Amber lives an almost perfect life. She works in a bookshop and has a great husband, David.
Everything is fine in ambers life until a body is pulled out of the water. Amber knows the name
Pretty soon, she becomes suspicious of her husband and begins to find out some hard truths
This book was incredible. I absolutely loved it. It was full of twists and turns and I really engaged with amber as a character
Great book
Psychological thrillers are my go too and this one just didn't do it for me. The characters were a bit hard to relate to or even connect with. I put this book down twice and had to force myself to finish it. There was lost suspense and lost interest early on. I can't tell you not to read it, it just wouldn't be the first book I pick up.
An engrossing read, with plenty of twists to keep the reader guessing.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed reading this as just when I thought I had guessed the twists the author would throw in even more! It kept me engaged and had parts that were truly shocking; plus it was a super quick read. The whole book raised so many questions about what is considered good and bad, plus how you can actually be harming when you think you're helping - which leaves the reader questioning the end!
Overall it was a solid read and kept me entertained. I read it quickly and would recommend it to anyone!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for sending me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I had such high hopes for this book. It starts out really slow and is hard to get into. I found myself not liking any of the characters there for not really caring what happend to any of them. I fineally have up 46 % into the book. Sorry but this book just was not for me.
A bit predictable. Lots of the suspense was lost as the motivation for the main characters' behaviour was lost early on. The way that Amber's colleagues acted was also a bit odd. A decent read but not a great one.
Twisty! Exciting! Addictive! Thrilling! Suspenseful! Keeps you guessing! Everything you could want in a psychological thriller!

*I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley & Harper Impulse and Killer Reads in order to read and provide a voluntary and honest review, should I choose to do so.
I really enjoyed this book. It was continually engaging and hard to put down. Thank you to the author (of whom I have not read a novel before but will certainly do so again in the future on the basis of this novel!). Great characters, structure and thrilling essence.
The blurb of the book had me interested but I was not prepared for the book itself. It surprised me on many occasions. It was easy to read and the characters were relatable. Excellent I would recommend this.
Every time you think you know what’s coming next there is a twist in the book.
A well written plot.
This book was excellent! Totally kept my attention and I wanted to find out what would become of the main characters. Highly reccomended.
Compulsive reading, this is an addictive suspenseful psychological thriller like no other.
The plot is unpredictable with lots of twists and turns along with solid engaging characters.
There is also a sense of dread as the story deals with the deep and dark corners of the human psych.
I very much enjoyed this and would recommend it to anyone!
The blurb made this book sound really good but sadly it didn't deliver. It started off ok but seemed to lose it's way somewhere. I perservered but found it hard going unfortunately.
I had so much high hopes for this book. I wasn't really thrilled with this one. I couldn't get into it half way through. The writing could have been better but it was kinda predictable. I didn't care for the characters at all. The story was good but could have been written differently.
Thank you Netgalley, the author and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I gave up at 90ish % of the way through.
It just wasn't holding my interest.
I didn't like any of the characters, and I'd felt a while that I knew exactly where it was going.
Wasn't interested enough to find out if I was right
While my stars show 3, I’d rate this a 3.75. It was a good read, but I felt difficulties connecting with the characters.
I found this a frustrating read. I know a review should reflect both positives and negatives, but thinking back it's hard to pin down anything I really liked about it.
Issue 1: I found the main character, Amber, quite irritating. I almost stopped reading during the scene-setting chapter, before anything mysterious happened, because her voice grated on me so much. Probably a personal response.
Issue 2: The book manages to be both predictable and confusing. It's written in a very overblown style that makes it a slog to read; the early chapters seem designed to be mysterious but I just found them dull and rather incomprehensible. Yet at the same time, because there is no plausible alternative explanation offered for the murder – and because a lot of the backstory is given away up front without any attempt to construct an actual mystery – I could see the 'twists' coming a mile off.
Issue 3: Related to this, there is literally no suspense. We know everyone's motivations almost from the start. I wouldn't call this a psychological thriller. If anything, it's an unconvincing character study.
I'm really sorry to be so negative. I did find some of the backstory interesting. There could have been the bones of a good plot in here. But ultimately, this wasn't for me.
Amber and David will take you on a roller coaster of emotions as the pages turn faster than you anticipate.
This book was just okay for me, maybe 3.5 stars.
The concept is interesting but there really isn’t enough characters to make it a compelling mystery. You keep reading wondering what happened and why one of the two characters did the killing.
While the backstory is sad and the ripple effect presented is important and, most likely, an accurate representation of how abuse of one child can ruin so many lives, I just didn’t find it very suspenseful.
Additionally there were a lot of non-American colloquialisms - “mate”, “flat”, etc.....
Amber is happy, she loves her husband David and their dog Sadie, she even loves her job as a junior editor on a local newspaper. But when the body of a young woman is found in a stretch of river near her home, Amber’s world begins to implode.
The headaches that she has been struggling with seem to intensify and Amber begins to doubt her husband, why doesn’t he want to probe deeper into the story and why does she seem to have such a shaky hold on her own thoughts and memories? Amber begins to question everything she believes in and as she starts to probe deeper, her discovery will bring her ever closer to home…
This one took me a little while to get in to, but I really liked the characters and thought they were well written. I also thought the ending was great and wrapped things up nicely.
