#Daretosleep #NetGalley This is the second book of Cally Taylor's I have read, the first being The Fear and I am fast becoming a big fan of her work. I read this in just over 24 hours - a real whodunnit with several potential suspects. I found myself, along with the main character Anna, switching between the various people within the hotel!! Easy to read and kept me on my toes throughout. I don't think there are any plans for a sequel but the story left you guessing as to how the relationship between Anna and Joe may/may not develop and what was to become of Katie. A great read.
A genuinely spooky, quick read with great characters - lots to work out and not a heavily signposted conclusion. Would highly recommend.
Great little mystery story full of suspicious characters and red herrings!
So why only three stars? The use of multiple character narratives was annoying and didn't add anything to the plot.
400 pages read.....just like that! Yep 400 pages whizzed past me without me even recognising how many pages were in this latest book of CL Taylor’s.
I opened the book after studying the cover (like you do) and wondered what relevance and connection, if any, would be within these pages.
Well, you soon find out.
The beginning of the story makes me feel for Anna. She was the driver of the car that killed two people, one injured. I couldn’t help but think and feel for her. To blame yourself is the first human instinct, she was at the wheel. She had her passengers lives and other road users in the palm of her hands. We all do. As soon as we take that wheel and start to drive......
But someone feels that justice has not been mete out.
Anna is plagued by terrible insomnia, she doesn’t sleep well and if she does she wakes up terrified.
Anna needs to get a grip so she finds a job on a remote island in Scotland.
There are all types of characters that come to stay and we learn that each one is not who they seem to be.
It’s edgy, it’s thrilling and it’s full of suspense. The reader really gets pulled into the story at an alarming rate, and with such penship as this author writes you can help but feel everything, be right where the characters are staying, imagine yourself as part of this plot.
She really has such a way of twirling and entwining the reader, luring you into each sentence, each narration.
It’s hard to explain, but her descriptive writing just plonks you into the middle of it all. If the person is terrified, then I am. If the person is hiding and it’s creepy, then so am I, holding my breath so I can’t be heard. That’s the only way I can discribe this authors writing.
Many times I was holding my breath. One time was when Anna was searching rooms I was right there as a watch out for her. If she heard a creep on the stairs I’m biting my nails saying “quick....hurry....hide....don’t get caught” I kid you not. I was so invested in this plot I forgot all time and heard my sons alarm clock ring to get him out of bed and go to work.
The only book I’ve not read yet is Treatment.
I plan to read this over Christmas.
Thank you publishers for sending me an early copy.
This does not influence my review or thought. I anticipate every book this author writes.
Driving three colleagues back to London from a bonding weekend in the wilds, Anna’s vehicle is hit by an oncoming lorry. She eventually comes round in hospital only to find that two of her passengers are dead and the third paralysed. The accident haunts her, despite her name having been cleared by the coroner. She cannot sleep, she feels she is being stalked and that someone blames her and is intent on killing her. Her relationship with her boyfriend Alex has been rocky and her feelings of insecurity rapidly lead to a complete break up. After time spent with her parents she is offered a job on the lovely, but remote, island of Rum as assistant to the owner. On arrival she finds that she is the only employee and sets to work hoping her nightmares will cease. Still troubled, she has to deal with the arrival of seven guests booked in for a walking holiday. They are a mixed bunch, obviously with their own past problems, and her uneasiness, never far from the surface, develops into another nightmare scenario. She is convinced that one of them will murder her - but who?? Many twists and turns make this novel extremely intriguing and very hard to put down.
Not quite finished this book but loving it. It's my first C L TAYLOR think I'm going to have to go back and read the rest. It was thrilling and had me on the edge of my seat, the author has done an amazing job,.
A complicated thriller which had me guessing as much as the main character!
A mixed assembled cast who were all a bit suspicious and odd, shooting ending.
*thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
2.5 stars.
I found this to be only slightly interesting. I kept thinking the story would pick up along the way and get better and better but it stayed the same level of enjoyment throughout. It held my attention just barely but I found it to be a bit too much of a struggle to get through. It wasnt a bad book its just my enjoyment level was low. I had higher hopes for it as the description of the story made it sound so good. Unfortunately it's not one I'll remember.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a fast paced, gripping thriller, with fully fleshed out characters. The main character, Anna, is instantly likeable. I'm not sure a storm in Scotland would continue unabated for so long, but I'm willing to suspend disbelief for such a good story. The book is almost a country house murder scenario, with the characters trapped in an isolated hotel by bad weather. I heartily recommend this book.
I have loved all of C L Taylor's previous books and was looking forward to this one. However I found it to be very complex and I couldn't keep track of all of the characters and eventually gave up
Wow. Fast paced and dramatic, this is one hell of a read. The setting is perfect and really adds to the atmosphere. Gripping.
Small hotel, remote Scottish setting, handful of guests and everyone with a secret to hide...what’s not to like? C L Taylor writes convincing taut thrillers and this is no exception. Each of the characters has a backstory and there are so many red herrings dropped as the tale develops, I found it impossible to guess the outcome. Enfossed from start to finish.
The plotting is carefully structured and builds layer by layer. I kept reading just a bit more until I finished it in a couple of sessions and was really didn’t see the final reveal.
A great thriller for a dark night in. My thanks to the publisher for a review copy via Netgalley.
C.L. Taylor writes fantastic books that I've enjoyed over the last couple of years so I was excited to get my hands on Sleep.
I wondered how much enjoyment I'd get out of a book which really, has one prime setting throughout but I was pleasantly surprised. Cally creates a dark and mysterious location for the characters to thrive and throughout the plot drops plenty of red herrings to keep the reader guessing. I certainly didn't guess the main plot twist but I enjoyed trying to! The book touches on some really important subjects and although at first, I thought the guests of the hotel to be slightly dull, I was proved wrong as we learnt more about them. Anna as the protagonist was developed incredibly well throughout, I was concerned she could end up quite whingy but she certainly bit back!
Story starts with very typical letter -
If you are reading this, I am already dead…..
I have lost count how many times I read thrillers which starts with that so as soon as I started reading, I put myself on high alert so that I would not be overly disappointed. Thank God, it has turned out as good as it could be.
As the story progresses, it becomes obvious that each guest is lying or they have some secrets of their own. What didn’t set well with me is, every secret is not related to the story. Whose life is without secrets? none’s but does each one’s secret is relevant to the story? No. but I can understand need to spill everyone’s then only you can decide its relevancy, I guess.
As expected, or not expected (depending how you want to say it), it was total surprise to find killer. That is the other problem with reviewing psychological thrillers. There are very few decent thrillers out there that made you want to gush about it but it is difficult to actually do it without spilling beans.
I really like these type of stories where we are isolated from outside world and trying to figure out whodunit. It is very Agatha Christi theme but again my problem is since there are so many people are being introduced, it is entirely possible to lose track of everyone’s story and trying to remember who’s who? However, Taylor did it so effortlessly; I hardly struggled to remember each character.
Overall, I am very pleased with this novel and I would want to read more from this author, indeed.
Anna Willis is involved in a fatal car accident involving her work colleagues. She escapes with minor injuries, but the psychological impact is lasting and her inability to sleep well affects her hugely. Ending her already failing relationship with Alex, and receiving a couple of strange sleep-related notes, she decides to start fresh and move to the Isle of Rum. Getting a job at the Bay View Hotel she hopes to get away from her past and finally get some sleep, but is one of the guests, with all of their own secrets, the exact thing she was trying to get away from?
C.L Taylor has written fabulously. Her writing is really engrossing and the amount of emotions you feel through her rollercoaster ride of a story is fantastic.
The central character, Anna, was very likeable and I felt immediately drawn to her. You could empathise and understand her thoughts and emotions, whilst also feeling sorry for her and everything that was going on.
It kept me guessing right until the end, and I honestly hadn’t a clue ‘whodunnit’. The clues made sense and it wrapped itself up really nicely.
Of course I couldn’t review this book without a thank you - thanks to C.L Taylor for the wonderful competition that I won. Seeing my name as a character in a book is amazing and I hope all the other Becca’s out there enjoyed seeing a character with our name - it’s not a common occurrence for sure!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
To date, I have thoroughly enjoyed every single book that C L Taylor has written, and always pounce with great anticipation on any new ones that come along, so I was delighted to be invited to review 'Sleep'...and as always I was hooked.
The book opens with the key event; Anna has been out with her work colleagues, with whom it's fair to say that she doesn't have the best of working relationships! There is a disagreement, a distraction - and a horrific car crash. Two of her passengers die, one is permanently disabled - and Anna is injured, but after a stay in hospital, she walks away!
But Anna carries guilt, the blame for the accident sitting heavily on her shoulders; she struggles to sleep, suffering from nightmares and terrors as she relives the crash, and becomes increasingly paranoid, convinced that someone is out to get her.
Finally, in desperation, Anna flees to a new job and a new start as a hotel receptionist on a remote Scottish island. However, as clouds gather over the island, and its occupants become stranded by the storm things take a sinister turn....
I really enjoyed this book. It certainly kept me reading long into the night!
I give it 4 stars.
I've read quite a few C.L Taylor books now so I was delighted to hear I had been pre-approved to read Sleep. This is another brilliant book by C.L. Taylor. I love a whodunit and there's something about strangers stranded in a remote place, cut off from the world with a murderer among them that captivates me. Sleep was an enjoyable read, full of suspense and kept me guessing.
Thank you to Harper Collins and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ebook in exchange for my honest review.
Enjoyed this book very much, loved the way the characters in the hotel were portrayed. A good ending too and some excellent' turn pagers' throughout the book.
Very good book leaving you doubting everyone and trying to get to the bottom of it, it is always the person you least expect.....
Sleep by C.L. Taylor was an answer to my prayers as I’ve been trying to find and read more locked-in type novels with a promise of lots and lots of possible suspects. If this isn’t one that fits the description then I don’t know what is! I’m such a fan of these settings where there’s no escape and the person forming a threat is right there.. it gives me a thrill to try and work out who it is.
I don’t know why but at first I thought that sleep itself might be a dangerous thing for Anna but, luckily for me, the novel doesn’t take this disturbing route but even if it’s not spooky scary, the novel can still keep you up and give you a sleepless night in the end ;-).
Anna’s reasons for finding it hard to get to sleep are quite different from mine though. She was involved in an accident where some people lost their lives and she feels terribly guilty even though it wasn’t her fault. Unfortunately, someone else feels she is exactly the one to blame. The motive was quite straightforward but the one with ill feelings was not easy to spot. This mysterious person starts taunting her, asking her how she can sleep. In an effort to leave it all behind her she takes a job in the only hotel on the Scottish island called Rum but it will soon turn out that the taunts haven’t stopped and even increase in intensity. Someone’s followed her and is looking to make her pay.
I very much enjoyed trying to figure out who was behind all of it. The author managed to surprise me halfway through the novel with a great twist and threw in some red herrings towards the end as well so that nobody escapes from being a suspect. At a certain time I thought I’d picked up on a tiny clue and I was getting more excited when there was a reference later again but alas, she still managed to wrongfoot me. It was only right at the end that I was certain I had put my money (figuratively!) on the right person. Yay me!
The novel is similar to An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena so I can recommend this novel if you enjoyed reading the former and can’t get enough of it! Sleep.. or don’t sleep if it’s as gripping to you as it was to me!
