Mary finds out that her husband is leaving her for another man in such an excruciatingly public and humiliating way – and perhaps not every wife treated that way would continue to support everyone involved, to the extent of being best woman at her husband’s wedding. But Mary Black isn’t “every wife”, although many of the long-married might well recognise and identify with her. It was her emotional authenticity that made me so love this book – she might have become “beige”, but she’s also strong, wise and funny, and I ached for her to find herself and the happiness she so deserved. This is indeed a love story with a real difference – and although the romantic thread was strong and believable, the person Mary most needed to love was always herself.

Although Mary is always the one that draws your attention – and I really liked the back story, full of secrets and lies deeply hidden, extremely well-handled – the supporting cast in this book is excellent. Husband Leo seems quite oblivious to the damage caused by his betrayal, totally self-centred, piling on a few more wrongs just for good measure. Her teenage daughter frankly needs a good slap – monstrous behaviour! – but I did rather like the quiet interventions and occasional words of wisdom from son Jonas. The support network of friend Daisy and “marvellous” mother-in-law Audrey lifted the book nicely – well, she certainly needed more support than she could get from her self-sacrificing and rather horrendous mother, living her life amid a few new secrets in the garage. I also loved the parallels in the story of lost Lancashire Victorian novelist Alice Hornby – while the search for her lost novel and diaries added a whole new level of interest to the story, it also introduced the real constraints that blighted Alice’s happy ending, while the only thing holding Mary back is herself.

The writing is thoroughly excellent – an easy read in many ways, but with a real depth of feeling and emotion. Mary’s inability to let herself go may sometimes frustrate, but her actions and reactions are never less than absolutely real and entirely understandable. Fair to mention, I think, that there’s a degree of untangling of threads towards the end of the book that might not be everyone’s cup of tea, although it certainly worked for me – this is fiction after all. But this really was a book that had captured my heart from its opening pages – and its final scenes, in full widescreen technicolour and cinemascope, were some of the very loveliest I’ve read in a long time. Yes, I’ll admit I might have had something in my eye for a moment… Mary Black, I do so hope your future will be a happy one.

Mary’s husband of 20 years leaves her for another man. She finds out in a public setting and the story follows what happens next. I found this book quite slow, but my preference is always to read fast paced books to keep my attention. I also struggled with the main character as she often seemed to retreat into herself lacking the option to speak up for herself at times this was frustrating. There again I was sucked into the story and felt that frustration for her. It’s an enjoyable easy read.

This was a good quick read. I found it a bit too predictable. There was nothing in the plot that excited me. I prefer more unpredictability and drama in the books I read.

THE MAN I FELL IN LOVE WITH by Kate Field

A complicated story of love found and love lost. The characters are finely drawn and all have likeable traits and flaws of varying degrees. The main problem befalling our lead character is a sensitive issue and one that will have many women asking, 'could this happen to me?'
The author skilfully gives her cast redeeming, believable qualities even in the most heart-wrenching situations. This is an enjoyable, interesting book. Loved the heroine, Mary, and found myself with fingers crossed hoping that she would find happiness and true love.
Would definitely recommend this excellent novel to readers of romantic fiction.

The Man I Fell in Love With by Kate Field is well written and well told. Mary's husband of twenty years leaves her for another man and this is the story of what happens after. It's a story of survival and how Mary moves on. It's well written and emotional as well as having uplifting qualities too. I really enjoyed reading it.

The Man I Fell in Love With by Kate Field a four-star read you can fall for. This was so well written and there is such a talent to the writing that I couldn’t put it down, I would have given it five-stars, but I also knew what was coming so didn’t feel that I could, it was so weird as I needed to know if was right or not. The ending is a little boom all over, but it finishes the story s overall its good. I would definitely look out for this author again, she has a good talent for writing, and I can’t wait to see more.

The Man I Fell in Love With is the story of Mary, a woman whose husband left her for another man after 20 years of marriage and what happens in the aftermath. Mary is self sacrificing to a fault, there were times I was screaming at her to speak up for herself! This book moved slowly at times and I thought the ending was a little abrupt. Overall however I enjoyed her journey from the life she thought she had to creating the life she wanted.

One of the best books I have read.

The book title says it all really. On and on and on, Mary Black kept saying she loves her husband even though he went off with someone else. Couldn't we have a little more excitement as she comes across as dull - rather like this book. Perhaps 'chicklit' (if that is the genre?) is not for me? Even the sub plot was more interesting.

An enjoyable, lovely book!! I found myself drawn in by the description and it did not disappoint. I enjoyed the little twists throughout this emotional love story. I appreciated the character development and the chance to take a glimpse at the interesting family dynamic. A marvelous story beginning to end!

This book wasn't for me but I can appreciate how others would love it. I found the protagonist to be old before her time - the same for the next generation up. This annoyed me and once I'm irritated by something in a book it is difficult for me to then enjoy it. I can think of friends I would recommend it to.

Mary should have know, shouldn't she, that her husband Leo was really interested in another man? Well, she surely didn't expect to see him holding hand with a man at a Christmas party, of all things! Mary's settled, calm life gets blown sideways and all she wants to do is keep the peace and keep everyone else happy. Yes, she's not thinking about herself and yes she lets everyone walk all over her (her kids- geez, Leo- yow) but then her brother-in-law Ethan shows up and makes her think that maybe she needs to reconsider her life. This is nicely done, with some special moments, and it will make you smile in spots. You'll also hiss and boo occasionally. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A second chance at life story.

A very emotional story and a great read. At times I wanted to give Mary a shake and wished she had given Leo a right piece of her mind as he was so selfish. Have never read this author before but would definitely read more of her work. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it

The Man I fell in love with is a love story but it is so much more .The characters are very believable and though I could guess the ending early on it was still a very enjoyable read.Again another book that was very hard to put down .Mary is such a lovely character but I really wanted to tell her to get a grip !!! Mary Black, our heroine, finds out that here husband is and has been in a relationship with a man for a matter of months in a very public place. She handles it about as well as can be expected. This book follows her dealing with the divorce, his new marriage, the children, family, and being ready to get back out there.
This book is full of unintentional harm which made it feel all the more realistic. It's rare that someone important intends to do someone harm - so much of the pain that shows up in the real world are the slights where someone doesn't quite think about all the angles. Mary deals with her children seeming to choose their father over her, her ex-husband forgetting to ever thank her for her work, and so much pestering.
The main romance in this book was also quite interesting. It seemed clear from fairly early on what the HEA was going to be. There was a air of taboo with it (If I really thought about what that relationship would be like in the real world, I'm not sure how I would ultimately feel about it) but it was fun watching Mary finally realize what was happening.
I read this is no time, the twists and turns kept me wanting to keep reading.

I read a line that described this book as " a love story with a difference " I would have to agree. Totally enjoyable, engaging read.

Wonderful. Can Mary pick herself up after 20 years of contented marriage to Leo who has now left her for Clark? Coping with a brattish teenager daughter,a straight speaking mother and devoted mother in law next door, is difficult enough without an impossibly good looking brother in law coming onto the scene after years away. Then there's the art teacher at her daughter's school.. And she still has to work with Leo. The well written characters maintain the readers interest throughout.

DNF at 35%. This bok was not unpleasant, but it also felt predictable and just didn't sparkle for me, and I just wasn't interested in reading more. Mostly, I just couldn't really identify with Mary. We're close in age, but she read to me as much older, or maybe it's just that she has been a mother since 21 and I'm happily childfree. She just seemed really clueless and out of touch with herself--I'm sure by the end she turns that all around, but I couldn't be conv?y is she constantly getting a babysitter for her 14 and 16-year-old children? They're old enough to BE babysitting, so this seemed rather bizarre.

What a beautiful love story. But a story with so many twists. I was praying that Mary would find love again.
At times I wanted to shout at her to stop feeling so sorry for herself.
I don’t want to say too much as it’s will spoil things.
But it’s a really good read.
Read this in roughly 2 days .
