I really couldn't get into this book and abandoned it half way through. I disliked the main character and found the plot slow
I have read romantic suspense and historical romance by Tanya Anne Crosby but Everyday Lies is the first woman’s fiction for me to read by her. I must say from the beginning she invoked my interest and my emotions with Gillian. She is such a flawed character, especially in her thoughts at first so I couldn’t decide if I liked her or not. Now liking the main character is important for me to truly embrace a story. However, I was so fascinated by Gillian that I kept reading. Then as the story move back and forward in time, telling her grandmother’s story as well as Gillian’s, well, what can I say I was hooked.
I would think that it would be difficult to mesh two different stories into one then bringing both together in the end but Ms. Crosby has done a marvelous job. I even began to truly like Gillian, hoping that she could find the road to recovery from being a functional alcoholic in her personal journey. I had always liked her grandmother but of course, she is seen first from Gillian’s POV. As the novel progresses Rebecca voice is also heard.
This well-written story has plenty of bad, stupid and greedy people in it that made me cringe at times for Gillian and her grandmother, Rebecca. Honest and unapologetic as it reveals secrets and discoveries, exploring family and relationships. Everyday Lies packs quite a punch.
Everyday Lies is a contemporary fiction novel from bestselling author, Tanya Anne Crosby. I’m a fan of Ms. Crosby and once again, she did not disappoint.
Gillian Frazer is called to her childhood home when the grandmother who raised her, Rebecca Frazer (Gigi) , is stricken with a debilitating stroke that confines her to a nursing home. Gillian has always viewed her Gigi as a strong, independent woman. During her stay in Rebecca’s home, Gillian realizes everyone, including her grandmother, has secrets. The stay also gives her time to reflect on herself and the state of her life. Ultimately, Gillian discovers her authentic self rather than the facade she presents to the world.
The story is revealed through the alternating point of view of present-day Gillian and flashbacks to Rebecca in 1960. Alternating viewpoints can easily go wrong, but the author handles them brilliantly, and the reader can easily follow the story. The characters are fully-developed and believable, though some are unlikeable. I loved that this is a story full of heart and genuine emotion, without unnecessary flash. Though this isn’t a thriller, there are unexpected twists that held my attention from start to finish.
Everyday Lies presents life in it’s simplest and most complex aspects. The novel was throughly enjoyable and I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to those looking for an easy but meaningful read.
My thanks to The Story Plant and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
Tanya Anne Crosby is a new author for me and I have to applaud her writing style and the way her characters come to life. I will most certainly be on the lookout for more books by Ms Crosby.
Gillian is a disenchanted woman who is recently divorced and has an addiction to both alcohol and stomach powders.
Brought up by her grandmother Gillians' world falls further apart when her grandmother suffers a debilitating stroke leaving her unable to cope independently and has to be placed in a nursing home.
Gillians' life is turned upside down and when she moves into her grandmothers house she discovers secrets from the past which will change her view on life and what love really means.
A good book for a rainy day.
This one was just okay for me I couldn’t connect with characters and the. Plot didn’t grab me .
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review this book
I found Everyday Lies disappointing. I wanted to like it,but that didn't happen. The main character is flawed but to a point where I just disliked her. Because of that, I lost interest in the story.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC for my Kindle.
Except for the profanity, this is my favorite book by Tanya Anne Crosby.
Rebecca had a hard life with an abusive husband She tried to raise their 2 sons to be better men than their father, but sadly they basically turned out the same way as their father. She has some resolve and happiness when she raises her granddaughter Gillian. Although Gillian doesn't always make the wisest choices, she loves and appreciates the life she's had with her grandmother. The story is a good one about relationships, family, friends, love, and life. In all, a good read.
This was my first book by this author. I really loved it. She creates such great characters, but they are not without their flaws. I did hope that Gigli would recover enough from her event to tell Gillian her side of 1960,but that didn't happen. I will be reading more by Tanya Anne Crosby! #netgalley #everydaylies
