Heracles, hero for the ages, is in the process of completing his famous labours. When I picked this up, I did not actually realise that this is the second book in a series, so beware of that, and don't do as I did, and maybe start with the first one. It was a decent novel, but there was nothing to distinguish it from other classic-set novels (but maybe I've just been spoiled by fantastic ones like Madeline Miller's Circe). For me, distinct characterisations were lacking, most stayed rather one-dimensional, with their motivations stated clearly on the page. There would have been a lot of potential to do more to make this stand out.

The second book in a retelling of the Heracles legend, "Wrath of the Gods" is a great read for anyone who enjoys Greek mythology. There are a few little touches and details that are added to embellish the story, making it a genuine retelling rather than simply rehashing what's already out there, and even if you're familiar with the legend, it's exciting and engaging, especially given the background story of divine politics.

Highly recommended for fans of the ancient Greeks.

I received an ARC on this from NetGalley. I am guessing I missed book 1 because I seemed to have started mid-story in Hercules' labours. Luckily enough was explained that I was able to keep up. This was a very good read and it kept me interested from start to finish. Luckily the minute I was done I was approved to read book 3..off to continue my journey....

I really enjoyed this book. The story line showed more than just the epic battles of Hercules. We see a man who is torn with his past. A man longing for redemption and peace, but only to see more sorrow from his efforts. Bravo, for showing that even the strongest of men still face brokenness and despair.
Highly recommend this book especially for young men.

The detailing of the book threw me off. I think it led into too much and became too slow paced for my liking.

Overall, the story was great. The characters, interesting. And the writing was impressive, I just wasn't a fan of how the book paced.

I thought this book was really well written and provided a good read.
The characters are well defined and the scenery very descriptive . I was hooked from the start.

Well worth a read.

I had originally rated this 4 stars. Then I read more about Heracles. And realized this isn't exactly true to myth, which kinda burns me. It was such a good story too. But I like accuracy!! It's just a pet peeve. Anyway this second book in the series follows Heracles thru the middle set of his trials following his maniacal spree of death. We meet more interesting characters, which bring these expeditions to life. Heracles lives up to his legend that's for sure. Wrath of the Gods was an excellent follow-up to Son of Zeus. Do not read Wrath without having read Son.

Sorry for not reviewing this book, I didn't realise it was #2 in a series. Really should mention that in the description.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Like, LOVED this book. The writing style, the characters, the plot, the way the author set the scene...all of it was an absolute treat. I loved having an inside look into Heracles' thought life and character, as well as seeing Hera in a new light. I review so many books, that sometimes I forget to read a book just for "fun," solely for me and my quiet time. This novel made me forget that I was doing a review at all, and immersed me instead into an entirely different world. An absolute recommend!

I read Wrath of the Gods straight after finishing Return to Ithaca, and it was wonderful to see Eperitus comfortable in his retirement at the beginning of this second book in Glyn Iliffe's new series based on the stories of Heracles/Hercules. It is not hard to imagine Eperitus as absorbed as I was in hearing the stories of Greece's flawed hero and his journey to redemption through the completion of 10 impossible labours.
The first book in the series had introduced us to Heracles and his crimes, and the start of his journey as a slave to his hated cousin, battling the Nemean lion and the Hydra and catching the Cyrenean Hind.
In the second book in the series, Heracles is faced with even more impossible tasks, which he must perform solo if they are to be counted - although he can at least have company along the way. The tasks become increasingly difficult, but Heracles faces up to each challenge. The solutions are ingenious and Heracles proves himself resourceful and up to the task. However, Glyn Iliffe's strengths as a writer shine through, not only in his adaptation of these legendary Greek tales, but in the way he takes these ancient stories and makes them his own.
The action is non-stop. Heracles and his squire face not only the challenge of the Ten Labours, but of those wanting to stop or hinder the hero for their own ends, The story reveals the best and worst traits of humanity.
The strength of this book is not only in the action, but in Heracles's personal journey of discovery. The proud, noble hero has to find an inner strength to face, not only the challenges that are set for him, but also the indignities that his cousin continues to heap upon him.
This Heracles is a flawed half-god whose humanity weighs heavily on him as a result of his crimes. This is what makes him a fabulous character, sympathetic and yet heroic, proud and yet humble. As a reader, you feel that you know him and what he is going through.
I loved this book from the very first words and found it impossible to put down.
What a fabulous retelling of these amazing Greek legends.

'Wrath of the Gods' by Glyn Iliffe, was a great retelling of the stories of Hercules and his impossible challenges. What I really enjoyed about this version is the subtle changes made to the historical feelings making it more relatable to today's readers. The liberties taken do an amazing job of grasping the need for drama and adventure both in the physical environment and tasks, but also in the intimate personal relationships between characters. This is not just another retelling of Hercules's story...this is an elevated and upgraded story of a man named Hercules.
