I am not a die hard fan of Beyonce. I like some of her music. I am not a beehive member. Saying that, I found this to be an engrossing read about her. Very well researched and written. I recommend even if you are not a die hard fan of hers. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review. Receiving the book in this manner had no bearing on my review.
Queen Bey by Veronica Chambers is one of my favorite pieces of work spotlighting the Queen...Beyonce. Can you tell I'm a huge fan? As a fan, I was worried that this book would not appropriately spotlight Beyonce. Boy was I wrong! Well-researched and well-written, this book is truly a celebration of Beyonce's life and career.
I received a review copy from the publisher, via NetGalley, for my honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
A wonderful book about a wonderful lady. This was an incredibly well researched, well written, and enjoyable read.
This book is for Beyonce lovers who want to read about how much other people love her. It's a good coffee table/bookshelf book for stans.
Let me say to start off, I am not a member of the Beyhive. I didn't take Beyonce seriously as an artist until she released Lemonade. Prior to that, I wrote her off as some sort of pop creation/confection. Possibly because I am so much older, she didn't speak to me as she does the 90s babies that are all stan all the time.
I picked this up in an attempt to understand why she generated such breathless devotion from the younguns. I certainly understand a lot better. Beychella WAS a complete triumph, she is at the zenith of her career with no signs of relenting. Her ability to record and release product at will on her own terms is enough to tag her a legend.
She will never be as important to me as Mary J. Blige or Janet Jackson...but that doesn't matter. Her impact on music culture; American Culture; the African diaspora; people of all ethnic, gender, and sexual identities in addition to the Black Communities of the US is permanent. She makes people feel seen, and heard, and vital, and beautiful...in a way they never felt before. THAT is why they stan.
Recommended for fans, and for folks who want to know what the big deal is.
This book is a collection of essays focusing on Beyonce's impact on not just music but society, marriage, black culture, etc. While the essays were all meaningful and well-written, I didn't feel like I gleaned any new insight into Beyonce. I also thought that the book shied away from any criticism, which was unfortunate.
Many thanks to NetGalley for the advanced reading copy.
This biography was well researched and contained a lot of information that I hadn’t previously read in other books. The author’s attention to detail is evident in the writing. Highly recommend!
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is a megastar, a name that is common in every household and a woman that is not afraid to say what is on her mind in the most thoughtful and creative way. Veronica Chambers along with many other contributors created a profound book circled around their love for Beyoncé; how she has impacted their lives and their love for her. Each essay dives in deeper than just the love they have for Beyoncé, but how she has shaped the world by speaking out on politics, police brutality, and have been at the forefront of highlighting culture through her fashion, her performances and videos, she makes sure that she is representing her Creole and Houston background. She is a representation of feminism, diversity, culture, and fashion.
This is a loving and personal collection from people in the industry that admire Beyonce for what she has done all around. If you're a fan of Beyonce, this is definitely a book you would like to own!

While I'm not a huge Beyonce fan, I did like reading about why other other people admire her so much. I think Beyonce is a beautiful and talented woman and I'm happy that she has inspired so many women. Being a woman of color, Beyonce inspires so many other women of color to be who they are and not be held down by society or a man. Beyonce shows women, through her music, that they have a voice! This book celebrates that through essays from a lot of different people and I think it's great.
I really enjoyed this collaboration, though the book misses the mark in terms of cohesiveness. The organization feels off and the writing styles vary too much.

I absolutely love Beyonce. I've grown up with her and followed her throughout the years. I still remember when I had to have a House of Dereon sweatshirt with fur hood. Unfortunately this book wasn't what I expected. I wanted this to be a biography about Beyonce but instead each chapter is an essay by a different author about how Beyonce influenced their life. I didn't know who a single author was so I didn't relate much. The stories had me thinking about how those moments affected me growing up, however, this just fell flat for me.
Special Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for allowing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
