What a dark and unsettling read. One that had me on he edge of my seat, unable to stop , unable to continue reading, maintaining the momentum right till the end.

Without giving away too many spoilers, Eve is selling her home of many years and has had trouble selling it for years. When a young woman comes forward as a cash buyer, she feels a terrible foreboding.

Eve has a 34 year old daughter, a gorgeous young woman, trapped in her traumatic past. Their house sale brings up more than just memories from the past....

An absolute page turner. I read it through one evening after work. A creepy, unsettling book, but one I would definitely recommend for those who like this genre.

Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC of this book.

Thanks to Netgalley for my copy.

I am a fan of this author but personally this book didn't work for me unfortunately. I found myself disliking every single character from the overbearing mother to the childlike Isobel with her tantrums and outburst. This character in particular I found very confusing. The whole child locked in a woman's body and her mother's treatment of her just didn't ring true for me. Get the woman some treatment and don't feed her behaviour.

This book felt more of a horror/ghost story rather than a psychological thriller.

For most of this book I was just thinking “can something happen already” but despite that I did enjoy it once things got moving. It felt slightly creepy and mysterious (which I loved) but didn’t quite have that special spark which made me want to constantly keep reading. A good plot and well-rounded characters with engaging backstories helped but it certainly isn’t something I would consider re-reading at a later point.

Strong beginning and ending, but not sure what exactly happened in between to be honest. There were so many twists and turns that I just ended up confused.

With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the book in exchange for an honest review.
I have read books written by Lucy Dawson before and they are always creepy psychological thrillers, with a twist at the end.
The Memory is an engrossing story based on an incident when Isobel, Tim and Adam were young children and continues when they meet again as adults. Tim has a partner, Claire and they have a daughter, Rosie.
Once again Lucy Dawson has written an interesting, engrossing read. With plenty of twists and turns.
Highly recommended.

A horrific event affecting the children occurred some 30 years ago. The effects still lingered - in some more noticeable than in others.
The book is rather dark and creepy, but very hard to put down. The ending was a surprise, but that's what made the book so worth the time reading it.

Thanks so much Netgalley for the copy of this amazing book.

I absolutely loved this book. It's very creepy so if you like that sort of thing you'll love this.

It's about a young woman who had something traumatic happen to her, which has caused her to remain as a child in a woman's body. When a new family move into her family home as they sell up she doesn't cope well.

I really can't recommend this book enough, it's scary and so well written that I had to finish it in one sitting.

A completely gripping thriller. Creepy and tense. A tragedy hit a family many years ago and has had lasting effects. A new family move into a new home. All then kicks off. A bit of supernatural that may have put me off if I had known but I am glad I didn't judge by that as it all adds to the story and is not over the top at all. Great characters and a twisty tale.

I've read and enjoyed a number of Lucy Dawson's books and enjoyed them all. The Memory was no exception. It's fast paced, clever and engaging and I would recommend it and this author to any fans of smart psychological thrillers.

I was immediately intrigued from the opening chapters about this book and I found the last quarter flew past in a series of compulsive to read words.

It did to me lag in the middle a bit, as I really wasn't sure what was going on, and it was starting to feel a bit too supernatural for my tastes.

I wasn't really sure where the story was going at times, but really glad that I continued reading as it all made a lot of sense in the end.

I found that I didn't really connect with the characters that much, and although they had all been through horrible things, the only person I really liked was Adam.

It was a good book, it just wasn't my favourite by far from this author. I look forward to the next one with interest.

Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

The Memory by Lucy Dawson is a psychological thriller that is a real page turner, and not easy to review for risk of spoilers.

That fateful day…

“Someone shot at her daughter, and she didn’t protect her. A boy instinctively did it instead-the child threw himself in the line of fire rather than me. She had failed Isobel.”

What followed is that Eve moved her daughter Isobel (Izzie) away from the area. Isobel is only 7 years old and after the incident, was never the same. As the years pass, Isobel when she speaks has the voice of a little girl.
“Izzie might look grown-up, but inside she’s trapped. Caught in the day it happened… the day that broke her from within. Our family fell apart that day, and we never could pick up the pieces.”

The story centered around two different families; Eve and her daughter Isobel, and Claire, her partner Tim and daughter Rosie. Tim grew up with Isobel but moved away many years ago. The story covers different time periods, twenty years ago, ten years ago and the present.

The book starts off from Eve’s point of view. She takes her daughter Isobel to a martial arts class and something dramatic happens that leaves everyone there scarred for life. Isobel is never the same afterwards. Claire and her partner, Tim and their daughter, Rosie end up moving into Eve’s old home. The story is told through Eve and Claire in alternating chapters.

Then strange things start to happen in the house. Secrets that were once hidden now start to spill out…

Can’t say anymore for risk of spoilers. Nothing is what it seems. Everything is revealed in the end.

A real page turner…guaranteed to please. I was totally absorbed to see how everything would turn out. A satisfying read!

Many thanks to Bookouture via Netgalley for my digital copy.

This novel was very interesting and enjoyable. The plot was well crafted and moved forward naturally. The characters were realistic and sympathetic. I’ve not read any novel by Ms. Dawson. I was glued to the turning pages, anxiously waiting for the final truth to emerge. And when it did, I was in complete shock. Awe, even. I'm not sure I blinked, all I could do was stare

The book was a difficult going to begin with, but thanks to the encouragement of friends, I pulled it back up and got to it. To my amazement, the book bewitched me back into it – zip zap zoom. And I was flying with the pages, I didn’t ever want to stop reading it till the end. I read through the night till 4am. Whew!!

The story had Eve and daughter Isabelle selling their home Fox Cottage and Claire and family buying it. Both had Tim in common Claire’s partner and Isabelle’s ex… Then the house started breathing and spitting its warnings. Things started disappearing and appearing at new places…

I love Lucy Dawson books, they had the right amount of mystery to make it a rocking ride. This book too had mystery but with hints of horror with ouija board, planchette, spirits, seance, poppets, and holy water sprinkled in all the rooms by the priest. The book was just in the right side to creepy. Wow!! Absolute fun!!

Lucy was brilliant; the mystery started seeping through the pages at strategic points duly crafted by her to increase my interest. It ensnared me, bound me to it, one twine after another, some of them tighter than the others. Once the book picked up speed, I kept running into its various twists, which dragged me into the dark drafty corners just like the rooms of Fox Cottage.

This was one dark creepy read which kept me quite confused I kept hating and liking the characters alternately as I kept getting to know them. They were both interesting and unlikable.

Till the story came to a climatic horrifying finish which had me gasping. This fiery finale was the perfect culmination of the lies and truths, of realities and horror, of human and spirit.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this book, how sometimes the most gruesome of things are missed and wrongly labeled as childhood trauma. I was chilled to the bone for a long time!!

I have read a couple of Lucy’s books now and I have loved each and every one. I read the synopsis for ‘The Memory’ and I knew that this was one book I would be reading sooner rather than later. I eagerly began to read and boy oh boy ‘The Memory’ is certainly a read and a half. I really enjoyed it but more about that in a bit.
Oh my goodness there was certainly a wide range of different characters and personalities within the pages of this book and I can’t say that I took to any of them. Eve is a bit overpowering. She is fiercely protective of her daughter Isobel, which isn’t surprising when you consider what happened to her as a child, when her martial arts teacher started shooting at the children. Eve froze that day and she has been trying to make it up to her ever since. Isobel is still suffering as a result of that day and I did wonder if she had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Despite Isobel being a grown woman, she still talks with the voice of a child. Those are just two of the main characters. Both gave me the heebie jeebies for different reasons and that’s just for starters. I’m not going into the specifics because that would give far too much away.
I must admit that it did take me a little while to get ‘into’ this book but that has more to do with the fact that I was tired at the time. When I got into this book, boy did I become addicted to it or what? I just had to keep reading because I was desperate to know what was going to happen and to see if my suspicions about the various characters were valid or not. The deeper I got into the story, the more addicted to reading the book I became and the quicker those pages were turning. It didn’t seem to take me long at all to get to the end of the book.
‘The Memory’ certainly starts with a bang and the plot hits the ground running and maintains the pace throughout. The book started in such a way that will remain fresh in my mind for a long time to come. The author uses such vivid and detailed descriptions, that I actually imagined I was part of the story myself. For example: the scenes where he takes pot shots at the children made me feel scared and I found myself ducking to escape the pellets. If the characters felt something, then so did I and so on. I have a very vivid imagination and get far too involved with books that I enjoy.
Reading this book was much like being on an unpredictable and scary rollercoaster ride with more twists and turns than you would find on a ‘Snakes & Ladders’ board. There were also unexpected moments that crept up on me suddenly and had the same effect on me as would a punch to the gut.
In short, I did enjoy reading ‘The Memory’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I can’t wait to read Lucy’s next book. Here’s hoping that we don’t have too long to wait. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is 4* out of 5*.

Reading a story by this author can always be considered as a treat added to your pile of amazing books as well as a threat to the hours of sleep you get while devouring it.

Books can be confusing in a good or a bad way. This one messed with my head in a very good way. Half way through I still did not see how the start of the book would connect with the outcome, but hey, that’s just what makes the author having you come back for more each time she publishes a book.

While the author has guided your mind in a certain direction she surprises you with a twist you did not see coming and the pieces of the puzzle suddenly all fit together and you see the whole picture.

This book sketches a very creepy atmosphere and connects you to the dark side. And then there is light, an all consuming light to reveal everything that has been hidden for a very long time. 5 stars.

Thank you Lucy Dawson, Bookouture and Netgalley.
