I adored this book - the characters, the plot, and the writing - which does an excellent job of opening up the Lynburn Legacy trilogy.
I’m cleaning up my bookshelf and trying to give reviews for past books I’ve read. I know I read this when it came out - I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads back in 2012, which I RARELY give out 5 stars, so it must have been amazing! Thanks for the advanced reader copy!
Loved the characters’ chemistry along with the plot and pacing. This is a classic example of an unexpected book I would recommend to my high schoolers.
I won't be able to leave a review for this book; I requested it in a past lifetime of my NetGalley use (about ten years ago!) and it no longer fits with my reading interests. If I ever do end up reading it I'll come back and update this!

I have followed Brennan on Twitter for years because of her friendship with my spirit animal Maureen Johnson. I always meant to read one of her books but never did, until Unspoken that is. Unspoken literally jumped of a book truck at the library and hit me, I took it as a sign that I should read it. I haven't been disappointed in the least. I already knew Brennan had a sense of humor and a slight cruel streak from reading her tweets and the tweets of her fans that she has shared on her feed, but Unspoken has confirmed it. Unspoken is brilliantly funny and desperately heartbreaking. The overall concept of this book is so fantastic and creative and truly one of a kind. Kami and Jared have such chemistry and they are such well rounded characters that I felt as if I had been friends with them forever. And it’s not just the main characters that are well written! Every character in this novel has a background story and they are all important to how the novel flows. And this doesn’t bog the story down or anything, like it sometimes can, quite the opposite happens in fact: every character enriches the plot and makes this novel even more special! The plot flows nicely and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The whole book is just wonderful (except for the ending which was just cruel and I know I should have expected a cliffhanger, but I never do and I am ALWAYS CAUGHT OFF GUARD). I look forward to reading more of Sarah Rees Brennan’s books!
I love this book so much! The characters are so well thought out and seem so real as I was reading Unspoken. The writing style is perfection so much so that I didn't want to put this book down and read it in one sitting. I couldn't get enough of it and actually read it through twice because I couldn't stop thinking about it.
Thanks for the advanced readers copy. I was not able to get into this one, so I won't be proving a review on social media.
I really liked the premise of this book and I will probably finish reading the series. For many it’s your typical YA book, secrets, love triangles, teen angst. It’s teen fantasy that starts out as a simple enough mystery but definitely takes a turn!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book!
Unspoken was an excellent introduction to this series - a fresh plot with familiar gothic background. Kami's relationship with the "voice in her head" made her a very unique character and it was nice to see the direct dialogue .
The ending got to me. Someone should have given warnings that it will crush my heart to pieces and dance on them.
I cannot tell how much I liked this book. The story was compelling. Brennan created characters who just resonated with me - I must commend the character development and how she molded the relationships (I love Kami's Dad. Can I have him for a dad?)
While it does not have happy ending (I needed chocolate ice cream after), Unspoken was a compelling and engaging gothic, weird-but-in-a-good-way read.
Oh the feels. Kami and Jared are just made for each other. I know it. There’s no way they could not end up together, right, Sarah? Right?
This story is very different from Sarah’s Demon Lexicon trilogy. Unspoken has a lighter air to it and it’s more of a romance than an action-y paranormal page-turner. But that’s totally okay, I really enjoyed it because of this. I’m getting a little tired of this giant plot-based in fantasy and paranormal books. Sometimes I like reading a light, paranormal romance with thought-out characters and good dialog. That’s exactly what this book is.
Kami is a spunky character who knows exactly what she wants in life—a successful high school (secondary school?) newspaper career. Although Kami’s one-liners and light-heartedness are ridiculously cute for the most part, at times, they are a little repetitive and eye-roll-worthy. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a great character, she’s just a little too perky every once in a while.
Now Jared, the American (Did I forget to mention that this book takes place in the U.K.? Well, it does.) bad boy who talks to Kami in her mind, had me drooling. I haven’t read about a good bad boy since I read Gena Showalter’s A Mad Zombie Party. Despite getting his viewpoint sometimes, I still never really knew what he was going to do/say, like the whole punching someone in the face thing. (You’ll see what I mean once you start reading.) The two of them together are just a combination of awkward, ship-worthy, and fantastic!
I must say, though, that the third person point-of-view left me wanting. I really like to get into the character’s heads, and third person with dual povs doesn’t allow that. While the book managed to have me liking the characters, if it was a first-person pov book, I’d probably be loving them.
Learning about the paranormal aspects of the book is a constant surprise. I still don’t know exactly how the rules of their paranormal world work, but you can bet I’ll be finding out in book #2!
All in all, this book is a delightfully fun piece of literature. If you’re in a reading slump, I’d suggest checking this baby out. You’ll be out of that slump quicker than you can say “Breaking and entering.”
4/5 stars
*Note: I purchased a copy of this book for myself. This in no way affected my review.
I love Sarah Rees Brennan. Quirky, funny, creative, her books are so unique and just draws the reader in.
Sorry, requested this book but didn't get around to reading it.
I did not find this series compelling at all. It was not paced very well, the action seemed to drag and it had way to must teen angst in it to be appealing to me. I do read a lot of YA books but I am a middle aged adult. This book could really appeal to younger readers. We will buy a copy for the library and see what the teens say before purchasing more of this series.
I find Sarah Rees Brennan to be a very hit-or-miss author for me. I've liked some of her stuff and others have in no way hit the mark for me. I think I'm ever hopeful that I'll enjoy all of an author's work, however that is not the case here and I did not finish reading this book in its entirety.
