My favorite part of The Age of Misadventure were the characters and their dialogue. I love snappy and humorous characters.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC for an honest review.
I’ve found it really tricky to review this one as I am slightly on the fence about it. On one hand I was mistakenly expecting a lighthearted romp (based on the cover and blurb) but this wasn’t really the case and then on the other hand I AM OBSESSED WITH NAN. I’ll stick straight down the middle and play it safe, it’s three stars from me. Thank you!
Ahh Georgie in this book is a similar age to me so I could relate to her. She is looking for love, trying to protect her sister, connect with her daughter and keep her aunt on the straight and narrow! What could happen! Its a book of friendship, family and love. How we all want to feel connected to others. There was a fair bit of humour in it which I always enjoy.
Thank you for the advance copy
I am no longer really interested in reading this title - I have read several Judy Leigh books and, unfortunately, none really measured up to the first one I read. I made it a little way in, but it was just not what I had expected based on the first books of Judy’s I read.
I ended up listening to this book and the narrator is excellent.
I'm not sure I would classify this book as a light, fun read. There are some serious topics in this book, mainly adultery and its consequences Even knowing what Bonnie had been through, I found her tiresome about halfway through the book I understood why Jade was annoyed but, as someone old enough to be her mother, I wanted to shake her and say "have sympathy/compassion for your family". Nan was the light part of the book. Overall, I give this 3 stars., but I'm not going to press it into people hands.
I took this book away as a light hearted holiday read and that was a mistake.
Judging by the cover and the blurb I thought this was going to be a laugh a minute tale. Instead I found that there was something serious going on with the trio hiding out from a criminal and getting police protection.
I did enjoy the character of Nan. In fact it was so true to life I felt some of the things she said must have been overheard from my life. I think if it hadn't been for Nan I would have stopped reading about a third of the way through. Her character really carried the story which at times was rather chilling. I didn't care for any of the other characters. Weak willed, or selfish, they just had no backbone for most of the book.
I found the writing overly descriptive and just wanted to know what was going on, rather than a detailed description of a cafe and meals. It also seemed to take a long time for the book to get going and then when it did it was a rather drawn out affair.
The Age Of Misadventure by Judy Leigh is a really fun contemporary novel, delightfully composed that had me laughing out loud throughout – not one to read in public!
The novel is about family and female companionship. Normal but isolated lives are suddenly interrupted as an eighty eight year old accompanies her two fifty something nieces as they go on a trip to escape what is awaiting them at home, through no fault of their own.
Where there were three ladies whom life had individually squashed, together they find love and life and care. As they begin to try new things and enjoy life together, their love for each other shines through.
Letting go of our children and giving them wings to fly is hard, no matter how old they are. It is hard not to hold on and stifle them.
My heart broke as a life lived under the shadow of grief, opened up after sixty years of silence.
The characters are all wonderfully drawn, highly amusing and so much fun. Eighty eight year old Nan caused much hilarity with her malapropisms and her new found zest for life.
The Age Of Misadventure is another fabulous offering from Judy Leigh. Her novels always brighten my day and leave me smiling.
I received a free copy via Net Galley. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
Not sure why the description states it was funny, and the cover looks like a vacation. Georgie has a cruel and selfish daughter, a sister who keeps going back to her crook of a husband and a great aunt who likes to drink. Escaping a dangerous situation they head to Brighton, but the bad guys follow. Hard when you don’t like the characters, but kept my interest enough to see through to the end. Would recommend.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.
After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.
I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.
A free copy of this book was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Georgie is a woman who is beginning to feel like she is drifting apart from her daughter. When her sister Bonnie's husband gets into trouble with some gangsters, the women, along with Georgie's aunt pack up and go to the south coast to hide away in her daughter's boyfriend's house until it's safe.
I got through this book despite it not really capturing me the way I wanted it to. I didn't really engage with any of the characters. There was so much selfishness and arguing going on between all four women that I just ended up annoyed by all of them. In addition to that, half the problems in the story could have been solved if any of the characters had shown any common sense, romance or not.
A fairly speedy read, but not the most sympathetic characters. 2 stars.
Fun easy read enjoyed the characters found it emotional at times a pleasant read .A book I will be recommending to friends who want a book that entertains,#netgalley#avonbooksuk
I’m a bit on the fence with this one - did I enjoy it, or did I not? The plot was definitely unexpected as the description on Netgalley doesn’t even begin to describe what actually happens in the book, and (I know it’s a story) but I found it a bit far-fetched. I also didn’t care for 2 of the main characters; I found one very rude and the other gross/disgusting. It was an okay read, but sadly it wasn’t for me. Rated it 3 stars because I really am torn with it.
'I am sorry, I have persevered with this book but found it difficult to 'get into' and it has taken several attempts to get to about a third of the way through. I think that was partly as it seemed to take a long time to get going and it was 20%+ through before there seemed to be any theme/story involved. I have continued to read it on and off between other books but although I am now over 35% through I think I will give up. Sorry, probably just not one for me.
The Age of Misadventure is Judy Leigh’s second novel, her first being the very funny A Grand Old Time. Loved the cover, very bright and colourful. This wonderful book is about three generations of women in the Turner family. We have the lovely Georgina and her sister Bonnie, Georgina’s daughter Jade and the wonderful Aunt Nan (my favourite character!) who is just incredible and so very funny. Everything she said and did was hilarious and made me laugh so much especially when she used the spiraliser!
An unexpected unplanned trip turned all their lives upside down at first but turned into a journey of a lifetime for them all which brought all the family so much closer together and gave new meanings to all their lives. They had one huge adventure, full of troubles, but in turn full of love and happiness too.
Such a wonderful story which shows in adversity, everyone working together (well most of the time!) brings out the best in people and unites them and makes them even stronger. Through bringing them all together they have manage to make all their futures much brighter and enabling them to live life to the full and go beyond.
The ending was not what I expected – much better than I expected :-)
A fun book which I thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend. Full of fun, laughter and lots of smiles!
I look forward to Judy Leigh’s third novel.
I have never read Judy Leigh before and I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the cover and knew it was going to be a fun read. The story was this: 55-year-old Georgie Turner doesn’t need a new man. As she gets older, she and her family drift apart, like it usually happens when life gets in the way. But when she learns her brother in law hasn't been faithful, she gets her sister, her daughter, her 80 year old aunt and escape to the Sussex coast. A family adventure. But as adventures go, there is love opportunities, family bonding, and laughs to share. A great read! I cannot wait to read more from this author. Thanks Netgalley for the ARC.

After enjoying “A Grand Old Time” I was looking forward to reading “The Age of Misadventure”. Unfortunately I found the plot weak and repetitive and the characters boring on the whole. The writing style was also rather immature- it could have been written by someone else!
I actually enjoyed this book..it was a light easy read.
When you run a busy business from home,, your sister is married to a habitual cheater but goes back for more, you care for an elderly relative and your daughter wants to live out, plus you've never really dated since your ex-husband left?
Follow this journey of a lady who puts others before herself.
Sorry, I just couldn't get in to this at all and didn't finish the book. I've read books by Judy Leigh before and really enjoyed them but this one just wasn't for me unfortunately
Struggled to adhere to the main character George & found the whole story far too far fetched, long & drawn out and questioning myself as to whether the police would not have intervened sooner?? That said I did finish it, just to find out final conclusion
It is a really great book! Amusing and totally entertaining.
Inside you can find an unputdownable story about three different women who need to run away from their homes to hide a while in the house of a famous Spanish footballer.
This novel has intrigue, love and laughs, a lot of laughs thanks to the character of Nanny, and eighty-old woman with a sarcastic humour, (I proclaim myself a fan of her)
“The Age of Misadventure” is a perfect feel-good novel to have a good time anywhere, anytime.
