Dear Lora Leigh & Veronica Chadwick,
I haven’t read any Lora Leigh books for a long time but I remember the sex was always pretty darn hot and the blurb of One Tough Cowboy appealed to me so I requested it from NetGalley. Well, most of the sex was pretty hot so I didn’t misremember but not much else about the book worked for me unfortunately.
The story takes place over a ridiculously short amount of time. When Samantha’s aunt is murdered (even though the Coroner has ruled it suicide, both she and the sheriff know it was not) she returns to Deerhaven, the small town in California where she lived the first 11 years of her life, to see to her aunt’s estate and to find the person responsible.
Sheriff Hunter Steele is eight years older than Samantha and when she was a child, he protected her from bullies and became her hero. She was a girl who was always getting into scrapes and took great delight in playing pranks on his girlfriends (like putting frogs on their heads) and Hunter called her his “Pixie Pest”. They ran into each other once when she was 17 and Hunter realised that Samantha was growing up to be a knockout.
However, it is not until the death of Aunt Dottie that they spend any time together after she’s an adult.

Wow! What a hot read this was! This was by far the best book I have read by this author, and I love all her books! It was wonderfully angsty and naughty too, just what I’ve come to expect and love from Ms. Leigh. Straight to my favorites shelf! Well done!
Moving Violations have never been so hot and sexy as they are in this blistering new romance. Samantha and Hunter are two strong, vivid characters that easily pull readers into their story where they can feel the sizzle as the chemistry sets off fireworks and the passions blazes out of control. Misunderstandings and lack of communication has kept this couple apart for years and now that they are forced into close proximity, things are heating up fast and causing lots of emotional turmoil that readers can’t help but become caught in the turbulence as they fight their attraction for all the wrong reasons.
The story is fast paced and flows smoothly throughout with lots of suspenseful events, intense emotions that adds depth to those events and the thrilling, breath holding expectation of danger. The tension and suspense builds keeping readers glued to the edge of their seats and surprising readers with unexpected twists and turns. There were a couple areas that could be better explained but for the most part this romance was one hot and entertaining read and I am looking forward to receiving more moving violations.

This is my first read by this duo. The blurb sounded really go, but the story was dragging tremendously by this point. I didn't feel a connection between Sam and Hunter and I felt we had too many hot scenes thrown in the story already that there wasn't a point to them. To me they HAVE to make sense. I just couldn't continue to get to the very end.
I'm always a little worried when I read a book written by two authors. As I read them I can't help thinking to my self, who wrote what? Sometimes it's there in your face and you can almost pick out who wrote what. Then other times you wonder if only one author truly did all the writing because it's so seamlessly done.
One Tough Cowboy is written that way. You have no clue who wrote what. It's all just goes together. I will admit that I've never read a solo book by Chadwick so I don't really know her style, but I have read plenty and know Leigh's.
For me this book read more like Leigh's writing. I don't know if that's because the authors both have the same type of writing or one followed the other. All I do know is that it made for a good story.
I really enjoyed this story and was sucked into it right away. I enjoyed that you know who the bad guys were (well almost all of them) and got to spend your time wondering how they were going to go down.
You'll love both Sam and Hunter. They have history and it shows in the book. This isn't a second chance romance it's more like a finally a romance. It helped with how rushed it was they got together. It wasn't really rushed if you though about their history. The deaths are upsetting and you really feel bad for both Hunter and Sam for losing people they really cared about.
I was also happy with some of the characters we were introduced to. I can't wait to see what's coming next in this series. I think why I enjoyed this so much is because it reminded me of Leigh's Nauti series. I love that series and miss it. This has that humor along with the mystery of what's going on. There was a book by Ellora's Cave by these two that I think kinda fits into this world. How I'm not a hundred percent sure. I know I have the book somewhere around here and that I might dig it out.
LAW AND ORDER.
For as long as Samantha can remember, Hunter—a man as strong as steel, with a heart of gold—has been her hero. It came as no surprise to Samantha when she found out that the ranch-hardened cowboy who always protected her from bullies went on to become the town’s sheriff. What does surprise her is how incredibly hot he still is. And how much she still wants him…
PRIDE AND PASSION
And, lo and behold, Hunter still has feelings for Samantha. The long-smoldering heat of their innocent flirtation has grown into a full-raging fire. But when tragedy strikes, and their small-town community is shattered, Hunter vows to do everything he can to keep his childhood sweetheart safe. But can Samantha trust that Hunter has her best interests at heart…and that, after all these years, his love is true?
Review:
So, I think this is the same book as the one I read years ago, when published by a now defunct publisher, right? The names have changed, but I thought this was very familiar when I saw and read it.
This edition, if I am right is up-to-date and has a more in-depth storyline. I liked the revamped story. It is what I think of when I think of a Lora Leigh story, suspenseful, romantic and sexy as all get out. I am glad that she obviously got the rights back to her story and re released it. The only thing I have to say is, I think, though Hunter has a ranch, his main job is a sheriff, so the title is a little misleading to those looking for a "cowboy" romance.

One of my favorite sizzling authors and a cowboy taboot? Sign me up! This book has a lot of ups and downs as we go through Sam and Hunter’s relationship. There is some great suspense, some scorching passion and some witty banter. What I love is the fact that these two are both part of the law and they are trying to muddle through everything that is going on. I was left questioning some aspects but not enough to take away from the story too much. I think I just wanted something a little bit more in depth. It was lacking a little in that respect. It was overall a decent story and one that should be snagged for different read!
ONE TOUGH COWBOY
(Moving Violations: #1)
Written by Lora Leigh and Veronica Chadwick
JANUARY 29, 2019; St. Martin's Paperbacks (304 pages)
Genre: contemporary, romance, cowboy, small town, mystery, romantic suspense
RATING: 2.5 STARS
This is my first novel by Lora Leigh and Veronica Chadwick so I had expectations going into this novel. I knew that Leigh’s novels had steamy sex scenes so never really picked up one of her novels. It was this novel that I first heard of Chadwick. I like small town, cowboy romances with a little mystery so I decided to try this book. One Tough Cowboy started out great with a mystery but soon I found that the romance and sex started to take up the plot. Sex scenes are great, but I like it as an addition not the main act in the plot. I started to skim and found that even the ending couldn’t save the book for me. The characters were predictable hero and heroine but lacked the endearing quality that grabs me into the story. I am glad I tried this book, but I will not be continuing the series.

I overall enjoyed this read and the authors writing style. The main character Samantha was badass and I loved how take charge she was and how she is described as curvy. This read was also super steamy. There was a lot of sex/romantic scenes between the two main characters. If you enjoy very steamy reads this could definitely be for you.
My main issue with this book was the ending. It really brought down the rating for me. What happened/almost happened to Samantha really just seemed super rushed and didnt seem realistic with what was going on.
I would try this author again as I enjoyed her characters and writing style but I just think where this storyline went was not for me.
Oh lordy! This is differently the book for you if you are looking to be warmed up! Might want a fan nearby so you don’t get burned! One Tough Cowboy was full of suspense, intrigue, and lots of sexy times!
Samantha returns home when her aunt passes away to find her childhood crush, Hunter, is now the sheriff. Samantha and Hunter are determined to find out what really happened to her aunt, as well as figure out what other dark things are happening in the county.
Samantha is one of the feistiest heroines I’ve read in a while. The banter between her and Hunter was delicious because Hunter could give it just as well as he could take it. Hunter is certainly an alpha-hero as he is going to do whatever it takes to keep Samantha safe.
One Tough Cowboy will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next, while so making you fan yourself while reading some majorly sorching scenes!
All I can say is wow! What a great debut to the Moving Violations series with captivating characters you want to root for and a fast-paced story that kept me entertained and intrigued from beginning to end and turning the pages as fast as I could to see what would happen. I was totally mesmerized by the nail-biting, heart-pounding suspense and skin-scorching intimacy. I loved the undeniable chemistry between Sheriff Hunter Steele and Samantha Ryder, a Detroit cop who returns to her hometown of Deerhaven, California after her aunt dies unexpectedly.
This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a well-crafted, suspenseful romance. I received an advance reader copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my voluntary review. I liked the book so much, I purchased a copy for my keeper library.
One Tough Cowboy starts strong and leaves you turning pages. From the beginning you meet Samantha and Hunter, they are on different paths in life but both have one sinking suspicion about recent deaths that had been happening in the town Deerhaven.
This book brought me back to the joy of reading a new series that makes you sad when you read the last page. Making you want to fast forward and grab the next in the series instead of wait.
Mystery, romance and long lost love, if you love those you will love this book!
Spicy, suspenseful romance. Very spicy cowboy romance. Great main characters. Would have liked more of a conclusion.
One Tough Cowboy by Lora Leigh and Veronica Shadwick is the first book in the Moving Violations series and can easily be read as standalone.
Meet Hunter Steele, he's the towns Sheriff and caught up in a murder case. Three deaths in three months seems like a pattern.
Samantha is back in Deerhaven because her aunt died and she becomes tangled up in a web of secrets, lies and danger.
And to top it off, her chemistry with the towns Sheriff is through the roof high.
One Tough Cowboy is a romance with thriller elements that has everything I love in a good read. The writing is excellent, the story is captivating and I connected very easily with the characters.
I read the book in one sitting and give 4,5 stars.
I’ll be frank and say that I’m torn on ONE TOUGH COWBOY by Lora Leigh and Veronica Chadwick. Really torn. When I’m in the mood for a sexy romance I turn to Lora Leigh – I’m obsessed with her Breeds series and have re-read it several times now. Yet what I can accept in that series (because of the premise of it) feels uncomfortable to me in this story.
On the surface ONE TOUGH COWBOY is an intriguing, suspenseful romance between two strong people who have a connection from their past and their present. There is a mystery to be solved, one that grabbed my attention. It would be an interesting romance between Samantha and Hunter if the explicit sex scenes were cut in half — yes, I really did say that there is more sex in this story than anything else. Now I love a sizzling, sexy encounter as much as the next reader but there were times when having sex was just… the wrong timing, at the very least. I wish this had been a story driven, character driven romance instead of a sexual encounter driven one… in my opinion. Yet, I read what the authors have delivered and go from there.
There are possible triggers in this story for some people such as an attempted rape. Just be aware of that is all I’m saying.
I want to say that I’ll continue this series because there are secondary characters that I want to know what their story is… but I just don’t know at this moment. ONE TOUGH COWBOY is a good story, please don’t misunderstand that, I simply felt that the sex overtook the story and I wish that wasn’t the case for me. Perhaps I just need to stick to the series (Breeds) that I do enjoy and leave it at that.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
I grabbed this title thinking it would be a romantic suspense with a western/cowboy element.
What I got started out nice - Sam returns to the town where she grew up and reunites with her crush to solve a crime. After that, things kind of went off the rails for me.
This is a dual author book and it’s one that felt half done. There was minimal character development and some of the plot points seemed to come out of no where. There were several pieces of information that popped up at one point and then went away, like they were never connected to the story.
The big disappointment for me was also the way the story was set up. When I think romantic suspense, I think a plot/characters driven story with a side of sexy time. This was sexy time broken up by bits of police work with something so far fetched it didn’t really make sense.
I got the impression that each of the co authors wrote their assigned pieces of the book then they were shoved together vs working as a cohesive unit to ensure that everything flowed well together. This is disappointing because the premise of the story is one that I felt had potential.
DNF: this book was filled with poor editing, excevive sex when it was not relative as if they were just filling in the gaps. It did not flow well and I didn’t feel the two Author’s were on the same page to write this together. I’m sorry it just wasn’t well written.
I will not post this anywhere but here.
Holy hell this book moves! From car chases to orgasms, you will not be disappointed. If you like some mystery with your storyline then you've come to the right place. Sam and Hunter do not do things the normal way. From the time they were kids to their combustible chemistry as adults. Just be prepared for some uncomfortable parts as this does deal with sensitive topic and gets graphic a bit.
This book was exactly what I needed to curl up with. It was not long before I was caught up in all the suspense and drama that this story held. I have not even mentioned the hot chemistry between these two characters. Samantha had loved Hunter since she was a young girl. He was her personal hero that saved her from all the outrageous stunts she pulled to get his attention. Years later, Samantha has returned to their small town and discovered that her feelings were still as strong as before. Hunter is not immune to her charms but they both work tirelessly to fight their feelings. Silly book characters. That never works. This book was fun from the start. The story was well written and easy to follow. It had all the elements of a great story and it delivered on all points.
First off, let me say that I am a fan of Lora Leigh. Yes, she writes steamy sex scenes in her books. This one was no exception. It starts off with three suspicious deaths and Hunter (the cowboy in this, but he really is the sheriff) who is connected to one of the victims, investigating on the sly what really happened. Throw in some shady deputies, mayor and a host of other sly characters and you have the setting for a mystery. Then along comes the Pixie Pest (better known as Samantha) whose aunt was also one of the victims. Oh, did I mention that she is also a police officer in Detroit? Yes, she is. So she wants to be involved. Sparks fly, then steam comes off of them whenever they are within a few feet of each other. It's a wonder that people in the same area aren't burned by this heat.
While I liked the story, there were a few problems to me. Dearhaven, California is NOT the south. The southern accents threw me. I also wasn't sure about the title, One Tough Cowboy. I was expecting a cowboy, not a sheriff/law officer. Hunter personality wasn't what I thought a cowboy's would be. Did he own horses? Well, yes he did, but they played a very small role in the story. In fact, his ranch played a very small role.
Overall, I did enjoy the story and yest, I am curious to find out what happens with Jacob and some of the characters mentioned in the story.
I was provided an arc of this book by NetGalley to given an honest opinion.
