Can they navigate careers and a hot hook up?
"Getting Hot with the Scot" by Melonie Johnson
This was a fun contemporary romance with some sizzle reading adventure. The 'book blurb' gives you a wee hint of what is to come in this story... So fasten your seat-belt and get ready to travel. You will go across the "Pond" and you just may ride an emotional roller-coaster, too. Can you tell I really liked this story? I was gifted an ARC of this story from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my opinion of the story. Oh, you may be like me and not want a lot of detail in certain scenes... there are a few of them... and you may do what I do... I skip over them because it would be a shame to miss this story for the few pages you do not need written down in black and white. Happy Reading !!
This story get you from beginning, you want to know what happen next. Can't stop reading.
Logan and Cassie are great, loved both of them.
Story is well written.
Great book
I really enjoyed reading about Cassie and Logan. The way they met was intriguing and funny. These two seem to combust when they are together. This is a fun and sexy read that left me wanting to read more books by this author.
I read this author's two books out of order, but it was okay I still really liked them. This is her first. It is not as strong as the second, but good to see growth. I loved learning the Scots and seeing some traditional foods. The book was funny, and sweet, but a little light on character development.
Chicago Cassie was focused on her career, and aspired to breakout from her role as pop-culture commentator to that of a more serious journalist. However, she wanted to shed Chicago Cassie, while vacationing in Europe with her college besties, and allow Vacation Cassie to cut loose, be a little reckless, and find a foreign fling. A wrong turn and a hilarious meet-cute bring Cassie and Logan together, but could this fling turn into more?
I always love, when the hero and heroine begin their pursuit with very clear intentions, but then they change along the way. In Getting Hot with the Scot, Cassie was looking for one night of passion, while Logan was seeking a signature on a release form. At some point in the story, both Cassie and Logan got what they were after, but to my delight, the relationship did not end there. Johnson did a great job getting all the pieces to fall into place, which allowed this romance to continue even when the vacation was over, and I enjoyed getting a front row seat to all the action.
I sort of thought the book would wrap up shortly after Cassie's vacation ended, but the story continued, and allowed Johnson to further develop the characters. We learned more about why they avoided commitments, and we saw them work to overcome the obstacles, which were keeping them from getting their HEA, which I think a lot of readers will appreciate.
This was a fabulous rom-com. It was fun, sexy, witty, and even a little emotional. Johnson assembled a strong cast, and deftly laid the groundwork for subsequent books. I am already looking forward to the next book, after getting to see Bonnie and Theo interact and learning a little about their backgrounds. The conflict was on the weaker side, but I didn't care, because it was so obvious that Cassie and Logan belonged together, and I was rooting for them the entire time.
Other strengths:
• I loved getting to spend time in Scotland, London, and Chicago. We saw a few sights, ate a little local cuisine, and absorbed a bit of the culture.
• The female friendships in this book were fantastic. This group of five became a unit in college, but within the group we had two sets of lifelong besties. Cassie and Bonnie had been friends since the tender age of six - Cassie the Dianna to Bonnie's Anne, and the depth of their was obvious. It's also always fabulous to see a group of women supporting each other.
• There was some fun commentary regarding romance readers, and I liked the way Johnson worked it into the story. Remember: Smart women read romance.
• I loved Logan's family. His mother was a doll, and I adored my visit to his hometown. I am super curious about all the food and traditions they mentioned while we were there too.
Overall: I was thoroughly entertained by this debut, and am so excited that I found a new rom-com series to love. This book had me laughing, swooning, and smiling, and I can't wait to repeat those actions as I enjoy the other Sometimes in Love books.

This had a really interesting premise. It isn't a bad book but it's not right for me. I tend to hate lie of omission plots, and while I hung in there pretty far, I realized I wasn't going to be able to forgive the hero and root for an HEA, nor would I be able to stop side-eying the heroine and her friends. It seemed best to stop, instead of soldier on. Your mileage may vary. Despite having issues with the book, it was hard to stop reading it.
I can watch heroes do some pretty horrible things if I'm confident in their redemption arc and I can understand their motivations. In this case, Logan came across like any other entitled dudebro who engaged in a lot of questionable behavior and never had to deal with any consequences. While he may have started to see Cassie as something more, the whole reason he pursued her was to get her to sign the consent form so her footage could be on his show. Cassie kept declining to sign it and would only agree to go out with him because a) her friends are terrible and strong-armed her into it and b) he agreed not to bring it up on their date.
But then neither of them address the consent form or footage again, which was naive on Cassie's part. And I wasn't entirely sure why she didn't think to spin any resulting future press in a way that could help her journalism career, especially if she's the pop culture person. Meeting Logan and gaining behind the scenes access could have been a boon to her career.
A number of stranger danger no-nos happened: Her best friend gave Logan her phone number without her consent and behind her back. They mention their friends' dad is wealthy and hooked them up with a nice hotel. Have they never watched Taken? Do they not realize you never mention a connection to wealth, especially when you're traveling abroad?! And that it's not a wise idea to tell a guy you just met what hotel you're at in Scotland, no matter how much you want to bang him? Because of this slip, Logan is able to figure out where Cassie and her friends are staying in London, which is bad enough. He then follows her to London so he can get the consent form signed, instead of calling like a normal person, and tracks down her hotel. On top of that, he lies to the hotel clerk and says he's there to meet up with his friend's sister and wants to know what floor she's on. When the clerk rightly wouldn't disclose it, he asks for confirmation she's staying there and the clerk gives it and accidentally tells him the floor. This is such a huge violation. I couldn't get past it. Logan has no awareness of how predatory this is or how unsafe this makes Cassie. I don't care if he's the supposed hero. Men should never do this to women. Ever.
When Logan inevitably screw up, he's angry at everyone else when it's all his fault. But what really tipped me over the edge is that he realizes he doesn't know where Cassie lives. They've been together for at least a few days, including doing touristy things and the fact that she lives in Chicago NEVER came up?! I had no sense of an emotional connection between them or what they saw in each other. He was just another lame privileged white guy. He didn't have to grovel and barely apologized to Cassie. He gets his big break and she immediately forgave him for lying to her. I couldn't understand why she was so easy on him and this was the point when I had to set the book to the side.

Fun, is the first word that comes to mind to describe this one. A Scot in a kilt, a pop-culture reporter for a TV talk show and an element of "trying to be serious" only add to the mix that what make this book fun. Cassie, the report is trying to break away from the pop-culture aspect of her career and jump into serious reporting. While Logan, the man in the kilt, is charming and full of hijinks. Once he gets a taste of having Cassie in his life he knows it won't be enough to satisfy himself.
I have never actually read any of Johnson's work before - but I'm now a fan! The story is fun, has heart, and funny. There is a bit of the romantic twist involved but just the right amount..
... and just because I'm an obvious fan of The Little Mermaid (naming my dog Ariel and all), I love the ode to Disney! Disney fan at heart appreciates that one!
This is a fun contemporary romance with plenty of tropes to please - American & Scot fall in love, rock-star vibe hero, ambitious heroine trying to make a change in her career. I really enjoyed the characters in this one; alas, I'm just not that into the whole "hero can't deal with his feelings" as the thing keeping a couple a part. It's 2019 - read some Brene Brown and grow up. But that being said, I think this will be a crowd pleaser & I enjoyed the time I spent with it overall. I'm always down for a kilt
Getting Hot with the Scot (Sometimes in Love, #1) by Melonie Johnson... I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Melonie... and thanks to the publisher and #NetGalley for allowing me to preview it. The story of Logan and Cassie had all the feels...I laughed(out loud) and cried and went on their trip with them .... I loved the story of the five friends and their long planned vacation... I am hoping they will all get their own stories... I enjoy a book that can pull me in and make me feel part of the story.. this one did. All the twists and turns were fun ...enjoyed the steam... all leading to a very HEA.
Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Informative Funny Happily Ever After Easy-to-read Page-turner Steamy Entertaining Romantic Witty Wonderful characters Great world building
I loved this book. It was the kind of fun I didn't know I was needing. It was sweet, romantic and oh so entertaining. Melonie Johnson was a new author to me, and now she's in my top list thanks to this story. Logan and Cassie were amazing characters. I enjoyed their chemistry and how they evolved in the book. But I also loved Cassie's friends and Theo. The narrative rhythm and the scenery (described in the story) were perfect; and the dialogues were on point, full of wit and sass. Just how I love it.
I had the time of my life in this trip with Cassie and her friends, getting to know this hot and fun scot. Can't wait to read more from this author.
Up until the half-way point, this book was kind of boring. After it hit half-way, it became pretty interesting. I didn’t like how it was done in third-person, but it was like switching POVs without it saying anything.
I really enjoyed the romance between Cassie and Logan - definitely one for the books.
Copy kindly received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Whether or not it's me and my current reading mood lately, or the actual book itself, I'm not too sure. I'm just not really feeling this one and so I'm putting it down.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I love all things set in Scotland and this book didn’t disappoint!!! I was absolutely thrilled when I received this book because I didn’t know what to expect. It blew all expectation I had away!
Five friends go on a dream vacation and Cassie is looking for a hot guy to fulfill her other dream, hot sex. When she stumbles into the wrong room in a castle they are touring it seems she may have taken a step back in time. I was not a real fan of this book I found Logan completely immature through 90% of the book, I found him board line annoying. I like Cassie and her friends but I also found her some what immature. I thought they were in there twenties, but they acted like they were just out of high school with there antics. Towards the end of the book it did feel like they did grow up some however it seemed a little to late for me. There is a lot of sex but not a lot a chemistry. I did not find this book was for me.
Cassie Crow is on a whirlwind vacation in Europe with four of her friends. Following a whiskey tasting in Edinburg Castle, Scotland she loses track of her friends after a stop in a restroom. As she is wandering around the halls of the castle trying to find the library where her friends said they would be she stops to ask a woman for directions. Little does she know the woman is with a crazy website called Shenanigans. The directions take her to a room where she finds a kilted Scotsman time-traveling to the castle from the past. Can that be right? The encounter, including the super hot kiss she shares with the sexy Scot, is filmed for the website. So "No" she didn't meet a time-traveling Scot but a super sexy Scottish rogue from the present. He needs her signature to air the clip which will win him a lucrative TV contract. She doesn't need the embarrassment which could ruin her career. So, "No", she will not sign the contract.
Getting Hot with the Scot by Melonie Johnson is a super fun, sexy read. The hot Scot is Logan Reid. Not only he is hot he is charming and very likeable. I also enjoyed Cassie as she has such a good heart and strong determination. Anyone who enjoys hot, sexy stories with very likeable characters will totally enjoy this book.
I got the opportunity to read this amazing story through netgalley, (ARC). Being able to read new authors work is awesome. I'm happy to say that I loved this story. It was good, who wouldn't like to travel with a group of friends to another country in hopes to have a hot fling.
Cassie and Scot were meant to be, he's the hot SEXY Scottish guy she taught she wouldn't see again after his time traveling prank. Scot new to well that after that passionate kiss they had he wanted to see her again. All that changes.
This was the first book that I had read by this author! Oh my word did I love this book. I was hooked from the very beginning. I will be reading more from this author! I would give it a 5 star rating.
This was a new to me author and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I typically stay away from historical romances (including ones with hot Scots), but since this one was a contemporary romance featuring a hot Scot, I decided to give it a chance. I'll admit, in that first chapter, I almost stopped reading, thinking I must have gotten the wrong impression on the type book this was lol. I'm glad I kept reading though because I quickly found out how silly that assumption would have been, but it sure got me!
This was a funny, incredibly sexy, emotional read. I found tears in my eyes so often towards the end there when learning about Logan's Da and then the whole blow-up at the end there really made me sad (not that I didn't see that coming a mile away). I love books that get all of my emotions stirred up.
Cassie is one of the hosts of ChiChat, a Chicago morning talk show, but she's tired of only having the social scenes to cover and really wants to be taken as a serious reporter. She plans on having that conversation with her boss as soon as she's back from her 3 week vacation touring Europe with her best friends. One of her final stops of their trip is in Scotland and that's where she meets the sexy Scot, Logan.
Logan is the popular host/prankster for the online show, Shenanigans. But he too wants to be taken seriously and quit with all the pranks. But that doesn't stop him from one last big prank that will hopefully impress studio execs. Cassie falls into one of his pranks and that's when he sets out to get her to sign the release form. Only she refuses since it'll hurt her rep and chances of being taken seriously and Logan chases her around to try and convince her otherwise.
Logan finds himself quickly falling under Cassie's spell and those two surely do have some hot and sexy times together (that's an understatement). But they also talk a lot and really enjoy time with one another outside of the bedroom. Logan still holds a lot back and that frustrates me more than anything. He's one stubborn guy and he lets it get the best of him towards the end there. But all comes out well in the end for the cute couple.
Things I loved: Logan's brogue and kilt (I learned some new words as well); all the historical places noted throughout Scotland and London - being that I'm half Scottish, I loved this history lesson and added things to my 'to visit' list for this bucket list trip; the friends - I loved Cassie's friends and the color they added; Bonnie & Theo - can't wait for their book next; the message about literacy and reading anything being added into the plot, especially the 'smart women read romance' note - as a smart woman myself who reads nothing but romance pretty much, that resonated with me.
Definitely a great read for me and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
An excellent romance story, filled with all the things I want to get my HEA. There's a group of girlfriends traveling across Europe on vacation showcasing some iconic tourist spots as well as out of the way locales all described with rich detail as to give my minds eye a vivid glimpse. There is a devilish Scotsman and a charming Englishman to entertain the ladies on the final leg of their journey. There are steamy smexy times and a real attraction that can't be denied. There's a misunderstanding, there's always a misunderstanding and maybe a bit a soul searching all around. There's a couple of characters to dislike, that's always fun. The story wraps up in spectacular fashion and Bob's your Uncle, I get my HEA.
The story was interesting and flowed so seamlessly I read the whole thing and forgot to eat. Logan and Cassie are a wonderful couple full of sass and witty banter. Cassie's girlfriends are fun and diverse that will hopefully translate to a full series where all the girls get their HEA. I'm already looking forward to Smitten by the Brit already to see what's happening with Bonnie and Theo, the best friends.
