Getting Hot with the Scot by Melonie Johnson is hilarious, heartfelt, and sexy as sin. I loved the characters. Both the main leads and minor ones. Each one had a part in this book that brought it to life. I was instantly swept away by this romance.
Cassie is a young woman who loves to read romance novels. She dreams of one day having that romance in her life. So when she and her friends finally go on their European vacation trip, Cassie hopes for just that. A box of condoms for that one foreign romantic affair and a bracelet to fill with charms from their travels are part of Cassie's souvenirs.
Logan Reid is a sexy built Scotsman. He is also knpown as the biggest prankster. One such prank episode unplanned happened when he met Cassie. A beautiful American woman who got the better of him. She caught his attention with everything she has and is. Logan struggles with keeping his head clear when she's around him. And he cannot stay away from her. She pulls him in like a magnet.
Logan has father issues. Those issues lead him to not wanting marriage.
Cassie wants a foreign hot affair. But she may just get more than she bargained for.
Both fall for each other, but where their paths will lead them is a whole load of trouble.
Overall, I highly recommend this romantic tale. I felt like I was right there with Cassie and her friends. Logan and his best mate also made the story fun. Hot charming men plus, outgoing smart women who know what they want is an entertaining plot. Risks, secrets, lies, and love are found here.
Getting Hot with the Scot is book one in the Sometimes in Love series and my first read by this author. I loved this wonderfully charming and flirty story. Great character, the interaction was sexy, romantic and fun and the storyline was so much more than I expected. Overall a great read and one I would recommend.
Great romance with a smart heroine and characters with good depth. Can't wait to read more from this series and get to know the characters even more.
I received a copy of this ebook for free from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This is a good read by a new author. I would recommend it for lazy day reading.
I liked this book. It was well scripted and even clever in parts. I enjoyed Logan and Cassie as individuals (Hooray! They are individuals!). I appreciated the vulnerability and growth they have through the story, even though they start off very rocky. The hot scenes are hot, but not overly so! There's even a "fade to black" moment, which is rare for a romance novel.
Worth picking up!
I received an e-ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Getting Hot with the Scot is about an American named Cassie who is vacationing in Europe with her best friends. She wants a hot vacation one night stand, and she meets Logan, a sexy red-headed Scottish dude. Full disclosure: I have a major thing for gingers. My first crush was a little red-headed boy in kindergarten, and I managed to fall in love with and marry a ginger. All that to say, I am predisposed to love a book with a ginger hero.
Back to the book, Cassie and Logan meet when he plays a prank on her for his web series. She refuses to sign the release but they end up banging anyway. Logan kinda creeps on her for the rest of her vacation and they have more sexytimes. He never mentions the release but she finds out anyway and is pissed. Cassie goes home without saying goodbye and she signs the release and goes home to Chicago. Logan ends up in Chicago for work and he tracks her down. They make up and there’s another misunderstanding or two and then they live happily ever after.
I enjoyed this book. Logan was funny and sexy, but a bit of a creeper. I felt like he should have been more honest with Cassie upfront. Another less-than-cool aspect was Cassie’s best friend gives Logan Cassie’s number without her consent. It helped the story move along but it was a violation of privacy. On the other hand, I liked Cassie and how she grew from “I’m not a relationship person” to “I think this could really be something,” in a real, honest way. And here’s a tiny spoiler — I really liked how she turned the drama over the prank and her romance novel reading into a story about strong women who read romance. I think there are more of us out there than the world would expect.
I give this book 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 for Goodreads. If you’re looking for a very light, no-angst, funny read, pick this one up for sure. Also, the book very obviously set up the rest of the series, pointing a big neon sign at the next couple and giving clues to another friend’s story as well. It was almost distracting from the main story, but I enjoyed the side characters, and I am excited to read the next book in the series.
I enjoyed Getting Hot with the Scot and found Melonie Johnson’s writing entertaining, sexy, funny and sweet. Overall, I thought this book was a cute read! Wacky humor and silly banter, a zany group of girlfriends (and a best mate) who had each other’s backs, and one couple who could-and did!-light a fire with the wild sparks between them...I don’t think it gets much better!
A wonderful laugh out loud romance about friendships and finding love. Cassie is a reporter that is traveling throughout Europe with her friends and while in Scotland meets Logan. Being career oriented, she thinks a one night fling is all she needs. Logan doesn't realize what has hit him with this beautiful American woman. Together can the find a true lasting love? Thanks NetGalley for an ARC for my honest review! Can't wait to read the stories of her friends!!
This was a cute book about two people who meet in an unusual way but feel a connection. Logan is a prankster who is trying to get a tv deal that would change his life. When he winds up kissing Cassie, but she refuses to sign the release form so he can air it on his show Shenanigans, he decides he is going to turn on the charm until she signs it. As they spend time together, he forgets about the release form and realizes that he actually likes her. She was involved with him in order to check one thing off of her list, an affair with a foreign person. The only problem, she likes him a little too much.
When Cassie finds the release form, she believes that he was only with her to get what he wanted, so she signs it and leaves the country to head back to Chicago. When fate intervenes and Logan ends up in Chicago working for the same company, he decides that he wants another chance and asks her to let him explain. The relationship is fast moving, but it is sweet. I fell for Logan and his friend Theo. I can't wait to read the next book in this series and see what happens to Bonnie and Theo.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.
Cassie Crow is on a European vacation with her best friends when she meets Logan Reid in a Scottish castle. He is taping his prank TV show Shenanigans. Cassie is not amused and refuses to sign the release form, but she finds Logan attractive and soon they are having a vacation fling. After Cassie returns to the U.S. Logan follows when his TV pilot is picked up coincidentally in Chicago where Cassie is one air talent for a local morning show. She and Logan put their differences behind them and are getting along until the video surfaces and Cassie is embarrassed by the content and breaks up with Logan. They reunite on Christmas eve and are engaged on New Years.
This book was almost a DNF after the first part where she has having the "paranormal" experience in the Scottish castle. I'm not a fan of fantasy, but once that part was over, it turned into a contemporary romance. Cassie was a little whiny and self centered, and Logan was a bit dense about women, but they were charming together.
Getting Hot with the Scot by Melonie Johnson is contemporary romance with a sexy edge that melts concepts of romantic lit and erotica into a very unique cocktail. Cassie Crow and her affluent bevy of girlfriends are in the middle of a fabulous European vacation that is spanning multiple countries. With Spain and Italy in the rear view mirror, the crew's next adventure takes place in a venerable Scottish castle for whiskey tastings...and possibly a glimpse of a hot Scotsman wrapped inside a kilt. While each of the girls have their own side missions for vacay fun, Cassie simply needs to get laid. A hot foreign fling with a dashing young Euro will set things right so she can get back to Chicago and improve her role on one of Chi-Town's hottest talk shows. Cassie also has a love of books, particularly romance novels. While in the castle, this passion for romance causes her to fall for an unfortunate prank orchestrated by the internet's latest sensation, Logan fucking Reid. Logan is the worst: cocky, arrogant, self-centered...oh but that brogue...and that shock of red hair <fans self>. Maybe this vacation will have some heat after all now that the gingers have arrived.
From the outset, Getting Hot with the Scot has approximately 7,747 different characters that make various appearances throughout the proceedings. Some characters are more important than others of course, but it's hard to tell at first which ones (besides Cassie and Logan) will have any impact on their pursuit of love and self worth. More to the point, it seems several characters exist merely as filler to add more conversation while something "off camera" sets up for the next scene. Sure, this is something needed for television programs, but this novel could have been paced a little more succinctly. This is my first novel read by this author, so maybe the secondary, tertiary, or (looks up the "-ary" for 4)...quaternary characters are used elsewhere inside this universe, and that would be lovely, despite being rather crowded.
The story has an interesting approach towards conflict and tone. Conflict is obvious at the beginning, but is suddenly resolved about a third of the way through. Cassie and Logan manage to settle their differences and have a go at love after their first few experiences with lust. There is another attempt at opposition towards the end, however the true meat of the story seems to just be Cassie and Logan exploring beautiful countryside and waiting for the other shoe to drop. Unfortunately this makes a large portion of the novel feel like a stretch, with set dressing taking precedence over crucial moments in character progression. Cassie's love of books could have been better explored, and I would have gladly surrendered a few of Logan's Scottish history lessons for a greater development of Cassie's plan to improve literacy in her hometown. There's a good skeleton here, and a great heart to match, we could just stand to trim a little bit of fat from around the middle.
Verdict: Getting Hot with the Scot by Melonie Johnson is a comfortable, easy going modern romance that could hit you in all the right spots. Fun characters with a teeming helping of cute dialogue will satisfy readers looking for a good time with some unique European backgrounds. This novel is a banana split: pretty, sweet, and altogether enjoyable, just not a complete meal. Not everything needs to be a fat greasy steak...so save yourself some room for this one.

This was a delightfully fun romance and first book in the Sometimes in Love series by @meloniejohnson! Cassie Crow, a pop-culture reporter for a Chicago talk show, is on a once in a lifetime trip exploring Europe with four of her girlfriends. Her ultimate souvenir? A steamy hook-up with an international hottie. While exploring a castle in Scotland, she stumbles into a kilted Highlander with a sexy accent and thinks she might get her souvenir after all. Until she realizes the hot Highlander is internet prankster Logan Reid.
First off, give me ALL the romances where the main character is traveling on vacation with her best girlfriends! I really enjoyed Cassie’s character, especially how driven she was toward her career. I won’t spoil it, but she shifts her career path a bit and it made my book loving heart SO happy. And she’s a huge romance reader! Cassie is my kind of girl! I’ll admit, Logan kind of pissed me off a bit, there were a few times I thought “girl, you deserve better than this nonsense! Hot accent be damned!” But by the end I found myself rooting for their relationship. I can’t wait to see their characters pop up more in the other books!
I love that the Sometimes in Love series will follow more of Cassie’s friends that were featured in this story. You better believe I’m diving into Smitten by the Brit immediately!! Logan might not have been my cup of tea, but hello Theo!
Getting Hot with the Scot was a 4 star read for me! I highly recommend trying if you love fun, contemporary romances! Getting Hot with the Scot releases April 30th!
Getting Hot with the Scot is such a delightful and swoony rom-com. I enjoyed it very much. Cassie and Logan have great chemistry and their romance is just so darn cute. I also loved Cassie's group of friends and I am looking forward to their stories. If you love rom-coms, men in kilts, and a lot of swoon in your books, make sure to pick this one up!
Cassie Crow is on a whirlwind tour of Europe with her best friends, and one thing she’s promise herself while she’s on vacation, to hook up with a sexy man in Scotland. While on tour in a castle, Cassie gets lost and stumbles behind a secret wall to fall on top of a gorgeous man in a kilt!
Logan Reid is known for his hi-jinks show Shenanigans on the web. When a gorgeous woman literally falls on his lap, during one of his tapings, he goes for it with his Scottish accent to try to lure her into signing a release form for his show.
Cassie is trying to become a serious journalist back home in Chicago. She’s hoping to convince her boss about doing a morning show at the TV station she works for. Because of that, she snubs Logan, and does everything to avoid him, since she has no intentions of appearing on his show. The problem with this, is that they both have a serious chemistry that neither can avoid.
Returning back to Chicago, Cassie gets the good news from her boss, to do the morning show.
When Logan gets an offer to do a show back in the states, when he finds out that it’s in the same building Cassie works. Knowing his show will run for two months only, Logan has his work cut out, to romance the beautiful Cassie.
As this romance has its ups and downs, I can tell you it’s a fun story to read. Plus extremely sexy. Loved it.
Getting Hot with the Scot was a wonderful start to a new contemporary romance series with an amazing group of characters and a fantastic romance.
Cassie Crow and her four closest friends are fulfilling their dream of touring five countries five years after graduating college. While she’s supposed to be disconnected from her job, Cassie can’t help but worry about the meeting waiting for her where she hopes to convince her boss to move her from pop culture reporting to more serious topics. After Cassie stumbles upon a sexy Highlander in a kilt, she decides taking one night off from her worries couldn’t hurt. But the more time Cassie and Logan spend together, the clearer it becomes that what’s between them is more than just a fling.
Cassie is incredibly passionate about her work and hopes she can help make a difference through the reporting segments she wants to do. I admired her dedication to her work and I loved that one of the segments she hoped to do focused on literacy. Cassie is actually an avid romance reader which was something I loved about her as that’s not something I see too often in books.
Logan is a prankster who gained fame after creating a website called Shenanigans where he posts videos of himself committing various pranks. Logan’s dream is to have a sketch comedy style television show which he feels will legitimize his choice of career. I liked how motivated Logan was to turn his prank series into something more and I admired his drive and commitment to his work.
Cassie and Logan first meet when Cassie accidentally becomes part of one of Logan’s sketches. While initially Logan’s goal was to convince Cassie to sign a release form, he quickly began to fall for her leading him to set aside that goal. I enjoyed the playful banter in Cassie and Logan’s relationship and how the two were able to make each other laugh so easily. Their physical relationship was very sexy with some fantastic scenes. Both Cassie and Logan have a fear of commitment and it does cause problems in their relationship. I was happy though with the way they worked through those issues and managed to get their happily ever after.
Cassie’s friend group was quite possibly my favorite thing about this book. Bonnie, Sadie, Ana, and Delaney are all such amazing characters and I’m hoping we get a bit for all of the ladies at some point. Bonnie and Sadie definitely have books, Smitten by the Brit and Once Upon a Bad Boy respectively, but I would love to see Ana and Delaney get books as well.
Overall I really enjoyed Getting Hot with the Scot and I’m looking forward to reading the next book, Smitten by the Brit, soon.
What a fun romp of a romance. It has everything: romance, humor, kilts, and of course, Scotland. I couldn't ask for anything more! It might be a little steamy for some readers, but it was a well-written romance. I'll definitely be purchasing copies for my library. Thank you!!
My first introduction to this author and series, and it starts with the first book, with our characters both making their living as they work in media: she as an entertainment reporter and he as a web sensation with his series of off the wall jokes and scenes (think Jackass without the danger). Both are successful and content, if half a world apart. But Cassie has been itching for ‘more’ of late, she wants to be a real reporter talking about more than the next divorce or shocking outfit. Cassie is more than I expected when I first met her – a sucker for historic romance, sharp intellect, a good listener and always looking for the ‘story behind the story’. And ready to experience something different from her ‘usual’ days, she and her four friends have planned the trip of a lifetime through Europe -each has a leg of the trip – and each has a goal. Cassie, as one might expect from a younger ‘heroine’ has decided that a fling with a hot guy is just what she is looking for.
Logan lives in Scotland – a bit of an immature outlook where relationships are concerned, and his web series is based on outrageous practical jokes, some funnier than others. At heart, Logan is just living life and enjoying himself, and with plenty of hard work and a few uncommitted encounters as well as plenty of friends, his life is good. It gets markedly better when he encounters Cassie and her friends at a local (to him) pub. It’s not long before the two are flirting outrageously and Cassie gets her ‘fling’. Yet it is so much more – there is a chemistry here that neither can deny, and they actually enjoy one another on their way to something more.
Now, there were problems with the story and writing. Written in 3rd person POV, the switches between his and her perspective were frequent, not indicated and until a clear ‘voice’ for each character is recognizable – difficult to follow. No indications of scene breaks, as well as a fairly hefty dose of Scottish slang that could easily confuse and frustrate readers who had to constantly stop to look up the words as most didn’t intuit from sentence placement. And the lagging and dragging - several moments where nothing relevant happened, or was expended in making it clear who the ‘next couple’ would be with plenty of ‘dreamy’ moments, and not quite enough action had me wanting to skim, and the immaturity of BOTH Logan and Cassie had me frustrated with them frequently. It’s a lighthearted story that perhaps takes itself a bit too seriously, with characters that are easy to know despite their less-than-wonderful traits that both display. I’ve got the second and third to read and can only hope that the stories flow a bit more consistently.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I received an advanced copy of this book. In this book, Cassie Crow and her friends go to Europe for a vacation. She is focused on becoming a serious reporter, but while there she meets Logan, who is known for his pranks and his web show. He wants to make it on a network program US, so he needs to make inroads with the female market. He makes a video that could be embarrassing for Cassie, but good for him. Sparks continue to fly between them as he follows her to London and then to the US. This is a HOT romance and a great book!
What's not to love? We have a bunch of girls, okay women, on a lifetime vacation. We have fabulous settings, a fun bunch of characters and a hot Scot. Oh baby, that hot Scot! Yes, he has that whole pranks thing going but she just wants a vacation fling. This was a great story line that had some spicy parts and I totally loved it! A great escape read.
I really wanted to like this a lot. And there were parts of it I did like quite a bit. A vacation romance with a hunky Scottish hero, check! A vibrant group of female friends! Heyo!
In the end, the book as a whole didn't quite gel for me for a bunch of reasons. First of all, Cassie's up-and-coming in her career, and we see her talk about her work a lot, but only see her actually *doing* it once. This made her commitment to her career feel kind of removed and unreal. Also, the fact that she spends the first half of the book traveling with *four* of her friends got frankly confusing for me at times. I felt a little thrown into the deep end, having to work to try to keep track of the different women, when in the end, she really seems to only have a significant (on-page) relationship with one of them.
But where it really fell down for me was that it felt almost like 2 different books: during the traveling portion of the book, the bleak moment happens at about the halfway mark, then things get patched up. After a brief honeymoon period of sorts Stateside, there is another trip to Scotland whereupon the hero's personality undergoes this huge change that didn't pan out for me. A few introductions/revelations happen in the latter half of the book that seemed to just come out of the blue (including a late-introduced work villain for Cassie to contend with who apparently also had a seemingly random personality change from friend to foe regarding her).
I'm going to try the next one in the series and see where things go.
I received this ARC for my honest review.
I have to say, who isn't looking for a fling when touring Europe as a sing lady? hahaha
Cassie Crow took a trip to Europe with her best friends that they have been planning for years. Cassie wanted 2 things on this trip, fill her charm bracelet with charms from her trip and have one amazing night with a stranger. Her life has been focused on her carrier and not a relationship, so she just needs one night with a stranger to live out her hottest fantasies, like her romance books.
Logan Reid was a prankster and that is what he was doing when he ran into Cassie, but he knew something was different about this American. She would not make it easy for him to get what he needed to take his career to the next level and that was a signature to release the prank she was in. He chased her to get the form signed but turns out he was chasing her for something completely different. He didn't realize how he truly felt about her until it was to late and she had kicked him out.
I have to say this was a great book, the only reason I gave it 4 out 5 stars was that it was a little confusing when it went back and forth between point of views. I loved that it had both Cassie's and Logan"s views but it didn't make it clear right away whose you were reading when it switched.
I can not wait for book 2, Bonnie and Theo!!!! Congrats Melonie, great book!
