This was an interesting read. While I don't agree with everything with the Montessori way, it still provided things that I will definitely incorporate into my parenting. Simone Davies did a great job of explaining things and saying them in a way that is easy to understand and implement.
I absolutely love Montessori and although my daughter isn't developmentally a toddler yet I look forward to rereading this book then. I am a kindergarten teacher and there are lots of great ideas for things I can do in my classroom.
Gives parents the basics of the Montessori way and ideas to help their toddler further grow and develop.
I am very interested in learning more about Montessori education. Great book and great tips and ideas.
This is a must have for any family with young children who are interested in the Montessori method. Davies breaks down each concept in an understandable way, making implementation a breeze. The illustrations are gorgeous and the photographs are perfect to further explain visually what the author is saying. I would recommend this book for anyone with young children or who works with young children.
It was an extremely interesting read. The book follows Maria Montessori’s principles of raising a free and responsible child by helping your toddler discover the world with all its wonders. The activities focus on practical aspects of daily life e.g. setting up the child’s room to foster sensory development, coordination and sense of order. Well-designed and clear, the book will be appreciated by new parents seeking practical guidance into how to implement Montessori principles at home.
Highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley and Workman Publishing Company for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion.
I knew very little of Montessori methods prior to this books so I learned a lot that I want to try with my 3 year old. I wish I'd had this book when my 5 year old was born.
If I were to recommend a single book on how to raise your child Montessori-style, this would be it. The book includes important insights on the Montessori method and lifestyle, as well as on positive discipline or non-violent communication. In addition, it is full of practical information about toddler activities.
There is information to glean from this, but Montessori isn't for everyone. For the specific audience I think it will be welcome.
A great resource for parents! The Montessori Toddler gives a good introduction to the Montessori method while providing so many ideas for activities and useful information parents.
I had very basic prior knowledge of Montessori before reading this book. And as the mother of a 2 year old - this book was so fantastic at outlining child development as well as practical ways to encourage exploration and creativity in my child. I have already recommended this book to all my mom friends and have a physical copy myself! Great information and direction for stay at home moms trying to make the most of the time with their little ones!
The Montessori Toddler is a visually attractive book that contains ten chapters, a small section of real stories and quotes from Montessori families, and an appendix.
I am a teacher who has been educated in traditional teaching methods. In my traditional education, we were briefly taught about Maria Montessori and her ideology for children. I have toured Montessori schools before. I was vaguely familiar with the ideas and guidelines used in the Montessori approach when I picked up this book. This book includes a brief introduction to the history of the Montessori method, as well as examples of toys/furniture/equipment commonly found in Montessori environments.
Davies did an excellent job of providing practical steps for the parent to begin incorporating into the home environment. While this book is targeted to toddlers, there was much information that could be applied to older children as well.
I personally appreciated the boxes labeled "To Practice" that provide a simple summary of the previous chapter and ways for the parent to begin to put the lessons into practice. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is even remotely interested in learning more about the Montessori method.
I enjoyed this book. I have a limited knowledge of Montessori teaching. I know what it is and how it works but I've never researched how to put it into practice with children. Not having children myself, I never needed that knowledge but I do work with children and I like to know the current trends. I thought this was helpfully written for parents and a good overview of what it is and how to put it into everyday practice.
I really enjoyed this book! It was designed beautifully and easy to read. While I'm not a "Montessori" parent or practice a lot of the principles, I found this book to be a great introduction and gave me a lot of great ideas, insights and practices for parenting - especially when it comes to learning and education.
As a early childhood teacher and mom of a toddler I loved this book. The illustrations and pictures provided great detail into the activities presented and I loved the format of this book. It is well written and organized. It helped me better understand the many feelings and emotions of my toddler and the advice presented is very applicable both in my classroom and with my children!
This is a principled and beautifully designed manual for how a toddler's brain works and how you can work with the toddler's brain. When I say beautifully designed, I mean in word and in visual design. Lovely.
I was familiar with the principles of Montessori before reading this book. However, the book is well-organized, filled with activities, gorgeously designed and concisely explains Maria Montessori's principles for the modern reader.
The knowledge the reader gains builds on itself, so I would recommend reading it cover to cover. However, it's ordered in such a way that you can pick and choose your pages. Very Montessori of her!
Readers should know that the principles of Montessori discourage punitive punishment. Therefore, the language helping the reader understand how to reframe one's reaction to a toddler temper tantrum can frustrate with its woo-woo-ness. Press on, reader.
I am not 100% Montessori in my thinking because I do think that children need some form of discipline that they can expect as a consequence in some cases. Nevertheless, thinking in the way that Simone Davies explains ("What could be the reason for this reaction of my screaming two year old?") helps me remember that these kiddos are learning at every turn. Everything is a learning opportunity.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me an advanced digital copy. This is a fair review that I'm in no way obligated to provide.
I read this book when my two year old was giving me fits. I was so refreshed by the time he got up from his nap!
It is such a good reminder of what the strengths of toddlers are and the great things about this time of life. I got several strategies of how to phrase directions to him or deal with naughty behavior. It also verified some of the other things that I am already doing and I can't wait to try some of the ideas! The author has authority, but allows you to pick and choose what you want to use from the book, rather than making the material seem unattainable.
Unfortunately, I was unable to open this file, which is very disappointing as I have recently started work in a Montessori establishment.
I loved this book! It was such a strong comprehensive review of how to bring montessori learning home for families. I loved the recommendations, images, and way the author explained the information.
Came into this with just the cursory information of Montessori and perhaps a dash of skepticism that I would get much out of this, but it was phenomenal. Lots of practical advice to implement immediately with pre-school/toddlers. While I don't intend to transform our home into a Montessori school with trays of activities or get rid of picture books with fantasy elements (our son loves books about dragons), I got a lot out of how to speak to your child and things to keep in mind about his development to reframe my expectations and patience.
