Useful addition to any local history library, and a good resource for those researching their Scottish ancestry.

This Family Tree reference book is helpful for researching Scottish ancestry. The author is knowledgeable and shares that knowledge in an easy to use format. The book starts out with general history, helpful for putting people, places \, and things into perspective. Most of the research ideas and materials are focused on Scottish to America lines, so the strata of those Scots who emigrated to Ireland and then to America are mentioned but not emphasized. All in all, I found the book to be very worthwhile including in a genealogy reference library, for amateur as well as professional research.
I received my copy through NetGalley under no obligation.

This is a very helpful resource when diving into your Scottish family tree. Also gave me ideas to use when searching for other people in my family tree.

I live in Scotland and have been doing my family history for a while, but I enjoyed this book as a summary of the country, it's history and the resources available. It is easy to follow and interesting to read. I'd recommend it for beginners either just starting or just beginning to explore their Scottish roots.

Thank you to Net Galley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this outstanding book.
I am Scottish and starting a family tree that no one in my family wanted to do. As the last of 3 living members of my Scottish family I was thrilled to receive this book for review. The author is a well respected authority on genealogy so I felt this book was a great first reference book to read.

This book is a wealth of information. The author has included basic information on how to start family history research, including identifying and tracing immigrant ancestors and steps for using records from Scotland and the United States.
There are even guides to surnames and Scottish History which is a important piece of the knowledge a reader needs to move forward . . I am buying this in hard back to utilize as my guide for tracing my ancestors. A very highly recommended book for all who are Scottish and interested in following their family history.

I've just recently discovered my Scots ancestry so I was super excited to find this book on offer by Netgalley! Seems to have lots of good info on tracking down your families roots. I'll know for sure when I get to Scotland in a year or so! It's a good book to find leads with.

This is the typical Genealogy book. It gives great resources on how to find family, who where of Scottish descendent. How to use your own records to find these members of your family. The resources given also show you where to start if you dont know for sure about family who was Scottish. I love learning about the Scottish and their genealogy. These are the reasons I rated it 3 stars. I would recommend it to families looking for their own Scottish roots

A helpful guide for anyone who wants to research their Scottish roots. I particularly liked the section with historical information about the different periods of migration.

This book is a comprehensive guide to researching your Scottish heritage if you are an American with Scottish roots. Many helpful sources are suggested, as well as a basic process by which one would go about tracing their roots. For a beginner, this would be a helpful source. For someone who's already done some preliminary research, perhaps not so much. It does provide lots of extra suggestions for places to look, but I wonder how helpful those might be. I didn't see a lot about Scots who came to America via Canada, though, and that seems to have been a common route of immigration. It would be helpful to include some sources from that aspect.
