Getting Hot with the Scot was a super cute, thought-provoking novel packed with humor, love, friendship, and a great message. Getting Hot with the Scot is Melonie Johnson's debut novel. It kept me smiling throughout. I enjoyed discovering a new author whose books are a perfect mix of fantasy and realism, humor and passion, sweet and sexy. I'd love to see an epilogue but maybe we'll see more of Logan and Cassie in the other books of this series.
I received an advanced copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.
3.5 stars, which I'm rounding up to 4.
This book felt long, and I waffled between really enjoying it and thinking it was dragging... but it definitely made me want to plan a trip to Scotland! I originally wasn't intending to continue this series, but I do quite love Bonnie and I'm intrigued by her and Theo's story, so we'll see.
Melanie Johnson builds a vivid, complete world, and I enjoyed the level of family and friends involved in pieces of this story. That said... they're also probably part of what made it seem slow at times, and it took me a good 20% of the story to finally start to get her friends straight. We cover the entire span of Cassie and Logan's relationship in this one novel, and in order to do so, the timeline is a little crazy. Some pieces are told in detail, some giant chunks are skipped, and sometimes friends are practically abandoned for months.
Overall--I enjoyed Cassie and Logan's chemistry and banter, and this was a cute, sometimes steamy, romcom.
Hot indeed! There's nothing like a hunky Scotsman with the goods to back up his swagger. And boy does Logan have the goods...sexy and funny. What a wonderful hero he is. And the sizzling chemistry between him and Cassie is insane. I was captivated from the couple's amusing and steamy first encounter to the end of their journey. What a pair of fantastic characters created by this talented author. I loved the wonderful cast of characters in the five long-time girlfriends and can't wait for their stories. The author gave each one of the girls such entertaining individual characteristics that are unique to each. The story moves at an easy pace with wonderful humor, a sweet and sexy romance and some drama. You can't get around drama with five American girls on a five country vacation. And then there's Logan's quest to advance his career that involves Cassie which she's wants no part of and has the possibility of exploding their budding relationship. The story has a very organic feel to it that puts you right into each situation as it unfolds and had you either laughing at the antics of swooning over the romance. For a debut Ms. Johnson has a stunner. Truly fabulous!
Cassie has one goal for her European vacation with her four best friends, to hook up with a hot stranger. So when she bumps into a hot Scot in a kilt, she decides why not?
I wanted to love this book because Cassie is such a fun girl. I love how she’s career driven, has a close group of friends she sees regularly, and reads romance novels. However, the issue for me was the pacing. It felt like everything between Logan and Cassie was light, fun, and steamy, then all of a sudden there needed to be some serious drama so guess what? Logan has commitment issues because he has never properly dealt with his emotions in the past, but he’s able to work through that super quick. 🙄
The fun part of this is that there is a lot of set up for next couple of books. (The first three books in the series are going to be released back to back to back.) We’ve already been introduced to Theo (he’s British 😍) and Bonnie who will star in the next book and there’s even a small hint at what’s to come for Sadie at the end. I can’t wait to read about their HEAs.
Thanks to St Martin’s Press and Netgalley for my copy in exchange for my honest review.
Cassie and her girlfriends are on a trip to Scotland. They are stressing because they have not seen a hot Scot in a kilt yet. I mean, it is one of their ultimate goals. Cassie accidentally strays off course on a castle tour and ends up being kissed by a real live Scotsman! Then she finds out it is all a prank. But, she just can’t keep her hands off this man!
Cassie and Logan have the HOTS for each other. But, Cassie has other ideas. She is career focused and Logan is not up to her caliber. He is a little too laid back. But, there is just something about him that draws Cassie to him. Logan is determined not to let her get away. He even takes a gig closer to her in the states. Things really heat up then!
Well, well, well, I have found a new romance author! I literally laughed out loud at some of the great one liners in this book and the attraction between Cassie and Logan is pure enchantment. With this crew in this tale, there is no telling what will happen in the next installment.

I received this novel from St. Martin’s press for a honest review.
This book has two things that I really love, new authors and a Scot. I'm always ready to try someone new and this one looked so cute that I couldn't wait to try it. So I picked it up started reading it and thought...no! I can't do this!
OMG! What was I going to do? I hate DNF books. Of course, this one would mean that I didn't finish 99.9% of the book.
Since it was that much that I hadn't read I decided to put it down and try again later. So I read a few books that I really enjoyed and knew it was time to try again. The funny thing is that once I got over the few sentences that I wasn't getting into the book started to work for me. For some reason, the first page or so just didn't work for me. After that...smooth sailing till the end.
By the end of the book I had found a new author and I loved the story.
Getting Hot with the Scot is the first in Johnson's new Sometimes in Love series. Just the title alone drew me to the book. How could I have passed it up? Once I got into it I found that I really loved the characters. Both Both Cassie and Logan worked for me. Yes, they both had reasons to want to be with each other. Logan was both turned on and needed her to sign and the dotted line and Cassie were of course, hot for the Scot! Ha!
What I loved about Logan was that even though he knew that he needed Cassie's okay to show the clip he made of them he often forgot about it when it was with her. She became more important to him than his dreams. I really loved that about him.
Poor Cassie, on the other hand, got a little tunnel visioned about what she wanted to happen with her life and forgot to just enjoy life. Thankfully she had Logan to show her how to enjoy. Not to worry, she repaid him but teaching him it's better to love than not.
Throughout the whole book and found myself laughing and just enjoying it. I wanted so badly for them to find their HEA. I'm so glad they did. I also loved both Logan's friend and family and Cassie's friends. Who I'm pretty sure most if not all with have their own stories coming up.
Sexy, fun, and steamy to boot, GETTING HOT WITH THE SCOT by Melonie Johnson is a feisty romance that is sure to please.
Cassie Crow is thoroughly enjoying her holiday abroad with her best friends and picking up a collection of charms for her bracelet is the perfect way to remember her trip when she returns home. But Cassie didn't plan to pick up a sexy highlander while touring the stunning beauty of Edinburgh castle. But Logan Reid is known for being a prankster so can Cassie really trust him? Determined to take a more serious role in her career as a reporter on a tv talk show, Cassie knows she should focus on her career but there is something about Logan that tempts her far too much, and Logan soon realises that he wants more from Cassie than he has ever wanted before ...
Emotional, witty, and enjoyable from beginning to end, GETTING HOT WITH THE SCOT by Melonie Johnson was everything I wanted it to be and more. The characters are likeable and I enjoyed getting to know them, and the settings are brought to life in a fun way which really worked for me. There is drama, friendship, and love nestled among these pages and I highly recommend this book to all romance fans.
3.5 stars
Getting Hot with the Scot is a sweet and enjoyable read, I enjoyed the storyline and the characters were both likable and very relatable.
Overall a lovely start to the Sometimes in Love Series.

4.5 Sexy Stars: Cassie and her four friends have finally taken their trip to Europe, that they planned back in their freshman year of college. They are on their last leg of the journey presently in Scotland, moving on to London, England. Cassie has wanted to have one fling with a man on this trip, but as their travels wind down, her box of condoms is still full. While visiting Edinburgh Castle, she wanders into an off-limits room, and comes face-to-face with the man of her dreams, a Highlander with red, unruly hair wearing a kilt. Little does she know that when she throws her inhibitions out the window, that her life will change forever. Will this just a vacation fling or something much more, that she had not planned for?I wish I had four friends like Cassie does. They are so much fun. They work hard to try to get Cassie and Logan together, for more than just a fling. Cassie Crow is a hostess on a morning show in Chicago, but she has big plans. She wants to be involved in more serious reporting and has her life somewhat planned out, she does not have room or time to become a laughing-stock caused by Logan's web-show "Shenanigans". Logan Reid and his sister are internet sensations with their show "Shenanigans". Logan plays practical jokes on all sorts of people, but will the joke that Cassie stumbled into be worth the harm to her and a possible relationship? I loved Logan's character. He was a hurt little boy, hiding in a man's body. I enjoyed seeing him grow and change throughout the story. This was a sweet story. Logan was indeed a sexy Scot and Cassie a shy, driven woman who sizzled when they were together. I enjoyed watching things develop between them, and was rooting for a happy ending. There were a few slow parts in the story, particularly once they were back in Chicago, but otherwise, the story was well-paced and I read through it pretty quickly. I am looking forward to the next story with Bonnie (Cassie's best friend) and Theo (Logan's best friend). I had a feeling reading this one that something will develop between them once Bonnie dumps Gabe, her fiance that seems to be quite happy with the status quo. All in all, this was a fun, sexy book and I recommend it to romance lovers who enjoy a happily ever after with a lot of sizzle. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon my request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.
Cassie and Logan are on fire. There are a host of supporting characters and plenty of drama. Both Cassie and Logan have moments of doubt but get their happily ever after.
This was a fun and flirty romance about an American and her Scot. There was a good amount of steam and tension, and I found myself intrigued as to how things would pan out for the characters. I’m excited to read the next story in the series!
Getting Hot with the Scot was a disappointment. I loved the idea of the friends’ grand European adventure and didn’t balk at the unlikely premise where American girl meets hot Scot in a kilt in an old Scottish castle, The friends were all great, both his and hers, adding depth to the story and setting up future romantic plot lines. But... the relationship between Cassie and Logan just didn’t deliver the goods. While failure to communicate is a common plotting device, in this case it made the characters hard to like. Don’t they know how a good relationship should work? I read about 3/4 of the book before I gave up due to the unnecessary silly drama on which the story depended.
A thoroughly delightful debut romantic comedy!
This book rocks! A hot modern Scottish guy, a totally likable American woman, and 5 funny female friends make this romantic comedy a Must Read. The author writes with energy and humor throughout while still connecting with the vulnerabilities of the wonderful pair of main characters. The kissing and love scenes are smoking hot. I also love the third person perspective that alternates between Cassie and Logan.
I love how Cassie was fantasizing about a sexy fling with a European man during her trip, and then her fantasy comes true! We as readers can indulge in this dessert-like novel. It satisfies my idea of a Highland guy in a kilt talking with a brogue. I am so glad that I read this, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes romantic comedies or contemporary romance. I am looking forward to the rest of the series because I loved all of Cassie's friends.
I received a free advanced reading copy from the publisher via Netgalley, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
Cassie and her friends are on an epic European trip, and she has goals to break out of her comfort zone and find a hot guy to have a fling with. Enter Logan. They meet while Logan is filming a prank and Cassie gets caught up in it. Cassie isn't a fan of being filmed so Logan is chasing her down to sign the release. Cassie and Logan were cute together and I loved their whirlwind romance. It was cute and fun and I couldn't put it down. There was plenty of banter and fun throughout the book.
The only thing I didn't really care for was the way Logan's brogue was written. I found it difficult to read and it took me too long to figure out what he was saying sometimes. Other than that the book was quite enjoyable.
What a wonderful and unexpected twist on time travel or non-time travel. If you're a fan of the Highland romances you'll love this one. Fresh and contemporary, Melonie Johnson has made me fall in love with the Scots all over again.
What I really liked next to all the Scot's sayings coming from the sexy Scotsman, is the fact that the developing relationship felt so real. The two characters were not perfect, made mistakes and missteps along the way just like every day people.
She decides it time to have a foreign fling. This career woman is gonna go against character and goes on vacation to Europe. And she is determined to have a one night fling. When she meets her hot Scot, she finds him adorable but he only wants her signature on a paper so he can put her on his show after playing a prank on her, But he Scot is intrigued by her. So as thing progress they start seeing each other more often but things go a little haywire and both have to find a way back to each other. I really enjoyed this story and want to read more.
Laugh out loud funny, “Getting Hot with the Scot” plays on the current zeitgeist of pop culture’s infatuation with Highlanders. Thanks to a popular book and TV series, it seems that more than “some” likes it Scot.
The story begins with five friends on the last leg of their month-long European vacation. Currently in Scotland, Cassie Crow gets caught in a prank by Logan Reid, the host of a popular sketch show. Mad to be “had” (after all, she is Chicago’s pop culture princess), she was ready to write of Logan.
But it was easier than done. That fateful kiss they shared in the prank had Cassie tingling all the way to her toes. As for Logan, nobody has affected him the way Cassie had for a very long time.
A rom-com, the book brings readers from Scotland to London and finally in Chicago where destiny made sure that Cassie and Logan meet again. They were well on their way for their happily ever after but Logan’s past was rearing its ugly head and the prank that got them originally got them together was now pulling them apart.
A light read, “Getting Hot with the Scot” showcases Melonie Johnson’s lovable sense of humor. The main characters and those in the supporting roles interchangeably played comedian and straight man to each other. It’s non-stop laughter except of course for the dramatic parts.
“Getting Hot with the Scot” is Rated T for Teens. Parental guidance is advised due to some adult situations.
Getting Hot with the Scot is the perfect romance book- beautiful locations, a fun meeting, steamy scenes and a fun ending. This is my first book by Melonie Johnson and I am so happy I was able to read it. I hope that she writes books for every one of the friends, especially Bonnie.
What an absolutely charming book! Melonie Johnson is a new-to-me author, but I'll definitely be checking out more in this Sometimes In Love series.
Cassie and Logan are both dedicated to their careers and have no time for relationships, but their personalities were quite opposite. But opposites attract, and these two brought out the best in one another. He's the last thing she was looking for on a European vacation with her friends, and he had no idea that she was all that he'd ever wanted until she was right in front of him.
These characters are charmingly endearing, and their one-night stand (turned more!) was full of sass, sweet and swoony moments and frisky fun. The greater group of friends are just as charming, which is good when the rest of the series will be based around them!
