A fabulous story that pulls you in and a lovely mix of charactors.Elenor goes to stay with her Aunt Maude and becomes entranced with Rose the daughter of her aunts housekeeper. To say there is a gripping plot is an understatement.I would recommend you read this book it is worthy of the 5* and more i loved it.
We start out, as the reader, being introduced to the character Rose, as she is in the midst of Nazis bombing the city of Coventry, England. We then jump back before the war began and follow the storyline of Rose and Eleanor as their lives intertwine and the war creeps into their lives from there. There’s a secret about Rose threatening to become known and Elenor risks everything to ensure it stays hidden.
❝For the first time in her life, at nearly seven years old, Rose understood the pain of war and loss.❞
Within the first few pages my eyes began to water and I knew instantly this was going to be an emotional and gripping WWII novel. I was initially interested in the book being set in England. I had never read a novel taking place in England during the dismal years of the Second World War.
The writing style was simplistic and easy to read. I loved the mysteriousness that continuously engrossed me.
The characters were very well flushed out. I adored the charming wit of some and cringed at how arrogant others were. I think the author did a great job balancing out both likable and unlikeable characters. I felt my heart-strings pull for Rose and Eleanor. Their relationship was so precious to see unravel.
I’m left pleading for a sequel because the ending was heart-warming yet simultaneously left me aching to know more about these characters and their lives!
Thank you to Netgalley, HarperImpulse, and Killer Reads for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book and devoured it within a couple of days. No spoilers, but the premise included a twist I hadn't read in other WWII historical novels. I wish the author had handled the foreshadowing a bit more deftly; lots of plot complications remained unresolved at the end of the novel. However, I happily used my imagination to fill in the blanks.
A child left alone after a bombing of her home. The story takes us through her rescue by a loving woman and then the lies covering a dark secret of her parents. A warm story of the kindness of people in tragic times and how some lived to find peace and happiness after the dark years.
This is what historical fiction is all about! We see a bit of current day and then it goes back to the 1940's. During, before and after the Blitz. I love the character of Grace. Such a sweet little child who goes through so much heartbreak. Elenor is a character that I love reading about, strong and willful!
Nothing but praise for Glynis Peters! I am hoping that she either continues this story or gives us more of her imagination and style in another great novel.

This book was absolutely AMAZING! I didnt want the story to end! It was well written and the characters were well developed that I actually thought I was part of it all. I completed The Secret Orphan within a few hours. I HIGHLY recommend this book and would like to thank netgalley for letting me give an honest review of this book.
I did NOT want the story to end. I was so invested in this story. I was so caught up until the last paragraph. I even exclaimed NO! I want more. I want to know more when they moved.
This is truly one of the best historical novels I've read. I actually felt like I was there. I was rooting for the young heroine. I love how she grew up quickly. I love how she took on the orpan and made her own. I love how she fought for her.
The story starts right before the WWII and into the WWII. The author drew me into her web and keep me there until the end. It was hard for me to put the book down before going to work. I came back home straight to the book to continue reading the magical tale.
I just did NOT want this wonderful story to end!
