book to anyone interested in spy books and espionage. It is a story of cat and mouse that keeps the reader guessing. Kit, an author of spy stories, is recruited to find an elusive woman and give her some information. He falls into a world that he knows through research for his books, but soon finds himself in compromising situations. The story unfolds as he tries to find Lara, then tries to save her life.

The first half of the book was slow and I lost interest a few times, but I hung in there and it got better. The author kept you guessing about the alliances of the characters, which maintained a sense of intrigue. I was hoping for more action and suspense and there were scenes in the book that were never fully understood. It seems they were created to make you question whether someone was “good” or “bad.,” but I wanted to know who the yacht owner was talking to on his phone! All in all, it was a good read. This review was provided in advance of publication. Thanks to NetGalley, Mr. Cumming, and the publisher! #themoroccangirl

Thank you to net galley, Saint Martin’s press, and Charles Cumming for this ARC. I really love this book. I don’t usually read spy thrillers but this one seem to get my attention. I was never bored with the story, and I was so totally confused , good guy, bad guy, but that’s a good thing,! As it kept me intrigued and interested. Sometimes these spy thrillers can be so boring, but this one was definitely not. I love the characters And the vulnerability especially of Kit. To be an author and find yourself in that world seeing how many mistakes you’ve made in your books and how many things you’ve done right in your books as far as espionage, was an excellent idea on the part of the author. I definitely gave it five stars. I am now more interested in the spy thrillers thanks to this author and I am definitely going to read more of his works. My reviews can be found on Amazon, good reads, Twitter, Instagram, and reviews for my local bookstore.

While I liked it - I didn't love it. Found it a bit slow - but then it would take a twist and keep me interested! Would recommend.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing an ARC of this book in return for a fair and honest review.

I enjoyed this book. Despite the presence of cell phones and flash drives and the occasional topical reference, it had the feel of an old fashioned spy thriller, with a somewhat innocent and idealistic protagonist caught up in a situation beyond his control, and beyond his expectations of what he was getting into.

The characters were interesting, and there was a real effort to make them more complex than just "good guys and bad guys." It was a good read, not profound, but certainly entertaining.

i found this to be an enjoyable story with good characters. I received a copy from NetGalley and the publisher and this is my honest opinion.

I picked this book because of the beautiful cover, because I love Marrakech, and I found the blurb interesting. Unfortunately, halfway through and after many tries, I have to put it down again, this time for good, the story simply doesn’t work for me. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advance copy.

I had a little trouble getting into The Moroccan Girl. I found the beginning, and Kit, to be a little boring and a little slow. It did pick up though and I found the story to be pretty good overall.

The Moroccan Girl, by Charles Cumming, has an exciting premise, a pretty cover, and the promise of an exotic location. I envisioned John le Carre meets The Man Who Knew Too Much.

The book started with promise, but I eventually lost interest. The crux of the problem with this book was how the main character, Kit Carradine, came to understand what was going on in the espionage schemes - other characters simply told him. He never put the pieces together or learned of double crossing agents and foreign operatives through clever clues dropped for him and the reader. Rather, he asked other characters about their affiliations and motivations, and they told him. This makes for a pretty lackluster spy novel.

Also at issue was the character development of Carradine (an author who fancies himself a spy, is completely incompetent at it, and somehow manages to always gain praise) and Lara (whom we are supposed to believe is so desirable that people will die to protect her, but really just spends most of her time smirking). Cumming confusingly and inexplicably refers to some characters by their first names and some by their last names, and then occasionally switches it up so as to confuse the reader.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The storyline in this [alleged] spy novel is so ridiculous that I kept thinking it was going to turn into a spoof. The setting and the ridiculousness of it was perfect, but what a surprise that it was supposed to be a serious spy novel.

I see that it was first published about 9 months earlier under the name, “The Man Between.” It needed more than a new title.

This was my first book by Charles Cumming. I don’t plan to look for others.

I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I liked the style of this novel. You have the Moroccan girl telling the story to intelligence sources while at the same time the story itself is unfolding.

The book itself is intriguing as a real life writer of thrillers is enticed into becoming a real life character. You are constantly trying to determine who are the good guys and what is really going on.

A little romance is always good as well. The ending is a twist and I like that. Add to that the setting if Morocco and you have a winner.

The Moroccan Girl did remind me of Casablanca. In this way, it's a charming atmospheric story. I enjoy nostalgic reads. A spy and a beautiful woman are always engaging and adventurous. It's an overall good read.

This tries very hard to be atmospheric in a modern-day-Casablanca vibe but for me it felt quite choppy.

Although I enjoyed this book and read it quickly, I was not particularly moved by it. The story is about a spy novel writer becoming a spy in the real world and a very alluring and dangerous woman. Some might find it nostalgic, but at the same time, I found it rather predictable. Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC!

The Moroccan Girl by Charles Cumming
Kit Carradine is an author, a financial and literarily successful author as opposed to the bulk of us. He writes spy thrillers and is moderately happy until he isn’t. He finds the lure of service to the Queen irresistible when approached about a mission.
Kit discovers that living what he writes about is not exactly the bowl of cherries that he expected. A liberal terrorist organization, the Russians, the CIA and Mi5/6 who knows who else are part of Kit’s indoctrination into the word of international intrigue.
As he struggles in unfamiliar waters, Kit finds many of the things he has included in his books are wrong and some are surprisingly right.
The book has an intricate and complex plot, I enjoyed it

I chose this book because I love Morocco and not much is set there. However, the book itself was not that great. The characters were not compelling and the plot was disjointed. The galley formatting was a problem on the Kindle but it did not contribute to my lack of interest in the characters.

While I really wanted to like this, it kind of fell short of my expectations! Over all, the plot was fairly good, but it wasn't a page turner, and it took me a long time to get through it. I was easily confused and found myself repeating pages to determine if I had missed something.

Because this was a pre-publication e-Galley, it was not yet refined. There were spacing and punctuation errors that, at times, made for very difficult reading. The novel itself, however, was excellent. A British spy novelist is recruited to go to Morocco for a writers’ workshop and while there to attempt to locate a Hungarian woman and pass some material to her. He is of the belief that he is doing this for the British. The story evolves into a series of twists and turns that would make anyone paranoid coupled with his involvement with the woman and her history. All in all great reading for those who like this genre. Thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for the e-Galley for an honest review.

I chose this book because of the setting, as I studied abroad in Morocco in college .While the book didn't deliver as much on setting as I had hoped, I was roped in immediately to the plot. Kit is not a character I will soon forget.
