Great read. Read it aloud with my wife and kept us both captivated throughout. She is of Scottish ancestry, and we both traveled there several years ago. This book definitely brought back the mysterious feel of the ancient places there. Plus, of course, all the trappings of a great thriller filled the book as well. We immediately read another by Lexie Elliott after this one.
Oh my goodness!!! You will not be able to put this book down! So many unexpected surprises...just when you think you have it figured out, BAM! What a ride. I am still reeling from the experience.
After the death of her mother Ailsa inherits half of the house she lived in as a child before her father disappeared. In order to sort out her future she returns to the Manse in rural Scotland with her half sister Carrie. From the start everything seems off and ominous and Ailsa barely sleeps. Why does the Manse seem so scary? What happened to her father? Is he alive or dead? Why won't animals enter the Manse? A dark tale in which the house is an important character.
By the author of The French Girl. Alisa Calder inherited half a house in the Scottish Highlands that belonged to her mother, the other half belong to her father father who has been missing for years. Mystery, intrigue, great characters and writing, I loved this book.
I found this book too similar to many thrillers being published today. I know it will have an audience in our branch.
A fabulous modern gothic story. The atmosphere, characters, and unfolding story are all handled well. I loved Elliott's first book and this, her second, did not disappoint me in any way. I stayed up way too late last night to finish it.
An ancient mansion that talks to her, a half-sister she doesn't know, a father that might be dead or alive; all brought together by a master storyteller. Don't hesitate, this is a must read.
I received ARC
I read her 1st book and loved it- The French Girl
I could not stop reading that one, so I was excited to see and read her 2nd book.
A young woman doesn't completely own a house but owns a house
she meets with her mother's lawyer, but, she can't sell the house or the land
without her absentee father of 27 years.
So now she has a half sister, half a boyfriend, half a house.
How many pieces of the puzzle are required before the full picture emerges?
Mysterious and unexplained events happen, throwing her into turmoil.
What is happening?
Which way is right?
Why is this happening?
Who is responsible?
Must read to discover the answers...
Each chapter has MY FATHER... section. I enjoyed the progression of these.
This book seemed hurried, not as mind-blowing as The French Girl.
Lexie, you are better writer than this, take your time.
I still recommend, I still enjoyed the book- just not as well as her first book.
Creepy, twisted and so unique.

This book was a combination of so many different feelings. I was expecting a a suspense thriller, but this book is so much more.
The Missing Years is a creepy story that sneaks up on you.
Have you ever been in an old house that creaks and groans? Or you have the feeling something or someone is watching you and you constantly find yourself looking over your shoulder, waiting for something to pop out, and making your heart pound?
That is just what this book does to you.
Your home holds secrets. People wander in and out of it. Time is warped somehow. The town knows more about your house and the secrets it holds than you do. And where is your missing father who abandoned you so many years ago?
Set in Scotland, you get the flavor of the land and the bits of Scottish dialog that add so much to the narrative. Trying to make friends and fit in, Ailsa and her half-sister Carrie may have got more than they bargained for. Complex characters truly make this story - everyone from the animals to the children make an impression!
Little bits and pieces fall throughout the story, but yet the author holds back and never gives you the full story. Drips and drabs come together in an amazing conclusion that you do not expect in the least.
An awesome novel that is so different from any other, skin crawling creepy and spine tingly, make sure to carve out big blocks of time when reading this one. You will not want to stop reading!
An atmospheric thriller with a creepy old house and a touch of supernatural. Readers of gothic suspense will particularly enjoy.
I am a sucker for a book that revolves around a shadowy house filled with secrets and ghosts, so I was eager to dive into Elliott’s newest book. Alisa carter has inherited an old Scottish manor house, well half a house. The other half belongs to her father, a man who disappeared over a quarter of a century ago. Still, that doesn’t keep Alisa from moving in to the house, which right away begins to spook her. Strange sounds, the feeling of being watched and the fact that animals won’t even set foot onto the grounds all contribute to Alisa’s feelings that something is very wrong with the property. Elliott places the reader firmly inside this creepy old Scottish estate, using local dialect and characters that come to life in a way that both delights and unsettles.
