I really wanted to like this book more. It started so well. I like the premise and love conquers all thematic elements.
I felt like the characters where thrown together and then completely lose their identities once thrown. At one point, I felt so bad for the male lead that started crying (not normal for me).
I did like that they "got married" first before the grittier scenes began. I also liked that the characters started strong.
Maybe if I had read the other books in the series I might feel differently about this one. It was the first one that I read in the series.
I loved that this is a little different take on the Highland Protectors. I definitely don’t want to spoil the fun of the little twist Katie and Ramsay’s story provides. But I will say that their’s is not a story to be missed. If you haven’t read the first two, go right now and do it! This is a fun series to binge read.
5 stars!!
This is actually book 3 in a series. But thankfully, the book explains itself well enough that you don’t need to read the first two to enjoy this one. Although some elements might make more sense if you do.
Initially, I thought this book was a full blown historical, but it actually starts in modern day and has time travel! Ok, still good. However, I felt this story actually dragged quite a bit and despite all the dead time, there was hardly any development between the characters Katie and Highlander Ramsey. The plot is very fatalistic and basically pushed these two together because fate says so and we are given very little of anything else. And despite it looking like a hot bodice ripper...there is very little steam.
Another thing I found very jarring was that based on the wardrobe descriptions, there wasn’t much research done on how ladies of the 10th century actually dressed. This might go unnoticed by the casual reader, but for history buffs like me, details like that are important.
All in all, this book was alright. It was fun in places and I LOVED Katie! I think she deserved a bit more development in her romance. I really wish I liked it more!
Katie's Highlander by Maeve Greyson is Book 3 in this series. I loved it! I love Scottish romances and this one will not disappoint. The story was well written and so full of details and culture of the 10th century. Katie and Ramsay are the main characters and the story worked so well between them. Time travel from 2016 to the 10th century and all that it entails. I was not expecting the time travel aspect but it worked so well. I have read the previous two books in this series, but this story can be read as a stand alone book. I highly recommend this story and look forward to more from Maeve Greyson.
I really enjoyed Katie's Highlander. The details were a big part of what made the story so interesting, but the romance between Katie and Ramsay and her struggle to accept life in the 10th century after living in 2016 was very realistic and compelling. Missing things like tampons, aspirin and coffee are true life and down to earth details that I really appreciated. Their love story and the people surrounding it were also well written. I started with Book 3 instead of Book 1 so I have some catching up to do but Katie's Highlander came totally be read as a stand alone. I definitely want to read more of Maeve Greyson's work!
KATIE’S HIGHLANDER – Maeve Greyson
A Highland Protector Novel
North Carolina – Present Day, Scotland – 8th Century
Background:
In ancient Scotland during the time of the druids, they banded together to form powerful clans to protect their beliefs. The strongest clan was the MacDara and the favorite of the three goddesses. It was the MacDara clan that was tasked to guard the blessed Heartstone, a sentient being. Today, the Highland Protectors are scattered around the world, but the MacDaras are in modern day North Carolina where they still protect the Heartstone.
The four sons of the MacDara clan, Alec, Grant, Ramsay, and Ross, as well as their parents Sarinda, and Emrys, high chieftain of all the clans, are transplanted to North Carolina where they built a replica of their home, and operate a Highland Life and Legends themepark. Alec and Grant are married, but Ramsay and Ross remain eligible, despite the workings of Dwyn, a mysterious sage who manipulates the world around him.
Katie Jenson is on a sabbatical from teaching archeology at Princeton and, after losing her beloved father recently, just wants a respite at the shore. But fate has stepped in in the form of a brawny hero with a Scottish accent who has come upon Katie after she runs her car off the road. His name is Ramsay, and with few words, he slings Katie over his horse, and rides off with her to his home. Katie is stunned, angry, and confused by this behavior and makes no bones about it. Meeting Ramsay’s rather interesting family, who welcome her with open arms, confuses her even more. It’s obvious that they observe old traditions. However once settled in her room, after way too much to drink, she realizes just how strikingly handsome Ramsay is And how he ticks her off with his “I’m the man” attitude. In the morning, she has breakfast with his father, and heads off to arrange for her car to be repaired.
Ramsay is dumbstruck by the stubborn, outspoken, but beautiful Katie. He fights his attraction, but it’s difficult when his father and Dwyn manipulate him and Katie until it becomes clear that something is going to change. Emrys threatens Ramsay, Katie defends him, and they soon find themselves married. But it doesn’t end there, despite what Katie feels is not a legal union. She ignores the warning to “keep to the path”, storms off, and awakens in eighth century Scotland with her braw, Highlander husband, who, it seems, is the leader of the clan.
KATIE’S HIGHLANDER is book three in the Highland Protector series. It’s a fun read with great characters and obviously well researched. Do read the previous two books, SADIE’S HIGHLANDER and JOANNA’S HIGHLANDER to find out more about Ramsay’s family.
This is the third book in the series and I'm loving the series it's very hard to find a good time travel book/series this is one of the good ones I'm glad they decided to stay in the past it seemed like the best fit for them both especially since Katie is an archeologist I can't wait to see more from them, when they get to visit the future .and visit their family
ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The book starts off with a recap of previous installments in the series in order to bring the reader up to speed so that this installment can be read as a standalone without the reader being completely lost. Recapping how the family ended up in the future. Also informing the reader as to why Ramsay is a bit reluctant to fall in love.
This book starts off a little slow but once the action starts, there is no let up. I found myself unable to put it down once I was absorbed in it. I love a good time travel romance, throw in a little bit of Scotland and Druids and I am in. I will be purchasing the other installments in this series as soon as possible.
I will admit that the cover caught my attention, along with the synopsis, and I didn't realize this was part of a series. The good news is that you don't really have to read the others in order to understand this one. The author did a fairly good job of explaining the premise and why Ramsey was a bit of a time traveler. Now, I did love the time travel aspect and I thought the chemistry between the Ramsey and Katie was awesome. The main problem I had was that the plot itself was just so slow. Throughout most of the book, there wasn't a whole lot going on and I was a bit bored, to be honest. I did get more interested when they both traveled back in time, but I quickly lost interest because, again, not much was happening. I didn't really understand why they were sent back there. I never did get it. And the ending was a bit meh. This was an okay read, but I wasn't overly thrilled with it.
This was my first time reading any of the Highlander books in this series. I was interested from the very first chapter. Katie is funny, focused, and the perfect match for a tall and stubborn Highlander. I am always looking for a good romance and this was exactly right. It had humor, history, and passion. What more could a reader want? Don't worry that you have to read the whole series to know what is going on. This book works just fine as a stand alone. I am very much looking forward to reading up on how the other brothers met their wives.
Maeve didn't disappoint with Katie and Ramsay's story. It was just as hot and exciting as the others were. I can't wait for more from Maeve.
I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an review. I really struggled with the beginning of this book and almost DNF’d it. But once it got going it was hard to put down. I love me some highlanders and. Time travel. The book was peppered with authentic sounding Gaelic which lent it some character. I read Outlander and none of the words used were the same. So I don’t know. I enjoyed reading about the Druid culture and the clans. If you want to go back in time read this book I enjoyed it. This is my first book by this author. I will go back and read the first two books in the series. I didn’t care for the vision sharing at the end. It was telling not showing. The epilogue didn’t really center around the couple. I didn’t get anything from it.
This book has a great storyline but something was lacking. Katie and Ramsay are brought together by the Scottish goddesses, but it didn’t seem like they bonded all that well. They were always at odds with each other, especially Katie who really needs to control her temper! Yet with all the stilted conversation that didn’t pull them forward, they fall in love with each other. Loved the storyline, didn’t love the flow of the book.
A modern day time travel romance between Ramsey a Highland protector and Katie who had a car accident and was rescued by Ramsey.
Katie and Ramsey is caught up in an ancient Druid ceremony and was sent back to 900 Scotland where they begin to fall in love but Katie wants to go back home and Ramsey wants to stay will they find what they both want?
Good story drama and passion romance.
Voluntarily reviewed.
Katie's Highlander is the third book in the Highland Protectors series. I read the first one, but missed the second.
Ramsey is a Highland Protector. He's been tasked with protecting an ancient druid stone. He comes across a blonde in a car accident one night and takes her to his family home so she can get help. Katie is an archaeologist who recently lost her father. They end up bound in druid marriage ceremony and Katie is not amused. Ramsay is more resigned to his fate and warms to it quickly deciding he's not really too sorry it happened. They end up sent back in time to assist in a decision which will affect the bloodline of the future protectors.
Katie and Ramsay were very likable characters. They were kind and considerate of each other even when wrestling with their future. I'm not much on time travel romance, but I actually enjoyed this book because I liked Ramsay and his family so much.
Ramsey Macdara is quiet and solemn. He comes across a wreck one night on his ride through the Highland Life and Legends Park. Katie is hanging in her sunroof upside down and seems to be stuck. The Highlander and modern archeology major have a lot in common, but can her fire and spark for life quell his constant brooding? What happens when ancient life conflicts with the desire to be safe in the future.
This is my first book by Maeve Greyson. It tells the story of a Scottish highlander family from the 900s A.D. They are protectors for the Druid goddesses. The book focuses on the 3rd son, Ramsay. He had been deceived by a woman and now has no interest in finding love. He happens upon Katie who has crashed her car and is in distress. He rescues her and brings her to his family's castle. He offers to help her get her car repaired by a gentleman that he knows very well. Katie's only interest is getting out of the town and on her way. Ramsay arranges things so she must stay with him. Chaos ensues when Ramsay's ill father gets involved and they are thrust back into the 900s in Scotland. The story continues on with their life in this ancient time and how their love blooms. I won't spoil the happily ever after but it is guaranteed.
This book was well written, flowed easily and told a great story. My only criticism is that as I am direct descendant of the Abernethy's of Scotland, the name is spelled incorrectly in the book. It is spelled the American way, "Abernathy". The Scots spell it with one A and two E's.
I really liked this book and I will look for the author's other works in the future.
This was my first time reading a time travel/historical romance novel and first time reading this author. I thought the book was well written and have a very cute love story between the main characters. I didn't know like the time travel aspect as much as I thought I would so that is my own personal opinion. I also had a hard time with all the Scottish brogue. This book gets three chilli peppers of hotness! Thanks for the ARC!
Transplanted, along with his family, from his medieval castle in the Scottish highlands and the year 900 A.D. to modern day North Carolina, Ramsay MacDara is an enigma to say the least. He's a member of the MacDara clan, an ancient druid family responsible for protecting the heartstone, an ancient relic that is the key to humanity's need for love and hope to progress. When out for a late night ride on his horse, Ramsay encounters Katie, stuck in her wrecked car, and rescues her. Due to the late hour, he brings her back to his family's castle, attached to the Highlands-themed amusement park his family runs. Archaeologist Katie knows authentic history when she sees it and has many questions, which Ramsay attempts to dodge, though as a protector, he generally does not lie, he must in this instance to protect the heartstone. Having just recently gotten out of a relationship with a cold fiance who really only wanted his money, Ramsay thought he'd be married by now and is thinking he'll just remain unattached. Even though protectors are meant to love and be loved, he figures he has two brothers who are married and have children who'll be the future protectors, so it doesn't really matter if he finds love or not.
Katie is baffled to be rescued by an attractive man on horseback and in full highland dress, carrying a spear no less, but her archaeological curiosity is peaked by his archaic way of speaking and then by his home, which she recognizes the genuine medieval elements of, and the ancient Gaelic symbols carved on the spear's hilt. Ramsay's father, Emrys, high chief of all the druid clans, is not exactly the most lucid person all the time after his stress filled life and the leap through centuries, but he has seen Katie in his frequent visions and he expects her to be joined with his son--and has no problems sharing this information with her, leaving Ramsay with lots of explaining to do. When Ramsay is informed that Katie has been sent for him, he's pretty annoyed. Sure he'd like to get to know her, but on his own terms and without any matchmaking. Katie is just passing through temporarily until her wrecked car is repaired, but Ramsay finds he doesn't want her to leave. But when he's forced to explain the truth to her, will there be any way to stop her running for the hills? When the two are cast back in time together, their fledgling acquaintance is forced to develop quickly and may run into even more snags when Ramsay is happy to remain in the past.
So I'm not big on time travel usually (excluding Outlander, of course), but encountering hot highlanders plunked down in modern times was so original, I was intrigued. Even Ramsay's inner monologue is written in a Scottish brogue style, which was a bit annoying to read sometimes, but it helped me keep in mind that Ramsay is from not only a different country, but a much older century, and was raised there until age 16, so it's very much who he is. Honestly, Katie was a right little witch for much of the book, but to be fair, I'm not sure I would've handled the situation any better. I just felt like at times Katie was a bit of an overly exaggerated caricature of the 'modern woman.' It also bothered me that Katie and Ramsay never discussed his ex-fiancee. She was mentioned by his dad as the "demonness" so Katie definitely knew about her and it would've made sense in the development of Katie and Ramsay's relationship as a discussion they should have, yet she's just never mentioned again.
For me I think the ending was a little contrived and slightly less than satisfying, but it was still a happy one and I'm interested to see where Ms. Greyson takes this series next. This trope isn't usually my thing, but I want to read the other installments of this series now because they seem so different and original.
I received a complimentary ARC via NetGalley. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Modern day woman time travels to Scotland historical era.
Her Scottish warrior has a heavy brogue and it was a bit hard for me to get into the book because of the dialog.
But that could just be me.
