This book blew my mind and is still blowing it. It's a weird story, and a painful one frequently, one of learning who you can trust and figuring out the shape of a family. It's about alchemy and pursuing power and hurting people in the process. It's about second chances and math and metaphors and language and I want to go back and reread this story while making a spreadsheet or a flowchart or something so I can start picking apart the mysteries I feel like I only just began to crack.
If you like books that play with narration and time and the very nature of reality itself, you'll love this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan-Tor/Forge for the E-arc copy of this novel.
Where to start...where to start? Wow. I already enjoy Seanan McGuire's work so much! I wasn't surprised to see something like this story so I was excited when I received an Arc. Author's will come and go. Sometimes work will flow up and down, I read a lot of materials for my job, but this lady is some type of wizard I'm sure of it. Her books just keep finding new and creative subject matter that just blows your mind. I am a fangirl!:) Middlegame takes you on a ride that weaves you back and forth through time. At first, I thought wow this book is so hard to follow, but before you have time to complain it's over. I was like where did it go. Well done Ms. McGuire!
As with much of McGuire's writing, I always seem to start skeptical because the very start of her novels always feels a bit disjointed. And yet, I always end up loving the webs she weaves and find myself completely engrossed in the story. I absolutely cannot recommend her enough.
I received an ARC from Netgalley.
This book was... wow. I loved the characters! All of them! Even the villains!!! I loved the plot, even if I felt so lost at times. I loved the shifting perspectives, it added a sense of urgency to the story which I really loved. The concept of this book was super unique and I would happily read another book set in this world with the same characters even. Everyone felt believable, even the bad guys. If you are into sci-fi/fantasy type books, you should definitely pick this book up!!!
Rodger and Dodger are twins separated at birth-but what are they, really? This story is at first confusing, a little choppy, but then as you get into the story further, things start falling into place. This is a bit different that McGuire's usual type of novel, but very good.
What a ride! I'm not sure if this book is for everyone, but anyone who likes McGuire's other works should definitely give this one a try. It's a bit more adult than the Wayward Children series she's been writing recently, but some echoes of the surreality/magical reality of that series really comes through in this book as well. I didn't stop reading all the way through but it does take a bit of time to really feel comfortable with the chronology of events as it unfolds in the book.
