I seem to have stumbled upon a few books in the last twelve months with ‘lie’ in the title and narrated by unreliable teenagers, or teenagers that have done something questionable.
We Told Six Lies - the latest offering to make its way to my read list has a little of both. It also explores mental health and the impact it can have, not just on the person with the condition, but also people around them.
With a blend of past and present, first, third and a type of breaking the 4th wall narration, this book is likely to keep you on your toes. It was a little confusing at times trying to remember whose turn and what tense, and with the constant changes with each chapter, I couldn’t really settle in to a good, consistent reading rhythm.
In the end the story was okay, but perhaps with all the lie books I’ve read lately, I’ve overdone it, like a radio song on high rotation. Or maybe this one just didn’t speak to me.
Thank you to Victoria Scott, Entangled Publishing LLC, and NetGalley for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Meh. ' That about sums it up for me. I have never read any of this author's previous books.
This story for me just just ok. Yes there was a twist, but I found it pretty predicable and a little obvious. It wasn't a bad story, it was actually a very good premise, but it just didn't deliver as much as I thought it was going to. I may have just had very high expectations of the story. In the end it just fell flat to me.

Thank you to the Entangled Teen and NetGalley for the E-arc copy of this novel.
We Told Six Lies is an strange and dark tale that will leave you at the end wondering how the hell you got there. I found myself wrapped up in this novel. It is a dark and at times unpredictable story of layers of lies. The narrator is so unreliable that you are left wondering is the truth the truth or is it just another lie. I will say I did like the novel. I would have given it 4 stars, but it has a lot of sexual content for young adult and personally think it should be listed as New Adult. Secondly, the characters had names that were unrealistic and confusing to pronounce which made the flow of the sentences feel weird. Just petty things that otherwise distract from the book.
Where do The Lies end and the truth begin? We Told Six Lies is a taut thriller. Cobain’s voice resonates through the telling of his and Mollys tumultuous romanace. Bad boy falls in love with a wild girl. The girl disappears...who took Molly?
Thank you to Netgalley and Entangled Teen for the advanced copy of We Told Six Lies by Victoria Scott. I'm still a little unsure of how exactly I felt about this book. Was it the best YA thriller I've ever read? No. But it was intriguing enough to keep my attention, and made it difficult for me to put down. (In fact, I stayed up late one night to finish the book.) I didn't see the ending coming, and was surprised with the twist that came with it. The one thing that I didn't like about this book was how sexual it was, especially for a young adult book. I definitely don't consider myself a prude, but as someone who was reading YA at what I would consider as a young age, it's alarming to me that this book would be on the YA shelves. As a public librarian, I'm a firm believer in letting children read what they want to read, but books like this make me rethink that thought process, which is disappointing. I would give this book 2.5 starts, so I'm rounding up to 3 for my rating!
This Was a quick read and managed to hold my interest. From the beginning I was pretty sure I KNEW the twist, well I was half right at least. My issue is that even though it wasn’t predictable, the twist was so painfully unrealistic that it ruined the book for me. I did love the building of sociopathic characters. They cast may not have been very likeable, but they were interesting. Sometimes that’s more important.
We Told Six Lies is a book that you won't be able to put down. It is also a book where the ending can make or break it.
Cobain and Molly have a really messed up relationship so when Molly goes missing, it's easy for people to suspect Cobain. But there are so many lies. Told by so many people. It is difficult deciding who to believe, but even more problematic is deciding who you want to believe.
Remember how many lies we told, Molly? It’s enough to make my head spin. You were wild when I met you, and I was mad for you. But then something happened. And now you’re gone.
But don’t worry. I’ll find you. I just need to sift through the story of us to get to where you might be. I’ve got places to look, and a list of names. The police have a list of names, too. See now? There’s another lie. There is only one person they’re really looking at, Molly.
And that’s yours truly.
This was an unpredictable read for me, which I appreciated. I thought I knew where it was heading but that twist at the end got me! It's been a while since I've read a book about teenage romance, I forgot how difficult it was dating as a teen!

I think this book had the potential to be really great. The problem for me was that it took way too long to get to the point of the story. It just dragged on and on without something to really hook me. Towards the end, it got better. But not til the very end.
The Quick Cut: A boy desperately searches for answers to where his girlfriend has disappeared as he quickly becomes the primary suspect.
A Real Review:
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for providing the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Everyone loves a good suspense story. Throw out a curious situation, some bad tidings, and a lack of an alibi - then you've got the beginnings of any great tale. These are the elements found in the latest book by Victoria Scott.
Cobain loves his girlfriend Molly more than anything else in his life. However, when she disappears and Cobain is brought in by the cops - the situation around her sudden disappearance only continues to make him look worse. The more facts get changed on him, the more he appears to be the one who made her go. Did Cobain really make his girlfriend disappear and if so, why can't he remember it?
The book is told in 4 parts, with two narrators: Cobain and Molly (with some chapters in the past, some in the present). I like the way these chapters are laid out because they truly do unravel the mystery in such a way to make you question what's being said. Watching Cobain lose himself in the disappearance and then start to question how well he knew Molly was a fun ride once part 2 began.
You're not meant to like these characters and that's the genius of it. Molly lies to everyone (including her boyfriend) and keeps big secrets in the process. Contain is disliked by his peers and tries to lay low, but he doesn't exactly do anything to make you feel compelled to love him. In fact, he's written to come off as halfway to stalker status.
Even with a slow start, this thriller about a missing girl offers a surprising end and plenty of twists.
My rating: 4 out of 5
Young love is hard, y'all. All those emotions and hormones and stuff running wild. It's easy to see how feelings could get out of control. But how far is too far?
Molly is missing. Just disappeared. And of course, the first place the police look is at her boyfriend Cobain. But he's just as perplexed as the authorities are. He would never hurt her. After all, she's his everything. Before Molly came into his life, he was just existing as he wandered through life. Molly brought the light to his world. And now she's gone.
Cobain is determined to find out what happened to Molly. He knows more than what he's told the police, and he has a suspect list. Did he really know Molly, though? What secrets was she hiding from him?
There's A LOT going on with this story. It's told from two different perspectives as well as shifting from past to present. Surprisingly, though, it's easy to follow and suspenseful enough to keep you reading until the twisty end.
We Told Six Lies by Victoria Scott
I have to say I really enjoyed this book! It was such a roller coaster ride. I can usually figure out what's going on and who the bad guy is and I couldn't figure this one out till the very last minute! It was a little confusing with all the flash backs but I just kept going and Hoping it would come back around and it did!

I loved this book! The full review will be posted soon at kaitgoodwin.com/books! Thank you very much for this wonderful opportunity to connect books to their readers!
When Cobain meets Molly, he is drawn to her at once. Molly also likes him a great deal. But neither is honest with the other. When Cobain tells Molly he loves he, she breaks up with him. Molly disappears and all signs point to Cobain being responsible. There are a few twists that I didn’t see coming. I’m thankful to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Who is this author and why haven't I heard of her before? No, seriously...this book just completely rocked me. It's rocked me so hard that I'm sure to have a book hangover for at least another couple of days. Wow....Just....WOW!!!!!
Cobain isn't exactly liked. Ok, lets face it, he's made fun of by his peers and tries sticking to the shadows as best as he can. Until one day, a girl sees him. No...she doesn't just see him, she...finds him. Now, it's his turn to find her. Cryptic? You bet. Because there's no way in hell I'm giving away any part of this masterpiece.
Molly is determined. For what? Eh...I'm not spoiling that one. Nope. Let's just say that she's completely focused and is willing to sacrifice in order to get it. That is until she's forced to...stop. Forced to just...be. How far would you go to just, be?
This is probably one of the hardest reviews I've had to write. Why? Because there are so many things that you need to read for the first time. Is this book YA? Yes. But I also a thriller that borderlines dark. Since I've never read this author before and don't know if this is her normal genre, I can only comment about this one. She nailed it!!! In fact, she nailed it so much so that I may need to start stalking....I mean following her. That's not creepy, right?
We told six lies is a well thought out story with developed believable characters.
Cobain is the odd kid at school. And molly is the new girl. Both are looking for a fresh start.
What initial seems like a teen romance becomes a thriller after Molly is taken. Cobain is a suspect and he doesn't understand why, until he discovers Molly has been telling lies to him as well as everyone else
We Told Six Lies follows Cobain, a teen boy who is socially awkward and isolated, leading to him being on the outskirts of both his family and peers at school. He has a pretty mundane existence until he meets Molly Bates, who pays him attention and captivates him. So begins, an extremely twisted and tumultuous relationship. Everything seems normal until one night, Molly goes missing...and the prime suspect is no other than her loving boyfriend, Cobain.
Everyone seems to think he is somehow responsible, the police, his peers and his family. Nothing seems to add up...but does Cobain have something to do with Mollys disappearance? Or is he innocent?
The first thing I have to mention, which is at the centre of the novel, is Cobain and Mollys relationship. While usually I can't help but root for the main couple, I just found their relationship super bizarre. He's obsessive and a borderline stalker, whilst she is constantly lying and putting on a facade. Now I get why they both act the way they do but there was something about both of them together that just didn't fit for me.
Another major theme in the story is lies or deception. Many of the characters wear a mask, including Molly, which leads to even more mystery. This is also true for Cobain, who is such an unreliable narrator. I wasn't sure if he was suffering from split personality disorder or some other mental health issue as he has blackouts, fits of rage and has trouble controlling his emotions.
I had to suspend my disbelief a little whilst reading this book as some things felt a bit cliched and convenient but I did feel compelled to finish the book anyway. Just something to keep in mind!
At first, I thought I had the plot figured out but I have to give kudos to Victoria Scott here and admit, she kept me guessing! The plot is quite slow to start off with but picks up gradually leading to a tense and surprising ending. I was satisfied with the big reveal and I think it makes up for the pacing issues.
Overall, the suspense and reveal was the highlight of this book for me, because the romance fell flat for me and I didn't really connect with any of the characters. However I would still recommend this book if you want a more unconventional thriller and an explosive ending.
We told six lies a perfect name for this book! If contain and molly didn’t tell those lies would things have been different ? Would their lives have been normal ? Who will ever know ? What we do know for sure is this book puts you through every emotion and hits the nail on the head ! You will find romance, erotica, thriller, murder and mystery! What more could you want ?! I couldn’t stop reading tho book, and I’m sure my heart rate is sky high because the ending is so thrilling I wanted to scream out loud ! This will not disappoint! You fall in love with Cobain and Molly and I promise you will not expect what happens when all those lies come crashing together !
A little far fetched and a lot of jumping around, but it was still a fun read. There were some parts of the story, take Molly’s dad for instance, that had some solid potential, but was never really elaborated on. Cobain painted a beautifully tragic portrait of Molly that I would have loved to see more layers of. I dig the nod to Nirvana!
I'll take "Absurd names in the typical YA novel" for $800, Alex.
Cobain
Holt
Rhana
Jet
Davea
Nixon
Why is this a trend in YA novels? I believe this book sets a new literary record with six such names.

2.5 STARS ⭐
This was just an alright read for me, a slightly above average YA thriller holding my attention until the last few chapters. Once the twist was revealed I kinda lost interest in how it would ultimately play itself out.
Basically this is your typical girl goes missing and the boyfriend, being the main suspect, sets out to find out what happened to her.
I must admit, although I thought I had the mystery figured out a dozen different times, I was never even close to the truth. That being said, the reveal was still a letdown. I think I feel that way because this same twist has been done many times and way better. I recall one book with this same twist that made me sit up gasping because it was such a shock leaving my mind reeling, compelled to re-read the book to see what clues I missed.
I feel like a lot of this story was spent trying to lead the reader in the wrong direction leaving me with a sense that I'd been manipulated rather than stimulated.
Lastly, I have no idea what the title has to do with this story.
